The Twelve Apostles are among the most recognizable natural landmarks in Australia, drawing visitors from around the world to the rugged coastline of Victoria. These towering limestone stacks rise dramatically from the Southern Ocean, shaped over thousands of years by relentless wind and waves.

While they are often included as a quick stop along the Great Ocean Road, the experience can vary significantly depending on when and how you visit. With the right timing and a bit of planning, the Twelve Apostles can become one of the most memorable highlights of your trip to Australia.

This guide covers everything you need to know for 2026, including how to get there, when to visit for the best conditions, what to see nearby, and practical tips to help you avoid common mistakes.

Where Are the Twelve Apostles?

The Twelve Apostles are located within Port Campbell National Park, along the southwestern coast of the state of Victoria. They sit just off the famous Great Ocean Road, approximately 275 kilometers from Melbourne.

This stretch of coastline is known for its dramatic scenery, with steep cliffs, powerful surf, and unique rock formations carved by erosion. The Apostles themselves are limestone stacks that were once connected to the mainland before being gradually separated by the ocean.

How to Get to the Twelve Apostles Australia

By Car

Driving is the most flexible and rewarding way to reach the Twelve Apostles. The journey from Melbourne typically takes around 4.5 hours one way, depending on traffic and how often you stop.

There are two main route options:

The inland route (faster, less scenic)

The Great Ocean Road route (longer, but far more scenic)

Most travelers choose to drive along the Great Ocean Road, which offers coastal views, small seaside towns, and numerous viewpoints along the way. However, it is important to allow enough time, as the road is winding and slower than standard highways.

Starting early in the morning is strongly recommended, especially during peak travel seasons.

By Tour

Guided tours from Melbourne are a convenient alternative if you prefer not to drive. These tours typically include transportation, a guide, and stops at several key locations along the Great Ocean Road.

While tours remove the stress of navigation, they often follow tight schedules. This means less flexibility and limited time at each viewpoint, particularly during busy periods.

By Helicopter

For a different perspective, helicopter flights are available near the Twelve Apostles. These short flights provide panoramic views of the coastline and allow you to see the rock formations from above.

Although more expensive, this option is popular with photographers and travelers looking for a unique experience.

Best Time to Visit the Twelve Apostles

Timing has a major impact on your experience. The same location can feel completely different depending on the time of day and season.

Sunrise

Sunrise is widely considered the best time to visit. The light is soft, the colors are warmer, and there are significantly fewer people. If you are looking for a quieter and more atmospheric experience, this is the ideal time.

Sunset

Sunset is also very popular due to the dramatic lighting over the ocean. However, it tends to attract larger crowds, particularly in summer and on weekends. Arriving early is essential if you want a good viewing spot.

Midday

Midday visits are the least recommended. The lighting is harsher, and this is when tour buses and peak crowds arrive. The overall experience can feel rushed and crowded.

Best Season to Visit

Summer (December to February): Warm temperatures and long days, but also the busiest time of year

Autumn (March to May): Mild weather, fewer crowds, and generally stable conditions

Winter (June to August): Cooler temperatures, strong winds, and occasional rain, but fewer visitors

Spring (September to November): Variable weather, with a mix of sunny and rainy days

For most travelers, autumn offers the best balance between weather and crowd levels. If you’re planning a broader trip, check out my complete guide on the best time to visit Australia and New Zealand to understand seasonal differences across the country.

How Many Apostles Are There?

Despite the name, there were never twelve rock stacks. The formation was originally known as the “Sow and Piglets” before being renamed for tourism purposes.

At their peak, there were nine stacks. Due to natural erosion, several have collapsed over time. Today, only seven remain visible, and the number will continue to change as the coastline evolves.

What to See Nearby

Limiting your visit to the main viewing platform means missing much of what makes this coastline special. Several nearby locations offer equally impressive views and are worth including in your itinerary.

Loch Ard Gorge

One of the most scenic spots along the coast, Loch Ard Gorge is known for its calm waters, steep cliffs, and historical significance. It is named after a shipwreck that occurred here in the 19th century.

Gibson Steps

This location allows you to descend to the beach level, providing a completely different perspective of the cliffs and rock formations. Conditions can vary depending on tides and weather, so access is not always guaranteed.

London Arch

Previously known as London Bridge, this rock formation partially collapsed in 1990, leaving a natural arch separated from the mainland. It is easily accessible and offers excellent photo opportunities.

The Grotto

A smaller and less crowded viewpoint, the Grotto combines a cave, arch, and pool into one formation. It is often overlooked but can be one of the most visually interesting stops along the route.

How Much Time Do You Need?

The amount of time you spend depends on how you plan your visit.

A quick stop at the main viewpoint can take 30 to 45 minutes

Visiting nearby attractions typically requires 2 to 3 hours

Driving the full Great Ocean Road with multiple stops is best done over 1 to 2 days

Rushing through the area limits the experience, so allowing extra time is worthwhile.

Practical Travel Tips

Weather conditions along this coastline can change quickly. Even on warm days, strong winds are common, so bringing an extra layer is advisable.

Footwear is also important, especially if you plan to explore multiple viewpoints or walk down to the beach at Gibson Steps.

Parking is available near the main viewing area and is free of charge. However, spaces can fill up quickly during peak hours.

Drone use is restricted in many areas, so it is important to check local regulations before flying.

For those wanting a more relaxed experience, staying overnight in nearby towns such as Apollo Bay or Port Fairy can make a significant difference. This allows you to visit early in the morning or later in the evening when most day-trippers have left.

Is It Worth Visiting?

The Twelve Apostles are often described as one of the highlights of Australia’s southern coastline, and for good reason. The scale of the cliffs, the movement of the ocean, and the constantly changing landscape create a powerful and memorable setting.

However, the experience depends heavily on timing and expectations. Visiting during peak hours can feel crowded and less impressive, while arriving early or staying late offers a much more immersive experience.

Sample Great Ocean Road Itinerary (1 Day)

A one-day itinerary is possible, although it requires an early start and a full day of driving.

Morning:
Depart Melbourne early and head directly to the Great Ocean Road. Stop briefly at coastal viewpoints along the way.

Midday:
Continue through the coastal towns and stop for lunch in Apollo Bay.

Afternoon:
Visit Gibson Steps and explore the Twelve Apostles area.

Evening:
End the day at Loch Ard Gorge or return to the Twelve Apostles for sunset before driving back or staying overnight nearby.

FAQ

Is there an entrance fee?

No, visiting the Twelve Apostles is free.

Can you access the beach near the Apostles?

Direct access is not available at the main viewpoint, but nearby locations such as Gibson Steps provide beach access.

Is it suitable for families?

Yes, the site is accessible and suitable for families, although care should be taken near cliff edges.

Are facilities available?

There are basic facilities, including parking and restrooms, near the main viewing area.

Final Thoughts

The Twelve Apostles are more than just a scenic viewpoint. They represent a dynamic and constantly changing coastline shaped by natural forces over time. Taking the time to explore beyond the main platform, choosing the right time of day, and planning your route carefully can turn a brief توقف into a truly memorable experience.

Whether you are visiting as part of a longer road trip or making a dedicated journey along the Great Ocean Road, the Twelve Apostles remain one of the most rewarding destinations in Australia.

Planning the best time to visit Australia and New Zealand can feel overwhelming at first. Not only are the seasons reversed compared to Europe and North America, but each country also has very different climates depending on the region.

If you get the timing wrong, you could end up dealing with extreme heat, high prices, or crowded tourist hotspots. But if you plan it right, you’ll enjoy better weather, fewer crowds, and a much smoother travel experience.

In this guide, you’ll find a complete breakdown of the best time to visit Australia and New Zealand by month, including weather conditions, travel costs, and crowd levels—so you can plan your trip efficiently.

Quick Answer: Best Time to Visit Australia & New Zealand

If you’re wondering when to visit Australia and New Zealand, the best months for most travelers are:

September to November (spring)

March to May (autumn)

These months offer the best balance of comfortable weather, lower prices, and fewer tourists compared to peak summer. Official recommendations from Tourism New Zealand suggest spring as one of the best seasons for travel.

If your goal is to avoid crowds and save money, these shoulder seasons are the smartest choice.

Quick Plan for Your Trip

If you’re planning to visit both countries in one trip, timing becomes even more important. The best time to travel to Australia and New Zealand together is typically October, November, or March, when both countries have favorable weather conditions.

Most travelers need at least 2 to 3 weeks to explore key destinations without rushing. If you’re on a budget, the cheapest time to visit Australia and New Zealand is usually May or August, although weather conditions may be less ideal in some regions.

Best Time to Visit Australia & New Zealand by Month

January – Peak Summer Travel Season

January is one of the busiest months to visit both countries, as it falls during peak summer. If you’re searching for the best time to visit Australia for beaches, this month delivers hot temperatures and ideal coastal conditions. One of the most iconic coastal stops is the Twelve Apostles, located along the Great Ocean Road and best experienced at sunrise or sunset.

However, this is also when prices are at their highest. Flights, hotels, and tours are often fully booked, especially around major cities like Sydney and Auckland.

While the weather is excellent for outdoor activities, the combination of crowds and high costs makes it less ideal for travelers looking for a relaxed experience.

February – Warm Weather with Slightly Fewer Crowds

February offers similar conditions to January, but with slightly fewer tourists. This makes it a better option if you want summer weather without the peak holiday rush.

If you’re comparing the best time to visit Australia by month, February still ranks high for beach destinations and coastal travel, while New Zealand remains warm and comfortable for exploring.

March – One of the Best Months Overall

March is often considered one of the best months to travel to Australia and New Zealand. Temperatures become more moderate, making it easier to explore cities, national parks, and scenic routes.

At the same time, tourist numbers begin to drop, which leads to better prices and a more enjoyable experience. If you’re looking for the perfect balance of weather and value, March is one of the strongest choices.

April – Ideal for Nature and Road Trips

April marks the beginning of autumn, making it one of the best times to visit New Zealand by month, especially for scenic landscapes and road trips.

Temperatures are mild, crowds are smaller, and natural scenery becomes more vibrant. It’s a great time for travelers who want a quieter, more relaxed trip while still enjoying good weather.

May – Cheapest Time to Visit Australia

May is one of the cheapest times to visit Australia, as tourism slows down and prices drop significantly. Flights and accommodations become more affordable, making it attractive for budget travelers.

While the weather is cooler and less predictable, it’s still suitable for city exploration and cultural experiences. If saving money is your priority, this is one of the best months to consider.

June to August – Winter Season Differences

During winter, New Zealand becomes a popular destination for skiing and snowboarding, making it the best time to visit New Zealand for winter sports.

Australia, however, has more varied conditions. Northern regions remain warm, while southern cities experience cooler temperatures. This makes winter a unique time to visit if you want to explore different climates in one trip.

September – Start of the Best Travel Season

September is one of the best times to visit Australia and New Zealand, as spring begins and temperatures start to rise.

Crowds are still relatively low, and prices remain reasonable compared to peak season. This combination makes it one of the smartest months for travelers who want good weather without the downsides of summer.

October – Perfect for Exploring Both Countries

October is widely considered one of the best months to visit Australia and New Zealand together. Weather conditions are ideal for sightseeing, road trips, and outdoor activities.

If you’re planning a multi-destination itinerary, this month offers one of the best overall travel experiences.

November – Underrated but Excellent Choice

November continues the trend of great weather and moderate prices, making it one of the most underrated months to travel.

If you’re researching the best time to visit Australia by month, November consistently ranks high due to its balance of climate, affordability, and lower tourist numbers.

December – Start of Peak Travel Season

December marks the return of peak season, especially around Christmas and New Year. If you’re wondering when to avoid visiting Australia and New Zealand, late December is often the most expensive and crowded period.

Early December can still be a good option, but prices and crowds increase rapidly as the holidays approach.

Best Time to Visit Based on Your Travel Style

The best time to visit Australia and New Zealand ultimately depends on your travel goals.

If you’re focused on saving money, the cheapest time to visit Australia and New Zealand is during the shoulder or off-season months like May and August.

For the best overall experience, including weather and fewer crowds, spring and autumn remain the top choices. If your priority is beaches and summer activities, then December through February offers the warmest conditions—at a higher cost.

Final Thoughts: When to Visit Australia & New Zealand

Choosing the best time to visit Australia and New Zealand isn’t about finding one perfect month—it’s about matching the timing to your travel style.

For most travelers, the smartest choice is to avoid peak season and focus on months like March, September, October, and November. These periods offer the best combination of weather, price, and overall experience.

By planning your trip strategically, you’ll not only save money but also enjoy a smoother, more efficient journey—exactly what smart travel is all about.

The Middle East is a draw for travelers despite its political unrest and warring factions. That’s because this area of the world is steeped in history and culture. You only have to make a sojourn to any of the countries in this region to appreciate the ancient landscape. This part of the world is home to the historic countries or Arab states of:

Arranging Travel can Take Some Time if you are Journeying to Iran

That being said, you still wouldn’t think that Iran is necessarily a good travel destination. However, any hostility, you’ll find, is now due more to the politics rather than any overt hostility on the part of the citizenry. Typically, travelers are treated well. However, people from the U.S. cannot make travel arrangements unless they are accompanied by a guide and obtain a visa. These kinds of restrictions make trip planning a somewhat lengthy process, all which can entail waiting a couple months before you can finally travel.

Visiting Tehren

That being said, some intrepid tourists still don’t mind the wait in order to see one of the world’s most ancient countries. Iran, which was called Persia until the mid-30s, has a history that dates back to the 500s B.C. You will indeed experience a culture like no other when you visit such cities as Tehran or Isfahan (which was Persia’s capital in the sixteenth century). In Tehren, the Homa Hotel provides comfortable lodgings while the Khayyam Traditional Restaurant specializes in local fare. Enjoy the lamb stew or dizi – a concoction made up of lamb, potatoes, onions and garbanzo beans.
Other Attractions in the Country
Tourists, in winter, head to the Alborz Mountains to ski while history buffs travel throughout the year to see the architecture in Isfahan. The Ali Qapu Palace and the Inmam Mosque, both located in the former capital in Naghsh-Jahan Square, were built in the seventeenth century.
Find Resort Accommodations on the Island of Kish
In addition, Kish, an island on the Persian Gulf, offers resort accommodations at the Dariush Grand Hotel, where white sands and water sports attract visitors from all over the world.
Not a Credit Card-friendly Country
Regardless of where you may choose to go or stay though, bring along cash. You won’t be able to use your credit cards except at the largest hotels. Also, ATMs do not link to American banks.

Traveling by Bus in South Africa: A Good Transportation Option for the Budget-conscious Traveler

Rather than renting a vehicle or traveling by plane, you may want to consider a more affordable way of transport if you plan to visit South Africa anytime soon. Bus service is a viable alternative as the country is represented by four major lines (SA Roadlink, Translux, Intercape, and Greyhound).

Enjoy the Ever-changing View

Travel is safe and comfortable in any of the air-conditioned coaches of the aforementioned lines. Passengers can sit back in a reclining seat, watch TV, or view the ever-changing scenery. Less comfortable coaches that provide less expensive travel are also available on the Translux, SA Roadlink and Intercape bus lines.

Greyhound offers Travel Outside of South Africa Too

Plus, if you want to venture outside of South Africa, you can do so by booking passage on Greyhound, which regularly travels to such African destiantions as Mozambique, Namibia, Botswana, and Zambia.

Traveling within South Africa via the Baz Bus

If you are really frugal or are backpacking through South Africa, then you may think about traveling via the Baz Bus, which is a transportation service that provides services to such South African cities as Durban, Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth, and Cape Town. Baz buses provide hop-on-hop-off service with a fleet of about 20 buses, all which are designed with television entertainment and space for bags and luggage.

The Mini Bus Taxi – Still yet Another Inexpensive Mode of Transport

Even though it’s a very cheap way to travel, the mini bus, another option, is also not entirely safe. So, if you elect to choose this mode of travel, don’t catch the taxi at night and be careful about displaying any expensive items when you are traveling. Also, when you board the bus, make sure that you have your fee ready for the driver. Some passengers have been robbed while they were rummaging through their purse or pocket for the fare.

Mojito is a refreshing cocktail made with white rum.

Originally from Cuba, you can order a Mojito everywhere in the world however it is hard to find a good one!

It’s made of five ingredients: white rum of course, lime, sugar cane juice, sparkling water or tonic and fresh mint leaves.

The original Cuban recipe uses spearmint a lighter mint variety very popular in Cuba.

Its combination of sweetness, refreshing citrus and mint flavours are intended to complement the potent kick of the rum, and have made this clear highball a popular summer drink.

When preparing a Mojito, lime juice is added to sugar can juice and mint leaves. The mixture is then gently mashed. The mint leaves should only be bruised to release the essential oils and should not be shredded. Then rum is added and the mixture is briefly stirred to dissolve the sugar and to lift the mint sprigs up from the bottom for better presentation. Finally, the drink is topped with ice cubes and sparkling water. Mint leaves and lime wedges are used to garnish the glass.

The Mojito is one of the most famous rum-based highballs. Enjoy it with moderation!
