In a televised address to the nation, Modi said implementation of the lockdown will be strictly ensured in coming days to ensure that the virus does not spread to new areas,

The prime minister said detailed guidelines on implementation of the new lockdown will be announced on Wednesday.

Some relaxations may be allowed after April 20 in places where there is no hotspot, he said.

He said India has managed to contain the spread of infection well due to its holistic approach in dealing with the crisis and sacrifices made by people of the country in the fight produced positive results.

Modi said India received huge benefits from the 21-day lockdown in checking the pandemic and added that the country has dealt with the situation better with limited resources.

The lockdown that came into effect on March 25 was to expire on midnight of April 14.

The drastic measure shone the spotlight on the miseries of lakhs of migrant workers whose journeys on foot from several urban centres to their villages hundreds of kilometres away grabbed headlines for many days last month.

The catastrophic effect of the lockdown on the overall economy and livelihoods of lakhs of migrant workers triggered severe concerns following which a number of chief ministers in their video conference with Modi on Saturday sought some kind of relaxation for a number of sectors.

Late last month, the government announced a Rs 1.7 lakh crore package aimed at providing relief to those hit hard by the lockdown as well as an insurance cover for healthcare professionals handling virus infected people.(CNS)

*GENEVA*: World Health Organisation (WHO) on Monday (local time) warned that the COVID-19, which originated in China's Wuhan last year, is 10 times deadlier than the swine flu.

"Evidence from several countries is giving us a clearer picture about this virus, how it behaves, how to stop it and how to treat it. We know that COVID-19 spreads fast, and we know that it is deadly - 10 times deadlier than the 2009 flu pandemic," said WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

He also urged that control measures must be lifted "slowly and with control".

"It cannot happen all at once. Control measures can only be lifted if the right public health measures are in place, including the significant capacity for contact tracing," he said.

The WHO DG stressed that countries must strike a balance between measures that address the mortality caused by COVID-19, and by other diseases due to overwhelmed health systems, as well as the social-economic impacts.

"As the pandemic has spread, its public health and socioeconomic impacts have been profound, and have disproportionately affected the vulnerable. Many populations have already experienced a lack of access to routine, essential health services," the chief of UN Health Body said.

Srinagar April 13 : Jammu and Kashmir police registered an FIR against houseboat owner in Dal Lake of Srinagar for hiding whereabouts of a British citizen he was hosting since March 15, The Economic Times reported.

The foreign tourist has reached to Valley via Srinagar-Jammu Highway and had managed to skip the Foreigner Registration Offices of both J&K tourism and J&K police in Srinagar. Last week when the foreigner was found he was immediately taken to the hospital for a checkup where his condition was stated to be stable and was directed to remain in quarantine, said the report.

According to the report, J&K police accidentally found the foreigner on the houseboat in Dal Lake, last week, when one of their officials was on a different assignment inside the Lake. The FIR 45/2020 has been registered at Nehru Park police station under sections 269 and 188 of IPC.

J&K administration on March 17, 2020, had issued an order banning entry of all foreigners into Kashmir. Foreign tourists already present in Kashmir were directed to leave immediately and the tourism operators were asked to report about the presence of any foreigners as well. A week later, on March 24, Government of India imposed a 21 days lockdown to break the chain, ensure social isolation to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, said the report.

“We weren’t aware of this British person as he had come here by road and didn’t register anywhere. Now, we found him, the action was taken accordingly,” the newspaper quoted the Director Tourism Kashmir, Nisar Wani as saying.

He said that a US national had reached Pahalgam in southern Kashmir around March 18 and she was immediately traced and sent back, even though it took a while to convince her about the prevailing situation.

The tourism sector in Kashmir is facing the worst crisis in past few decades and was put to grinding halt, since August 5, 2019, when the central government revoked the special status of J&K and downgraded the state into two Union Territories of J&K and Ladakh. This was done through J&K Reorganization Act passed by the parliament on August 5 and 6. Over ten days before the decision, in the last week of July government had asked all the tourists both domestic and International, pilgrims of then ongoing Amarnath Yatra and non-local labourers to leave. However, since February 2020, few of the tourists had started trickling in and around 8182 tourists including 1699 foreigners arrived in Valley in February 2020 while as 4208 tourists including 827 foreigners arrived in Kashmir till March 15, 2020.

“Officials have traced over 22 foreigners from different countries stuck in Kashmir after the government imposed lockdown in wake of the coronavirus pandemic. This also includes members of a football team,” the newspaper quoted the sources privy to the issue as saying.

“Government is aware these foreigners and they have been kept under isolation and protocol has been followed,” The Economic Times quoted a senior official in J&K administration as saying.

An official said that all of them have been kept under surveillance and quarantine at their respective hotels and houseboats. Most of them have tested negative for COVID-19, while as a result of few is awaited. However, Wani didn’t confirm this number and officials in the administration didn’t respond to calls and messages.

“We have some foreigners here who have arrived in December and January and are working here,” said Wani.

J&K tourism department had hired a US national as snow safety officer, who arrived in Kashmir on December 28 and is currently staying in Gulmarg. At least three foreigners, working on a project in Kunzer are also present in Kashmir. They have been put into isolation at a hotel there. Another Brazilian woman is staying in private accommodation in Munawarabad Srinagar and she has also been put under quarantine.

“If you are aware of some other foreigners who we are unaware about please inform us as it will help us,” newspaper The Economic Times quoted Nisar Wani as saying.

Dubai: The Saudi Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance announced that Taraweeh prayers during Ramadan will only be performed at home as the suspension of prayers at mosques would not be lifted until the end of coronavirus.

Al Riyadh newspaper quoted Dr. Abdul Latif Al Sheikh, Saudi Minister of Islamic Affairs, as saying: “The suspension of performing the five daily prayers at mosques is more important than the suspension of Taraweeh prayers. We ask Allah the Almighty to accept Taraweeh prayers whether held at mosques, or homes, which we think is better for people’s health. We ask Allah the Almighty to accept prayers from all of us and protect humanity from this epidemic that hit the entire world,” Al Sheikh clarified.

In line with the instructions and precautions issued by the Ministry of Health and relevant authorities, five to six people from the deceased’s family are to perform funeral prayers for the dead, Al Sheikh said. “This is a precaution in line with the prohibition of gatherings, so that funeral prayers take place at cemeteries should not exceed five to six of the deceased’s relatives, and the rest pray at their homes, he emphasised.

Al Sheikh confirmed that funeral prayers are not greater than obligatory prayers, so it is possible to pray individually, as more important is that there should not be a large number of people gathering in the same place, where it would be possible to transmit the infection.

Srinagar, April 12 : Director SKIMS A G Ahanger today said the situation is grim and next two weeks would provide a clear picture whether COVID 19 has entered the community transmission phase in J&K.

“Situation is very scary. Next two weeks will decide whether it has entered COVID-19 has entered into community transmission phase in J&K or not,” he said.

Director SKIMS added that lockdown has helped to contain the coronavirus from spreading fast.

Regarding the functioning of a testing laboratory in SKIMS, Dr Ahanger said they are upgrading their resources to scale up the testing facility to 1000 a day.

“No one in the world knew about this disease. It caught everyone off guard. SKIMS was the first institute to start Covid19 tests, then GMC and other institutions followed,” Director SKIMS said, “We are getting more machines and increasing testing capacity. We now conduct 150 tests in a day. Some days before we conducted 176 tests in a day. We are increasing our capacity to 200 tests this week and by next week we are increasing it to 300 tests a week. By the end of this month, we are increasing it to 1000 tests a day in coming days.”

When asked how SKIMS is managing the duty schedule of its front line medical staff, he said, “We have come up with 10-day duty roaster for doctors which is followed by 20 days of administrative quarantine for them. They don’t visit their families or friends during the quarantine period. Then another batch of doctors replaces them. This is how we cycle goes on.

Srinagar, April 12: : Lieutenant Governor G C Murmu’s advisor Baseer Ahmed Khan today declared all the areas falling under the jurisdiction of eight police stations in downtown Srinagar as “Red Zones” and directed the officials and the police to ensure complete restrictions are imposed in these areas to prevent spread of Covid-19 pandemic.

, Khan, who is overseeing Covid-19 management in J&K, said all the areas that fall under jurisdiction of eight police stations that include Rainawari, Khanyar, Safa Kadal, Maharaj Gunj and Nowhatta, Kaka Sarai, Eidgah, will be “Red Zones.”

SRINAGAR, APRIL 11: Advisor to Lieutenant Governor and overall Incharge of Coronavirus Control Efforts (CCE) in Kashmir division, Baseer Ahmad Khan today directed Deputy Commissioners to enforce 24x7 (round the clock) strict lock-down in their respective districts.

Advisor Khan issued these directions while chairing a high level meeting to review the arrangements and preparedness to combat Coronavirus epidemic in the valley.

Advisor directed DCs to plug all loopholes immediately and take strict action against people who try to break the lockdown. He asked DCs to involve religious heads so that they can advise their followers against holding any congregations and spread awareness about observing social distancing norms to prevent the transmission of COVID-19.

Advisor said that two lakh N-95 masks and adequate number of ventilators will reach the valley soon. “Our frontline workers which include Doctors, medical staff and other essential services employees are doing commendable job on ground. There is a complete synergy between government and Medical workers. We have to work in unison and support each other in present circumstances”, he added.

Advisor reviewed random & rapid testing facilities in hospitals, Red Zones & Buffer Zones, door to door screening, cases in hospital isolation, suspected persons in Administrative & Home Quarantines, additional quarantine facilities, distribution of personal kits & masks, VTM kits, functioning of 24x7 control rooms, contact tracing, surveillance teams, online training programmes for medical technicians, power & water supply, FIRs lodged, sealing of shops, seizure of vehicles, establishment of De-Contamination tunnels at all hospitals, distribution of ration at door steps and other measures.

New Delhi, April 11, CNS: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday held a meeting through video conferencing, with various chief ministers of different states and Union Territories to discuss the situation arising out coronavirus pandemic and hinted at extending the 21 day countrywide lockdown, beyond 14th of April.

According to CNS, Prime Minister interacted with the chief ministers of different states via video conference. During the video conference, PM Modi hinted that the 21-day lockdown phase that ends on April 14 might be extended.

Prime Minister Modi also assured all the chief ministers of his 24x7 availability in this hour of crisis. Chief Ministers of different states including Yogi Adityanath (UP), Arvind Kejriwal (Delhi), Uddhav Thackeray (Maharashtra), Mamata Banerjee (West Bengal) and Nitish Kumar (Bihar), are among the few state heads, who attended the video conference with PM Modi.

Meanwhile Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, during the video interaction with o PM suggested extending the lockdown till 30th April.

Srinagar, April 11:

For the first time in its decade-long history, none will witness the splendour of tulips at the Asia’s largest tulip garden on the foothills of Zabarwan in Srinagar in view of the covid19 outbreak.

Unlike previous years, the bloom of a million tulips of nearly 50 varieties in Srinagar is going to wilt without being witnessed by anyone in view of the pandemic which has forced majority of world population to remain indoors. The tulip bloom lasts only for a month until the temperatures witness a surge in Kashmir.

“This year we had increased the tulip bulbs. We had planted nearly 13 lakh tulip bulbs. Last year, we had some 12.5 lakh. We had also planted some hyacinths, daffodils, roses, ranunculi, muscaria, iris and other spring blooming flowers,” said a source in Floriculture Department, which manages and looks after the garden.

However, due to the coronavirus pandemic this time there is no visitor to witness the “magnificence of million tulip bloom”.

The terraced garden in Srinagar, named as Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden was opened for the first time in 2007. It has emerged as Asia’s largest tulip garden.

The garden spread over 30 acres was ranked fourth biggest tulip garden among the world’s biggest tulip gardens by the World Tulip Society in 2017. It was also touted among the top 5 tulip destinations in the world at the Tulip Summit in Canada in 2017.

The garden would be opened for public every spring for nearly a month, until the time tulips naturally wilt due to increase in temperature. Official statistics show around two to three lakh visitors including locals, and national and international tourists would visit the garden during this period.

Besides, the workforce of Floriculture Department, mostly gardeners have to put in a lot of effort round the year to make the bloom possible in spring.

*Washington:* The US has become the world’s first country to have registered more than 2,000 COVID-19 deaths in a single day with 2,108 fatalities reported in the past 24 hours, while the number of infections in America has crossed 500,000, the highest in the world, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

China, where the deadly coronavirus disease started in December last year before spreading across Europe and America killing more than 100,000, has so far recorded 81,000 cases of positive infections and 3,339 deaths.In terms of fatalities, the US might soon overtake Italy where 18,848 COVID-19 deaths have happened so far. By Friday night, the US had 1,8679 recorded deaths, closely behind Italy. More than 16,000 people have died in Spain and over 13,000 in Germany, the university data said.

By Friday night more than 2,108 Americans had died due to the novel coronavirus and 500,399 people had tested positive with the dreaded disease, it said. The COVID-19 positive cases in the United States are now more than the other top countries taken together: Spain (158,000), Italy (147,000), Germany (122,000) and France (112,000). New York, which has emerged as the epicenter of COVID-19 deaths, has registered over 1.7 lakh positive cases, which is more than any other country.

More than 7,800 people in New York have died due to coronavirus. New Jersey has has nearly 2,000 deaths and more than 54,000 confirmed cases.Before the start of the week, members of the White House Task Force on Coronavirus had projected between 100,000 and 200,000 deaths in the US. While President Donald Trump had said that this was going to be a “terrible, terrible” week in terms of death, US Surgeon General Jerome Adams said the week was going to be 9/11 and Pearl Harbour moment for the country.

On Friday, Trump told reporters that as per the new projections the death toll was expected to be below 60,000. “

District Development Commissioner Srinagar Dr Shahid Iqbal Chowdary said that 8 Covid-19 patients in Srinagar sound panicky, but it is not. “This a classic tracing success story. We found a group of non-local visitors, acted fast and quarantined them. Out of 8 persons only one is from Srinagar who has come in contact with this non-local group.

Sources told that a group of 7 visitors from Kerala, part of Tableegi Jamat were present in Srinagar. A local youth from Chatabla area was in touch with them. As the administration came to know about it, they were quarantined and today their tests were found positive.

There are 207 confirmed cases in Jammu and Kashmir, out of which 168 are from Kashmir among which 7 are non-locals.

Srinagar April 10 (CNS): Jammu and Kashmir reported 25 new cases of the novel coronavirus pandemic in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of infections to 209, official sources told.

*They said that among the fresh cases include 18 in Kashmir Valley and seven in Jammu*.

*Among the 18 cases in Kashmir Valley, sources said 10 are said to from Kupwara and Baramulla districts of north Kashmir.*

Regarding Jammu cases, they said, six are contacts of a 61-year-old woman who died on April 8 and are all residents of Udhampur district, the home town of the deceased woman who was cremated at Jammu yesterday “in accordance with her wish.”

*Washington*: The coronavirus pandemic has claimed over 16,000 lives and infected over 460,000 people in the US, devastating the country’s economy and rendering a record 16 million workers jobless in just three weeks.

Of this, the New York metropolitan area, comprising the adjoining New Jersey and Connecticut, alone account for more than 9,000 and 220,000 cases respectively.Globally, over 1.5 million people have been infected so far by the coronavirus and the fatalities stands at nearly 95,000.
