The old adage “Health is Wealth” has always held true. There have always existed different dangers to the healthy well-being of human beings. However, in recent times, changing lifestyles and the diseases that they bring along have emerged as a major threat. One can see that obesity is on the rise, which is putting even youngsters at an increased risk of major ailments related to vital organs like the heart etc.

Due to our fast paced lives and the stress that it induces, it has become all the more important today to live a healthy life. Many people view body weight as a parameter of being healthy. However, it is important to note that being healthy doesn’t mean losing weight. To be healthy means to be disease free and be fit. Weight loss is just one of its components but an important requirement to be disease free.

Paucity of time has hooked us to fast food and in our fast moving lives, we don’t have the time to pause and think how this junk food is the biggest obstacle to living healthy. Healthy living is not any rocket science and can easily be incorporated in our lives through simple tips; the first of them being to avoid excessive junk. Junk consumed once in a while in small quantities is not harmful but to survive on it is excessively harmful. Food items like pizzas, burgers, soft drinks etc. may provide enough calories but do not satisfy our nutritional requirements.

This brings us to the next point. Our body just doesn’t need calories; it needs a balanced diet. A balanced diet as the name suggests never has excess of anything. It instead has a little bit of everything. Small ways by which one could consume balanced diet could be by having fruit snacks during the day and having salads prior to heavy meals. While our everyday diets are generally rich in proteins and carbohydrates, we tend to ignore the consumption of vitamins and minerals along with roughage. Having fruits and salads takes care of these requirements.

Yet another important factor in determining our health is our water consumption. One should consume as much water as possible in a day as it never has any demerits. From regulating body temperature to detoxifying our body, drinking water has more benefits than one can possibly count.

It is also very important to do some exercise. While some prefer to do yoga and meditation, others may choose to take a brisk walk or even do aerobics. It doesn’t matter as to what form of exercise is being done as long as the muscles are getting trained to be flexible. For those who can’t take out the time to hit the gym or go for a morning walk, they could do some simple stretching exercises for five-ten minutes even if one is at work.

Good Sleep is also a crucial factor in killing stress and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It is said that six to eight hours of sleep a day is a must.

Moving towards a healthy lifestyle does not mean starving oneself. It involves making small changes in one’s lifestyle, like, taking the stairs instead of the lift. It’s about trying to find healthier alternatives. Eg, if one is craving for potato chips, then baked chips would be better than fried ones. Similarly if one wants to have a cold drink, fruit juices or lemonade would be better than carbonated drinks. For those who consume tea or coffee excessively, green tea – a brilliant anti-oxidant- would be a good alternative. Or for those who are non-vegetarians, white meat would be healthier than red meat.

As can be seen, staying healthy includes a number of factors. And none of these are very hard practices. One just has to be motivated to bring about change.

It is true that old habits die hard and change is always resisted. But then, change is the only constant.

Health risks in young people are gradually turning into a matter of grave concern. In 2002, United Nations General Assembly Special Session on Children stressed the need to expand and implement national health policies and agendas for adolescents, which would be aimed at fostering better physical and mental health. The World Health Organization (WHO) in a report estimated that more than 2.6 million young people aged between10 to 24 die each year largely due to preventable causes. Young people today are faced with healthcare issues like mental health problems, most commonly depression or anxiety, use of tobacco which in turn increases their vulnerability to lung problems including cancer. The most threatening disease that is increasingly being detected in adolescents is HIV (Human Immuno Deficiency Syndrome), which in its advanced stage takes the form of Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). WHO studies have revealed that in the year 2009, 40 per cent of all HIV infection was detected in young people within the age group of 15 to 24.

The prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the young population

Worldwide there are around five million young people who are infected with this life threatening disease. The main reason for this sad state of affairs is the lack of awareness about the means of protection particularly the use of condoms to prevent sexual transmission of the virus and clean needles and syringes for those who inject drugs. WHO research has underlined the fact that only 36 per cent young men and 24 per cent young women have extensive and correct knowledge of how they can protect themselves from acquiring the virus. The limited knowledge in these regards is further propelled by the social, cultural and economic conditions. It has become an imperative to come up with strategies that will be effective for HIV prevention together with successful handling of these issues.

The Indian Scenario

A study titled ‘Youth and HIV/AIDS in India’ was done by Alison Drynan, which provides various important insights with regard to what are the factors that have contributed to increasing HIV cases in India, how far these causes have been addressed and what are the impediments in this respect.

The first issue that confronts policy makers today is how to define the term ‘youth’. India’s National Youth Policy provides a very broad based definition for youth. It brings under its ambit commercial sex workers (CSW), intravenous drug users (IDU), run away children, child labourers and students.

There is a disparity in knowledge and acceptance of HIV/AIDS and preventive measures between the urban and rural youth. This is further aggravated by the presence of misconceptions like those relating to the disease being curable and non-preventable.

The attitudes of young people as sexuality educators claim is a hindrance to creating awareness coupled with the absence of uniformly established sexual and reproductive health education in school system. Another problem is that at the international forum the deliberations and discussions on HIV/AIDS remains confined to African societies. Government advertisements often come in under criticism for providing inadequate information. For example: Ads like ‘Use a condom’ fail to give any information as to’ why’ or ‘how’.

According to the National Youth Policy the need for programming for adolescents has become almost obligatory because this age group is especially vulnerable due to their ‘high risk behaviour, greater biological susceptibility, limited access to information and counselling even more limited access to STD (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) treatment facilities and the fact that primary prevention, which is primary for effectively preventing the disease often becomes difficult’. Population control and family planning methods need to promote responsible sexual behaviour in adults.

Educational Institutions are not open to starting sex education as they feel that its thrust is mainly negative confined only to discussions of casual sex, unmarried pregnancies and dangers of acquiring HIV. Moreover, our society still has to go a long way in allowing open discussions of homosexuality and masturbation.

Efforts taken to combat this challenge

*FPAI-SECRT: Family Planning Association of India- Sexuality, Education, Counselling, Research and Training; has been instrumental in backing initiatives aimed at HIV/AIDS prevention.

*TORCH-HIV/AIDS telephone helpline, has been introduced where 75 per cent callers are adolescents, and the most commonplace questions are related to masturbation, unprotected sex, condom use and STD’s.

*Non-governmental organizations like NAZ have been pioneer in educating young people in these issues by conducting workshops in city’s colleges, run condom distribution campaigns, facilitate counselling, confidential testing, telephone helpline and educational theatre.

* Tata Institute of Social Sciences collaborated with the Bombay Municipal Corporation in training of adolescents and youth.

All the riches in the world would be of no use if one doesn’t possess the health to enjoy it. Hence, having a sound mental and physical physique is of utmost priority to any individual.

However, with the hectic, fast paced schedules of modern life the major complaint brought forth by many individuals is the scarcity of time to do physical exercise. This is a major issue as long hours of sitting at one place in front of the computer doing a lot of mental work can lead to a sedentary lifestyle and ultimately it is the human body- the health of the person concerned that faces the brunt of the lack of physical activity. One of the major impacts of a sedentary lifestyle is accumulation of belly fat and once accumulated it becomes really very difficult to loose weight from this part of the body.

Excess fat accumulation in any part of the body has got serious implications since chances of heart attack, diabetes, cardiac arrest are on a high for obese people. Besides this, it causes a lot of laziness and dizziness and therefore resulting in reduced levels of concentration.

On one hand the boom of the IT sector in India has led to high levels of income generation by recruiting around a lakh of young IT graduates from all over India and hence reducing unemployment levels and increasing GDP of the country as a whole by many levels but on the other hand it has also taken a toll on their health. Long hours of work with no time for physical exercise and partying hard on weekends accompanied by squandering away their hard earned salaries in malls eating in fast food restaurant chains like McDonalds etc. have given way to bad eating habits ultimately leading to poor physical and mental strength, which just doesn’t end there but has a long lasting effect on their future generations also since such poor habits are transferred from parents to their children who also end up following suit. Besides this, for young working women class who are not yet married, obesity leads to other serious complications also like pregnancy disorders etc.

So how to curb the negative effects of such a sedentary life style or in better words voicing the concern of major population, “How to tackle the challenge of allocating appropriate time for physical exercise?”

In my perspective, time here is not the constraint, the constraint here, is the body’s resistance to change. Since the body has adapted itself to the sedentary lifestyle, hence now it becomes increasingly difficult for it to change i.e. to shift to a new healthy lifestyle of doing exercise.

By convention, the human body prefers comforts and luxuries to hard work i.e. easy way to hard way. So doing strenuous exercises is not a natural state for the human body. So, a better idea is to replace exercises with sports like basketball or badminton or football in which there is adequate amount of physical activity plus the body also doesn’t feel it is doing any strenuous exercise. In a way you are enjoying the process.

Hence the need of the hour is that companies should allot a fixed amount of a day’s activity to sports like aerobics dance etc. in which besides having a social interaction, it also provides for people to enjoy that time only for their own self where they release the stress that they have accumulated the whole day and also stay physically fit. Thus, achieving dual benefits.

Emphasis should also be on developing healthy food habits. Only once a while fast food should be consumed, the rest of the time more of green vegetables, fresh fruits and proteins should form the part of diet.

Following the above mentioned tips on a regular basis would surely lead to desired results of a healthy mind and a healthy body. And who on Earth does not crave both of this !!

Introduction

I was standing with my friends at the tapri just outside our college and discussing the events of the day. A surprise test, a disastrous viva and being dismissed from the class for creating disturbance was too much to take for a day. It was a chilly evening and I wondered how the winter will cast its spell on us. A group of boys from our college walked out of the campus towards the same tapri. We smilingly wished each other but in a few minutes my smile turned into a frown when I saw them pull out cigarettes and smoke right in front of us. While we walked away, one of my friends walked up to them and gently reminded them that smoking at public places was banned. They said “Yes we know, thank you!” That is the present generation. There was a time when our generation was ready to give up their lives for the freedom of our country and today that same youth is not able to give up smoking to abide by the laws framed by their own government.

Mission: Save public places

Smoking at public places was banned in India since 2003, but looking at the response the government toughened its stand on 2nd October 2008 by specifically listing the public places which included work places, restaurants, hotels, bars and pubs, and on roads and crossings. But needless to say, no kind of restriction seems to work on people who don’t seem to understand the value of their own lives, forget about their loved ones. Reports suggest that passive smoking is equally harmful to health. So now it is not just the duty of the smoker to stop smoking at public places but also the non-smoker to make this a reality. As it is rightly said, “To tolerate a crime is as good as being a part of it”.

Mission: Guide the blindfolded youth

Smoking has become a style statement to youth today. As a result, many children start smoking at an age as early as 14 yrs. Smoking at such an early stage increases the probability of getting heart diseases, lung cancer and other respiratory problems. The Indian government has taken a lot of measures to provide food supply and primary education to all and to ensure development in all possible ways. We continuously talk about building the future of our country by grooming the children who will ultimately guide the growth of our country tomorrow. But who has seen that these children that we talk about and theyouth that we depend on, are themselves blind folded. We have to show them the correct path today, unless it becomes too late.

Mission: Long lived happiness

Smoking is an addiction for most of the smokers and this is preventing them from giving it up even if they want to. As per reports, seven out of ten smokers say they want to give up, but they don’t. Giving up this addiction requires a strong will power and constructive support from friends and families. Hiding the cigarette packets, keeping it at different locations, chewing gum are few of the simplest yet affective techniques to quit smoking. There must be a nagging thought running on the minds of the smoker that smoking might give him the instant relief but it is killing him part by part. Smoking is a painful death; a death of all future plans, a death of the dreams and hopes of loved ones, a death of your conscience and dignity and mostly importantly you and your life! We get only one life to live and our every effort should be to make it worthwhile to live, so why suffer so many deaths. Quit smoking!

Gone are the days when summer vacations were meant for outdoor fun and frolic, possibly a trip to an exotic location or a place of scenic beauty, when weekends were reserved for a stroll in nearby lawns ,when evenings were meant for a drive with a special someone!

In the electronic and computer age, the concept of online social networking has drawn everyone’s attention-be it a school-goer, a college student, a housewife, a working corporate etc… Just about anyone is having a strong liking towards it. But this liking transforms into an obsession, a mania and finally an addiction that is seldom realized. Yes, social networking is fast becoming a mass addiction, without the addicts realizing the potential ill-effects of it.

I’m not at all saying that online social-networking is useless. Infact I am a strong believer that it does more good than harm, and it very much a necessity but an overdose of anything is harmful, isn’t it? And in this case the ill-effects are like silent-killers. Propagating and diseasing the addict without even hi knowing it. And moreover the effects are long term. That seems reason enough to at least beware of the ill-effects of this online craze-in some cases an addiction.

The primary concern are the health risks, it poses. Sitting in front of the computer, chatting away with friends or updating one’s status the whole day not only causes physical and mental fatigue but it also strains the eyes. The growing ‘computer vision syndrome’ and other vision disorders are a testimony to this fact. And then the popular trend of networking at nights until the wee hours, leads to insomnia and sleep disorders, which ultimately hurts the body clock. And this isn’t all. The mental and psychological stresses are even harder to define and tackle. In many cases that are reported, the user develops extreme personality consciousness and psychological imbalances. In teenagers, especially the trend is responsible for infusing peer-competence pressure, attention-deficit disorders etc

So what is the way out? Do we stop using them at all? No, social networks are a vital medium of maintaining contacts with near and dear ones (and even help in career networking, professional and corporate networking etc) and hence we can’t stop using them abruptly. The most feasible solution is practicing self-restraint, though easier said than done. But by practicing certain guidelines as thumb rule, one can easily achieve a balance.

One should first define the very objectives of using a online social-network. Once that is done, the number of hours needs to allocated depending upon availability of time. Then the user must be able to prioritize among all his objectives and devote hours within the time limit according to priority order. The user must religiously follow this scheme and quit as soon as his/her allocated time expires. That way, even if one misses on some activities it’ll usually be the low priority activities-those for entertainment and fun. And there we are-reaping the benefits while simultaneously avoiding the threats.

Besides casual exercises and rest for eyes from time to time and avoiding computer use during odd hours can tremendously help (One must not skip an evening walk in the lure of this addictive habit). A bit of self- effort and we can free ourselves.

After all, man is born to rule all technologies, and not be a slave of any. Fitness first!!

High blood pressure can be a concern for anybody but those with diabetics will suffer from it as opposed to runners. If you are obese and diabetic, a high blood pressure might be deadly ultimately causing a fatal cardiac event. Like many health problems associated with diabetes, good control over your blood sugars, a healthy diet and exercise can help to keep your hypertension in check.

If you suffer from a headache, your eyesight is blurry and you are feeling light headed or dizzy you might have high blood pressure. These symptoms aren’t only indicative of high hypertension though and you should seek medical treatment to determine the cause. In other cases there may be no symptoms in any respect when you have high blood pressure levels or it could be slightly elevated. It makes sense to have your blood pressure levels routinely checked at your doctors appointments.

If you are obese, the most effective way to reduce your blood pressure level is to lose weight. Follow meals plan that works well for your diabetes, ensuring that you are consuming enough food, and will still enable you to lose weight. Other changes that one could make that will improve your blood pressure are:

*An exercise routine that is followed on a regular basis
*Reducing stress that you experienced – mediation, yoga, letting go of some responsibilities
*Quit smoking
*Lessen the volume of salt you have for cooking or on your food

If you are making lifestyle changes to lower your blood pressure level your doctor may decide to put your on medication. If you will need to take blood pressure level medication it does not have to be forever. You will be at it being a short-term fix whilst you make the changes required to lower your hypertension on your own.

We are living in the twenty first century. We have everything. We have motorized vehicles to go anywhere, anytime. We have so many restaurants to eat any kind of food, anytime. We have television to watch the whole world from our home, anytime. We have Facebook to socialize with anyone, anytime. We have cell phones to talk to anybody, anytime. We have iPods to listen to good music, anytime. In short, we have all means of pleasures. But still we are not happy. Our elders had not so many facilities but still they were happier than us. So what we are missing?

We are missing small moments of happiness in our lives. We are running here and there to collect all the means of happiness but not the happiness. We are waiting to be happy rather than being happy now. We are just holding it to have something to be happy then. We are becoming ignorant about this most important ingredient of a healthy and fit life. But it needs to be taken seriously otherwise it can develop into a major problem, which is already dominating the young generation’s lives.

It can create many health problems like depression, heart diseases and many more. There are many signs that show that you are not happy. Some of them are like: you start spending too much time on television. You may have difficulty in maintaining relationships with your family and friends. You are finding it too difficult to control the stress. You may have sleepless nights. In extreme cases you can become drug or alcohol addicted. And the list is endless. So what are the factors responsible for it?

There are many but the major cause of our unhappiness is our complex lifestyle, which we are unnecessarily forcing on our self. We have lost faith in basic and simple values of life. We are becoming more and more materialistic day by day. We are losing the power of self-control in our behaviour and emotions. We have made our life unnecessarily busy. We are chasing excessive easiness and comfort in our life. And there are many more. But we can easily overcome these problems by developing simple and healthy habits in our life.

First and foremost is starting doing things for which you are passionate and which make you happy. Start playing a sport at which you are good and can utilize your strengths. Start reading good books. Listen to some good music. Start having fun with friends. Start investing time in relationships which you value most. Share your dreams, thoughts and feeling with others.

Weed out negative thoughts from your life. Start doing meditation, yoga & prayer, enjoy morning walks and be with nature. In extreme cases you can go for some psychological treatments like psychotherapy, music therapy, art therapy, group therapy, particular physical exercises, etc. You can join some institutes like Art of living Foundation. And last but not the least, live in present, don’t take life too seriously and make happiness an integral part of your life.
