I have a nephew who is interested in music and was looking for a website that could provide some basic concepts. I ran across this San Francisco Symphony (SFS) Kids’ Site and it is absolutely wonderful. The creators express a love of music and a commitment to music education within their community and beyond. This website allows communities who do not have access to the SFS a great way for people of all ages to hear, learn, and have fun with music.

A Computer: The Perfect Holiday Gift

'Tis the holiday season and there are decisions, decisions, decisions. The choices are limitless--teddy bears, game systems, bicycles, books, educational toys, toiletries, gift cards, travel and the list goes on. At the top of my list is a computer--preferably a laptop. If you have a computer and an internet connection, then with the click of a finger you can do just about anything at the fraction of the cost. And then, you can explore what to do next.

I am a lover of zoos, and mind you there is nothing like the real thing. But the next best thing is an hour at the online San Diego Zoo. I can actually watch Yun Zi and Gao Gao, the great pandas, live on the Panda Cam. Another favorite is the Honolu Zoo featuring an entire page of exciting zoo video shorts.

Online museums are another example of the ability of a computer to bring excitement, history, and relevence into our lives daily and at our convenience. My personal favorite is the online Smithsonian Institute--there is just so much at this site.

Looking for fun and games--there is plenty of that as well. I have a special liking for sites that combine fun with learning. Sites such as GameGoo, Who Wants to Win $1,000,000, and Puzzle Pixies provide hours of learning and fun. Nixing the educational slant and going fullblast fun, sites such as GameSloop.com and Yahoo Games provide plenty of entertainment. Another favorite place is You Tube--I have sat at my computer for hours watching old videos of Nat King Cole, Elvis, Sam Cook and others who died before I was talking. There are also the old Saturday Night Live clips. Of course, young folks will enjoy the likes of Justin Bieber and Beyonce.

Let us not forget the world of shopping. Its a great place to get deals and research items that you are thinking about purchasing in a brick and mortor establishment. I'm an avid Amazon.com and eBay Shopper, but the traditional retailers such as Wal-Mart, Target , Bloomingdales, FAO Schwarz and many more have an online presence as well.

The one thing the computer doesn't do is get you out in the fresh air and moving those body parts so by all means buy those bicycles and visit some of the places discussed but a computer certainly worth considering as a holiday purchase.

Lastly, if you're going to be online then do it safely. The FBI's "A Parent Guide to Interent Safety" provides tips on keeping you and all your loved ones safe with this wonderful toy.

A birthday is looming, the holidays are coming, just got my bonus and I need to shop--there are so many reasons we find ourselves searching for that perfect gift for the young people in our lives. Although at first glance not the most inviting site, once you start digging in Thinkfinity you will find all kinds of nuggets. The site features lessons plans for educators and parents. It partners with several of the best educational resources on the web. Some are web powerhouses such as EDSITEment, the Smithsonian Institute and National Geographic. But there are also partnerships with smaller but very effective educational resources such as Wonderopolis, Illuminations, and the Kennedy Center’s ArtsEdge. And if you keep digging, there is more and more and more.

The site offers lesson plans, educational games, activities and more. The gateway page asks if you are a parent, educator or student and the resources are wonderful. Being that its summer, the Afterschool Resources section caught our eye and it is full of of great activities--the selected resources and activities are a must see.

Thinkfinity is a big, bold site. Don't go play if you have an old, slow computer. But if you have the technology, this a site you don't want to miss.

Jump Into the Melting Pot

The United States is often referred to as a "melting pot" -- a place where people of many different cultures and beliefs live together. Many contend that because of this mix of people, our country is more interesting than it would be if everyone were the same. Some think otherwise. But do most Americans know enough about the different cultures and beliefs of their co-workers and neighbors to ascertain if this is true or not? One thing is for sure, diversity has definitely added another dimension to the presidential election--from both a voter and a candidate perspective.

Having attended many Black History Month programs, I have observed most of them were full of other African Americans. I find these celebrations to be enjoyable and educational. However, it seems to me the programs would also benefit other cultures, other ethnicities.
And, I think it would be enlightening to know more about their history and culture.

The opportunity is certainly there. We celebrate Black History Month this month, Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in May, Hispanic Heritage Month in September and American Indian Heritage Month in November. That is just to name a few. If we look around us, there are many opportunities to learn more about the many peoples that comprise our America.

Carter G. Woodson is known as the Father of Black History. He founded Negro History Week, the precursor to Black History Month. His message was Blacks should be proud of their heritage and that other Americans should also understand it. Taking Dr. Woodson’s assertion a step further, perhaps all Americans should be proud of their heritage and other Americans should also understand it. This would likely benefit race relations.

In addition to attending gatherings, many wonderful books and websites present the opportunity to explore different cultures. Many of the websites offer not only news and information but also interactive opportunities:
