AirAsia recently aired its TV commercial in Malaysia and regional cable channels such as AXN. The Amazing AirAsia theme promotes the amazing intangible benefits of flying with the low-cost carrier: convenience, people, buddies, smiles, memories and friendliness.

Impressive TVC with a catchy jingle and a strong skew towards raising brand awareness. There are 2 versions of this TVC (Wink & Bunny), with slight differences between them, available on YouTube and the official website.

Toyota Vios - wouldn't you wish for one?

This TV commercial by Toyota was aired in 2006. It has never failed to make me laugh every time I watch it — one of those classics that cuts across any region and culture, which explains why this same TVC was used across a few other countries in South East Asia.

The TVC shows two men stranded on an island, who end up freeing a genie from a lamp. They are granted one wish each. No points for guessing how it ends, but you will soon realise that it is very well executed and lives up to the Vios theme:

Ciplak - a different kind of pirate

Ciplak is a feature length movie by Khairil M. Bahar, which was released in selected GSC cinemas on November 23, 2006. There are a few versions of the trailers on YouTube, and the official website. It is indeed different, and I found the trailer to be very engaging, as much as it was close to reality.

Synopsis:

In a country such as Malaysia piracy isn’t just common: it’s indispensable. Everything from clothes and shoes to CD’s and video games are available in bootleg form. Piracy has allowed the underprivileged to afford over-priced sneakers, exposed the ignorant to the wonders of non-top 40 music and increased the cinema vocabulary of an entire nation through pirated DVD’s. For Jo, DVD piracy has it’s other advantages. As a Malaysian student studying in England he travels to and fro every couple of months. But unlike other Malaysian students, 12 cartons of duty free cigarettes aren’t the only thing he neglects to declare at customs. Taking advantage of the fact that pirated DVD’s come out before a movie’s cinematic release and with UK movie releases often a few months after they come out Stateside, Jo’s discovered the perfect scam for extra cash: England has the demand and Malaysia has the supply. Now in his final year of university and on the last day of his last visit to Malaysia before finishing up his degree and settling in ‘back home’ for good, he’s about to make the biggest shipment yet: 175 movies. With a buyer in England who’ll pay 50 pounds a DVD in order to make copies, Jo’s hit the jackpot. Too bad he’s chosen the day KL is hit with the biggest anti-piracy raid in history to pick up his shipment.

Toyota Vios - Loch Ness trap

This TV commercial by Toyota was aired in 2005 to promote the Toyota Vios, a mid-sized sedan. Rather than placing emphasis on its performance versus price and zesty engine, the ad focussed on the theme:

The irresistible Vios – you’ll want one

The TVC shows how a monster akin to the Loch Ness, baits a jogger with a Vios. My favourite part is when the monster pops back out of the water to neatly set up the decoy again. Cute!

Despite the absence of an audio narration, this TVC packs a good punch!

Petronas - Boys in the Hood (Deepavali 2003)

This Deepavali TV commercial by Petronas is one that many in Malaysia will recollect with a smile. Featuring a bunch of Indian youths in Bangsar, it was aired across local TV stations in 2003 in conjunction with Deepavali. It captures the reality of Malaysia today, i.e. showcasing the common image of Malaysian Indian youth influenced by American hip-hop, while enforcing the positive values of society.

Kudos to the creative team behind this TVC, and this one-liner:

The world is changing but we will always be proud of who we are

Side note: This TVC was filmed in the Telawi area of Bangsar, an urban residential area made famous by its nightlife. Mezza is now known as T-Club, and the pasar malam (night market) is something that is real and alive up to this day.
