5AwesomeGays Comes to an End

The LGBTQ collaboration channel 5AwesomeGays came to an end last week after three years on the web. The channel was known for reaching out to gay youth and giving them a place to voice their feelings. Tyler Oakley was the last of the original 5AwesomeGays to remain on the channel throughout the entire three year run. At over 800 videos, this channel was one of the longest running collaboration channels since the start of the collaboration channel trend. The group plans on going their separate ways online but will continue to make videos individually.

YouTuber Feared Dead Found Alive

Youtuber willdabeast went missing following a tornado in Joplin, Missouri. At least 116 people have been confirmed killed and even more are missing. Will Norton was violently thrown out of his vehicle when he and his father were caught in the middle of the tornado. ~~CNN reports that Will has been found. He will be on CNN tonight in just a few hours.~~

Update 5/24/11 7:00 pm CT:
We previously reported that Will Norton was found safe. CNN received an unconfirmed report yesterday that he was at one of the area hospitals but was transfered to another. The Norton family has yet to find Will and they are still seeking information on his whereabouts. You can contribute any information regarding his disappearance here.

Update 5/25/11 5:17 pm CT: Anderson Cooper tweeted that the original report of Will being found was false. He was never located at a hospital. The family is now searching through debris to possibly locate him.

Will Norton's body was discovered today. Thanks to the YouTube community complete strangers were able to connect with this young man. His spirit lives on through the videos he created.

Peter Coffin Gets Nailed

A young woman made allegations today that YouTuber Peter Coffin started a fake account pretending to be his girlfriend. The victim claims that he was harassing her for getting a nose job and after blocking him was contacted by his asian girlfriend. Read more about it here.

Update 3/24/2011

The woman posted this follow-up article claiming that Coffin pretended to be his own lawyer in an email to her which included a cease and desist.

We also happened upon this cache'd facebook post by Peter Coffin mentioning his alleged girlfriend.

Racism is also important to me because a year ago, I met a woman named Kimiko Kobayashi (through Twitter, so don't even try pretend Twitter is useless. Also Egypt). Kimi has a vulgar sense of humor and a heart of gold. I love her in the way people loved each other in the 1800s: a dramatic, insane love that you probably would find hard to believe.

She also - as you might guess from her name - is Asian. Japanese, to be exact. Honestly, I had no idea how racist people were towards Asian people until seeing how she is treated. First, for whatever reason, she is constantly compared to other Asian people. In more than one sense, too; in the general sense, "you're pretty for an Asian" or "your boobs are big for an Asian." Side note: I have seen that on her @replies on Twitter more than you can imagine (the latter, that is). I won't won't go into intricate detail here, but the qualifier "for an Asian" is not necessary.

Peter Coffin released the following statements today on twitter:

I attempted to stop this privately with Xiaxue, who she seems quite intent on ruining me. Kimi is not me, I'm not sure who she is.

I honestly wanted to work it out, but you can't make something real. I want her to be real. Desperately, even. In fact, that is all I want.

But at this moment, you are attacking me for making something up. I didn't. I don't even know how to put what has happened to me.

You can say what you'd like, but you need to know that yes. I did something blind, stupid and embarrassing hanging on to someone...

I didn't know that long. But I didn't invent this. I wish I had, but I didn't.

Listen, if I were that mentally ill to make her up, I'd be dead right now. I didn't. I'm heartbroken and just dead inside.

I'm not even asking you to do anything. You wanted my explanation, you have it. I probably won't be posting again for a while. Peace.

Ark Music Factory Exploiting Kids?

This past weekend we learned of the viral hit “Black Friday” by Rebecca Black. A YouTuber by the username of shirtsareoverrated did a little research on the Ark Music Factory (The company that produced the “Black Friday” song and music video) and it turned out there was more to the story than first thought.

Our team at ARK have certainly recognized that raw talent alone is sufficient to get noticed. However, to further advance as a professional within the music industry, it is absolutely essential for an artist to have hit singles and a well executed image - all within that marketable package!

Once again we at YTgossip would like to apologize for the long hiatus. We have plenty of articles in store for the remainder of this year and hope you will continue to support us.

This weekend a new YouTube star by the name of Rebecca Black was born. Her hit new song "Black Friday" became one of the most talked about videos on the internet over the course of just a few days. It became popular mostly due to the fact that the lyrics lack creativity. Of course, the catchy tune injected itself into the brains of everyone that listened to it. If you're one of the lucky few that has yet to watch this music video, here you go:

Teen Choice Awards with Michael Buckley

Michael Buckley of the Whatthebuckshow was given the privilege to host the red carpet event to the Teen Choice Awards tonight over the internet.

Buck had a chance to interview a few YouTubers like CharlesTrippy and iJustine, both of whom were up for awards in the same category. The two jokingly said that they believed ShaneDawson would win the award.

Stalker Fan Finds ShaneDawson’s House

A video on YouTube surfaced today in which a “fan” of shanedawson allegedly followed him home from VidCon and found out where he lives. Another person seen in the video also tweeted encouraging people to go to his house and burn it down.

Top 5 VidCon Moments

I know you all have missed us in the last week. We’ve been out and about at VidCon2010 in Los Angeles. To put things into perspective: VidCon was 1,000,000x greater than The Streamy’s (although we shouldn’t give The Streamy’s that much credit).

We ran into a ton of YouTubers there although our identity remained sealed with the exception of two people we met.

By now, we’re sure you’ve heard all the details about VidCon but here’s our top 5 greatest moments there:

5. A F$#%ing Ball Pit!

That’s right! Hank Green somehow managed to get his hands on over 1k ball pit balls for YouTubers to play with during their free time.

4. The Concerts

Davedays and Italktosnakes were probably the best performances of all the concerts. People were all over the dance floor!

3. HiImRawn Bikini Dance

We don’t know whether it was Rawn’s amazing singing or his amazing body that took our breath away.

2. Double-Rainbow OMG!!

It seemed like the live performance of “Double Rainbow” was better than the autotuned version by autotunethenews but we’ll let you be the judge of that.

1. The Almighty Ze Frank

His speech blew everyone’s mind away and the ChillOut song brought everyone to tears (seriously).

Death Threats at VidCon

Recently PeterCoffin became aware of a change in JaseHaber’s subscriber count that seems to go up dramatically only during certain times of the day. Here’s a photo provided by PeterCoffin through VidStatsX of JaseHaber’s subscriptions [clicking the images directs you to PeterCoffin’s post]:

After posting a Facebook note explaining all this, Peter Coffin has received death threats from someone telling Peter to watch his back at VidCon. Here’s a twitpic of the threats this person has made.

New VidCon Sponsors Raise Hope for Free Swag

The folks in charge of VidCon obtained a few new sponsors for the event this past week. Word spread quickly through Twitter that Flip Video™ is one of the sponsors.

Back in 2008 at YouTube Live, only a few YouTube Partners got these Flip cameras. Some people are hoping for a scenario similar to YouTube Live where a select percentage of people get free Flip cameras.

Other new sponsors include HitViews, itiBiti, Dailybooth, and LaDiDa. VidCon also reached a deal with sponsor Orabrush to pay for free wifi at the Century Plaza hotel during VidCon.

YouTube Defeats Viacom in $1 Billion Lawsuit

In a surprise victory, YouTube successfully defended themselves against big media. Last year, Viacom publically sued the video sharing site for allowing copyrighted material to stay on their website. Some of the copyrighted material uploaded to YouTube was intentionally put there by ViaCom under anonymous accounts. YouTube and Google released the following statement today:

“This is an important victory not just for us, but also for the billions of people around the world who use the web to communicate and share experiences with each other. We’re excited about this decision and look forward to renewing our focus on supporting the incredible variety of ideas and expression that billions of people post and watch on YouTube every day around the world.” -Kent Walker, Vice President and General Counsel

R.I.P. Grandma Dawson

Today, YouTube mourns the loss of quite possibly the funniest grandma on the internet. She brought smiles to people all over the world with her smile and youthful attitude. In a statement left on twitter by her grandson, ShaneDawson:

Grandma died this morning. She was the most loved grandma in the world becuz of all of your prayers. RIP Grandma <3

Awards Show Circus!

Now, we probably wouldn’t have been writing a story about the Streamys again if it weren’t for tonight's absolutely miserable production value. It started with the terribly cheesy jokes. Michael Buckley (host of the whatthebuckshow) was the anticipated winner of the best web series host but lost in a shocking defeat.

Throughout the show, the audio kept cutting out and it only got worse. Two men ran onto the stage completely naked at which point the host gave up on holding the show together. It was an abysmal show to say the least and extremely disrespectful to those that showed up expecting to be celebrated.

The one entertaining moment of the night was when AutoTune the News decided to autotune a bunch of youtubers’ videos live on stage… without any problems!

Oh, but it gets worse! Shaycarl and OlgaKay were hassled by production staff because they ran on the stage during a presentation. In a twitter statement Olga says:

I would like to make a public apology for my self and @shaycarl 4 jumping on the stage @streamyawards we thought we were on the break!!!

The highlight of the night for the YouTube community was when ShaneDawson won a Streamy for the best vlogger category.

And just when it seemed like the show couldn’t go crazier, ShayCarl got up onto the stage AGAIN and made out with Lisanova. You have to love YouTubers. The show ended on a sour note when the host kept making fun of the low audience turnout.

YouTubers nominated at 2010 Streamy Awards

Tonight, people from all over the internet are going to be in Los Angeles for the 2010 Streamy Awards. For those of you unaware of what the Streamys are, it is an award ceremony that celebrates the achievements of internet personalities.

This year, Chad Hurley (co-founder and CEO of YouTube) is to receive the Visionary Award at The Streamys. Some notable YouTube partners are also up for awards in various categories. You can expect to see Shane Dawson, Michael Buckley, Sxephil, iJustine and even a speech from Ian and Anthony of Smosh during the show tonight.

Here are a few of the nominees and categories:

The Streamys are one of the few award shows broadcasted live all over the world at the same time. It’s being streamed on their website on April 11 at 5:30pm PT / 8:30pm ET.

Miley Cyrus & Davedays a Couple?

There was speculation last week that davedays was going to have Miley Cyrus guest star in his next video after he posted a photo on Dailybooth of himself inside Disney Studios.

Later that week he posted this picture of somebody that looks like Miley Cyrus and someone that looks like himself.

In his most recent tweet, Dave writes:

“Going to the premiere for Miley's movie The Last Song. My date just arrived. She kinda looks like her, don't you think?”

Judging by this photo he linked in that tweet, it looks like we can expect to see some more REAL Miley in his next video.

New Insight Features

YouTube updated the insight feature this week to provide content providers with the ability to see the loss/gain of subscribers on a visible chart.

This new feature comes with gradual redesign of YouTube. To access this chart, go to “My Account” then click the “Insight” link and it will be on the “Subscribers” tab at the bottom.

Viacom vs. YouTube

Anyone who has been on YouTube in the last year knows that DMCA claims can completely destroy a YouTube channel. In newly released court document for the case of Viacom vs. Youtube, Viacom is suing YouTube for hosting copyrighted videos and not making a good enough attempt at preventing the upload of copyrighted content.

Today YouTube released a lengthy statement on their blog stating that they have done everything reasonably possible to block copyrighted content. YouTube even claims that Viacom intentionally posted their own content on YouTube.

“For years, Viacom continuously and secretly uploaded its content to YouTube, even while publicly complaining about its presence there. It hired no fewer than 18 different marketing agencies to upload its content to the site. It deliberately "roughed up" the videos to make them look stolen or leaked. It opened YouTube accounts using phony email addresses. It even sent employees to Kinko's to upload clips from computers that couldn't be traced to Viacom. And in an effort to promote its own shows, as a matter of company policy Viacom routinely left up clips from shows that had been uploaded to YouTube by ordinary users. Executives as high up as the president of Comedy Central and the head of MTV Networks felt "very strongly" that clips from shows like The Daily Show and The Colbert Report should remain on YouTube.” —Zahavah Levine, YouTube Chief Counsel

YouTube continues to allow people to freely upload their own content to the site so long as it abides by the current Terms of Service. In the event that YouTube loses this case against Viacom, it could dramatically affect the future of the internet.

We’re Going to VidCon

So we announced this earlier this week on our twitter account but incase you missed it, we’re going to be at VidCon this year.

For those of you that have no idea what VidCon is, it’s a convention of people from the internet (mostly YouTubers). Organized by Hank Green of the VlogBrothers, it’s an attempt to get the YouTube community together to discuss the future of internet media.

If you’re going, you can expect to see some familiar YouTubers like Shane Dawson, Smosh, and even Ray William Johnson. We’re going to be there all 3 days of the conference so if you’re there be sure to @reply us that day. You may even get a chance to meet one of us! (details on that in a later article)

It’s been a really long time since our last post. Get ready for a brand new website layout and regularly updated content! Now, with that said, let’s get to the story:

For the past 6 months, our crew has been keeping an eye out on YouTube for people that stood out from the rest of the crowd. Here is one guy that has some outstanding video editing skills.

Hunter of Huntertainment uses special effects like a pro in his videos. His style is comparable to that of Wastetimechasingcars (without the update vlogs).

In one of his more recent videos, Hunter uses annotations to create an interactive battle between the viewer and a rogue robot.

Nick Vs. YouTube TwitterFight!

This just happened in the last hour. Buck explains everything pretty well in his video but here’s what happened:

In Buck’s previous video he explains that he wanted everyone to unfollow Nickelodeon star from iCarly, Jennette McCurdy on Twitter because he believed she was a spambot.

Jennette later unfollowed Buck and stated in a tweet:

“…He used a lot of foul language, and I have many young viewers etc. I watch who I follow cuz of that.” –Jenette McCurdy

That’s when Shane Dawson got involved and made a video addressing fake celebrities.

In the end, everyone ended up forgiving each other via twitter.

Willis of ClipCritics Comes to Life

People are always asking if Willis from the YouTube channel Clipcritics is real. Yesterday, Captain Chuck addressed this issue in a video in which Willis made his first “real life” public appearance in a video.

If you’re not familiar with the Clipcritics we suggest you watch some of their videos. They do reviews on videos and all of them have unique humor you can only find with these characters.

YouTube Goes 3D

We told you about it in a tweet the other day, and now the future of YouTube is here.. kind of. YouTube is allowing people to test out the new 3D feature in their videos. All it requires is that you make a video using 2 slightly different angles of the same setting and then uploading the video with the two clips side-by-side.

To enable 3D, all you need to do is put yt3d:enable=true in the video’s tag. You can also adjust it by using yt3d:aspect=16:9 or yt3d:swap=true.

To view a video in 3D, you must watch it from the original YouTube link. There will be a pulldown menu where you can adjust the color depending on what type of 3D glasses you have.

Partners’ Collab Channel to Debut Today

YouTube partners Lisanova, KassemG, ShaneDawsonTV, ShayCarl, DaveDays, Sxephil, TheBdonski, Daxflame and Hiimrawn are scheduled to upload a teaser trailer on the new YouTube channel TheStation later on today. With all these well-known YouTubers on this collaboration channel, would most likely make this become the most-subscribed collab channel of all time and potentially allow them to pass Fred in subscribers.
