This journey that I have recently taken has had its ups and downs. My initial plan was to go with illustration, I wanted to do something different for my final outcome so that I wouldn't get as bored or feel like I shouldn't be doing this work or I have chosen the wrong brief for me. I chose the illustration brief so that I could express my self in a different way, something I have never tried before. So, my first idea about illustration was to hand draw what ever scenes I chose from reading the book. Little did I know, it was harder to do so. I had many practise drawing real life objects that were set in my class room. The tasks that were set were fun and enjoyable, it was there to see what you were capable of doing. Although this wasn't my field, I still tried my best to draw as much as I could and as well as I could.
After doing the observational drawing, we looked at collages, to be more precise, digital collage. This I found comfortable; using CAD software, using all my knowledge that I have of how to create certain techniques.
So for my final out comes I have decided to go with collages as I felt more comfortable doing this and I would prepare well for the exam. How this developed was a long process. At first drawing was my initial idea, then I did a Ciara Phelan inspired collage which open my eyes to the idea of having different forms or style and media to form one huge work of art, the collage. I still tried different techniques for my hand drawing illustration, so I looked at Julia Opie. So my next piece came from her.
Later, after refining and reviewing, I looked over my collage work and my hand drawn work. I found that my collage work was more interesting than my hand drawn work. This then left me to decide to go with collage for my final piece. So I started to look at different artists to get inspiration from.
Now that I decided what to do, I then chose three scenes in the book and decided to go for the cover as well . This links with the theme "Inside, Outside and In-Between"as I am doing a cover (outside) and scenes within the story (inside and in-between)

I looked at Ciara Phelan, Danny Allison, Michelle Thompson, all of these artist have helped me develop my ideas and concepts for my collage, Ciara Phelan has inspired me the most as her work stood out to me compared to the other artists. My first collage was inspired by Ciara Phelan which I think was a big deal as it "opened my eye" to the idea of collage.
Here is a work that I did

I very much loved the idea of having different effect for each object for example the aeroplane or the wardrobe. Although, these were not my pictures that I took,I used the internet to get these images. For my exam, I will be using my very own images and develop it my self. In a a way, her work has led to create my own version of collage with different technique. This has shown that I have been developed.

At one point I visited The Photographers Gallery in London, it didn't inspire me or my work as I wasn't to fond of their work that were displayed. Although, the collage activity was very helpful in deciding which technique would be a good idea, for example exquisite collage.
I have done many different experiments and I have gone to develop them too. I am planing to use the layering effect that I tried out at the start of this project. this will make the final piece more interesting. I will also incorporate come hand drawn images onto my final piece as well so that there is mix media rather than just one type.
In conclusion, I found this project harder compared to the other projects I previously done. The theme was a hard theme and complex. The idea of inside, outside and in-between made everything harder. On the other hand, I have improved my skills with drawing and using the application on the computer in this project. It was an enjoy experience with both challenging and easy tasks. In terms of my final outcome, I think I will be pleased as I have gone through both hand drawn and collage experiences to get the knowledge of both in my head so that I know what I can input into my collage from the hand drawing experience. So I think that my final outcome will contain most of what I have learn over the past few months.

Here are some textures that I will be using for my final outcome. I have gone with splatters as it adds more of a collage effect. I created each of theses splatters using water colour and will take out the white background and use the actual splatters.

Ciara Phelan

This work was created by Ciara Phelan who is freelance illustration and paper craft artist. She has worked with many big branded companies such as Ryan Air Virgin Media and many many more. Ciara Phelan works from Open which is a shared studios with other artists. There they can share and create ideas together and so all sorts. She graduated from Brighton University back in 2008 in Graphics Design which then lead her onto working as a junior at a small company called IWANT Design based in East London which have many awards along with many varieties of clients. They are into computer arts and CD packaging and many more. They also focus on illustration. In 2010, Ciara Phelan commenced her own company to work on her own skills and visual language. She likes collecting vintage emphemera and likes cutting things out. Miss Phelan co-founded Many Hands back in 2011 where customers are able to buy contemporary prints and product straight away.
This work is called "Summer in the City" which was created by Ciara. It is a pull out poster as Miss Phelan has said on her website. It is for Nylon, a magazine company who asked her to do a pull out poster of various cities in the USA. Each City have their own places or areas to go to. I have chosen to analyse this piece as I have a similar idea of creating my final outcome that seems to come from this artist and her work.
Although her techniques of ding her collage are a bit different but it is similar as she cuts her work where as i will be cropping images form pictures I have taken.

Well this illustration as I have already said is a pull out poster showcasing five different cities where summer is the topic here. Ciara Phelan has said so her self on her website. Also it looks like the images that are within the college relate to the cities that are present, for example the traffic lights and sign post saying New York. Again that sign is also relative to the entire collage as it signifies journey. Quote from Ciara Phelan about this work "My illustration was designed to feel vibrant and summery whilst placing each city on a map of America and showing off its street style." I agree that she has done so to achieve this goal. This work is vibrant, the colours brings it to life. I feel like this piece falls into college with illustration. It is clear it is a college. The theme in this piece is summer, the title clearly suggests this where also the images used to form the collage is all summer related. For example a lady wearing a bikini. The reason why summer was the theme is because she was asked to "illustrate their Summer in the City guide" for Nylon magazine. There maybe other themes to this aswell like holiday, each image conveys fun and holiday. We usually associate Summer to be the fun part of the year where holidays are taken place. Lots of people travel and explore and this leads to another type of theme traveling. As this college is about illustrating five major cities, they are all spread out across the USA and to go to each state traveling occurs. The title is clear in this collage, it conveys the idea of holiday, touring. The word Summer really sums it up though. Summer can mean a lot to anyone like holidays, travel, exploring new places and many more so the title is very informative . From this title you can also tell straight away the illustration is going to be about places to go to. This work is about a guide where people can look at it and decide where to go. It is more about tourist attraction, places to visit and site see. The work is reflective to what Ciara Phelan has said she wanted to achieve a vibrant and summery style which I agree she has achieved. The deeper meaning in this I think the artist is trying to convey is; enjoy the summer as much as possible. The imagery used surely does show us about how fun the summer can be. I believe that she found inspiration from the title and also the task was handed down to her which she collaborated with Volcom.

In terms of aesthetics, the artist here has used a variety of materials and techniques. One major technique would be cropping out selected images and I believe she also does cutting outs too, so maybe there's a mixture of magazine, book images along with digital images. This adds the emphasis of mixed media into the collage, hence making it different making it come to life. Also there seems to be images that have been edited like the purple minivan, she may have added a filter or effect like noise or cutout to make it seem retro. This gives off a retro atmosphere to the collage, as it some sort of history is to be learnt to understand this. It is odd to have an old van in the middle of the collage but what the van signifies tells us a different story as those vans were very popular and people used them to travel around in. So having that image of the van is significant to the theme of travel and holiday. The process of making this is unknown but from what I have gathered, I believe that there's a bit of both handmade and computer aided design. The way the artist uses colour is very clever, the brighter colours are used with the hotter and common states on the map. For example, the green limes and oranges and strawberries are used for L.A where it is a common state for tourist to enjoy the sun where are got New York the colours used are not as bright as New York isn't that type of state compared to a beach state. Also the use of colours everywhere else make the work vibrant as Ciara Phelan has suggested. It really makes it look like it's a summer poster. Summer is about colourful images and she has used them well here for this collage. In this there are some textures added to some images like the background images, the base. There is some sort of texture added to that to make it seem vintage. This also make it work well with the other images like the van and many others. Also there are some patters scattered across the work. A blue red and green strip runs across come images but they are not very visible. Also there are come light colour shapes behind the work pieces. I think this balances out the amount of pictures with other objects.

In my opinion, I like this work in terms of techniques and materials Ciara Phelan has used to portray the image of summer. I chose to analyse this as I found it interesting to have a guide with just three states and using collage to illustrate a guide. what I dislike about this were the amount of vintage imagery used, I think that it is a bit too much it over balances out against the other images of flowers or fruits. What I like about this is the colours she has used to illustrate summer. I think she has done well to show what summer is like, colourful and "vibrant". I have not seen other works like this by different artists. It has inspired me to create my own version using my own images and editing them out to form a similar style to Ciara Phelan.

Process of making a digital collage

For this collage my aim was to make the collage look old like in the WW2. I used circles and filled them in a low contrast orange this gives off an interesting mood to the collage. Also the colours works well together.

so the first thing I did was to add noise to the background to make it seem 1940. So i just simple clicked on Filter/Noise/Add Noise I then set the Amount to 20 percent.

Then I got some images of bushes and edited them by adding a filter Cutout I adjusted the levels a bit to make the bush less detailed so that it makes the image a bit older.

Here I added a layer of hand drawn animals that I found and set the layer to Overlay so that it adds texture to the collage. It also offsets the balance between the orange and cream background making it a bit different.

On this step I used a picture of a lion that I took when I went to the zoo.

After inserting the lion image, I cropped out the background and filtered the lions head by adding cutout.

Adding the tree was one off the hardest things to do as I had to crop out the tree from the background which I didn't know at first but came to know after a while of playing around. I also added cutout filter.

I also added a lamp post that I took add added the filter Artistic/ Dry brush

Adding a layer of sky with the sun and setting the opacity to around 45%.

I also added an aeroplane to signify the fact that it was WW2 this book was based on.

I will use this tree for one of the illurations pieces as I found a part in the story that this type of tree imitates a human figure

The lampost is very important I think in Narnia. I will be using this for two illustration pieces in this project.

These are pictures that I took that I may use for my final outcome. For example the lamp post for the first scene that I will illustrate. I will also use these picture for textures for my digital collage.

Review and Refine

The materials I used were different types of papers, the base the was cartridge paper, where the actual image of the lion shown. Then are about three or four different layers of tracing paper with hand drawn copy of the lion.These were my first attempts on using collage with julian Opie. I used different techniques to portray this illustration. The main technique was over lays. I first copied the image onto tracing paper. On each layer/tracing paper, I use different types of techniques like using pen to give a rough sketch of the lions head. on another layer I carefully outline the head with a red pen so that I to add a bit of colour to the collage. For the bottom layer I used colouring pencil. I felt like using these technique so that it makes the piece more unique and different. I think that I makes the work stand out. The layering of illustrates a movement of the lions head, hence why this technique is suitable for these types of images.
Doing this was easy, although choosing the right order to place the tracing papers were hard. different types of layers that are placed in different way can turn the outcome looking very differently, so choosing the right order in which to place the tracing paper has to be right. For example, if i placed the red outline layer in front then the red will take over making the other layers meaningless, but if I used the black outline layers and placed the red layers underneath then it balances out the colour contrast.
One way of improving this work would have been to use different types of techniques to create an outline. Although I used various types on this work but they were almost similar. I don't think that I would like to work on this again, my initial idea was to use layers and hand drawn image to illustrate my drawing.
I got inspired to do this piece from this image below.

I liked the messy side of this work. Also the colours used on the right image. Although the artist is unknown, it reminds me of Alberto Giacometti sketches like so.

Comparing my work with the example work piece, they both have similar techniques. Although the example was more detailed and also has more colours that makes each layer stands out. unlike mine, I had two colours for my layers, red and black. one difference is that on my work, I have a background image, e.g the lions head.with the example, there only seems to be different layers all combined into one.
I wanted to make my a little bit different from the example given hence the background image of the lions head.
in terms of developing this for my final outcome, I think that I will use the layers only and create a digital collage.

After reviewing this work, I then decided to look back at other collages I did beforehand.

I liked this collage and I think it would better to use this style of work for my final outcome. Further more, I think that I will experiment on using my previous technique of overlaying along with digital collage so that it looks different and unique. This i think will form a new form of style, something completely different.
The artist that I will be looking at for this kind of style would be Ciara Phelen which uses similar style to the digital collage I created.

This tiger isn't relevant to the story. I chose to upload it because it has features that I may use for my collages e.g the stripes can be used for textures.

This raindeer is related to the story of Narnia. The raindeers are used for the Queen of Narnia and also Santa clause

I like this idea of layering as it portrays the illusion of movement.

Julia Potts inspired work Review and Refine

This is drawing of me.

Here is a portrait drawing of with a hint of Julia Potts inspired style. I got inspired by Julia Pott's style so I used the self portrait and made some features like the nose and mouth and eyes seem more like Julia Potts work.

Using these ideas were very effective I think, I made the portrait stand out even more, also made it look different to what you usually expect; something very detailed and precise. For this I wanted it to be very simple and clear which I think I have achieved.

This after reviewing the Julia Potts self drawing I previously done, I looked back into my sketch book and saw this collage that I liked, so I tried to incorporate this idea into this new drawing. I think that it works well as there's a mix of media; hand drawn and digital collage.

What I don't like about this is the drawing over powering the other collages materials in the background. I think it would look better if it were balanced out for example dropping the opacity down or having the items in front of the face so that it's not overpowering.

Julia Opie

The artist that has inspired me lately for my Illustration is called Jullian Opie. He is a Painter and sculpturer, he currently resides in London where he creates most of his work pieces. He is fifty five years old; he graduated from Goldsmiths' school of Art in 1983. His works are more or less based on human bodies and landscapes. On his website, you can find a significant amount of human paintings and one or two animation that he created. The work I am going to talk about is called "The Best Of Blur", it is an album cover for a well known band called the Blur, the album was released back in the year 2000. The Blur was a band of four that came under the category of alternative rock, pop and indie rock. I have chosen to analyse this piece because I find her work of simplicity to be more effective. The way she draws or creates the characters true shows us how detailed it is but not from actual details found within the painting. I also want to use this style of art and adapt it to create me own for my illustration. I believe the simpler the illustration the better the story.

This art work is now shown in the National Portraits Gallery where any is able to see this work of his. To make this, he used a computer. The process is unknown but I assume that he may have used CAD software and selected areas e.g. the hair then filling it with the a tone of colours selected from the original picture. I this may be linked to pop art due to the colours used although they are not bright colours but light and calm. It has a slight resemblance to another piece of album cover by the Queens called Hot Space. He has said that "I often feel that trying to make something realistic is the one criteria I can feel fairly sure of. Another one I sometimes use is, would I like to have it in my room? And I occasionally use the idea, if God allowed you to show Him one to judge you by, would this really be it?" He uses these questions to inspire his art work, to make his art work to look as it looks.

I can also assume that each colour behind each band member represents their personality. For example the yellow symbolizes peace and calmness.

Speaking in terms of techniques Julian Opie may have used to create this would most likely to be computer aided design. Like his other work, they are mostly computer generated. What interest me the most is the thing black lines that shape up each of the members. The simplicity of the way each member is created makes it look even more vibrant. Rather than having little details to imitate the realistic object, the simple lines do just fine. Moreover, the colours he used to illustrate each member really make the work even more attractive. It makes it unique, something different to what you usually expect especially for an album cover.

I have chosen to look at this work because I find the simpler the drawing, the better the story. I think that is what's happening here, It is very simple to do. I would like to base my work on this factor, simple. When I first saw this, i didn't like it as much as it was just plain but after a while it stuck with me of how the simplest thing can be the most illustrative images. I believe this image is doing so. This work reminds me of Andy Warhols' work, although there is a slight resemblance in layout.

these are the scenes that I have chosen to illustrate for my Final outcome. I have chosen them because I found each scene very interesting and important to entire book. I believe that these scenes captures the crucial parts of the book.

Futher development from self portrait

As to go beyond my previous experiments, I copied the self portrait of me that I previously done and drew the outline. The aim for this was to keep the drawing as simple as possible. So I scanned the outlined drawing and brought it to Adobe Photoshop

After opening it up in Photoshop I opened the colour pallet that I made on my mood board . The reason why i used these colours was inspired by Julia Potts. Her used of colours really makes her characters different hence why I tried using these calm light colours. I believe that the simple the illustration the better.

2) select which colour to use
3) apply it to portrait

This was the final outcome. I like the use of the colours and how they all work well together.

Lion Drawings

the image on the left was create mt Man-Tsun. Man-Tsun is an Illustrator and a Graphic Designer. His work is truly amazing, most of his work uses some form of swirls and the colours he uses to illustrate his work make it unique and different. His website http://manxtsun.com/.
This work has inspired me to do my own. below shows how i developed a previous drawing into a digital image.

This is a drawing I done before. I scanned this into Adobe Illustrator

After scanning I then used the Swirl Tool on Illustrator to form the swirls. I adjusted the rate of the swirl and the size of the brush. this gave me this effect which i really liked.

I then took the Lion into Adobe Photoshop to place a gradient in the background. I used calm colours to set a mood to the lion especially when the outline is in black. I think it has worked well.

To try out new techniques, we were told to create four different mixed media collages.

Below are those four collages that I created. Now the main purpose for this was to draw over the stuck on collages. I had to get inspiration from what ever was inside The Photographers Gallery. The drawings on each collage is from work pieces found within The Photographers Gallery.

My thoughts on this task were that it was strange as I had never used this type of technique before.

The Photographers Gallery Review

After visiting The Photographers Gallery on the 6th of March, there wasn't much to say about the whole exhibitions. The works that were displayed didn't impress me to an extant to inspire me. Although Laura Letinsky's work was the most interesting out of all the other artist that I found (Geraldo DE Barros and Clunie Reid). Her work was truly interesting. The colours that she uses in her work really catch your eyes. What is also more interesting is the objects she uses to portray multiple collages. She has said that the objects she uses are left overs that are found at a dinning table. She would take pictures of what ever was left on the table and the way she takes the photos is truly amazing, she would use a really old camera where she could adjust the lenses. By doing this, it gives the effect of the image of being really flat. I found her work interesting and colourful.

Now, the rest of the exhibition wasn't inspiring. I found some of Geraldo DE Barros’s work very dull. It was just photos that had cut outs. Although the way he developed his photos was interesting. He would cut out of the negatives and then use this to print out this work. Even though, this exhibition wasn't even part of the type of art I was after. It was just photographs. It looked like any one can do this. On the other hand the way he left his work was inspiring. It seemed like a mystery, it was left on a cliffhanger. It seemed like he worked till he died and that gave a whole new story about his work.
Clunie Reid’s work was just mess. All I saw was scribbles and doodles on white pieces of materials placed in columns. There were some aspects of her work that I found intriguing . for example on the left is a drawing she created. It is representing a woman. The way she drew this fascinates me, it resembled the body figure of a woman but what makes me curious is why there are smiley stickers stock on her head. It looked too much of a draft, sketch. Other people also agreed with my opinion.

The workshop I attended was enjoyable. They had a lot of materials that I used to make my collage. Also staff that led the workshop gave us a few ideas of what kind of collages that we could do. I found those ideas interesting and I really wanted to try them all out but time got the best of us. That was the most memorable moments out of all the trip to the gallery.
Here are the collages that I created
The first collages we did was called Exquisite Corpse, the aim was to have different body part to form one body. As you can see mine consists of a bird,a wing from an eagle, an umbrella and an old style photo of a lady. Also I added a few tissue paper to resemble clouds.
The second collage was merely a simple collage but had to be related to my chosen illustration for Narnia. I felt that using these found images were appropriate as they were related to the era where the story took place.

These are some of the collages that I created. I used a tutorial to create this collage. The main purpose of this was to try make the collage have a vintage effect. hence the noise was added to a few layers within the work.
What I like about it is the effect the noise creates with the collage, it makes it more elegant and bring out the vintage effect.
What I don't like about this work it the red rays, it was meant to be like rays on the example given above but I think it is too bright and off sets the balance of the colours.

Chris Ede inspired work

Here is my Chris Ede inspired work of a lion. I like this effect that I used. It makes the lion look more artistic. It also shows the wild in a sense as it has a rough draft like effect. What I do not like about this is that there are still some detailed parts of the lion. This gives off that the work did not really take effect.

What I like about this is the textures that I used for example the splatter behind the lions head, It balances out the colours as well as the objects.

Here is a collage that I created from a tutorial ( on the left). The purpose of this collage was to explore different techniques to use within a collage. As you can see here, there are a variety of different techniques used here. For example the Lions head; I played around with the tone settings to make the lion different from what it usual looks like. On this particular image I played around with the yellow settings, adjusting the levels of exposure and the levels of intensity.

What I like about this work are the different types of collages used to make the collage seem more vibrant.
What I do not like about this is the colours present in this. It makes it look dull and portrays a gloomy atmosphere.

This is a collage consisting of photos that I had previously taken. I cut out the lions mane and used Adobe Photoshop to combine the photos of trees I took and placed it behind the scanned cut out.

What inspired me was this image

with the drawing of the lion I previously done, I use it and cut the mane's outline. From this I gained the experience of experimenting with different object of picture behind or under the cut out. Here are some examples of what I have gained out of this.

I find that the coins here works well to act as the mane of a lion. The shine sure does give off a cool effect.

I like the newspaper effect. It gives off a typographical illustration.
