It has been a long time since I have lunch with my 2 ex-colleagues. We worked in the same team for more than a year and became good friends since then. I always wanted to join them but time is not allowing me to do so due to our different schedule. One week ago, I suggested to have a meet up session with them. They agreed. The next thing to think of, where to go for lunch. This is the hardest question to us. After listing out the suggestions, we decided for Azuma Japanese Restaurant, which is located in the 2nd floor of Penang Queensbay Mall, just beside Harvey Norman.

Entrance

The menu stand at the entrance. You can flip through the menu and most important, look at the price, before you make any decision to dine or not.

There is another promotional board just opposite the menu stand. Azuma Japanese Restaurant is having Father’s Day Special for the whole month of June.

Just after we got seated, we were given the menu.

Front

Back

Cutlery Set

Soy Sauce, tissues and tooth picks.

After ordering and waiting for some time, our food arrived.

Watari Gani Jyu (RM18), soft shell crab with rice. It comes with a Miso Soup and a pickle. My friend ordered this. Actually 3 of us wanted to order the set of the month. My friend knew I wanted to take photos, she decided to order this instead. At least, I can have different food photos. So nice!!!

One of them asked me to take it with the box cover.

Close up photo which I will not miss. I tasted some of the soft crab. Nice.

This is the set of the month, Akami Steak To Geso Salada, pan fried tuna steak in special sauce served with cuttlefish tentacle salad, rice and miso soup. Usual price will be RM35. During this promotional period, it was at RM18.

Pan fried tuna. It has a strong butter smell and taste.

Cuttlefish tentacle salad.

If you don’t want the white rice, you can exchange it with the Garlic Fried Rice, with additional RM2 charges.

On top of the main course, we also ordered the Kaisen Celery Itame (RM12), fresh seafood stir fried with celery. This is also one of the promotional item. Normal price will be RM22. It is just a normal dish. If without the 3 big prawns and some squid, it is not worth the price.

After the meal, we were served with the free green tea ice cream.

The ice cream taste good. Too bad it is only a small scoop. I prefer they provide us more. Yummy.

Some of the surrounding photos.

Overall, the food served in Azuma Japanese Restaurant was good. I just tried the set, never touch on the sashimi and other food yet. The environment is good, as you can see the Penang Bridge if you have a window seat. The time for serving the food is reasonable, no complain on that. For the price, I think it is a bit expensive over some of the food. If there is no promotion on the set lunch, I will think twice before ordering it. RM35 is a bit too expensive, RM18 is still acceptable.

I have a nice lunch in Azuma Japanese Restaurant with both of my friends. I think they are the same too. Hope to have our next lunch session soon in future.

Ko Fu Loft has a big banner in the main hall of Gurney Plaza. If you are taking the escalator, you will be able to see it. I have the chance to go for a food review together with all the food bloggers, thanks to Jian and Criz. If I am not mistaken, we have more than 20 people.

Let’s start with the Appetizers.

Ko Fu Sesame Seed Ball (RM10.90)
Taste normal. The minced meat is mixed with mushroom.

Crystal Spring Roll Skin Stuff with Vege & Chicken Meat (RM6.90)
If you just eat it without the sauce, it is tasteless. With the sauce, it makes it better. This appetizer can get in most of the restaurant. One of them that I can remember is the Miss Saigon in Egate.

Main Course

Fried Seafood Emperor Noodle (RM12.90)
The noodle looks tempting. However, it is just for the look. The noodle is tasteless. I never think of adding soy sauce and test it out. Maybe with soy sauce, it will be better?

Deep Fried Homemade Bean Curd (RM12.90)
Normal dish. A bit oily but not bad.

Deep Fried Five Spices Calamari (RM13.90)
Another normal dish. Nothing special.

Jindo Pork Ribs (RM14.90)
I like this Pork Ribs. Taste good due to the pepper? Anyway, nice!

Szechuan Aromatic Duck (RM18.90)
Many felt that the meat is a bit dry. It is OK to me. I recommended to put some sauce and wrapped with the egg slices before you put into your mouth.

All in 1 Roasted Meat with Vegetables
This is the so call “Pun Choi”. The taste is weird. But, on other tables, it seems to be great since some of them like it. I would suggest to have the same serving for all diners. If not, some table will not like it (like ME) and some table will like it (Allie and Steven).

The prawn is not fresh and the abalone is too dry. Luckily, the presentation looks nice.

Dim Sum

Steamed Fresh Prawn Dumpling - Har Kau (RM5.50)
It has 3 prawns. Oh…. I love it.

Minced Squid with Crab Claw Meat (RM6.90)
This dim sum is a bit not fresh. Many of us are having the same perception.

Pork Dumpling with Fish Roes - Siew Mai (RM5.50)
Siew Mai in Ko Fu Loft is a bit special to me. From the look, it is exactly the same as what we find in other dim sum restaurant. However, if you bite on it, you will notice that the Siew Mai has prawn and mushroom, on top of the pork. Nice.

Signature Steamed Custard Creamy Bun (RM5.50)
Another nice dim sum. The Custard Creamy Bun is really creamy. I’m loving it.

Deep Fried Pandan Lotus Paste Dumpling (RM4.50)
One word, nice.

Deep Fried Yam Paste with Minced Pork (RM4.50)
From the outside to the inside, it is same from other restaurant. However, another thumbs up dim sum from Ko Fu Loft.

Dessert

Dessert of the Day (RM3.50)
If you were there, you can see Cariso’s expression when she first drink this dessert. In fact, everyone is also having the same expression on the first taste. It tastes weird. Inside the dessert, it contains water chestnut and sago. If you continue eating, it becomes better.

After the food eating session, the chefs post in front of the restaurant and let us take the photos.

Every food blogger is getting one RM5 Voucher, valid till 30th June. Maybe I will use it to get the Signature Steamed Custard Creamy Bun. LOL.

Overall, the dim sum is definitely the best among all dishes that we tried. I like them! For the main course, improvement is needed. This is only applicable to me. Maybe you will like those dishes, since all of us have different taste bud. Furthermore, there are still a lot of dishes in the menu that we never tried. So, if you like Chinese cuisine, you can try it out yourself.

I saw the email from CK 2 days before the review. Luckily, I made it. However, I am late due to the heavy jam and wrong location given by Steven. He told me the restaurant is opposite the Giant. Actually, it is just beside the Giant. Anyway, thanks for the entrance photo by Steven. I don’t have the chance to take it. I am too rush.

When I stepped into the dining hall, the table was already full of dishes: Hokkien Mee, Spring Rolls, Loh Bak, etc… You name it! This is the time when I need to start work: Take photos! I am using my friend’s camera. My camera was broken during the Te Chang You Tiao Wang review. I am not used to it, that is why most of the photos look blur.

We have a total of 11 main dishes plus 5 types of desserts. All dishes come in a very big portion, since we have so many people. However, we are not able to finish all of them!

Loh Bak

Choon Pheah (Spring Roll)

Kiam Chai Ark

Tau Eu Bak

Curry Kapitan Chicken

Curry Tumis Fish

Pork Cincalok

Assam Prawn

Jiu Hoo Char

Hokkien Mee

Or Kuih

After the main dishes, here come the desserts. Total of 6 desserts were being served.

Sago Honeydew

Sago Nangka

Sago Gula Melaka

Cendol

Mango Cendol

Ice Kacang

Overall, the food was OK. For me, I like the Tau Eu Bak and Choon Pneah. Although the Tau Eu Bak is a bit salty, I like it. I just managed to get one piece of Choon Pneah on that day. Not bad. Pork Cincalok is too salty for my taste.

For dessert, I like the Sago Gula Melaka. The Gula Melaka was so sweet. It mixed well with the sago. I like it very much. It will be best if the Gula Melaka is not that sweet. However, the Mango Cendol has a weird taste. Although I like mango, the combination of mango and cendol is too weird. I cannot accept the taste. For those who like to try new stuff, you can try out this Mango Cendol. Who knows, maybe you will like it. Again, this is only my own preference.

The rest of the food are quite normal. Most of the Nyonya restaurant will serve the same dishes as well. If you are a fan of Nyonya food, try to step into the Hot Wok restaurant. You will get all the Nyonya food you want there.

Hot Wok restaurant is also having promotions. Below are the details:

Another invited food review by Criz. This time, we headed to Paya Terubong for the famous Te Chang You Tiao Wang. This is the very first time I went there although I heard and read from others for many times. It is easy to find since you will see a big banner in front of the stall.

Let’s go through the process of making this famous You Tiao. This is the dough.

After taking some from the dough and making it into a long piece, the owner will cut the stripe into pieces.

Stack it up.

Make a line in between.

Time to fry.

The helper needs to keep turning them to make sure all become brownish. Tada… The You Tiao is ready.

Banner that is showing the varieties of the You Tiao together with the price.

Here comes the tempting part. Photos!!!

Sausage + Mayonnaise. RM3.00. Looks nice. It’s normal to me.

Tuna + Mayonnaise. RM2.50. At first, I thought it is Salad You Tiao. But it turn out to be Tuna. I think the salad inside is a bit too much. It should have more tuna. Maybe they can have it only tuna without the salad.

Chicken floss + Mayonnaise. RM2.50. I like this so so much! I like meat floss. No matter with You Tiao or bread, I’m Loving IT!!!

Kaya + Butter. RM2.00. This is just simple and nice. Trust me, very yummy indeed. Love them.

Peanut butter + Butter. RM2.00. Another tempting pieces. Peanut butter + Butter is a bit heaty.

Honey + Butter. RM2.00. This is nice too, although it looks very plain and normal.

Black & While Sesame Twins. 3 pcs for Rm2.00. According to the boss, this is the master of the Hua Chi that we usually have from the Ham Chim Peng stall.

Plain You Tiao. RM1.00. It is very crispy.

Black soya bean. RM1.00. I have 2 glasses.

Boss and helper are busy working on the You Tiao.

I got this last minute invitation from Criz, to have a food review at JL Steamboat, Nagore Place. I reached there around 7pm. Luckily I got my self a parking lot. JL Steamboat is located just beside the Sugar Dynasty Food Delight.

The worker is preparing the food for customers.

All the raw food that you can get it from the counter. There are more than 100 of items for you to choose from, according to the owner.

All the balls…… Meat balls and Fish balls!

Seafood.

Fish noodles and fried yam.

Minced pork, Enokitake Japanese Mushrooms and some fish balls.

Mushrooms.

Like other steamboat restaurant, JL Steamboat also prepared the cooked food for customers to have it while waiting on the steamboat ingredients to be cooked. The fired rice tastes normal while the fried noodle is good.

The nuggets are crispy from the outside. But the filling was a bit too soft until it seems to be not fresh. I like the fried chicken though. I think I have 2 or 3. Nice!

Here comes the most important ingredient for the steamboat, the soup. JL Steamboat has 4 different kind of soups: Fish, Chicken, Tom Yam and Herbs. We have the chance to taste all 4 of them. The first 2 we tried is the chicken and fish. The fish soup was too salty. It becomes more and more salty when the soup is lesser in the pot. The chicken soup is OK, normal.

I tired to taste the tom yam before we put in any ingredients. It tastes spicy and sour. The taste becomes different when you have ingredients inside. It was not that spicy anymore. For the herb, it seems to be not thick enough.

Time to eat. Yipee.

Teppanyaki food. Ham, beef, chicken and squid.

Prawns and Pandan leaf chicken.

Stingray.

Tofu. This is nice! I ate quite a lot.

Kembung Fish. I never tried this. It seems like the fish was not clean thoroughly since the meat which was near to the stomach was

Cannot think of the name of these sticks. The owner made it for our photo taking purpose.

Mixture of the Teppanyaki food.

Another special thing in JL Steamboat, they provide so many sauces.

For the dessert, it was the red bean soup. I assume. None of us trying this. We missed out!!!

Here is the most awaiting dessert, ice cream. There are a total of 5 flavors.

Fruits and Jelly.

Chocolate Fountain! I hope I have one of this in my house! Hahaha.

Yummy Yummy.

Banner and poster on the daily lunch set and price list.

Decoration on the cashier counter. I have no idea why they are using the beer bottle as a decoration. Hmmm……

However, this cat is cute.

Surrounding.

Lighting. I like this photo. The lighting is a bit dark for those who want to take photos on the food, like us. For normal diners, it is perfect.

Oh… I forgot to mention. JL Steamboat is using the switch to control the power of the steamboat. Just press the button will do. By the way, our table is number 6.

A reminder to all, do bring more coins for the parking machine by the road side, if you plan to park your car there. You need to feed the machine from 9am until 12 midnight! Can you imagine this? This is the first time I saw a roadside parking machine charge you until 12 midnight. How ridiculous!

Overall, the food is good, just some improvement is needed. The teppanyaki is great, especially the tofu. Very nice. I like the chocolate fountain and ice cream too. For the ice cream topping, it will be great if there are flaked peanuts and almonds or even raisins.

JL Steamboat is a nice place for you to have gathering with your friends or family while having all the nice food. It is fully equip with air conditioning. for more information, you can visit JL steamboat website at www.jlsteamboat.com.

Before I start, I want to say sorry to all my readers. Although I never update this blog for nearly 2 months, I knew most of you are still coming and checking out my blog regularly. Thank You!

I have the opportunity to go for this food review in Haven Delight because of Mr Criz. Thanks for the invitation. This is the very first time I stepped into Penang Time Square. It is still not fully open, only has a few shops and restaurants. When I reached, Steven, Criz, Gill & Jason and Rebecca were already there. As usual, I started to do the routine job of every food blogger do, take photos!

Entrance

Some decorative stuff inside the restaurant which I feel very nice.

This is very nice! The Chinese wording means, get rich immediately! I wish I can.

Cutlery set. I like the chopstick! It’s not plastic or wood!

After all the food bloggers reached, the food review start. This round, Criz prepared the review note to each and everyone, listed out all the food we are going to try, make our life easier! Let’s start.

Cold Cuts:

The first to serve is the cold cuts: Hotzzz Abalone and Unagi Tofu. Both dishes are in the buffet menu. The buffetlunch and dinner are at RM49.90+ per person (50% off for children). Over 90 dishes from the buffet menu list can be ordered, within a duration of 2 hours from 10.30am to 11pm daily.

Unagi Tofu - Grilled eel with silky tofu in sweet sauce and garnishes. The tofu is really soft and smooth. The eel is just a normal grilled eel that you can have it in the Japanese restaurant. It is a bit hard to eat the tofu together with the eel. In the end, I finished the eel, then only ate on the tofu.

Hotzzz Abalone - Abalone slices with homemade spicy paste and eel sauce. Since the name is Hotzzz Abalone, I thought it will be real hot for the spicy paste, but it is not. The eel sauce is a bit salty.

Main Dishes:

Chicken Ban Ban (RM10) - Fusion Japanese fried chicken with egg in chef’s special mayo sauce. There are 3 sauces: mayo, wasabi and sweet. The sauce is nice when you mix it and eat together with the chicken. To our surprise, the fried egg is very nice too! The boneless chicken is tender and nice to be eaten.

Close up.

Even closer. LOL.

Red Dragon Prawn with Jammy Sauce (RM35) - Fried prawns and white dragon fruit in jammy sauce. The presentation of this dish is superb. The Jammy sauce is almost the same as the sweet and sour sauce. This dish is a bit expensive since it only has 5 prawns. RM35 is a bit over price.

Motoyaki Scallop (RM14) - Grilled scallop with homemade spicy mayo sauce. This dish is inside the buffet menu as well. For those who loved scallop, you can go for their buffet and order this as many as you like. The spicy mayo sauce is really spicy enough. I like it.

Korean Beef Kimchi (RM16) - Fried homemade kimchi with beef slices. This dish has a strong kimchi smell when it was served. However, when you eat it, the taste is not that strong. The beef is soft and tender. Korean Beef Kimchi is a bit sour, mostly due to the kimchi.

Again, close up. For those who doesn’t like close up, just ignore those photos.

It looks spicy right? In fact, it is sour.

Lamb Teriyaki (RM18) - Grilled lamb with herbs in homemade sweet sauce. The grilled lamb is nice, if you manage to get the side part. The center part is a bit dry and not blend well with the sauce. But, I still like it. Nice!

Homemade Spicy Chicken (RM15) - Friend Chicken with homemade spicy sauce. This is one of my favourite. I think I ate the most for this dish. It is very spicy. That is why I like it so much. The boneless chicken used is the same as the one in Chicken Ban Ban.

Must order this dish again in future!

Shanghai Honey Spare Ribs (RM18) - Fried spare ribs with honey sauce. The spare ribs is too salty! In deed, very very salty. Some of us just tried a bit and cannot continue having it. Jason purposely asked for a bowl of rice to eat with it. According to him, it is very nice to haveit with rice, will not feel so salty if compare by eating the pork ribs alone.

Tempura Cheese Maki (RM18). I also like this dish. It was fried on the outer layer and covered with cheese. Delicious!

Chicken Bom. One of the new dishes which is not in the menu. Many of us feel that the taste is weird. The outer layer is the chicken. Inside, it is grilled salmon. The taste is not blend well.

Can you see the grilled salmon? At first, we thought it was tuna.

Wanton Noodle (RM22). It is just a normal wanton noodle. However, as you can see, the wanton is HUGE and NICE. There are a lot of pranws inside while you bite. However, RM22 is a bit pricey for just a normal wanton noodle. Nothing is really special about this.

Japanese Yaki Udon (RM12) - Fried Japanese rice noodles with bonito flakes. This dish is a bit normal, same as the wanton noodle. The bonito flakes are moving while it is served.

Homemade Desserts:

After the main dish, here comes the most awaiting dessert: Ice Cream!

Macha Ice Cream (RM8) - Green tea ice cream ith red bean paste. The green tea ice cream has a strong green tea taste, according to some of the food bloggers. To me, this ice cream is a bit too plain, not sweet enough. The glutinuos rice is a bit hard, not really like it. The red bean paste is just nice. Overall, not bad. Try it if you are a green tea ice cream fan.

Kuru Goma Ice Cream (RM8) - Black sesame seed ice cream with crushed peanuts. I like this ice cream so much! Very nice! If compare to Macha Ice Cream, I feel that Kuru Goma Ice Cream is more like an ice cream. LOL. Thumbs Up!!!

The Chef, Mr Edwin Teo.

If you see the title of this post, maybe you will have no idea on how the biscuit will look like. I have the same thought too, when I first heard it from my friend. My friend went to Ipoh last weekend and asked me whether I want the famous Kaya Puff. I rejected since I have the Kaya Puff before and I think they were too sweet. My friend was suggesting another biscuit to me, which is Lotus Meat Floss Biscuit.

The Lotus Meat Floss Biscuit is exactly looks like the Tau Sar Pneah from the outside. Besides, the box never mention what biscuit is that. If someone just took it, they will think it was the Tau Sar Pneah.

Lotus Meat Floss Biscuit was just great. Oh, I just like the meat floss. Yummy. The meat floss was a lot inside the biscuit. For the lotus, at first I scared it will be too sweet. After I ate it, it was fine to me. Maybe the meat floss is too much and cover all the lotus taste. However, you still can taste the lotus. Lotus is at the bottom part while meat floss is on top.

One box of Lotus Meat Floss Biscuit has 12 pieces. It costs around RM12.80-RM13.80. My friend bought it to treat me, but forgot about the price. If you go to Ipoh in future, try to look for this shop Ching Han Guan, which is near to the Foh San Dim Sum. The address and phone number are as below:

If you like meat floss, you must try the Lotus Meat Floss Biscuit from Ching Han Guan.

I went to try out the KFC Zinger Tower on the day I heard the advertisement from My FM. I was on my way to work. From My FM, it stated that you can have discount if you got the discount coupon from the website. I never listen properly on the website. When I reached office, I search for it from KFC website. To my disappointment, I cannot find any coupon after searching high and low. Since I wanted to try it out so much, I just went to have it without any discount coupon.

Prepare to be Recharged! Introducing KFC Zinger Tower. A burger with a boost, bound to please. This is the tag line you can see from the promo card.

KFC Zinger Tower consists of soft bun, zesty chili lime sauce, fresh lettuce, zinger fillet, cheese and hash brown.

The Zinger Tower is not bad after all. The lime sauce made the burger become nicer. The Zinger fillet was tasty as before. The hash brown is a bit crispy, due to over fried. However, the zinger fillet and hash brown were too oily. I think they were prepared on the spot and never drained the oil before serve. You can see the oil on the fillet and hash brown. By the way, I was there during night time. I am not sure if I was there in the day time, will it be the same?

If you are a KFC fan, you can try out KFC Zinger Tower. It will be my another choice after Zinger burger. Oh, before I forgot, the website for the discount coupon is at My FM website. Currently, the KFC Zinger Tower discount is no longer available. It is replaced by KFC Rise ‘n Shine Offer.

I am honored to be invited again by the food blogger for the food review. This time, Lingzie is the one who organizing it. Thanks to her! I almost missed this food review session if not Mr. Criz told me about it. Thanks to him too!

When I reached there together with Steven and Criz, most of the food bloggers already arrived. We started to take photos on the restaurant and its interior environment before the food review starts.

Exterior and interior environment. The restaurant has a second floor. The ambiance of the restaurant is quiet and nice, best for couples or lovers to dine there!

Can you guess what is the main purpose for me to post the below photo? I am not going to promote the air conditioning or the clock, I want to show you the restaurant is WiFi enable. Yes, you can blog there live, if you have a laptop with you.

After Huat Koay from Penang Tua Pui arrived, the food review starts. We were served the salad first.

Classic Caesar Salad (RM18). It is a combination of crispy romance lettuce with chef’s Caesar dressing garnished with anchovies fillet, grated Parmesan cheese, herbs croutons and bacon bits. Smoked Salmon is inside the Caesar salad too! I love this salad a lot due to the appetising dressing and smoked salmon.

Our House Rules Organic Salad (RM15). The dressing taste was a bit sour. I still prefer the Caesar Salad.

Scallop Salad (RM20) comes with Organic Fresh Garden Green and Seared Sea Scallop, accompanied with delicious Apple Salsa.

After the Salad, 5 soups were served: Italianese Wild Mushroom Soup (RM10), Fresh Pumpkin Soup (RM9), Cream of Broccoli (RM9), Cream of Cauliflower (RM9) and Cream of Tomato (RM9).

Main Courses are next.

Chinese New Year is just 2 days away. Since the beginning of the month, we already can see the Chinese New Year Biscuit on sales. Everyone is busy doing the spring cleaning, baking the biscuit and shopping. Every year, I will bake the butter cookies and give them to my friends. This year will be a rush for me because I only have one day to do it, which is last Monday. Before start baking, I went to Tesco Hypermarket to get all the stuffs needed. Once done, the baking session begins.

It is very easy to bake the butter cookies. The ingredients you need are:

12 Oz Self Raising Flour
6 Oz Icing Sugar
6 Oz Butter
1 Egg

This is the cookies press. I called it cookies gun. It looks like a gun, right?

First, let the butter soften and put into the mixer.

Add in the icing sugar.

Beat for some time.

Add in the egg and continue beating.

Beat until it becomes smooth.

Start to add in the flour slowly and beat until it becomes a dough form.

Get some of the dough and put into the cookies press.

Select the shape that you want.
