This is what I have always preached to my staff.

Ten years ago, I have even the opportunity to head the MIS (Management Information System) Team of the company when its manager resigned. This department plays a crucial role in the maintenance and implementation of QMS (Quality Management Systems) aligned to ISO (International Standard Organization). I discovered in that short stint that its staff is lagging behind in terms of IT competencies. In addition, to my surprise, even our Systems Administrator does not have the right training. No wonder we still have to rely on our equipment suppliers and consultants for network maintenance and troubleshooting. The company is spending unnecessarily in the process.

I immediately asked the HRD (Human Resource Department) to administer knowledge and competency assessment for the MIS staff. True enough; the results of the assessment validate what I gathered from casual conversation with them. I recommended to our CEO a budget and a timetable for Cisco Certification Training Program for MIS people.

The results of the certification program were very evident. One month after the training, we terminated the services of outside IT Consultants. More so, our MIS people were able to conceptualized and implemented productivity programs to maximize our organization’s use of our IT infrastructure. Morale was high too. Lastly, the results of the training paved a way for management to look at and invest on relevant training for various key positions in the organization.

Visit also these COOL BLOGS:

We are all expecting that life would be a lot easier with all the gadgets and ‘luxurious’ technology we can buy, more often we cannot afford - we are dead wrong. Have you not noticed life became more complicated and difficult?

I can recall how simple and comfortable life before without the prompting of my PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) for my next task or appointment; when I can take a brisk walk to the nearest fast-food or grocery; when I can go for a week without a telephone ringing; when I pound the keys of my rusty typewriter, I know I am writing sensibly; when I have to worry only of paying my electric and water bills only. Yeah, I missed those days, compared to what ‘living’ has become now.

What is the big difference?

My paycheck is no longer enough to even make both ends meet. Broadband connection, Mobile Phone and Cable TV subscriptions, Car amortization and maintenance, Credit Card Bills, and more obligations that I could not even recall taking into serious account are vying for a portion of my paycheck. Is there respite in any of these? Now, the inflation rate is soaring at 12% plus and gasoline at $5 a gallon, (arggh!!!) even doubling the value of my paycheck will not suffice.

A quick analysis reveals that there a lot of things that I perceived to be necessary are not, actually. Some are simply lifestyle’s aesthetics that do not add value, but greatly devalues my paycheck. Taking out these unnecessary costs or things that I can live without can improve my finances. I realized that the value of my paycheck is actually the value of the lifestyle I chose to live with. In effect, a salary increase and an additional income source will not necessarily improve the value of my paycheck, but instead a redefining of the lifestyle that I ‘need’ to live and is expedient at the moment.

Visit also these COOL BLOGS:

It made it united in essence, and in letters. Although, for some the fight for independence and or freedom is yet to be realized many years later.

To me, freedom or independence is not something that you only fight for but live for. Because, in spite of oppressions, tyrannies of dictatorships, prison, persecution or even poverty, anyone can be free if one starts thinking and believing that nothing can bind his will and spirit. We are freer as long as we think and believe we are.

Happy 4th of July everyone! Cheers!

Visit also these COOL BLOGS:

The US recession has spread beyond its borders and plagued not only those with stable economy, worst those with fledgling economy as well. What do we read on the headlines?

“Oil prices neared $146 a barrel Thursday for the first time ever on reports of declining U.S. stockpiles and the threat of conflict with Iran…Expectations that the European Central Bank will raise interest rates later Thursday could further weaken the U.S. dollar and drive oil prices even higher, as investors turn to commodities as a hedge against a falling greenback, traders said.” ~MSNBC News
This is the worst so far in world economic history.

"Today we witness a very great change for hydrocarbons," said Alexei Miller, head of Russian oil and gas giant Gazprom, last week. "The (oil price is already) very high, and we think it will reach $250 a barrel."
Darn! That’s scary. Is this our dreaded “Economic Armageddon?”

Gwynne Dyer proffered two possible solutions to this economic dilemma: One is bio-fuel alternative and Two, “transform carbon dioxide from the problem into part of the solution by combining it with hydrogen to make a synthetic octane fuel.”

The first solution seems a feasible solution, although it would take several decades and considerable amount of resources before the majority of the consumers can benefit there from. The latter, I agree with Dyer, is very radical however offers some promises. Why not? Who would believe that an atom can be split until we (the US) dropped 2 atomic bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan which led to the culmination of WW2? IMO, it’s high time for our scientists to focus their efforts on this and the world's governments pour their resources to this endeavor before we see a real “Economic Armageddon.”

Visit also these COOL BLOGS:

Anyhow, allow me to remind us all why we really need a reliable auto-insurance.

Accidents do happen. I have been driving since I was 18 and believe no matter how careful and “expert” you are as a driver –accidents do happen. Auto insurance is your only safeguard for your own damages and third party liabilities. Other than it is required by the state, an auto insurance can help you cover any costs you will incur when an accident occur.

Quick claims. A reliable auto insurance company attends to your needs when you need it. It is not a broker that goes only after your premium, disappears for a year, and then reappears again for your yearly renewal. Reliable auto insurance sees to it that everything is in order. It sees to it that when an accident takes place, they come to you instead of you hunting them down for your claims.

Competitive premium with competitive benefits. Reliable auto insurance does not charge more than what they can offer. You instead get value for an investment you make. Although, none of us do not want to get involve in any accident so to make a claim, reliable auto insurance serves as a guarantee that when the inevitable happens, you will be properly covered.

Visit also these COOL BLOGS:

A sort of a slum book entry, huh. Anyway, just allow me to deviate a little here. My laptop, PDA, mobile phone, and apple ipod are simply indispensable. I cannot leave home without them in tow.

The three are indispensable to my business. The ipod is more for pleasure. Recently, I celebrated my birthday, and guess what I got for myself? Yeah, a new Sony mp3 player. Gosh! I fell in love with it immediately. Okey, forgive me there. I could not simply contain my excitement. I really thought that I would never let go of that ipod. I was wrong!

Sony still rocks in terms of sound technology. Acoustic music in my new mp3 player sounds so live . Dunno if I’d ever watch a dvd concert again. With this, as if you are transported into the middle of the concert itself and cheering with the crowd. Simply, superb! No doubt, this is by far one of the best mp3 players there is. Kudos Sony!

Visit also these COOL BLOGS:

The problem is that when you get the experience, you're too damned old to do anything about it. (Jimmy Connors)

I agree in part with Connors there. In the corporate context, work or professionals experience is indeed gained through time. But somehow when you have finally had those experiences desirable for an upward movement in your organization, you are already candidate for an early retirement.

On another note, some professional recruiters or organizations value work or organizational experience over and above the advanced education or training of potential employees, they however shun age when it reaches a set bracket. So where does a career professional put himself? Forget education and pursue professional experience or devote time and money first on education before anything else?

I proffer both.

The best thing about this information age is that the opportunity to pursue higher and/or continuing education without taking a leave of absence from your work or even doing in the comfort of your home or private study. University of Phoenix, for example, offers this kind of opportunity wherever you are in the U.S. or even outside. In fact here’s what they offer:

“With convenient class locations as well as online learning, University of Phoenix makes quality higher education highly accessible. Whether you’re seeking an associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree, we can help you reach your goal while you work—and much sooner than you might expect.”

Continuing and higher education knows no age if one has the ardent desire to learn, and enhance his skills and knowledge. A young professional who seeks upward movement in the corporate ladder should start investing on his continuing education while he’s young and working. An advanced degree has always all the advantages.

More so, money and time should never posed an excuse should one really aims for a successful career.

Visit also these COOL BLOGS:

And so we must straighten our backs and work for our freedom. A man can't ride you unless your back is bent.

Are you familiar with that quote? That’s one of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s profound words. “I have a dream…,” another so ordinary and so familiar but King did not only uttered it simply to impress his audience but to challenge a nation to change their views and attitudes about racism, apartheid, and the real essence of equality. That dream turned into reality which he paid for his dear life. And now, as the US presidential election draws near, should Obama wins, then King’s death is somehow vindicated again in another way, and in a different magnitude.

Okey, so much for the lengthy intro, this is another acoustic Friday.

Change the World is an OST of the smash movie, Phenomenon, of 1996 starred by John Travolta and Robert Duval. It is a movie about an ordinary man (Travolta) who sees a bright light descend from the sky, and discovers he now has super-intelligence and telekinesis. This is actually one of my fave movies of all time. When you are looking for an inspiration, here’s one worth the watch.

Here’s the live version of the movie’s OST by Eric Clapton –enjoy:

If I could reach the stars I'd pull one down for you
Shine it on my heart so you could see the truth
That this love I have inside is everything it seems
But for now I find it's only in my dreams

That I can change the world
I would be the sunlight in your universe
You will think my love was really something good
Baby if I could change the world

If I could be king even for a day
I'd take you as my queen I'd have it no other way
And our love will rule in this kingdom we have made
Till then I'd be a fool wishin' for the day

That I can change the world
I would be the sunlight in your universe
You will think my love was really something good
Baby if I could change the world
Baby if I could change the world

Visit also these COOL BLOGS:

Worried? Watch for these signs:

1. Your workload is reduced.
2. You start receiving memos about the company's "new direction."
3. Your company introduces technology that replaces humans.
4. Your company starts to close branches in the name of "consolidation."
5. Your company is sold to, or merges with, another company.
6. Your industry in general is starting to outsource.
7. Your industry is in the news and words like "cutbacks" and "downturn" are used.
8. Your company's stock is dropping in value.
9. Your boss asks if you'd consider a pay or benefit decrease.
10. You're overlooked when it comes to deciding who gets to go to seminars or other training.
27. Your subordinates are being given some of your job responsibilities.
28. You haven't received a raise in a very long time.
29. You've been asked to take some time off.
30. You've seen a job posting that sounds an awful lot like your job.

If you're experiencing three of these, take care. Be proactive. Talk with your boss. Ask how you can do better. Spiff up your networking and contacts. Start putting out feelers for other jobs.

__________

This is a guest post by Karen Burns of Working Girl, courtesy of the Recruiting Blogswap, a content exchange service sponsored by CollegeRecruiter.com, a leading site for college students looking for internships and recent graduates searching for entry level jobs and other career opportunities.

Visit also these COOL BLOGS:

Full week of work, work, and work, surely like me, you always find Fridays as sort of relief. How do you spend your after office or work hours Fridays? Me, I don’t normally go out with friends as I used to, instead I drive home fast, grab a pack of beer on a convenience store along, and pick one of my favorites acoustic concert dvd in a nearby video store. After a good dinner, I enjoy another acoustic Friday with my son.

Here’s one of my faves from The EXTREME: More than words (video and lyrics). Btw, I am adding ‘Acoustic Friday’ as one of my regular categories here.

Saying I love you
Is not the words I want to hear from you
It's not that I want you
Not to say, but if you only knew
How easy it would be to show me how you feel
More than words is all you have to do to make it real
Then you wouldn't have to say that you love me
Cos I'd already know
What would you do if my heart was torn in two
More than words to show you feel
That your love for me is real
What would you say if I took those words away
Then you couldn't make things new
Just by saying I love you
More than words
Now I've tried to talk to you and make you understand
All you have to do is close your eyes
And just reach out your hands and touch me
Hold me close don't ever let me go
More than words is all I ever needed you to show
Then you wouldn't have to say that you love me
Cos I'd already know
What would you do if my heart was torn in two
More than words to show you feel
That your love for me is real
What would you say if I took those words away
Then you couldn't make things new
Just by saying I love you
More than words

Have a great weekend everyone!

Visit also these COOL BLOGS:

One of my exhilarating experiences was visiting Barcelona and watching the Summer Olympics in 1992, wandering inside the coliseum in Rome, paying homage at the Vatican City, among others. Who would forget my comfortable stays in one of those fine Barcelona Hotels and Rome Hotels? Simply splendid! From my checking-in until I checked-out to move to another city.

This early, I am already eyeing another two-week vacation in Europe, and this time Sweden it is. I heard a lot of great places to explore there, and I can’t wait. In fact, I already asked my assistant to book me on one of Stockholm Hotels. Hopping, I’d be able to complete all my projects and commitments then Sweden here I come!

Visit also these COOL BLOGS:

The merchant returned to the sultan a sack of paper slips on each of which was written, “This is a camel!” (Osbert Burdett)
In an unstable economy and soaring inflation rates, how I wish I could trade anything in exchange of money or important goods essential for day-to-day living. Ahh, wishful thinking! Allow me; I need it once in a while. Like that merchant, we need something more practical, more essential in exchange for what we can offer.

This reminds about getting a personal or business loan. While, I am not a strong endorsers of loans as means to meet your personal or business financial needs, in a recession it could just be one of the feasible and practical options available. However, prudence must be exercised when taking this option. Some could take advantage of your needs, charge you with high interest rates, bind you with unreasonable payment terms. Get help or guidance from finance professionals before making a decision. Do a quick research, and make comparisons before you take the first offer. Because getting personal loans in haste could probably remedy your financial problems today, but may give you financial woes tomorrow.

Visit also these COOL BLOGS:

McCain and the Republicans are already warier about this development. They were ready to race with Clinton, I suppose, not with another protégé of Martin Luther King JR., IMHO. This seems to be a rather big political blow on them. In fact, even as the finality of the nomination is yet to be announced as of this writing, McCain seemed to have started a campaign against Obama in his speech in New Orleans last Tuesday night:

“I have a few years on my opponent, so I am surprised that a young man has bought in to so many failed ideas,” McCain said. “Like others before him, he seems to think government is the answer to every problem.”

Have your say please.

Visit also these COOL BLOGS:

The problem is, you just don't see them. (Jay Abraham)
Between a 9 to5 job and small business management, I prefer the latter. Although I must admit that it is the harder path and frustrations and failures are high, including mortality rates –yeah, I mean that literally. The pressure in managing your own business is extreme compared to managing others. In addition, one of those strains comes from financial issues.

How do you keep your business stay afloat during a recession?

My approach is simplistic, increase your sales and profits, and lower your costs. However, when you are in a crunch- get business loans or personal loans (for small businesses) with flexible payment terms and low interest rates to bail you out. Loans from refutable companies are easily obtainable for a thriving small business.

Recession is temporary. Keep your head up high and weather it. Don’t worry, even giants like Microsoft faces the same financial challenges you are facing. Hear Bill Gates:

I'm quite worried about the fiscal imbalances that we've got and what that might mean in terms of financial crisis ahead.
See? Not only was he brazen enough to think he could walk away with a nation’s treasures, he thought he could sell them on E-Bay without anyone knowing.

As internship season for college students kick into high gear, it’s a good time to reflect on how to avoid the negative internship behaviors that could get college students into trouble.

Don’t get too personal or think you are one of the guys. You’re not. You are still in test mode and the relationship can still be terminated mid internship.

College interns need to understand that as much as the company wants them to feel comfortable they are not yet, officially a part of the team. College interns should be very cautious about getting into conversations that are too personal and avoid becoming a knot in the office grapevine or become a part of the rumor mill. Interns should keep all interactions professional.

Try the following to exit a conversation that you think is heading in the wrong direction:“I need to get a packet over to xyz department by…”“I want to put some more time in on the xyz project today, nice talking with you”“I wanted to speak with xyz before lunch”

Don’t answer your cell phone every single time it rings. We get it - You’re important.

Some companies have guidelines that attempt to curb the use of personal cell phones or even the appearance of cell phones in the work place. Today's college interns stay very connected and the tendency is great to answer a ringing cell phone at anytime or any place. One recent college student intern with whom I worked would continually ask me to hold my thoughts while she answered her calls. This continued even after repeatedly being told that her personal cell phone needed to be off or on vibrate during work time.

Don’t drink like you are at a keg party in a frat house or on spring break. You’re not!

Many organizations plan team building activities for their group of college interns. These intern trips could run anywhere from a trip to the ballpark, a museum or a concert hall. Many such outings will include the opportunity for interns to have meals and drinks with employers or other staff. Over indulging with the alcohol is a definite no-no. In fact, interns should be very aware that these social events are just another opportunity for hiring managers to observe the interns' behavior in a group and make note of their level of social savvy.

Don’t refuse assignments you perceive to be beneath you.

One of my first interactions with a college intern several years ago was with a Graphic Design student. When the Art Director asked the intern to clean up a work area, the intern responded, ‘I’m an artist and I don’t file. Someone else can do that”. Needless to say he was relieved of his internship by the end of the week.

No one who understands the value of the internship to the student and the organization wants to abuse the intern’s energy and time. However, refusing to do certain work that you might consider menial is not acceptable. A better approach might be to do the assignment when asked and check in with your college career center for advice, if you think you are being abused. Also observe if the behavior you think is beneath you is part of the office protocols for others.

Don’t correct your boss in public, and think seriously about doing it in private also.

One very bright college junior with whom I worked, received a prestigious internship with a major pharmaceutical firm. The intern had an extremely difficult and uncomfortable time after pointing out a supervisor's error on a spreadsheet while in a meeting with senior managers. Although the intern was lauded publicly for catching the error before the client did, the rest of six month assignment was unbearable.

Don’t get involved with an office romance. This is not the time or the place.

In Vault's 2003 Office Romance Survey, over 1,000 professionals at companies nationwide were asked to say under which circumstances an office romance would be unacceptable. Eleven percent said that an office romance with an intern would not be appropriate. We all probably still have vivid memories of a very public office romance in Washington DC between an intern, a very senior official and a little blue dress. It is so much better to be remembered for your contributions rather than to be the talk of the office.

Fortunately for most college students, an internship can produce real value for organizations and great career opportunities. In the case of McTague, who has helped officials recover most of the missing items and plans to plead guilty; his internships led to jail time.

----------------------
Guest post by: Marcia Robinson of BullsEyeResumes College Blog. My unwillingness to go for a loan seems to hamper this as some of my friends would think –but I don’t. I am saving for it. In due time, my son and I will move into with no worries of paying a dime in loans, except for the yearly real estate tax of course. Now, why am I blogging about this?

A lady friend asked me once: what could be the most important detail of your house you would pour more attention to? With so much of thinking, I immediately responded: the floor. “Why?” She queried. Well, I guess, having a very vibrant 2-year-old boy would require that I should have a good one on my house. Besides, other activities (^^) are pleasant doing on the floor.

Speaking of good flooring, hardwood flooring is my first preference. Maybe expensive over other alternatives, it is by far the best choice in terms of class, design, and homeliness. Besides, my hyperactive son can crash anytime he want and can only suffer little, if none at all, bruises. Especially when you have, your living room and bedrooms covered with quality Empire Carpet.

Empire Today, a leading provider of installed Home Furnishings and Home Improvements for more than 45 years would be my preferred provider and installer of my home floorings. With over one million satisfied customers, they have already proven themselves in the field, and surely, they are reliable. So, why settle for less. As a matter of fact, their ever expanding line of quality hone products it is easier and faster for me to remodel my existing home and probably increase its commercial value. A for my dream house, they would be my most convenient choice too. In a gist, here are some of the products and services they offer:

• Carpet
• Hardwood Flooring
• Laminate Flooring
• Ceramic Flooring
• Window Treatments
• Bath & Shower Liners

Again, why settle for less. Here is a specialist that offers only the best customer care you expect, even beyond.

Not only for me, but probably for most of us, our homes’ flooring are one of the best investments we can do. I can see you nodding there in agreement. Yeah. While others are investing on the facade, which I am not saying is not important, it is but more important to pay more attention on your floorings.

Visit also these COOL BLOGS:

However, I cannot simply go deaf or blind at what is happening around me.

I came home from the US believing that the economy is vibrant and is now conducive for investments and new business, but now the daily news prove the contrary. Where is our economy headed? Oh, yeah. I remember the 2006 SONA (State of the Nation Address by the President) clearly:

In summary, I named only a few priorities to illustrate that on many fronts, your government is working, and working well. Our economy is now growing over the longest period in the last quarter-century: 22 consecutive quarters of growth. Umakyat ng mahigit tatlumpung porsyento (30% increase in income?) ang kita ng pinakamahihirap na pamilya sa unang tatlong taon ng ating panunungkulan, at bumaba ang dami ng maralita (decrease in the number of poor families? Hello? Look around you please.) sa 25% ng mga pamilya, mula 28%, katumbas ng dalawang milyong katao na lumaya sa kahirapan (hello again? juan dela Cruz can't afford the pandesal anymore!). According to Thornton and Punongbayan, 70% of medium-sized business owners are optimistic, the fifth most optimistic (I think that what really remained –our people’s optimism huh) among 30 countries, just behind India, Ireland, South Africa and China. (note: italics mine)

Sannamagan! Where are those figures coming from? The government is sinking in debt than any other period in its existence, in fact to exaggerate, worst than the Martial Law days. Have a look at the data released by the National census recently:

The 11.4 percent acceleration in the annual adjustments in the prices of the heavily weighted food, beverages and tobacco (FBT) items raised the year-on-year headline inflation rate in the Philippines to 8.3 percent in April from 6.4 percent in March. This was the highest inflation rate since May 2005 (8.5%). All the other commodity groups recorded higher inflation rates during the month. Inflation a year ago was 2.3 percent.

How do you reconcile the figures? The transport group is clamoring for a fare increase, while the workers are clamoring for another wage hike, and then MERALCO is overbilling us? Where is our economy headed?

Although the US recession is taking its toll, it seems that it is more feasible to fight my way to make a living in the US than here. Oh, c’mon. Lay down your patriotism crap. What matters to Juan dela Cruz is filling his and his family’s bellies three times a day. Think that. Or, think what? Where is our economy headed?

Visit also these COOL BLOGS:

Obvious indication of which is the devaluation of real estates properties, diminishing GDP compared to 2006 performance, surge in the unemployment rates, and the continued rise of petrol prices.

My worry then is that if Bush will not take a decisive act to aver the impending economic catastrophe, and shift his right foot's weight from Anti-Terrorist War into an Anti-Recession War, the recession will take the world flatfooted. But he acted too late. We cannot blame the Clintons if they are campaigning with a banner highlighting the Clinton Economic Legacy; for by comparison Bush seems to be an epic failure in that arena.

My other worry is that, my home country's government while riddled with controversies and scandals, is still boasting of a stable economy and prided itself that it is more prepared to face the US recession than its ASEAN counterparts. Sannnamagan! They could not even assure the steady supply of rice! Or, as I said in my previous post, they were simply hiding or evading the real issues.

While checking my dollar account with UnionBank, here's what I read instead on their website:

The peso continued to weaken against the greenback after the BSP opted to maintain rates yesterday and receding expectation of another Federal Reserve interest rate cut next week. The local unit finally broke the Php42-figure resistance as it established a new YTD low (peso) at Php42.100. It opened at the day's high (peso) at Php41.980 and closed at Php42.040. Volume of dollars traded went up to $937.70mn compared from the previous volume of $324.50mn.
Goodness! Is this what the government calls a vibrant economy? Poor Juan delaCruz. He is clamoring now for another wage hike thinking that this would alleviate his suffering. Ahh! When will we learn?

I should be happy with the devaluation of the peso, right? Why? Because I get more for my hard earned dollars. Frankly, am not!

Petrol prices are seen to increase by 0.50 php this weekend. I am opting to take the jeepney for my client calls.

Visit also these COOL BLOGS:
