<p>In today’s fast-paced society we’re bombarded by a thousand different things at once. As such, it&#8217;s often difficult to get anything done. And the same goes for your workouts.</p>
<p>I’ll explain what I mean in just a second but let me first clarify why focus – not multi-tasking – needs to be your modus operandi if you want to reach your fitness goals.</p>
<p>For some reason, we’ve been told that multi-tasking is good and that if we can juggle several “plates” at once, then we’ll get more done. But the reality is that mulit-tasking can take a toll on your brain &#8211; and your results.</p>
<p>In a study of 14 participants who underwent fMRI, researchers at Vanderbilt University found that when people try to juggle two tasks at once, a bottleneck occurs in information processing. The posterior lateral prefrontal cortex, a part of the brain that is involved in decision making, delayed one task until the other was complete.</p>
<p>Another study, by researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, involved 14 participants (mean age 26) who were asked to learn a task under two conditions. They learned one task without any distractions. Then they learned another task while listening to, and trying to count, a series of beeps. Not surprisingly, their ability to recall how to do the task later on was much better when they learned it without distraction.</p>
<p>Preliminary research also suggests that maintaining focus, on the other hand, might help build brain tissue. Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital conducted MRI studies of people who regularly practice meditation, and found that compared with controls, they had more gray matter (brain cells) in areas associated with attention and sensory processing.</p>
<h3>Okay, so what does all this have to do with you achieving your health and fitness goals?</h3>
<p>Well, everything really!</p>
<p>Let me give you an example of a typical person working out in the gym. They show up with no plan. Wander around trying to improvise their workout as they go. Become distracted by talking to other people, reading a magazine, or watching TV – remember we’re still in the gym here.</p>
<p>The result – a sub-par workout. And if this continues&#8230;.sub-par results!</p>
<p>You see, when most people go workout they don’t have a specific workout that they’re going to follow. So they do a little bit of everything. Their workout is not focused – it is scattered.</p>
<p>As a result, they don’t achieve much other than being able to brag to their friends that they “went to the gym”.</p>
<p>I don’t know about you…</p>
<p>But for me, results speak louder than words any day of the week.</p>
<p>And, in order to get results, you need to be focused – not only on your ultimate goal – but also on the process that will take you there.</p>
<p>Focus is one of the qualities that will help you achieve tremendous health and fitness success.</p>
<p>In fact, it’s one of the greatest qualities of the <a href="http://www.fitterthanthepros.com">world’s top fitness pros</a>.</p>

<p>2. Review your goals before working out.</p>
<p>3. Write down your workout plan before you even begin to workout.</p>
<p>4. Visualize yourself going through your workout successfully.</p>
<p>5. Stay in the moment. Don’t allow your mind to drift about what you need to do after your workouts. Just enjoy the process.</p>

<p>I know I do. In fact, my brother was the bigger concern for my parents. I seemed to just do my own thing.</p>
<p>But the reason that our parents made sure we weren&#8217;t getting into trouble by hanging around the wrong crowd is because deep down they knew that environment shapes us!</p>
<p>We become who we spend our time with.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m going to take that one step further by saying that you also become who influences you.</p>
<p>That means listening to trashy radio, watching the news (all the time), and reading newspapers and magazines (which pretty much all have negative foci) shape you and your subconscious mind.</p>
<p>Conversely, listening to empowering audios, reading uplifting information (like this blog), and watching videos/shows/presentations/movies that build you up can be amazing!</p>
<p>In fact, I&#8217;d say 50% of my peer group consists of audios and books from mentors I&#8217;ve never even met. I probably spend more time with them than I do most of my friends. And I love it that way!</p>
<p>As I mentioned up top, I&#8217;ve never been one to have a large group of friends. Instead, I have always had a tight group of close friends. I&#8217;ve never been into gossiping or wasting time sitting around talking about girls with a bunch of guys who have nothing better to do with their time.</p>
<p>Back in the day&#8230;when I spent most of my days in the gym (training clients up to 14 hours a day) I would purposely remove myself from my fellow trainers because I DID NOT WANT TO BE LIKE THEM!</p>
<p>I knew that wasting my time with was NOT going to help me get to where I wanted to go.</p>
<p>I knew (and still know) that humans are very impressionable. Think about how babies learn &#8211; by modelling their parents and other influences!</p>
<p>But not much changes as we age.</p>
<p>In order to fit in and be accepted by our peers, we &#8220;sacrifice&#8221; our uniqueness and give less importance to what makes us US. We simply want to be part of the group.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s only as we mature and become more conscious of who we really are and what we have to offer this world that we allow our true potential to really shine through.</p>
<p>But let&#8217;s get a little more specific&#8230;</p>
<h3>If Your Peer Group is Fat You Probably Are Too!</h3>
<p>I&#8217;m not kidding!</p>
<p>This has actually been shown scientifically. I recall learning of a recent study that showed that even having a friend (who is not overweight) who has a friend who IS overweight (ie. 2 degrees of separation) increases your chances of being fat by 20%!</p>
<p>And this is a 3rd party friend you don&#8217;t even know!!!</p>
<p>The power of proximity, or your peer group, or your environment &#8211; whatever you want to call it &#8211; is one of the greatest influences on all areas of your life.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s one of the reasons I&#8217;m so grateful for this blog (and for my company) &#8211; it&#8217;s given US a platform to provide a positive, empowering, and healthy environment for everyone to benefit from. That&#8217;s one of the reasons that I also require that you participate in the comment section.</p>
<p>You play a big role in your health AND that of your &#8220;virtual friends&#8221;.</p>

<p>Talk about success!</p>
<p>So after listening to the interview, I thought it was time to put together this post and share yet another &#8220;success&#8221; video with you.</p>
<p>As you can tell, the theme this week has been on mindset, success, and achieving your goals.</p>
<p>The neat part about this stuff is that it doesn&#8217;t matter what your goals are &#8211; everyone can benefit from the &#8220;fundamentals&#8221;. And since I&#8217;m a big believer that what goes on &#8220;inside&#8221; eventually happens &#8220;outside&#8221;, it&#8217;s important to spend the time to develop who you are as a person.</p>
<p>The more you learn about yourself and develop yourself, the easier it will be to reach and maintain your health and fitness goals.</p>
<p>If you don&#8217;t believe me just have a look at the <a href="http://www.yurielkaim.com/317/how-to-set-powerful-goals/#comments">hundreds of comments</a> on the previous blog posts this week where many of you have talked about lacking <a href="http://www.yurielkaim.com/327/the-secret-to-motivation/#comments">motivation</a>, feeling frustrated, not having time, and many other challenges that have stood in your way of your success.</p>
<p>Now, I completely understand that life can get crazy, making it tough to follow through on what you start.</p>
<p>But I&#8217;m also here &#8211; as your coach &#8211; to tell you that that&#8217;s not good enough (at least in most cases)!</p>
<p>I believe that with proper planning, support, and the right tools you can accomplish anything &#8211; NO MATTER WHAT!</p>
<p>But you need to start by developing a success mindset. And, in today&#8217;s video I show you how to start doing just that.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll also reveal many things that separate the most successful people in the world from everyone else.</p>

<p>Today, we&#8217;re going to build on what we talked about with more focus on motivation.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;ve had moments in your life when you were totally motivated and pumped up, right?</p>
<p>And I&#8217;m certain that you&#8217;ve also had moments when you were not so motivated.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ve all been there. We&#8217;ve all had a great days and other days that we&#8217;d rather forget.</p>
<p>But what is the key to getting and staying motivated for as long as possible?</p>
<p>This is important question to consider since consistency plays a big role in whether or not you reach your health and fitness goals.</p>
<p>I mean, what&#8217;s the point of working out 5 days in a row, then not doing anything for a week, and then starting all over again? That&#8217;s a great way to do things if you want to stay frustrated.</p>
<p>But if you want results, then you need to look within to find out what makes you tick and what it&#8217;s going to get you fired up!</p>

<p>It was great to find out what many of you are refueling your bodies with after a workout. Overall, a lot of your &#8220;meals&#8221; are pretty good. They definitely gave me some more ideas.</p>
<p>As promised, for meeting the 50-comment challenge, I have another amazing workout nutrition video for you today. This video deals with ALL aspects of PRE- and POST-workout eating.</p>
<p>So, you&#8217;re going to get the &#8220;low down&#8221; on what to eat before and after your workouts and which food sources are your best friends when it comes to carbs, proteins, and healthy fats.</p>

<p>I also mentioned that I would share 3 of my favourite post-workout recipes with you as well.</p>
<p>And here&#8217;s a little secret&#8230;</p>
<p>You can actually use these as your pre-workout meals/snacks as well!</p>
<h3>Yuri&#8217;s &#8220;All Natural&#8221; Sports Drink</h3>
<p>This is my &#8220;go-to&#8221; sports drink after a sweat fest in the gym, outside, or after a game. It tastes better than the Gatorade and doesn&#8217;t have all the nasty dyes.</p>
<p><em>To prepare, just mix everything together in a glass.</em></p>
<p>500 ml water<br />
2-3 tbsp pure maple syrup<br />
Juice of 1/2 lime<br />
Juice of 1/2 lemon<br />
Pinch of sea salt</p>
<h3>The Ultimate Green Smoothie</h3>
<p>Post-workout smoothies just don&#8217;t get any better than this. It&#8217;s got everything you need &#8211; and more!</p>
<p><em>To prepare, just throw everything in a blender and give it a whirl!</em></p>
<p>1 apple<br />
1 banana<br />
3-4 leaves of kale, stemmed<br />
1 handful of spinach<br />
1 tbsp spirulina<br />
1 tbsp fish oil<br />
1 tbsp hemp seeds<br />
1 tsp maple syrup or agave<br />
Juice of 1 lime<br />
500 ml water</p>
<h3>Best Oatmeal Ever!</h3>
<p>A more substantial meal for 3-4 hours before or 1-2 hours after your workout, this oatmeal contains all the good stuff &#8211; starchy carbs, great protein, and healthy fats.</p>
<p><em>To prepare, once oatmeal has been sufficiently cooked, add diced apples and cinnamon. Stir for 2-3 minutes. Serve into a bowl and mix in nut butter, flax seed oil/seeds, maple syrup/agave. Stir and enjoy!</em></p>
<p>1/2 cup steel cut oats, boiled and simmered to liking<br />
1 apple, diced<br />
1 tbsp cinnamon<br />
1-2 tbsp maple syrup or agave<br />
1 tbsp nut butter (preferably raw organic)<br />
1 tbsp ground flax seed<br />
1 tbsp flax seed oil</p>
<p>There you go guys&#8230;</p>
<p>3 delicious and healthy workout recipes ranging from immediate refueling to more substantial, satiating meals.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.yurielkaim.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/eating-after-workout.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-301 alignright" style="margin-top: 4px; margin-bottom: 4px; margin-left: 8px; margin-right: 8px;" title="eating-after-workout" src="http://www.yurielkaim.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/eating-after-workout.jpg" alt="" width="345" height="234" /></a>Last night, I was working out with my buddy Sam (he&#8217;s the guinea pig in my workout videos in Month 2 of <a href="http://www.fitterufitness.com/free-trial.html">Fitter U Fitness</a>). Sam&#8217;s been one of my best friends for well over a decade but I still can&#8217;t seem to shake him from his &#8220;old school&#8221; workout regimes.</p>
<p>What I mean by this is that he&#8217;s big into the &#8220;bodybuilder-like&#8221; split-routines (a la, biceps/triceps, legs/shoulders, etc..). Not that there&#8217;s anything wrong with that type of training but I personally can&#8217;t stand it.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, we had a very challenging arm workout.</p>
<p>Oh, I forgot to mention that he was 20 minutes for our workout so I decided to do one of my latest interval training workouts (HIT 27) from Month 14 of Fitter U Fitness. Wicked, kick-ass workout!</p>
<p>So, Sam shows up and I&#8217;m already drenched in sweat and not exactly in the mood to go through with our arms routine &#8211; but I did it anyway.</p>
<p>We finished up around 9pm and we&#8217;re then supposed to meet some friends for drinks. The last thing I wanted after that workout was a drink &#8211; at least not an alcoholic one.</p>
<p>Thankfully, I remembered to bring one of my favourite post-workout snacks &#8211; a banana!</p>
<p>As soon as I left the gym floor, and before I hit the showers, I got that banana into my body as fast as possible. This was after downing about 1.5 liters of water. I figured that&#8217;s how much sweat I lost during the workout.</p>
<p>Anyways, a lot of people ask me what they should be drinking or eating after their workouts. Have you ever wondered the same thing?</p>
<p>In fact, Sam didn&#8217;t have anything with him and didn&#8217;t end up drinking or eating anything for about 1 hour after the workout &#8211; not a great idea.</p>
<p>So, if you&#8217;ve ever wondered what to drink or eat after your workouts, then you&#8217;re going to want watch the video I put together which will give you everything you need to know for proper refueling after your training sessions.</p>
<h3>And I highly recommend that you watch it because&#8230;</h3>
<p>What you drink and eat after your workouts is probably one of the most important decisions you can make. Refuel with the wrong fluids and foods and you prolong your recovery and drain your body of further energy.</p>
<p>On the flipside, if you eat and drink the rights foods (which I’m about to show) then you can enjoy quicker recovery, less soreness, all the while feeling stronger and more energetic.</p>

<p>In that post, I also mentioned that Sunday was perhaps one of the craziest days of my life. And indeed it was!</p>
<p>The reason?</p>
<p>I was flying back from Orange County &#8211; only a 4-hour direct flight &#8211; but boy did things take several wrong turns.</p>
<p>So, in this post, I&#8217;m going to share with you how a 4-hour flight turned into 9 hours, as well as, some lessons we can all learn about dealing with the unexpected.</p>
<h3>Sunday &#8211; 5:30am (Pacific time)</h3>
<p>I get up bright and early after going to bed at 1am so I can get to the airport for my 8am flight. In retrospect, I would have been better off waking up at 6:30am and showing up 30 minutes before my flight because I had already checked (thank you iPhone!) and only had a carry-on bag. Plus, the airport was 5 minutes from the hotel. Oh well. I was awake and feeling good.</p>
<h3>8am (pacific time)</h3>
<p>I was thrilled, yet again, to get the best seat in the house! I had a window in the emergency exit row with no seat in front of me. I was literally lounging &#8211; it was great. I also had this seat on the way to the OC so I was thrilled to get it again. Actually, the guy beside told me that he had reserved it but then changed his seat and then it was &#8220;gone&#8221; when he tried switching back. I offered to trade him but he said it was all good.</p>
<p>Just before taxiing to take off, the flight attendant comes over and ensures that the passengers in the emergency exit rows are OK with dealing with an emergency procedure. I said, &#8220;No problem, I&#8217;ve done it several times!&#8221;</p>
<p>Maybe I should have kept my mouth shut!</p>
<p>The flight then takes off, with the steepest climb I&#8217;ve ever experienced in my life &#8211; I thought we were going into space! Apparently, there&#8217;s some rule in the OC that planes have to &#8220;get out&#8221; as fast as possible. I can understand because it was pretty noisy down there due to all the air traffic &#8211; I wouldn&#8217;t be a happy resident in that area.</p>
<p><em>[Note: I'm now going to switch over to EDT to make things easier. It's 3 hours ahead of pacific time]</em></p>
<h3>11am &#8211; 3pm (EDT)</h3>
<p>Although I had a great seat, this one was of the consistently bumpy flights ever. Nothing crazy but just constant low-grade turbulence. Kind of like driving on the terribly maintained streets of Toronto!</p>
<h3>3:30pm (EDT)</h3>
<p>As we approach Pearson airport in Toronto, I&#8217;m thrilled to look at my watch and see that we&#8217;re about 20 minutes early. Yes &#8211; I might actually get to watch the end of the world cup final!</p>
<h3>3:35pm (EDT)</h3>
<p>Within about 2 minutes and just a few hundred feet short of landing, the plane, all of a sudden, revs the engine and climbs back into the clouds!</p>
<p>&#8220;What the heck is going on?&#8221; is what most of us were thinking. A few moments later the pilot comes on and says that we had to abort the landing because there was some very dangerous thunderstorm activity and unpredictable winds right over the airport.</p>
<p>Damn, I wasn&#8217;t going to get to watch the world cup final. But I guess it&#8217;s better to be alive!</p>
<p>Anyways, you could tell the pilot was in a hurry to get out of the area. And thankfully so. As we cleared a ridiculous t-storm, you could tell the clouds were &#8220;angry&#8221;. Dark grey cumulus clouds charged with tons of humidity and just waiting to pop!</p>
<p>So the plane circled ALL the way around the storm, which took about 45 minutes, and then decided to land in nearby Hamilton.</p>
<h3>4:45pm (EDT)</h3>
<p>We land in Hamilton &#8211; which is just 1 hour&#8217;s drive from Toronto. It&#8217;s pretty funny that we were pretty much the only airplane sitting on an empty tarmac surrounded by cow pastures. Nice change of scenario from the crazy Toronto airport.</p>
<h3>6:00pm (EDT)</h3>
<p>We get refueled and the pilots get a new flight plan to head back to Toronto now that the storm had passed. I&#8217;m thinking that this is going to be the quickest flight of all time &#8211; maybe 10 minutes at best!</p>
<h3><strong>6:20 (EDT)</strong></h3>
<p>Wow, we&#8217;re already on the landing pattern for Toronto. We get within a few hundred feet of landing when&#8230;</p>
<p>Once again&#8230;</p>
<p>The plane pulls up and climbs back up into the sky!</p>
<p>Now, everyone starting to get a bit worried. After all, the sky was completely clear and the sun was shining through.</p>
<p>The pilot comes and tells us&#8230;</p>
<p>&#8220;Well, as you can see, the weather is beautiful, but now we&#8217;re having a problem with the landing gear. We&#8217;re going to circle around and do some manual work to get everything in working order.&#8221;</p>
<p>Holy cow.  I had a friend who went through a similar situation in Texas and it didn&#8217;t sound like too much fun. But I had a feeling that everything was going to be fine.</p>
<h3>6:45pm (EDT)</h3>

Finally, we approach the runway and&#8230;</p>
<p>This time we actually land! Hallelujah!!!</p>
<p>So I send Amy a text to pick me up at 7:15pm. But then&#8230;</p>
<p>The plane stops on the tarmac and just sits there. The pilot comes back on and tells us that due to the storm there are a ton of planes on the ground (aka. traffic jam) and that we don&#8217;t have a gate.</p>
<h3>7:00pm (EDT)</h3>
<p>After 15 minutes of not moving, I send Amy another text telling her to just come and pick me up at 7:45pm (we only live about 15 minutes from the airport). I realized that we weren&#8217;t going to be moving for a little while.</p>
<p>But then&#8230;</p>
<p>The planes starts rolling. Yes!</p>
<h3>7:15pm (EDT)</h3>
<p>Now, we&#8217;re right at the gate and still nothing. What&#8217;s going on?</p>
<p>The pilot comes on again and says that we&#8217;re just 100 feet from our gate but that there&#8217;s no ground crew to take us in!</p>
<p>We sit for another 20 minutes just feet from our final destination. Might as well hold a piece of strawberry-rhubarb pie in front of me and tell me I can&#8217;t eat it!!!</p>
<h3>7:40pm (EDT)</h3>
<p>At last&#8230;.</p>
<p>The plane arrives at the gate, the ground crew is there, and we finally deplane.</p>
<p>I walk my butt off to get to customs and out the door as fast as possible because I know that Amy&#8217;s waiting for me any second now!</p>
<h3>7:50pm (EDT)</h3>
<p>I&#8217;m out of the airport in just 10 minutes!</p>
<p>Oh how I love traveling with only carry-on and having no line up in customs. It&#8217;s the best.</p>
<p>All in all, what was supposed to be a routine 4-hour direct flight turned into one of the longest and most eventful flights I&#8217;ve been on.</p>
<h3>Dealing with the Unexpected</h3>
<p>Now, you might expect most of the passengers (including myself) to be pretty anxious to run off the plane or get pissed off for the 4.5 hour delay but&#8230;</p>
<p>The exact opposite happened!</p>
<p>It was absolutely amazing. No one complained. No one was pushing and shoving to get off the plane. It was awesome. Maybe because it was the weekend or maybe it was because everyone was just happy to have landed safe and sound? I know I was.</p>
<p>After all, is there really any point in getting frustrated? I didn&#8217;t have a connecting flight. Many people did but they didn&#8217;t lose their marbles.</p>
<p>In these kind of &#8220;uncontrollable&#8221; situations your best bet is to just CHILL. Because you have absolutely no control over the outcome it simply isn&#8217;t worth stressing yourself out. Save your adrenals!</p>
<p><strong><em>Note: Mom, if you&#8217;re reading this&#8230;I learned a lot from those early morning drives with you. I&#8217;m just happy you weren&#8217;t on this flight. You would have lost it!</em></strong></p>
<p>So the take home message here is that sometimes in life, there are situations that are beyond our control. And it&#8217;s how we deal with these situations that defines them (and us all). What would have been the benefit of freaking out?</p>
<p>None.</p>
<p>Would freaking out have made the plane land or made the thunderstorm go away or got the ground crew to our gate sooner? NO.</p>
<p>So what&#8217;s the point?</p>
<p>You might as well sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride. Heck, I got in an extra 4 hours of reading &#8211; that&#8217;s pretty good!</p>

<p>I was down here to connect with several of my online fitness friends and colleagues and boy did we have some fun…</p>
<p>Oh…and…get some good work done.</p>
<p>As I mentioned earlier, I also used this trip to finish up a few things for the BIG DAY…</p>
<p>July 27th!</p>
<p>What I’ve got coming for you is going to blow your mind.</p>
<p>But more on that later.</p>
<p>In the meantime, I wanted to share something really embarrassing with you&#8230;</p>
<p>Why?</p>
<p>Well, why the heck not!?</p>
<p>I don’t take myself too seriously, plus…</p>
<p>You’re my friend so I feel comfortable divulging some of my “not-so-great” moments with you. After all, sharing embarrassing stories was kind of the theme of this past weekend – so now I’m just riding the wave.</p>
<p>I even decided to shoot a little video of myself walking down the street in the OC telling you about this hilariously embarrassing moment that happened to me just a few months ago.</p>

<p>Actually, since I’m too lazy to actually write this story, I’ll just let the video do the work.</p>
