<p>Arnold Schwarzenegger is a special individual. He&#8217;s the real deal!</p>
<p>You can learn a lot from Arnold, especially if you want to build muscle.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;ve ever seen the movie <em>Pumping Iron</em>, which is pretty much a documentary of Arnold&#8217;s journey toward his final Mr. Universe title, you&#8217;ll know what I mean.</p>
<p>Today, I want to share 3 lessons that I&#8217;ve learned from Arnold. I know that if you apply these, you too can build a muscular physique or achieve any fitness goal you&#8217;re after.</p>
<h3>Lesson #1 &#8211; Believe That You&#8217;re the Best</h3>
<p>The truth is that not everyone likes Arnold, especially since taking his career into politics and running California.</p>
<p>But you cannot deny the fact that he has ALWAYS accomplished what he&#8217;s set out to accomplish.</p>
<p>One of the reasons he&#8217;s been able to do so is that he has always had an unshakeable belief in himself. In fact, some would say that he&#8217;s borderline cocky and arrogant.</p>
<p>When he first arrived in America and was competing as a bodybuilder, barely able to speak English properly, Arnold declared that he would become a Hollywood star.</p>
<p>We all know how that turned out.</p>
<p>Then, he wanted to venture into politics. Now, he&#8217;s the governator of California.</p>
<p>Arnold has always believed he was the best. This belief in himself has led to incredible accomplishments.</p>
<p>I believe that self-belief is one of the most important attributes you must develop if you want to achieve your dreams. You need to believe that you can do something and believe that you deserve to achieve it.</p>
<p>In the movie Pumping Iron, Arnold was already convinced that he had won his 6th Mr. Universe title &#8211; way before it happened. He even sat down to breakfast with the young Lou Ferrigno &#8211; who was just starting to compete at the time &#8211; and told him that he might as well pack up his bags because the contest had already been decided.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s a fine line between arrogance and confidence, but, if you can walk it, you&#8217;ll be able to transform your body (and your life) more easily than if you constantly doubt yourself.</p>
<h3>Lesson #2 &#8211; It Takes Hard Work and Sacrifice</h3>
<p>If you want to build muscle, the truth is that you need to bust your butt. Think about this for a second&#8230;</p>
<p>If you weigh 160 lbs and want to pack on 40 lbs of lean, hard muscle, it&#8217;s going to take some serious hard work &#8211; both in the gym and in the kitchen.</p>
<p>Sometimes ADDING muscle can be more difficult than LOSING weight, simply because you&#8217;re creating something that is not yet there.</p>
<p>Arnold demonstrated the concept of hard work and sacrifice beautifully. He loved working out. He loved pushing himself to the limits. While other bodybuilders were dropping to the floor with fatigue, Arnold was just getting started.</p>
<p>At the same time, Arnold knew that working out was his number one priority &#8211; no matter what. He was so compelled by what he was doing that he even told his mother, upon learning of his father&#8217;s death, that he would not return to Austria to attend his father&#8217;s funeral!</p>
<p>Can you imagine that?</p>
<p>He was driven to succeed. He was happy to sacrifice anything that detracted from his vision.</p>
<p>A similar thing is often seen with pro athletes who forego many early life experiences (ie. family vacations, regular schooling, etc&#8230;) to focus on training and competing.</p>
<p>Even though these are extreme examples, the fact of the matter is that the pursuit of any goal requires a ton of hard work and some degree of sacrifice.</p>
<p>Any decision you make either moves you closer toward your goal or farther away from it. If you decide to sit on the couch instead of hitting the gym, you are moving away from your goal of building a lean muscular body.</p>
<p>And if your goal is to pack on several pounds of muscle you need to understand that it&#8217;s not going to happen overnight. Rome wasn&#8217;t built in a day and neither was your body. Understanding this will help you stay on track even if you don&#8217;t see immediate results from your training.</p>
<h3>Lesson #3 &#8211; Don&#8217;t Let Your Genetics Stop You!</h3>
<p>Who on earth would have thought that Arnold, a boy from a small village in Austria, would amount to such success?</p>
<p>His father was no bodybuilder, actor, or politician. He was a local policeman and was very strict with Arnold.</p>
<p>But sometimes facing insurmountable odds is what makes <em>some</em> people so resilient and so incredibly successful.</p>
<p>Arnold wasn&#8217;t necessarily gifted with bodybuilding genes but he made up for this by falling in love with weight training at the tender age of 15, which helped him transform his body into what he desired.</p>
<p>He wasn&#8217;t born into a wealthy, influential family here in the US. Instead, he jump over one hurdle after another to build his body, learn English, get into acting, and eventually run the state of California.</p>
<p>If there was ever an example of overcoming genetic potential, it&#8217;s Arnold!</p>
<h3>Have Your Genes Been Holding You Back?</h3>
<p>Do you feel limited by your genetic potential? Have you tried to pack on muscle with little success?</p>
<p>This is what a lot of people &#8211; who are devoted to building a muscular physique &#8211; have often reported. It&#8217;s also the reason that many turn to unhealthy supplements and even steroids.</p>
<p>But that isn&#8217;t the solution.</p>

<p>Amy and I were just in New York City this past week. (<em>This is a picture of us at LaGuardia waiting for our return flight)</em></p>
<p>It was a great trip filled with about 30 km of walking and two days of US Open tennis in blistering heat that left us absolutely exhausted by the time we returned home on Wednesday night.</p>
<p>Not only did we cover almost all of Manhattan by foot but we also got to see Roger Federer make history (again) with an amazing between the legs winner in his opening night match!</p>
<p>I’ve always wanted to go to the US Open and I’m so happy that we got to attend the event and see a lot of New York – all in just 3 days.</p>

<p>What an awesome experience. If you enjoy tennis, this is one event you&#8217;ve got to attend.</p>
<h3>Eating on the Road</h3>
<p>As you can imagine, there are tons of great restaurants in New York and we did enjoy our fair share of them. And for the most part, the food we ate was healthy whole food. Although it wasn’t a “raw vegan” culinary trip, we did drink tons of water and got in some fresh fruits whenever possible.</p>
<p>So overall, other than some serious leg and foot soreness, it was a great trip.</p>
<p>But sometimes, eating well while traveling (or in general) isn’t that easy. For instance, a lot of you have asked if I eat healthy all the time…</p>
<p>And the answer is…</p>
<p>NO.</p>
<p>I do my best to follow my 80-20 rule of eating well but I also allow for some “guilty pleasures” (ie. a latte and croissant), especially while traveling.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, eating well isn’t always easy.</p>
<p>And that’s why today, I want to share another great video with you on how to overcome bad eating habits.</p>

<p>Specifically, I&#8217;ve put together a lengthy, yet highly important video that will give you some amazing weight loss help to help you overcome many of the most common <a href="http://www.yurielkaim.com/459/your-biggest-challenges-to-losing-weight/">weight loss challenges</a> that everyone shared in one of our previous posts.</p>
<p>I read each one of the 115 comments and lumped the many of your weight loss concerns into the following 8 themes&#8230;</p>
<ul>
<li>snacking (during the day or night)</li>
<li>lack of motivation to exercise</li>
<li>being influenced by others (ie. traveling, staying with others), lack of support</li>
<li>lack of self control (eating too much, too little, etc&#8230;)</li>

<p>Just so you know, I&#8217;ve been going through ALL of the comments on the blog from last week regarding your <a href="http://www.yurielkaim.com/459/your-biggest-challenges-to-losing-weight/">weight loss challenges</a> and i&#8217;ll be posting a BIG video response by Wednesday for you.</p>
<p>In the meantime, I want to take this chance to give you some &#8220;Monday Motivation&#8221;.</p>
<p>Did you know that human beings are elastic?</p>
<p>That&#8217;s right.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m not suggesting that you&#8217;re an elastic band. What I am implying though is that we can bounce back from anything.</p>
<p>One definition of &#8220;elastic&#8221; (from physics) is the &#8220;reversible deformation of a material&#8221;. For instance, when you stretch a piece of rubber, it usually returns to its original state, right?</p>
<p>The same thing happens with our muscles. In most cases, even though we may stretch, our muscles eventually return to their natural length.</p>
<p>But more interesting that our muscles is the human spirit.</p>
<p>Have you ever seen the movie Batman Begins?</p>
<p>In it, Bruce Wayne (aka. Batman) gets his mansion burned to the ground by the villains.</p>
<p>Bruce is knocked unconscious during this &#8220;heist&#8221; only to saved by his trust butler &#8211; Alfred.</p>
<p>Upon waking the following day, Bruce is dejected and ready to throw in the towel. He had been up against so much and was ready to call it quits.</p>
<p>But then Alfred says something absolutely inspiring. Do you remember what he said?</p>
<p>Here it is:</p>
<p><strong><em>&#8220;Bruce, why do fall down? So we can get back up!&#8221;</em></strong></p>
<p>So simple, yet so profound.</p>
<p>You can look at that statement any way you like but I&#8217;m sure there have been times in your life when you&#8217;ve been knocked down or felt like giving up.</p>
<p>Maybe it was after working so hard in the gym and not seeing the results you&#8217;ve wanted to see?</p>
<p>Or maybe it was eating really healthy for several days or weeks only to end up going on a &#8220;bender&#8221; over the weekend, then criticizing yourself for not being &#8220;perfect&#8221;?</p>
<p>The point is that there are so many times in life when things won&#8217;t happen as you expect them to.</p>
<p>A perfect example is the recent launch of our Fitter Than the Pros project. This was a project that I spent hundreds of hours working on over the past year. And I had HUGE expectations for it.</p>
<p>I thought it would be something that EVERYONE needed and wanted.</p>
<p>But I was wrong.</p>
<p>We may have done 5% of what I had projected. And sure I could have laid in bed for days and cried the blues or felt sorry for myself.</p>
<p>But I didn&#8217;t.</p>
<p>After all, how would that have served me?</p>
<p>Plus, the feedback that customers were giving us about FTTP was amazing, so that was great. I knew (and still know) that it&#8217;s a program that can help a ton of people take their lives to the next level!</p>
<p>The important thing to remember is that life happens.</p>
<p>But it&#8217;s the meaning you give to any particular situation that determines your reality.</p>
<p>For instance, 2 people experience the exact same event. Why is it that they come out of it with different feelings or opinions about what happened?</p>
<p>It&#8217;s all relative. It&#8217;s all about the meaning you give something.</p>
<p>And that&#8217;s why it&#8217;s important to be resilient (elastic, if you will) and realize that nothing will hold you back from your dreams &#8211; unless you allow it to.</p>
<p>One of the most common issues people have is the need for perfection. Myself included.</p>
<p>We want our diet to perfect and, if it&#8217;s not, then we&#8217;ve given ourselves an excuse to eat whatever we want because &#8220;what&#8217;s the point, right?&#8221;</p>
<p>Wrong!</p>
<p>The point is this&#8230;</p>
<p>We must always strive for perfection knowing full-well that we will never achieve it!</p>
<p>The best we can hope for is excellence because perfection is a pipe dream.</p>
<p>When you allow yourself to be human, to err, and to be ok with that you will have an easier time bouncing back from hardship and moving on.</p>
<p>So take Alfred&#8217;s advice and &#8220;get back up!&#8221;</p>

<p>Well, very simply, TNT stands for &#8220;today not tomorrow&#8221;. And in this day and age of being overwhelmed with stuff to do, which ultimately leads to procrastination and getting nothing done, the TNT principle couldn&#8217;t be more important for you.</p>
<p>In fact, if you apply the TNT principle on a consistent basis, you will get explosive results (pun intended &#8211; haha).</p>
<p>Now let&#8217;s apply the TNT principle to a common goal &#8211; burning fat.</p>
<p><em>(Note: the following can also be applied to any health or fitness goal).</em></p>
<p>How often have YOU fallen victim to mental dialogue that goes a little something like this&#8230;</p>
<p><em>&#8220;I&#8217;ll start eating better tomorrow.&#8221;</em></p>
<p><em>&#8220;I&#8217;m too tired today, but I&#8217;ll hit the gym first thing tomorrow.&#8221;</em></p>
<p>I know I have and if you&#8217;re human you probably have too.</p>
<p>In fact, just the last night, I got home late from our first day of pre-season training with U of T soccer. I knew that I had to get up bright and early this morning which meant that I probably wouldn&#8217;t get a chance to make my beloved green juice (because Amy, the dogs, and our neighbours would still be sleeping).</p>
<p>So I said that AFTER watching True Blood I would spend 30-45 minutes to make a green juice. Did it happen?</p>
<p>Nope.</p>
<p>Why?</p>
<p>Cuz I was too tired from 9 hours of soccer &#8211; that&#8217;s why!</p>
<p>The result &#8211; no green juice.</p>
<p>Now if my goal were to lose weight and burn fat, this would be a big no-no because it would likely that I would turn to a less healthy option for breakfast (instead of my green juice).</p>
<p>So let&#8217;s STOP the insanity once and for all!!!</p>
<p>The name of the game is DOING THINGS NOW.</p>
<p>Nike says &#8220;Just do it&#8221; in their campaigns and I take it one step further by saying &#8220;Just do it NOW!&#8221;</p>
<p>A lot of times we put things off because we feel that they are too overwhelming. We form a mental picture of some grandiose task &#8211; a mountain instead of a mole hill &#8211; and as a result we don&#8217;t take action.</p>
<h3>Looking at Your Workouts a Little Differently</h3>
<p>I&#8217;m not sure what goes in your mind when you &#8220;see&#8221; your upcoming workout. Maybe you envision pain from the muscle burn or the hassle of having to drive to the gym, or having to weight for equipment because the gym is so busy. Or maybe you workout at home and get seem to get focused with everything going on around you.</p>
<p>We all &#8220;see&#8221; our lives differently.</p>
<p>However, what I can suggest is that no matter which you way you mentally view your upcoming workout do your best to focus on making it a pleasurable experience that is chunked down into bite size pieces.</p>
<p>See only ONE element of your workout at a time. Don&#8217;t allow yourself to get overwhelmed with all the little details of your workout or things you need to during the rest of your day.</p>
<p>As you know, I&#8217;m a huge fan of visualization &#8211; and you should be too. Because whether you realize it or not, you are projecting mental images that ultimately create your reality. So might as well choose the ones that will empower you.</p>
<h3>Here are a 5 things that I do to keep me on track with my workouts:</h3>
<ul>
<li>Review my goals on a daily basis (first thing in the morning and before going to bed),</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Visualize my ideal body, especially before going to bed and on my way to the gym,</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Create a VERY clear and precise workout plan &#8211; if I&#8217;m not using one of my <a href="http://www.fitterufitness.com/free-trial.html">Fitter U Fitness workouts</a>, then I&#8217;m creating new ones, writing them down (on paper) in detail, and taking that plan with me to the gym.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Revisit my core values to help prioritize my day &#8211; One of my top core values is health and vitality so that means that my workouts get done FIRST &#8211; before anything else. So now, most of my workouts take place 7-9 am. Then I get the rest of my day&#8217;s work done.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Plan for days off to avoid burnout &#8211; My goal is to workout 5-6 times per week. But I also look forward to those off days where I do absolutely nothing because I know that&#8217;s when my body is getting stronger. It also allows me to recover mentally from all the hard work.</li>
</ul>
<p>I hope you can take some valuable tips from what has helped me stay consistent with working out.</p>
<p>And remember, perhaps more important than anything else is your ability to do things now (not tomorrow) and to do so consistently. You need to &#8220;flex&#8221; your habit-forming muscles and the only way to do that is through repetition. Get used to doing things (big and small) that you don&#8217;t necessarily FEEL like doing (like getting up early) and get in the habit of doing them.</p>
<p>Pretty soon, what was once uncomfortable will now become second nature.</p>

<p>1 head of kale<br />
1 bunch parsley<br />
2 carrots<br />
1 apple<br />
6 stalks celery<br />
1/4 cucumber<br />
1/2 lemon<br />
1 inch cube  fresh ginger</p>
<p>Throw all these ingredients through a juicer and get ready for ultimate energy. This recipe will give you about 500 ml.</p>

<p>Wait&#8230;.</p>
<p>Maybe you will???</p>
<p><strong>Recent research has shown that rats can become physically addicted to a diet that is high in junk foods and prefer to starve themselves rather than go back to eating healthy food!</strong></p>
<p>Let&#8217;s look at the details of this research&#8230;</p>
<p>In a series of studies conducted over the course of three years and published in the journal <em>Nature Neuroscience,</em> have shown that feeding rats unlimited amounts of junk food leads to responses to similar to that seen in patterns of drug addiction &#8212; even down to the changes in brain chemistry.</p>
<p>In their first study, the researchers fed rats either a balanced diet or the same (balanced) diet plus unlimited access to junk foods, which included processed meats and cakes.</p>
<p>And would you believe it&#8230;?</p>
<p>Within a short time period, the rats on the junk food diet began to eat compulsively and quickly became overweight.</p>
<p>The researchers stated the <strong>junk food rats were eating TWICE as many calories</strong> as the balanced diet rats. It&#8217;s no wonder that they gained weight so easily, as know that gaining or losing weight comes down to calories in MINUS calories out.</p>
<h3>But what caused these rats to eat insatiably?</h3>
<p>The researchers hypothesized that the rats were eating compulsively because, like drug addicts, they had become desensitized to smaller amounts and needed more and more for the same rush of pleasure.</p>
<p>Many recreational drugs work by directly stimulating the brain&#8217;s pleasure centers, particularly the dopamine receptor known as D2. Overstimulation of this receptor causes the body to start producing less dopamine, leading the addict to compensate by taking more of the drug.</p>
<p>Since dopamine can also be released by pleasurable activities such as food or sex, the researchers speculated that food addiction could develop in the same way.</p>
<p>To test their hypothesis, they then took the rats from the first experiment and hooked their brains up to a device that would directly stimulate their D2 receptors when they ran on a wheel.</p>
<p>Rats eating a junk food diet ran on the wheel significantly longer than rats fed a normal diet, suggesting that their receptors had indeed become desensitized. This &#8220;profound&#8221; desensitization occurred after just five days on a junk food diet.</p>
<p>However, I would inject that their endurance may also have been greater because of the HUGE calorie surplus the junk food rats had to fuel their wheel running.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, the researchers once again stated that these rats were showing behaviour almost identical to drug addicts &#8211; for instance, a lack of self-control.</p>
<p>In the third test of their addiction hypothesis, the researchers used a virus to block the D2 receptors in healthy rats. All those rats soon became compulsive eaters.</p>
<p>After observing this, they noted that this was the most complete evidence to date that suggests obesity and drug addiction have common neurobiological underpinnings!</p>
<p>Pretty incredible, isn&#8217;t it.</p>
<p>But it gets even better&#8230;</p>
<p>Having established that the junk food rats had become addicted, the researchers wanted to know how far this addiction would push them.</p>
<p>So they took both junk-food addicted rats and rats that had not previously been exposed to such food, and exposed them to electrical shocks whenever they ate junk. Rats that had just been introduced to junk food quickly stopped eating it, while the addicted rats ignored the discomfort and kept eating.</p>
<p>Perhaps the most shocking finding came when the researchers took away the addicted rats&#8217; access to junk food and started feeding them only healthy rat chow again &#8212; the same diets the rats had eaten as pups.</p>
<p>When junk food was no longer available, the rats simply refused to eat for two weeks!!!</p>
<p>They essentially starved themselves &#8211; voluntarily!</p>
<p>This whole area of addiction is fascinating and it can possibly explain why so many people have a very tough time changing their dietary habits for the better.</p>
<p>Especially, when you consider that most junk foods contain &#8220;addictive&#8221; substance like MSG and high-fructose corn syrup, it almost seems that it&#8217;s an uphill battle if you&#8217;ve been subjected to such foods.</p>
<p>I think it&#8217;s also helpful to remember that if you&#8217;ve been struggling to change the way you eat and you have not succeeded, then it might not totally be your fault. Obviously, you need to take responsibility for your health but when you consider that there may be a physiological addiction, it&#8217;s going to take a lot more will power (and perhaps other means) to change your ways.</p>
<p>And we&#8217;ve all been there.</p>
<p>I grew up on bread, pasta, cereal, and milk. Sweets have always been my downfall. I know first-hand how tough it can be to eat healthier when you&#8217;ve been exposed to processed foods your whole life.</p>
<p>But I know that we can do it. You can do it.</p>
<h3>But It Takes a Decision</h3>
<p>You must decide which way you want to go. If you want to eat for better health, then you must decide to do so. And don&#8217;t worry, it will be tough &#8211; initially. But as with anything, once you get the ball rolling and you build momentum, you will be unstoppable.</p>
<p>Oh&#8230;</p>
<p>And another great strategy is to simply radically alter your internal physiology!</p>
<p>What do I mean by this?</p>
<p>Well, generally, we are addicted to what&#8217;s in our blood &#8211; ie. the most common foods we eat. Most often, our blood is far too acidic. One of the most effective remedies for this is to inject a massive amount of alkalinity into your body.</p>
<p>I find that drinking several green juices a day can help.</p>
<p>This is actually I&#8217;m doing right now. My personal goal is to drink 1-1.5 liters of green juice everyday. I know that recently my diet hasn&#8217;t been as clean as it should be and I know it&#8217;s not going to miraculously change it itself overnight.</p>
<p>So that&#8217;s why I&#8217;m turning to my good friend &#8211; the green juice.</p>

<p>So last night I went to watch Rafael Nadal play Stanislav Wawrinka at the Rogers Cup (yes, I&#8217;m a huge tennis fanatic).</p>
<p>I&#8217;d never seen Nadal play (in the flesh) so it was a last minute decision to drive 1 hour across the city in horrid traffic to watch the world&#8217;s #1 player.</p>
<p>I ended up getting those &#8220;nose bleed&#8221; section tickets &#8211; you know the ones where you feel closer to the planes flying over head than you do to the court?!</p>
<p>Nonetheless, they were still pretty good seats.</p>
<p>But what a match!</p>
<p>The first set lasted 1 hour and 40 minutes! That&#8217;s one of the longest sets of tennis I had ever seen. But it was also one of the highest quality sets I had ever seen as well.</p>
<p>After a grueling tiebreak, Nadal ended up taking the first set and, then the second, to win the whole match. I think Wawrinka was devastated that he didn&#8217;t win the first set &#8211; he had so many chances to do so.</p>
<p>And I felt sorry for &#8220;Stan&#8221; because he is such a great player. Just in case you don&#8217;t know, he won the Olympic gold medal (in doubles) with this fellow Swiss countryman, Roger Federer a few years back.</p>
<p>Watching Stan leave the court dejected reminded me of all the times in my life where I failed to &#8220;strike while the iron was hot&#8221;. I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;ve had those moments as well, right? Not a great feeling at all.</p>
<p>The worse part is that Stan was in the driver&#8217;s seat. It was Nadal&#8217;s first match in 6 weeks (since Wimbledon) and it definitely showed. Stan had several set points but just couldn&#8217;t find a way to seal the deal.</p>
<p>Now, there&#8217;s only remorse for Stan.</p>
<p>And that&#8217;s something you don&#8217;t want to experience &#8211; I certainly don&#8217;t!</p>
<p>I mean check this out&#8230;</p>
<p>A 2009 study in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine revealed that individuals who exhibited higher levels of remorse and self-blame had much higher levels of inflammatory products (known as cytokines) in their blood!</p>
<p>Not good considering that inflammation is present in pretty much all disease!</p>
<p>I sure hope Stan bounces back strong for the US Open (coming up in just 2 weeks).</p>
