Siargao Satiation

The last "official summer" vacation I had in Siargao was in the late,

Latin-Pop heydays of the 1990s. Those family-reunion kinds where I was tagged along and

no liberty to roam around. I was back in 2007 for the wake & burial of my cousin (who had a brutal death in Davao same year), but I didn't consider that a vacation.

So fast forward a decade after, I find myself reacquainted with the sand roads, island aroma and algae bordering the seashore. And that signature General Luna shoreline smell had me nostalgic of me & my cousins strolling around then.

This was day 1 (May 5) in General Luna, Siargao

You see, a semi-untouched Purok 2 in General Luna is still visible.

Some resorts have sprouted to accomodate the growing number of tourists in the island.

You get around the island in a "habal-habal".

A number of resorts and pension houses are already walking distance in Purok 2; also some bars and restaurants/grill houses, kinda like Boracay already but you still get "peace and quiet" while on the road.

Happy Cebu gathered the "Top 12 Prettiest" of Cebu to grace the billboard of Beach Break 2013 and I'm thankful enough they hooked me up to inject the "right fashion"

to give these event brands a style boost!

The official photos would look effortless but the work and styling process

behind it ain't a walk in the park!

So I, with the second opinions of my associate Rockell, got vibrant colored swimwear (with the Caribbean and surfer chicks in mind) from Hot Pink brands Soak, Nudo and I Love Koi and cool assorted separates from Maze Hipzone's Spring/Summer 2013 pickings.

Then we start to choose the "right" swimwear for each girls to kind of

match their personality and more importantly, body frame.

I was going to get back to Panglao after that semi-spontaneous trip early February but most friends had no clear mind whether to go or not. Stressful updating couples on their yeses or nays - much more excruciating there's NO EFFIN COMMUNICATION!

WTH, shoving off the bad vibes the SINGLE me wanted to pare down on parties and crowds and hotties and just spend time on the beach with wonderful people. And on the last minute last Thursday, I just surprised Aoi with our rendezvous LOL!

I wanted to check back on Bantayan Island after 2 years partying and getting wild in Boracay. And there we were, 3 of us - Aoi and Armand "Arlene" Alforque (one of my OFP lensmen) also snapping up on a Bantayan decision hours before the last bus trip.

I found myself reunited with "Queen Bee" Armand and the whole amazingly fun and no-dull-moment BLANC online magazine team - esp. on the Bantayan beaches! Circa 2010 we were young souls hungry for some of these sand revelries.

Don Papa Rhum Now In Cebu!

(Manila, Philippines) Don Papa Rum, the locally produced, small batch premium rum is finally available in select bars and stores in the Queen City of the South. Launched during the world-famous Sinulog festival, Don Papa Rum hosted a party to announce its arrival and boast its pure local origins.

What makes a premium rum?

The process by which Don Papa is made begins with the selection of some of the finest and sweetest sugar cane in the world, grown on the rich volcanic soils of Negros. The resultant molasses are then distilled before being aged for over 7 years in American oak in the foothills of Mount Kanlaon. The rum is then charcoal filtered to remove any tannins and impurities before being blended to perfection. Don Papa is crafted with great precision and substantially amplifies the liquor experience. Best of all, it is 100% made in the Philippines.

You can only expect a rich, smooth taste every time you drink Don Papa Rum. It’s light and fruity on the nose, smooth and delicate in the mouth with a long textured finish. The art and precision in the process of making this rum make it so good that you can even drink it neat.

Yvestyle 2012 Fashion Milestones

2012 saw me as urban as ever through "trickskating" as I was mostly inspired by
skater fashion and the Mediterranean .

Skater style included putting on that baller/round cap (my 2012 addicition) for that instans swagger, wearing a long-sleeved shirt as a long-sleeved shirt - not folding the sleeves up but buttoning the cuff bands, some varsity inspirations and mixing sportswear with formal wear.

The Mediterranean inspiration came from the PRINTS and lounge-ness of the garments.
From foulard, baroque prints, scarf prints to Persian patterns and all-arpund Hawaiian florals,
I was enamored in this tropical trend so much that I wore them right away last February!

9 - March 2012: Perspaxico
Released my Summer 2012 collection dubbed as "Perspaxico",
a portmanteau of Persian and Mexican inspirations using foulard and indigenous materials for my "radical unusual" urbanite, via Sun.Star Live!

From ochres, blacks and Persian patterns to turning blue and neutral, leather and hologram for Holiday 2012.I called this collection "Trickskater" in reference and homage to my skateboarder-style channelings the whole year.

My first ever magazine cover - online, at least.
BLANC online magazine used my techno-wool white shite with satin shawl collar to "fashionize" Cebuano music nitabel Budoy in the cover of their Men's issue.

6 - November 2012: Miss UK Funwear
Designing for Queen of Cebu again.
After designing for 2009's Miss Spain's funwear, I was glad that the Queen committee included me in the roster to create funwear for the 2012 candidates. Much more happy that I was assigned to Miss United Kingdom. I created my most challenging "avant-garde" garment yet. Concept-wise it took me around 5 revisions to finalize and 1 week to do all the labor. I wanted a very different one thus I used acetate and LED lights as accent. Sayang nga lang I could have TURN OFF THE LIGHTS pala para makita yung effect sa lights ko. Oh well, many lauded my creation as the best and most creative naman, so that's good enough.

5 - October 2012: Styling Rajo Laurel's Holiday 2012 Lookbook
Heaps of thanks to sir Rajo for entrusting me the vision and fashion direction of his Holiday 2012 collection, Hanami! This was one of the most hectic shoot I've been in aside from styling Ayala Center Cebu's first The Terraces ads last 2008. I styled over 70 individual garments, used over 30 pairs of shoes from SM Parisian and Milanos, accented with around 50 pieces of accessories and countless revisions of little styling skews to make each look fashion-worthy.

3 - December 2012: First ever editorial in a major national glossy.
Cary Santiago curated 10 designers for a Preview magazine editorial that was to feature Cebuano designers. I was just over the moon when I was to create a look for this project!
I created 3 garments with an homage to Jimi Hendrix and the "print on pattern" trend.
It made its glossy debut last December in Preview magazine's Dec-Jan issue.

4, 2, 1 - February - July 2012: Project Runway Philippines season 3
4. Created my 1st look for Project Runway dubbed as "Samurai Lifeguard" from the pattern to the hemming! The most arduous and stressful labor I've been in!

2. Meeting other 14 young, creative people from around Luzon and Visayas, meeting and being criticized by 3 of the industry's notable names that have very discriminating taste in clothes!
MJ, Lhenvil, Amor, Karla, Mannie, Enzo, Nel, Milka, Fatima, Ionica, Glenn, Joseph, Jenno and Cheetah, the Project Runway life and experience wouldn't have been worthwhile and fun without your different personalities, aesthetics and hidden auras! LOL

Tweetie, Rajo and Apples thanks for the sharp words you defined my creations, if not for them, I wouldn't have improved now! Even if there were no "positive" feedback, I appreciated more the negative ones since "good" and "nice" are boring, "provocative" and "different" are the groundbreakers!

1. Being chosen as one of the 15 designer hopefuls to showcase their skills and visions in Project Runway Philippines. I auditioned since the 1st season and the 3rd time, I finally got in! Persistence and vision are keys!

Yvestyle 2012 Music Milestones

I'm a closet DJ or Rick Dee.

In actuality I've been ranking and counting down songs

since I saw the Spice Girls, 1997 and up to this day - that's already 13 years!

Before the blogosphere became my avenue for fashion and music thoughts,

I recorded my "Music Charts" in Merit notebooks, newsprint papers, spring notebooks during

the late '90s. And onto the desktop from 2000 onwards.

Here's a sampling of my No.1s:

2008 - "Bleeding Love" by Leona Lewis

2009 - "Single Ladies" by Beyonce

2010 - "Telephone" by Lady Gaga feat. Beyonce

2011 - "Super Bass" by Nicki Minaj

and this year, here are my Top 20 songs for 2012

plus 4 extra special tunes my year was defined by.

Jessie J's "DOMINO" topped my 100 list for its encompassing

good-vibes feel and no-holds-barred (that's my motto) message! Though superficial in some lyrics and, true this was a skew amongst her "Nobody's Perfect"-type of songs - I was surprised too - but this was playful and glossy, what I sometimes like in Pop nowadays.

This song has the "original" Jessie fade away a bit though, sans her angst and fierceness and has been criticized as a "ghoulish mess of Daft Punk and Katy Perry at her most annoying",

but IDGAD!

Brandy
Brandy's latest abum, Two Eleven - her release in four years - was just a breath panter for me!
I was elated to know she had new material. First off was "Put It Down" which at the start I didn't like the smooth slow urban vibe but eventually I got to feel its Brandyness - the slow jamming with a dash of ballad somewhere in the song.

Lana Del Rey

Amidst the ubiquitous techno-fied pop songs and dubstepping, there was one unhappy, lazy balladeer in the form of pouty-lipped Lana. Dubbed as the "Ghetto Nancy Sinatra", Lana struck my nerve (and I bet for some of you) into what introduced me to songs with metaphors of disconnect and detachment.

"Video Games" was relative to today's times. It had a chord progression and melody that lulled me to a pitstop of beauty rest and the like.

But "Born To Die" was tattooed in my mind during the days leading up to summer. It was weirdly cool and addictive to have "Born" as my and friends' Boracay theme song. My OFP photographer and friend Yuno would place this on REPEAT, resounding in our hotel room from the time we wake up til we doze off.

"Beat Down" and Iggy Azalea

I stumbled upon Aussie rapper Iggy Azalea while browsing for "Step Up 3D" songs. I saw a still from Steve Aoki's then new single "Beat Down" with a shot of her ponytail.

I played it and BOOM! I was instantly hooked to the heavy urban-trip-hop beat!
Aoki made Wynter Gordon an ice-melting sexbomb for "Ladi Dadi" and what "Beat Down" did to Azalea is just freakin' mad! Iggy makes Willow Smith go home with the 360-degree whip of her ponytail in the video! LOL

And thank goodness who ever plays this in VUDU, i love ya i wanna be wid ya!

Azealia Banks

I first heard her from Mugler's Menswear Fall 2011 fashion show, "212" was used as the song for the interestingly textured quasi-futuristic clothes the brand showcased. "Liqourice" came after, which threw me back to the mid-90s heydays of urban music, with marriages of urban glitz and glam.

She barks aggressive lines against lacquered beats; with phrases that are, as pitchfork.com calls it - "elegantly self-aggrandizing and enemy-deflating". The irony in her productions caught me. With "1991" catapulting my adoration for her, she is bombastic; she is boundary-busting.

Looking forward to her Paul Epworth-produced LP "Broke With Expensive Taste"!
