Lone Tree

I took this photograph in 2005 with my first DSLR, a Minolta Maxxum 7D, unfortunately not as a raw file. I had to lie on my belly in the snow to cut out background that I wanted to exclude. That, of course, made me a target for my playful dog and his hound friend.
I still like the photo, and today while trying another edit in Lightroom, I accidentally added the diagonal line which comes down from the left hand corner and then angles back to the tree. A cool mistake in my book.
Here is the picture without the lines, and slightly different rendition of the snow in the foreground, which has been trampled by the dogs. What I like best are the clouds and the hint of color in the late afternoon horizon:

My 13-year-old niece Katie came to visit this weekend. Armed with one of my SLR cameras, she went to town (so to speak) shooting for two days straight. What impressed me was that she took to photography (the camera and lenses) and the computer editing (Lightroom) like a pro. She took more than 800 pictures and edited them down to 60. She learned how to process raw files, and began to understand the basics of focal length and aperture. What fun it was to teach such an enthusiast!

Snowfall and trees

We have had virtually no snow all winter, so I have not been
moved to get the camera out, but that changed this afternoon.

October splendor

Mushroom Cloud

Mushroom Cloud" was the title my husband suggested for this photo. To me, this mushroom on the remains of an elm tree represents what happens in the fall: the dying away of the season's tender growth.

Of course, while autumn is the end of something, it also harkens the return of elements to the earth to be reborn in the spring, or in case of dead things, to be to be turned into elements that are used by the living. I remember when this elm was alive, but like most elms around here, it died young.

Dove

I set up my camera inside the patio door. I think this dove knew I was there because it kept looking over to the door and didn't really use the birdbath. I decided on black-and-white because the light was quite harsh even though it was early evening.

This photo comes from my days of shooting slides. It was taken with a 70-210 lens and an extension tube when I was learning how to shoot to create this kind of soft background.

White horse

On my way home from a visit with my blogger friend Salix, I saw this horse in a field with asters and golden rod. It looked so good, I had to stop and make some pictures. The challenge: the horse (he's was small, probably a pony) was curious and kept moving toward me. I said hello and gave him an apple, and then a few minutes later I was able to capture this scene.

September meadow scene

Normally, I shoot in the meadow in the early morning, but we had dinner early this evening, and I went to the meadow at around 6:30 p.m. I used a 70-300mm VR lens and a monopod. This was the first shot I got, and I love the autumnal mood it evokes.

Two monarchs

I went out to the meadow at dawn this morning, hoping for more sunrise pictures, but the conditions weren't good for that - no mist or atmosphere, just clouds and dull light.

So I shot some coneflowers, and then when I turned around to see where the sun was coming up, I saw these two monarch butterflies on a meadow blazing star flower. They had spent the night there, and because it was still cool, they stayed in place for a good long time - lucky for me.

I cropped this picture and added a curves adjustment after getting an informal critique from garden and landscape photographer Ian Adams. Which version do you prefer?
