“Lives Given, not Taken”

by Erich Bridges and Jerry Rankin
From Page 223
“ The pain is deep, the grief prolonged. We do not readily get over the abrupt loss of a colleague and a friend. The death of a son or daughter, husband, father or brother, wife, mother or sister, leaves an ache in the depth on one’s soul. The vibrant smile is gone; the hearty laugh is silent. The intimate sharing with a mentor and encourager has ceased. We cannot understand why one devoted to serving the Lord would have his or her ministry cut short or why the light of a testimony in a dark world would be extinguished.

From Lynn Green

In spite of our deep sense of loss, the Scriptures tell us, “Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints” (Psalm 116:15). In some providential way, our loss becomes gain to the Kingdom of God. Each person in these memorial pages took a step of risk and obedience to God’s leading in their lives. That step always demonstrates an abandonment to God, a removal of all previous conditions we might have tried to impose. When a life is truly available then we can be sure that God will never squander his most precious belongings.

She realised that there were things she had always wanted to do with her life, and so she started a Psychology degree, a life-long dream. Her plan was to get a Bachelor's degree and then go on to a Master's in Clinical Psychology. However, the summer after her first year, the cancer came back in full-force.

Joan Edwards

After completing her YWAM training school, Joan came to Thailand in 1982 from the UK. She was a widow with two grown sons and had such a heart to serve. She was a faithful office staff in Bangkok before moving to the Thai-Cambodian border to serve the Khmer refugees. She had such powerful, simple faith - if God said it - she believed it and held on with tenacity!!

On July 7, 2003, Howard Malmstadt, the co-founder of YWAM’s University of the Nations, went to be with the Lord. Howard was 81. A scientist of such renown that he was offered the presidency of a large USA university, Howard, at the age of 55, left his position at the University of Illinois to join YWAM. Although many of his friends, and even his wife, thought he was “delirious,” Howard became the main architect of the University of the Nations.

Rodney suddenly died in August 2002 only after deciding to return to full time missions. Rodney faithfully and lovingly served at YWAM Maui for a number of years. He was known as the "Hatian Creation" by his friends. Rodney was never afraid to be himself or to laugh at all that came his way. His infectious personality and dancing always made you smile. Rodney had a way of beliving in you and seeing your potential years beyond before you could see it yourself. Because of this Rodney stood by you through good and bad and was there with open arms when you needed it.

Vatana was born in Battambang, Cambodia in March 1988. His aunt raised him and his siblings. She told Vatana about Jesus and began to take him to church when he was a young boy. Vatana began to love God in a deep way. He also grew in his love for the lost, music, and soccer.

Dear all, 11 January 2009

Earlier this evening Kevin Darrough went to be with the Lord after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Linda and I were privileged to be with him shortly before he passed away, read some Scripture, and prayed with him. He was suffering intensely the last few days but now we know he is enjoying the saint's everlasting rest.

Josicleuton Lopes (Fofo)

Fofo served our base (YWAM Muizenberg) for almost a year as a cook.A sometimes
thankless job, and in this recession, it was an increasingly difficult
task to cook for numerous missionaries on a very tight budget. He
served because he had a desire to be a missionary to Africa, and
considered being a cook in a mission base a portal to his African
calling. Fofo had a joy of life, a heart for children in need, a great
sense of humour, and an almost child-like stubborness against protocols
or structures which would mute his generous and magnanimous spirit.
