Underscores(_s) Theme is a Free Starter WordPress Theme by Automattic, the company makes WordPress. So it’s a kind of a “official” starter Theme. Here is the description from ThemeShaper:

So, what’s so different about _s? Well, most importantly it’s that it will always be more or less in flux. It’ll be looked at again and again, always with an eye to the future of WordPress themes. Twenty Thirteen: The Next WordPress Default Theme Unveiled

The next default theme for WordPress, Twenty Thirteen WordPress theme, is available in the WordPress core now. Here is the demo site of Twenty Thirteen theme if you want to take a look.

Twenty Thirteen is quite different from the previous default themes for WordPress. This time they make it very colorful and better for single column blogs/websites. They have a focus on great support for post formats as well. While looking at the demo, I feel like looking at a Tumblr blog. Links, photos and blog posts mixed together. It’s not bad for me, the WordPress team is focusing back to blog rather than a universal CMS. But the design is definitely not for everyone.

Twenty Thirteen theme will be released in April with the launch of WordPress 3.6. If you want to try it out, you can download it from WordPress trunk from SVN or here after this post. But as I checked just now, they are making changes everyday, it’s not a good idea to install it for now.

You may have noticed there is an Update Services under Settings -> Writing Setting in your WordPress. When you read into the description, you will find it very interesting:

When you publish a new post, WordPress automatically notifies the following site update services. For more about this, see Update Services on the Codex.

According to the definition, this service will notify websites listed in that section, this should help us getting more traffic. But as my personal experience, I didn’t see any traffic from those websites. Maybe it’s because I don’t know how to figure it out. Anyway, as it’s here, I’d like to use it, why not, right? So I collected every ping service I can find, and added them to my WordPress blog. For now I have 129 ping service listed and I’m sharing it with you if you’re interested.

WordPress 3.4 “Green” Released

WordPress 3.4 “Green” Released:

WordPress 3.4 is here and out the door. We’ve dubbed this release “Green” in honor of guitarist Grant Green whose soulful simplicity has kept many of us company during this release.

This release includes significant improvements to theme customization, custom headers, Twitter embeds, and image captions — here’s a short clip with the highlights:

For Users

The biggest change in 3.4 is the theme customizer which allows you to play around with various looks and settings for your current theme or one you’re thinking about switching to without publishing those changes to the whole world. For themes that support it, you can change colors, backgrounds, and of course custom image headers. We have more planned for the customizer down the road.

Throughout the rest of the admin you’ll notice tweaks to make your everyday life easier. For example, if you have lots of themes we’ve made it quicker to browse them all at once without paging. We’ve made it possible to use images from your media library to populate custom headers, and for you to choose the height and width of your header images.

We’ve expanded our embed support to include tweets: just put a Twitter permalink on its own line in the post editor and we’ll turn it into a beautiful embedded Tweet. And finally, image captions have been improved to allow HTML, like links, in them.

For Developers

There are hundreds of under-the-hood improvements in this release, notably in the XML-RPC, themes, and custom header APIs, and significant performance improvements in WP_Query and the translation system. The Codex has a pretty good summary of the developer features, and you can always dive into Trac directly.

We’ve also put together a busy developer’s field guide to the new APIs in 3.4.

Movie Review: Alvin and the Chipmunks 3 : Chip-wrecked

Storyline

The third installment of Alvin and the Chipmunks, the new story is about the chipmunks got shipwrecked(chipwrecked) and try to survive on a desert island.

On the cruise

To be honest, the plot of this installment is not strict enough, especially for the part they are still on the cruise.

The dance between chipettes and three girls makes me feel embarrassed, neither the fight nor the dance is thoughtful. The whole scene is imposed on them to show off the dance. But the dance is also not good enough, well, it’s kinda too busy. A lot of moves and steps do not make the dance great, it needs to be slow down and add some memorable steps, and the camera should close up to the girls’ or chipettes’ bodies and faces at some points. And the three girls are kinda over acting, can’t blame them, it’s not easy to fight with chipmunks, I guess.

On the island

It gets better when they arrived on the island, I like the setting of Simon going wild, which makes Alvin understand how difficult he was before.

The chasing of the mango is rough, the reason of the chasing is not persuasive, feels like just wanted to show off the animations. It’s better to add a scene showing that they’re all too hungry to keep them sane.

The role of Zoe is not thoughtful as well. Sometimes she’s crazy talking with basketball, and suddenly she’s clear digging for treasures. Doesn’t make sense. I think they should add a scene Zoe regain her saneness, for example, when Simon gives the bracelet to Jeanette, Zoe opens up her eyes(close up shot).

Overall

The chipmunks are cute, their voices are special, which makes the songs special. But they should spend much more on the plot.

Only recommend to those who want to watch a movie with kids or too boring and can find a better one.

I recently come to a website, Techinline, they offer remote support software ONLINE. Which means they allow you to control your client’s computer via your browser, without install a software, but just a plugin. This is interesting, I tried it out right away, it’s better than I expected.

Here is how it works:

1. Client side: Ask your client to visit FixMe.it(nice domain), install the plugin for the browser, and then a client id will be generated. You gonna need this id.

2. Expert Side: You go to techinline.net/expert, login your account:

You need to install a plugin for expert functions as well:

And then you will see the expert page, enter the client id here for connection.

If connect succeeded, you and your client will both see a new page, here is your client’s page:

And this is your page:

You may notice there are several buttons in the middle, they are the main functions for expert. Let’s try View Remote Desktop to take a look at your client’s desktop.

After you clicked on the button, your client need to accept your request:

Then you can start to help your client, you will see the whole desktop with a control banner on the top. The color of the screen is lower down for better speed, but that’s not important. It’s smoother than I thought, well done.

As everything goes SaaS, it might be a trend that remote support software will go online. And Techinline is the first in the industry, as a pioneer, I think they’re doing a great job.

WordPress Complete Tutorial 08: WordPress Links

What is Links/Blogrolls

The last thing I want to talk about WordPress.com is: Links. You can see there are some other sections that I didn’t mentioned, like Polls, that’s because these sections are only available on WordPress.com, you won’t find them in your self-hosted WordPress. And they are very easy to understand, just go try out if you’re interested. Links are URLs on your blog that you want to share with your readers, for example, if you’re blogging about iPhone, you may like to put a link to Apple.com on our blog. Or mostly you can put a link to your friends’ blogs. We usually call blog links as Blogrolls.

Add New Links on WordPress.com

It’s very easy to deal with links on WordPress. Let’s go to the Admin Panel and click on Links section. Here you can find all your links on your blog. By default, WordPress will set up several links to websites related to WordPress. You can delete them if you don’t need them any more. Everything looks familiar here, right? It’s just the same as the Posts/Pages/Comments sections, so you know how to play with it. Let’s try to add a link to my original blog: ZackLive.com Click on Add New under the Links section. This is how we add a new link: Enter the information of the link:

Name: Link text to display
Web Address: Link URL
Description: One line description

Link category can be set under the Links section, or you can directly add a new category here by clicking on Add New Category, it’ll be just the same as creating a post category. Target defines how to get to the website of the link – open the link in a new widow or tab(_blank) or in the currant window or tab(_top & _none). The difference between _top and _none is that _top will break all frames(if there is any) and display the page as a top page. That’s all we need to set for a new link, if you don’t want others to see this link, you can check Keep this link private, and then click on Add Link.

Link Widget

Links will not be showed on our blog automatically, we need to add a Link Widget to our theme to display links. Go to Widgets under Appearance. We’ve talked about widgets in our earlier post. Find a widget call Links, drag and drop it to Sidebar, you can change the order of widgets. That’s all, now refresh the blog to see our new link.
