For the last few years I have had a Google Voice account. Well it started out as a Grand Central account, but Google purchased Grand Central a few years ago. The idea was simple. You get a phone number from Google and you would never need another phone number again. Much like email, you could just forward the phone number to any current phone you are using. No more worrying about having to “port” you phone number from carrier to carrier.

On top of that idea, they added some really cool features. Let’s start with the voice mail features. It will email you the voicemail and even transcribe it (though it seems that the transcribing is getting worse over the years, not better). The really cool thing here is you can use Google Voicemail with any cell phone (You do not have to use your Google voice phone number).

You can also have custom greetings for the people that call. So I could have play one greeting for my wife, another for clients, and even a third for that pesky sales person that calls every week. Any voicemail can easily be played, forwarded, or even downloaded from the website.

Using the Google Voice phone number gives some enhanced features. You can have the one phone number ring multiple phones (like 2 cell phones, 1 Cell and 1 home, etc). You can block calls (Callers go straight to voicemail) or even record calls and retrieve them online later.

Here is the basic rundown of the features:

Use with your existing number and get:

· Google voicemail: voicemail like email

· Voicemail transcription: read what your voicemail says

· Custom greetings: vary voicemail greetings by caller

· International calling: low cost calls to the world

· Notifications: read voicemail messages via email or SMS

· Share voicemails: forward, embed, or download voicemails

Add a Google number to get these additional features:

· One number: a single phone number that rings all your phones

· Free SMS: send, receive & store text messages online

· Block calls: send unwanted callers straight to voicemail

· Record calls: record phone calls and store them online

· Conference calls: join several people into a single call

· Screen callers: hear who is calling before you pick up

If this looks like something you would like, just head over to http://voice.google.com to learn more. It is an invite only service, but I have a few invites if someone wants to try it out (Just email support). I would recommend it to anyone for their home or cell phone. I would be very scared to use this for any kind of business phone.

We have spent the last 2-3 years looking at different phone vendors. Our goal was simple, we wanted an easy to use system that uses VOIP and offers easy remote access and integration with their data network.

You would not believe how many phone systems are out there. We looked at 3CX, Asterisk, TrixBox, Bizphone, NEC, Nortel, Shoretel, and all the other tel’s we could find.

Microsoft came out with their own phone system. Response Point seemed like the sure answer for us. It was true VOIP, we could use our current channels since it was from Microsoft, and it had a killer feature. It was voice controlled.

We got our demo and started playing with it. We did find some short coming, but the development team was aware of these issues and had plans to fix it. The problem came when Microsoft just about shutdown the Response Point project. Even now it is on a skeleton crew and no new features are planned. Bill Gates pet project now sits on hold due to the economy.

Back looking at systems, we find one that has promise. It had all the features we wanted, it was true VOIP, and it looked easy to manage. We thought for sure there must be something wrong.

We started looking deeper, Learning as much as we could about the company and the system. The more we learned, the more we liked what we saw. We got the demo unit and started putting it through some testing. The system is amazing; the integration with our computers is the best part. We see who is calling, can handle that call, all form our computer. Calling from any phone number on the screen; Easy. Recording a phone call; Scary easy. Getting all my Voicemail and faxes in my outlook (and on my smart phone); Again, Easy. It just seems to do it all. We had no trouble setting up a remote phone and using it just like the phones in our office.

Its official we found a VOIP phone system we could sell and support that has all the features we need. Jack went to South Carolina for a week of intense training on the system and we are now Certified XXXX. I you are in the market for a new phone system, you should really see a demo of this unit. It easily scales from 5-10 users to well over 1000 users (The proposed limit is 10,000 users in 128 different locations).

As Microsoft Partners, we will still sell and support Response Point where it’s a good fit. We are also looking at Allworx as another system that can provide a “Key System” feel. These other systems will mostly be for certain clients as we feel right now Zultys has the best solution and is priced competitively.

For years we have suggested to our clients that they use Windows Mobile devices only due to the extra fee’s BlackBerrys add to phones. You pay for the phone, Internet service, BES service, and then you need a License on your BES server (which must be installed, which is a project, which is even more money). Compare that to windows mobile and you need the phone and internet service. You can see where you save some big cost there. These savings didn’t stop many clients from still wanting to have a BlackBerry (that’s got to say something about either their phones or their marketing)

Well things have changed some. This week it was announced that the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express will now be FREE. You will still need to install it and get it setup, but now you will not be paying all the extra license fees. This can save you $100/user. BlackBerry’s do have some advantages over windows mobile and with the cost starting to come more inline picking between the two is a lot harder. If you want to learn more about the Free BES Express, check out the FAQ’s on BlackBerry’s Website

Zanacore has launched a new website. Over the course of this year we will be adding more of our products and services to the website. Most of 2009 was spent on our internal processes and getting our product line where we want it. 2010 will be about letting everyone know about all these new products and services and the website will be a big part of providing that information.

Be sure to check it out and let us know of any suggestions.
