Google's Search Engine Algorithm Update Panda 4.0 - What To Do To Keep Your High Website Position in Search Results

If you’re involved in the optimization of your website, then certainly you know that search engines regularly update and improve their search algorithms.

Back in May of this year, Matt Cutts, Google’s Webspam department head announced via Twitter the launch of Panda 4.0.

The Panda algorithm was designed for low-grade website identification and positioning below the search results. Google was vigilant in getting rid of spammy websites, unethical link building, and those that didn’t offer original, quality content. The first version of Panda was launched in February 2011 and was followed by about 25 algorithm updates.

Since 2013, Google officially stopped announcing changes to the algorithm because there were monthly updates that did not result in a rapid change of position in search results. But Panda 4.0 was an exception because this update instantly affected website position for many sites in search results.

For example, literally overnight traffic to globally recognized and highly visited websites like ask.com and eBay dropped significantly.

What do you do so the new Panda algorithm does not affect your website?

At the moment it is too early to draw conclusions, but it is already clear what should be done to keep the top position in search results:

• Post only unique, quality content. Link to extraneous articles and do not copy verbatim from other websites.
If you think that Google will not be able to recognize your website by the quality of the content, you are mistaken. The new algorithm is designed to identify low-quality information. How does Google do it? They have algorithms that can judge the content of the page, for example, by how interesting it is for visitors, makes reference to other quality articles, or if visitors share content on social networks, etc. It can also determine if published content is relevant to the theme of the website.

• Make it convenient and easy for users to understand the structure of the website. Is your website layout easy to navigate? Does the website have a lot of advertising and links to other pages or banner ads?

• Keep updated website content updated. Pages with quality content that is regularly updated and supplemented by useful information get higher positions in search results.

• Place only quality backlinks. Ensure that outbound links are to only quality resources with a large number of visitors and pages matching your website's content.

3 Ways to Sell Directly With Your Newsletter

There’s an old adage in the Internet marketing world that says, “The money is in the list.” The idea is that the more subscribers you get to your newsletter, the higher your chances of selling and making money with that list of subscribers. That idea worked in the old days of online business and it still continues to work today.

Why is that?

When people give you their email address in the form on your website, they’re expecting to stay updated on your business and receive valuable information from you whether it’s special coupons or helpful articles and tips. It’s safe to say that they trust you, and the more consistent you are with sending out a newsletter, the more people will remember your business. You begin to build a relationship with your subscribers and then become recognized as an authority in your industry.

The key here is consistency when sending out your newsletter. At the very least try to send one out once a month. You can’t send out a newsletter two times and then just quit because nobody bought from you. Remember that marketing your business is an ongoing task. People may not always buy from you, but at least they’ll remember you when it’s time to purchase what you offer.

So how do you go about selling directly with your newsletter?

1. Have a featured product/service of the month. Build the theme of your newsletter around a particular product/service. For example, if you sell water bottles you can write an article about summer time being around the corner and the importance of staying hydrated while on-the-go. You could also include little-known facts, trivia, or statistics about water.

2. Have a “secret” sale exclusively for subscribers. One way you can increase your subscriber list is to let people know that they will receive exclusive notice of special sales. Make sure that your sale is held for a limited time only to encourage people to buy right away.

3. Partner with other businesses and sell their products/services to your list. You could affiliate with companies that complement your business and make a commission from each sale. For example, if you’re a realtor you could partner with a furniture store or an interior designer and mention them in your newsletter. Many big companies like Amazon, Overstock, and Zappos have affiliate programs that you can sign up for and sell the products they offer.

Here are 5 things you should have for a successful ecommerce website that converts shoppers into buyers:

1. Simple design
Don’t overwhelm shoppers with too much information on one page. Keep your product descriptions short and sweet, but if it is necessary to provide further details, use tabs with headings to organize information into bite-size chunks.

An example of this is the product page for gud’s Mango Moonbreeze body wash. The page is simple, which allows the shopper to just focus on the product without being distracted by unnecessary information. At the bottom you’ll see a box with tabs for customer Reviews, Ingredients, and “How to Use It” if a shopper does want more information.

2. Call to action
In regular life people don’t want to be told what to do, but shopping online is a different story. People sometimes need a little nudge or a big bright button so they know what to do to make a purchase or how to proceed in order to business with you. Calls to action can include phrases like “Add to cart”, “Buy now”, or “Get more information”. I recommend reading this article by Cameron Chapman about call to action buttons to get a better idea on how to incorporate them into the design of your site.

3. Reviews
People are more likely to purchase products based on a recommendation, especially if that recommendation is from a family or friend. However, people also like to see other buyers’ experiences with your products. You can post reviews of your products on your blog, on social media, or right on your website. If you’ve ever visited Amazon.com, you know that there is a whole section dedicated to reviews for each product. I don’t know about you, but I spend time reading through the reviews before I decide whether or not to make a purchase.

Reviews also give you an opportunity to improve products or product offerings. If there is an item that is getting poor reviews, maybe you can find a vendor who offers something similar with better quality.

4. Responsive design
In a previous post I mentioned the importance of responsive design and that anaZana now offers responsive design websites. With so many people shopping via their tablets or mobile phone nowadays, your site needs to be able to adapt to each user and provide a very seamless shopping experience.

5. Lead capture form

anaZana is a multinational company with the parent company based in the U.S. and a subsidiary company in Latvia, so it's great to see how much the company has grown in popularity. Globally, anaZana is currently ranked at 153,847 and in the U.S. the company is ranked at 81,673.

For those of you who don't know, Alexa.com is a popular site where you can find information and statistics about websites, including traffic ranking, visitor engagement, and audience demographics. As an ecommerce site owner, these types of statistics is important to give you an idea of where potential customers come from. If you have an upgraded account, you can see more detailed statistics and learn more about how your site compares to competitor websites.

Many marketers and advertisers also use the Alexa toolbar to get an idea on how popular a site is globally and by country in terms of traffic. For global traffic rank, Alexa's calculation consists of using a combination of the estimated average daily unique visitors to the site and the estimated number of pageviews on the site over the past 3 months. The Alexa rank by country is calculated using a combination of the estimated average daily unique visitors to a site and the estimated number of pageviews on that site from users in that country over the past month.

Do keep in mind that Alexa ranking has nothing to do with Google page ranking, which is a totally different measuring tool for websites.

How to Market Your Ecommerce Site in 15 Minutes a Day

In talking with many solopreneurs and small business owners, I’ve learned that one of the biggest challenges they face is having the time to market their business. They’re busy fulfilling orders, working with clients and customers, networking, and other activities related to their business, so oftentimes the marketing part of their business gets put on the backburner.

Besides taking care of customers, marketing is one of the most important things you can do to increase traffic and revenue for your business. It’s not a one-and-done type of activity. Marketing is something that should be done consistently and everyday, even if your business is busy. For time-strapped ecommerce business owners, you can still carve out 15 minutes a day for marketing and have fun doing it.

The first step is to brainstorm and decide what marketing activities you will do each day. Find out where your target market hangs out online and make a list of the different places you will focus on.

Next, create a schedule of when you will do each marketing activity. Make sure to put it on your calendar and To Do list for each day. When it’s marketing time, turn off your phone, turn off the TV, and stay focused during those 15 minutes. And when you’re online, stay away from bright shiny objects that will try to distract you.

I would focus on one specific marketing area each day. For example, one day you focus on social media, the next day you focus on participating in LinkedIn groups, and another day you post on your blog. Have a plan and know exactly what you’re going to do for each day. If you are participating in social media marketing such as Facebook and Twitter, you can save time by scheduling posts throughout the day so you don’t have to login every few hours and get distracted.

15 minutes a day may not seem like much, but all those little things you do each day eventually add up. They key thing is to stay focused!
