Life Drawing : After 6 months, no real improvement ! - Shiraz

Hi there,

I paid a lot of attention to your "life drawing" posts.

I am a 3d artist and I decided to improve my drawing skills a while ago. I am highly interested in life drawing and I am really really, but really- bad at it. I just can't make it look right. I do not see any progress in my drawings too and I find it to be very frustrating.

Unfortunately, I do not draw well (enough) in order to give you any advice regarding your drawings. However, I can refer you to some information that I've found very useful to me;

I recommend the book "Force: the key to capturing life through Drawing" by Mike Mattesi. My drawings are usually very stiff and you can tell I pay too much attention to the contour and the proportions of the body. However, this book teaches you how to think in the terms of energy- like drawing what the model is doing and what is the direction of the force in the body. The results are very dynamic drawings- very "alive". It is amazing what the author can draw with just a few lines.

Also, I recommend reading Glenn Vilppu's lectures on awn.com ("Vilppu's drawing how to")- at least the first 2 lectures: "never underestimate the power of life drawing" and "vilppu drawing online: Gesture".

I'm really not sure how many people outside of us bloggers and those more techy inclined actually use RSS even if they know what it means - a shame, but I think people will keep on relying on bookmarks and Google to visit their favourite sites.

This post is great, it brings back so many memories from when I was a kid with my Amiga A500, which was eventually replaced by a shiny new A1200.

Civilization remains on of my favourites along with Monkey Island and Speedball 2. I'd forgotten all about Moonstone and Deuteros - both classic games I think - don't remember them too well now tho!

My Amiga 500 finally booted for the last time a few years ago. I must have played FA/18 Interceptor for hundreds of hours. I remember the Cinemaware TV Sports games as well, they were so much fun.

i see improvement! its in the proportions and confidence of the lines. having such a heavy schedule doesnt allow too much relaxation time for drawing so dont be too hard on yourself. besides, art is in the eye of the beholder

Wow so much memories, playing for hours in front of my A500. I remembered from the video :
Cannon Fodder, Pinball dreams,Speedball, Lemmings, Another World, Flashback, Lotus, Superfrog, Dune, Rick Dangerous, North vs South (soo fun !), Bomberman, IK+, Bust a Move, Zool, Shadow of the beast, One step beyond, Desert strike (that's the one you're looking for Lurch at 9m22s), Prince of persia (of course !), Xenon II

can't seem to remember the one with the owl, and the one with a bee, if someone has any hints...

My uncle had one of these first... used to go round to play on it all the time. Dungeon Master... sooooo many hours playing it, shadow of the beast and heimdall... greta games, but remember them being real hard. populous lemmings cannon fodder. my god the times i had!!

What is that first music track on the first video? I like it!

I couldn't afford an Amiga when they came available, and stuck with my C-64 until 1991 or so, when I shifted to an IBM clone. But they had many of the same games - and my buddy had an Amiga - so I had the best of both worlds.

I remembered most of the games (i would say about 80%), even some i forgot.... too bad the amiga got lost throught the times... mostly by game developers....
