You probably remember when I hacked my Palm Pre into a WiFi router when it came out months ago. Well, I decided to do the same thing on my Nexus One too!

I know I mentioned this Nexus One Wifi hack couple weeks back but didn’t try it myself and found that instructions out there are very lacking so I made my own howto guide on how to hack(tether) your Nexus One into a WiFi router!

The procedure is pretty safe and there’s very little chance you will brick your phone but it will void your warranty plus make your Nexus One into a super Nexus One so proceed at your risk.

And btw, this WiFi tethering app is so much better than any paid apps you will get out there such as PDAnet so highly recommended and it’s FREE.

Nexus One Hack – How to Install Cyanogen Mod on your Nexus One!

Sorry for lack of updates folks, I have been immersing myself in some crazy Nexus One mods over the last couple days, bearing getting any sleep.

Basically, I was trying to get the Android WiFi Tether app working, which requires you to root your Nexus One. In the process, I just decided to install the Cyanogen Mod (which is basically an “enhanced” Nexus One Android OS) while I am at it.

After installing Cyanogen Mod on my Nexus One, I was rather surprised to find that my phone seems to run zippier plus getting better signals.

Anyways, I got both USB and WiFi tether to work on my Nexus One plus the new recovery image by Amon_RA user at xda-developers forum does a whole lot of goodies such as ability to backup/restore a whole OS, which means you can install various different ROMS without worrying about breaking your Nexus One.

Finally, I have 2 smartphones that can tether both USB and WiFi plus I’ve got an extra USB broadband dongle. (Also see my post on how to make use of multiple WiFi hotspots when you are in remote locations.)

Do I recommend everyone who has a Nexus One to install Cyanogen mod?

Heck ya, this mod will make your Nexus One a “super” Nexus One. Plus, you get to decide when your phone updates. Updates are actually “quicker” than the stock Nexus One from Google so I don’t see why you wouldn’t install this mod.

Based on playing around a bit, unless you “overclock” your Nexus One too much or do something, this mod isn’t going to brick you phone, unlike what people who don’t know are saying. Of course, it’s going to break your warranty but really, you need to take a chance sometime in life.

Anyways, I’ve got the whole step-by-step directions on how to install the Cyanogen Mod to your Nexus One. I made my HOWTO guide because I felt the guides out there are lacking for people who just started messing with Android, me. Also, you will need to unlock your Nexus One so let the hacking begin, I hope.

I tried to include a lot of stuff that beginners (me) would overlook such as even installing the Android SDK and USB drivers, etc…etc…

Thanks to @Cyanogen and everyone who has contributed to this cool mod, I am lovin’ it!

P.S. Oh yeah, I’ve already installed the new HTC Desire ROM on my Nexus One and switching back and forth between the Cyanogen, I will have a step-by-step guide for that too soon.

Intel WiFi Link 1000 Not Working? Try Updating Driver Manually!

Recently, I’ve noticed that my Intel WiFi Link 1000 is not picking up some WiFi signals or is not as good as other WiFi adaptors I have. The problem exists with old drivers.

I went to Intel’s support site and downloaded the latest version of the Intel WiFI Link 1000.

After updating to the latest driver, my Intel WiFi Link 1000 works flawless!

This should be the case on many other Intel WiFi chipsets so make sure to check if your WiFi driver is the latest one, otherwise you might be struggling on crappy driver.

And yeah, Windows 7 doesn’t update this automatically so you need to update the drive manually.

Now I am picking up more WiFi signals and no more jammed WiFi connections or only connect to some WiFi. Yey!

WiFi Hack – How to Connect Multiple Mobile/Cellular WiFi Connections!

Right now as I write this blog post, I am uploading a 200MB video to YouTube on my virtual machine Windows XP(via USB Broadband) while using my main OS Windows 7 for the blog post (via Palm Pre USB Tether).

Now I officially carry three different mobile WiFi hotspot devices including a regular Sprint USB Broadband card, a USB/WiFi tethered Palm Pre, and a USB/WiFi tethered Nexus One.

So why so many devices?

I am a little frantic about this very website going down so I need to make sure I am on at least two different networks plus I need a backup mobile internet just in case something happens. (I’ve also realized that having two smartphones lead to longer back-up devices for mobile surfing. Now, I never run out of batteries.)

While playing with my multiple options at my parent’s house where their DSL is bad, I figured out a way to maximize my mobile WiFi connections by using a virtual machine such as VMWare.

Basically this is how it works:

1. I connect my Palm Pre/Nexus one to my main OS Windows 7 with either USB or WiFi tethering.

2. Then I connect my USB Broadband modem to my Windows XP virtual machine running on VMPlayer.

*Note: You can also try different combos such as connecting USB Broadband to your main OS then connecting USB tethering to your virtual machine. One thing though, virtual machines don’t have WiFi by default so keep that in mind.

The reason why I use this setup is because sometimes I need to upload a huge YouTube video and while I do that, I can’t do anything else on my computer.

By having my virtual machine hooked up into an extra mobile cellular WiFi, now I can upload YouTube videos and still enjoy the full efficiency of my smartphone tethering.

Also, you can even open up more virtual machines to hook up more mobile WiFi devices. I won’t really need to do that but just so you know. (e.g. If you are uploading a lot of video files, then you can have multiple virtual machines uploading a file each and distribute load among your mobile hotspot devices)

Of course, I wish there was some way to actually use the power of all three mobile devices I have into just one OS, then I could effectively use 3 times the download/upload speeds, which could rival a 4G connection. Well, I am sure there’s a way to do that, that’s my next goal.

P.S. Oh yeah, I just finished writing one of the first blog posts on how to unlock your Nexus One. Over the next couple days, I should have a full step-by-step guide on how to install Cyanogen rom on your Nexus One and also install the Android WiFi tethering app. I know a lot of you can do that already but for those of you who are not so computer-literate, I will make a more easier/detailed guide you can follow at NexusOneHacks.net.

DIY Pixel Qi Sunlight-proof LCDs coming soon!

The news of the week is that Pixel Qi, manufacturer of sunlight-proof LCDs, is going to be releasing DIY LCD replacement kits that will allow your laptop to use much less power (allowing your laptop to run 20-30% longer) plus the LCDs themselves work well in bright sunlight.

The last time I used my netbook in bright sunlight was at the zoo couple months back and I have to say, you would seriously need something like a DIY Pixel Qi LCD kit replacement if you like the outdoors.

Of course, I think it’s all a bad idea to be using computer outdoors (unless you have to) but the battery savings of the new DIY LCD kit will bring new battery life to your laptop/netbook.

My Eee PC 1000HE netbook currently gets good 8 hours but with this upgrade it should get another 2 hours no problem while my ASUS UL30Vt should get a good 7 hours from its regular 5 hours.

Right now, it seems like these Pixel Qi kits will only be available for 10.1″ LCDs, so my netbook will be able to get the upgrade while my other laptops must wait.

Whatever the case, Pixel Qi seems to be on the right track, perhaps laptops/netbooks in the future will come equipped with this technology for prolonged battery life, I hope.

Also, these kits are easy enough to install that 11-year olds are making a business out of it in rural Nigeria plus I can attest to the fact that replacing LCDs on laptops/netbooks is pretty easy to do.

This is really exciting news because I think in couple years we will have LCDs that use much less power but much brighter at fractions of the cost. Aren’t we lucky enough to be born during the tech boom? I bet you are.

Well, I am gonna go play with my new Cynogen Nexus One mod, it’s freakin’ awesome! I will have a blog post about that soon too. Btw, I got my Nexus One USB/WiFi tether to work, yey I got now 3 devices that can tether my laptop, the USB, Palm Pre, and Nexus One.

Think of a battery as a small power plant that converts chemical energy through a reaction into electrical energy. First of all there is the container (1). This is a steel cylinder housing the cell’s ingredients.

Then you insert the positive element of the chemical reaction, which is a mix of finely ground Manganese dioxide mixed with conductors (like Carbon) which carry a naturally occurring electrical charge. This is called the cathode, and it is molded inside the empty wall of the container (2).

A separator paper is inserted to keep the cathode from touching the anode (3).

The anode, which carries a negative electrical charge – powdered zinc metal and potassium hydroxide – is put into the container (4) and a brass pin, which forms the negative current collector, is inserted into the battery (5).

The chemical reaction starts when you insert a battery into a circuit (6). Most chemical reactions produce energy in the form of heat, but by confining the chemicals inside the container, the battery produces power.

The brass pin (collector) within the battery conducts the electric current out of the battery to an external circuit such as the contact points on a flashlight bulb (7).

As the battery is used, the available manganese dioxide depletes and becomes less and less active as a cell cathode (8).

The design team at Art Lebedev have come up with this interesting digital clock called the Sementus it in concept form only, maybe there is the possibility that eventually a manufacturer might pick it up and bring it to the market.

The clock has the look of the digital clocks or those old fashioned clocks that could be found at stations and airports etc.

The difference with this clock is that it is made up with spinning hands rather than a LED or other digital display; it is very interesting when it is working but being a concept design, it is probably best not to get too excited over it.

Hard Disk DIY – How to Recover Your Hard Disk Data!

About 6 months back, I accidentally deleted all my files off one of my web servers. What happened was that I tried to mount an old hard disk to my new web server but accidentally used the linux format command while following some instructions online.

Of course, it happened way too quickly and there was no way to recover my data easily because the old hard disk was also on the brink of failing, which was the reason why there was a new web server in the first place.

I am no novice to these happenings though, when I got my first 386-DX 25Mhz computer back in 1989, I promptly deleted the entire hard disk while playing with MS-DOS on the first day I got the computer. (Btw, that’s how I got started with computers with the command “format”. I’ve probably did more wrong things with a computer than most people, hence learned a lot.)

Nevermind my bad experiences with hard disks but let me show you some ways you can recover your lost data.

What actually happens when you delete data from your hard disk

When you actually delete files from your hard disk on your computer (regardless of operating system used), you are not actually “deleting” the data, the hard disk still contains data, just filenames pointing to the data are deleted. In essence, a good hard disk hacker can easily retrieve your old data even if you delete them. One way to permanently delete your files is to overwrite them with new data or use open-source software like DBAN to completely wipe out everything on your hard disk, including filesystem information. DBAN also works great on Windows Vista/7 systems that have trouble with Windows XP installations.

FREE Open Source Hard Disk Recovery Solution

TestDisk is an open-source, free program you can use to recover your lost data, those specifically lost because you accidentally deleted them or formatted your hard drive. TestDisk isn’t exactly easy to use and it’s highly recommended that you have some good computer skills before taking on the task yourself. But TestDisk can be used under most operating systems including Windows, linux, and MacOS so it could be your life saver. In my experience, TestDisk failed to recover my data plus it’s really slow. If time isn’t your concern, it might work.

iPad will not have iPhone Tethering according to Steve Jobs!

Perhaps money is too good for Apple and AT&T, Steve Job’s official word on iPhone tethering the iPad is a simple, “no”.

Well, the wi-fi version of the iPad is poised to hit store shelves on April 3, and given that a large number of interested purchasers for the device presumably own iPhones, it’s only natural to wonder if AT&T will enable users to tether their iPhones to the iPad. Now seeing as how a wi-fi version of the iPad will soon be accompanied by a 3G equipped iPad with service supplied exclusively by AT&T, there’s really no reason why AT&T would permit iPad tethering when it can make some extra cash with month to month 3G contracts on the 3G enabled iPad.

Of course, let’s not forget AT&T is charging multiple times for the things they should be only charging once.
For example, iPad will have 3G connection, provided users pay “separately” for the service. There will be a WiFi-only version, which I should be able to tether using my Sprint Palm Pre, or even my Nexus One.

And iPhone users can also do it too using PDANet.

The point is, all the consumers who can’t even install an app (or doesn’t know about it) will get screwed, paying 3 times for their 3G service, once for an iPhone, once for their 3G modem, and once more for an iPad when all this could be solved with iPhone tether.

I guess it’s not a big deal since people can use PDANet or use other methods of wifi tethering. But the point remains that AT&T is still clearly being “evil” by charging customers more than they should.

So what?

Let’s start a war, let’s start boycotting all AT&T services. I have, it’s been 3 years since I have purchased any AT&T products. Unless consumers start doing something about it, we are all going to be treated like bunch of guinea pigs that can’t think for ourselves.

Seriously, do you like being “owned” by AT&T as an iPhone user? I bet you don’t, the only way to make AT&T to change is for you to step up and start DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

There, I did something about it by writing this blog post and other great hideous posts outlining what is wrong with AT&T, I just need your help to get this ball rollin’

All I want you to do is this, just one tweet or even tell your friend how much AT&T sucks because they make you pay for every little thing. You can still like Apple, I like Apple too but AT&T? That’s something I get peeved about. I am not even a customer of AT&T but I just hate what they are doing to people, screwing them in the a**. There, I said it, someone has to speak the truth around here.

Hard Disk Hack – How to Make Strobeshnik Hard Disk Clock when Hard Disk Recovery is Impossible!

We all have those times when hard disk recovery is simply impossible, your data is probably lost forever and before you know that hard disk might be heading to the trash bin.

But why not recycle it into a hard disk clock? We have features a ton of great hard disk clocks before, here’s another one named Strobeshnik from Russia made with a custom AVR controller, motor controller, and LEDs.

Strobeshnik uses stroboscopic effect to create the illusion of persistent numeric display. The hard drive platter has 10 digits, colon and dash marks, cut all the way through it. Behind the platter, in the HDD chassis, there is a PCB with groups of diffused LED’s. Groups of LED’s in each character position can be strobed independently at any given time. By careful timing of the light strobes, an illusion of still-standing numbers can be created.

Schematics, Eagle files, and source code for AVR are provided free so you might be able to easily replicate this DIY hard disk clock.

And don’t forget to watch the video as this Strobeshnik Hard Disk Clock certainly factors in the “wow” factor. Bravo!

Here’s a rather interesting hack where an old color laser printer (no longer in use) is converted into a paper shredder by taking a strip-cut paper shredder and sticking it where the paper usually comes out.

This might work well in situations where you need to keep the printer for yearly assets taxes while making it somewhat useful.

Also, don’t forget to read up on how to dismantle your laser printer, you never know if you would ever need it.

Alarm DIY – How to Make a Time-Delayed Door Alarm!

For those of you who have a tendency to leave your door/gate open for whatever reason, you can get a time-delayed door alarm such as this wireless one from GE.

Of course, you can always build yourself one with a bit of soldering and parts from your local Radio Shack. You can follow the directions here on how to make your own time-delayed door alarm using a door sensor, 555 timer chips, piezo, and small parts.

Palm Pre WebOS 1.4 update brings you video to the Palm Pres out there. It works rather flawless I guess and I might have to try taking more videos with it soon.

What I like most is that the Palm Pre’s 3G connection is so fast and you can upload your video directly to YouTube pretty darn fast.
