I have seen a ton of great ways to open doors when you lock yourself out but this one involves using your head and some floss. Not a bad idea if you can access the door top and bottom. Also read up on how to make a bump key.

now what you want to do is push the cable underneath the door a little ways. and then gently pull on the floss. you’ll want to go slowly so you don’t break the floss. but pull on it till you think the cable is about where the doorknob is and try to hook it over the doorknob. this may take a few minutes but eventually you should be able to hook the doorknob.

I’ve always found that DSLR auto-trigger can be rather expensive for no apparent reason other than camera makers are over-charging for accessories. Well, you don’t have to deal with that anymore if you want to build yourself a nifty laser trigger for your DSLR. This could possibly be better than radio-controlled ones, who knows?

I am sure even if you don’t make a laser trigger, you could probably build a cheap radio-trigger by applying the DSLR trigger basics outlined here.

There are a few different ways you can use the Arduino to trigger the camera – I considered using a relay, but the problem is that even very fast relays are quite slow, so I decided to use a transistor instead:

Yes it has finally happened, an entire design team has got together and redesigned the cardboard box, but not for the homeless people to have somewhere safe and secure to sleep, oh no! This design makes the humble cardboard box into a suite.

Each box, sorry I mean suite, comes with a fluffy pillow, LED’s and cardboard artwork on the walls! Unfortunately it appears that the designers have either made is mistake with their measurements or there is just a serious design flaw as only the upper body fits into the suite, no it is a box!

More or less everything has some sort of battery inside and yet even with chargeable batteries the actual act of physically putting the batteries into the charger and then visa versa can be a real pain, which is why some modern gadgets just end up in pile somewhere.

But hang on, following a competition to find run by the NYC based design house Pensa called the Greener Gadgets Design Competition, this design came to light.

It will charge any rechargeable battery including AAA, AA, C and D. All the consumers has to do is drop the batteries into the charger and it will sort them out by size and begin charging them, once completed the batteries a popped out the side.

You know, I didn’t realize how simple it is to make a self-portrait camera. It’s very simple, just attach a small mirror!

Simple and brilliant!

When I thought about how many pictures I have taken of myself while holding the camera at arms length, I realized that a feature that would allow you to see what you’re shooting would actually be pretty darn useful.

The mirror shows exactly what’s in the center of the photo, so as long as I can see a nose or an eye in the mirror when taking a self portrait, I can be pretty sure that the photo will come out well situated. Bye bye half-head self portrait photos!

Binary numbers are the utmost basics of computers. In essence, every image, file, or anything on your computer can be translated into 0s and 1s.

So what are these binary numbers and how do you read them?

Well, binary numbers are basically numbers based on zeros and ones instead of regular 0 through 9 numbers.

For example, here’s a binary number:

01010

You always count from the right.

The first 0 from the right can be either 0 or 1. (in this case it’s 0)

The second 1 from the right can be either 0 or 2. (in this case it’s 2)

The third 0 from the right can be either 0 or 4 (in this case it’s 0)

The fourth 1 from the right can be either 0 or 8 (in this case it’s

The fifth 0 from the right can be either 0 or 16 (in this case it’s 0)

As you can see every binary number is multiplied by 2 from the right to left.

If it’s a 1, you add the large number else it stays at zero.

So 01010 = 2+8=16.

Or you can also write as 1010.

Umbrellas can be great items to hack them into interesting LED objects such as this LED DIY which involves the author attaching/controlling LEDs on the umbrella.

I think this could possibly great way to make special effects, perhaps very useful for light painting.

Anyone undertaking this project should have access to standard soldering tools — pliers, diagonal cutters, wire cutters and strippers, soldering iron and solder, multimeter — and have experiencing working with the Arduino. The Arduino setup is not difficult and a program including several different animations of the LEDs is included in this instructible.

It is not a great time when the alarm goes off, it wakes you up, it is normally dark and if you are anything like me the clock normally ends up on the floor which makes it even harder to find and turn off.

So it’s great to find this is motion sensitive alarm clock, once it goes off all you need to do is wave your hand or any other part of your anatomy and that should be enough to turn the alarm off.

It seems that we humans will never realise that by building a robot army could spell the end of the human race, there are so many stories and films that predict this potential timeline.

So what is the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) planning instead, they want to create a biological life form that has been created by taking away the random evolutionary changes and limits to produce being that lives forever and obeys orders.

This is called BioDesign and DARPA are pouring in $6 million this year, plus a further $20 million into synthetic biology and finally a payment of $7.5 million into the study of editing genomes.

This sounds bad, doesn’t it? Have we not seen this somewhere before.

When you walk around the city streets do you notice the dust and dirt that get into your clothing, hair and even into your mouth, some of these particles could be harmful especially if they contain fumes from vehicles etc?

However there is a clothing range that can help you tell if these particles are harmful, that has been designed by Genevieve Mateyko and Pamela Troyer who are two industrial design students that study at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design.

The clothing uses sensors and alerts to let the wearer know if the surrounding atmosphere is contaminated with toxic fumes etc.

Here is a great idea from Beste Miray Dogan a graphic designer, currently based in Istanbul, Turkey, they use Google Maps or any other mapping service to produce a sheet of paper that can be folded and made into an envelope.

Once sent, the recipient opens the letter the find that inside has the address and map from where the letter originated from. It is great from mail shots, marketing and of course change of address.

This might not be best advert for an airship or indeed future travel by airship, but as an experiment it does actually show that the when it comes to travel anything is possible and the more obscure the idea the easier it seems to get the message across.

This airship is controlled by a group of people located in another part of the building; they control the airships direction through making various movements of the body.

It is the idea of a group of students from the Simon Fraser University’s School of Interactive Arts and Technology (SIAT); they have named it weBlimp, probably because of the cameras and sound equipment in one room monitor the movements of the students and transfer the data to the controls.

TwitList Launched! – User Recommended Twitter Lists!

Well, finally I launched a new website. This one is called TwitList, actually the domain is TwitLi.st to be exact.

TwitLi.st is a site for Twitter users who want to recommend their Twitter Lists to others. For example, I have a good blogger list, I can recommend it to TwitLi.st.

What does it do?

Basically, it’s a Twitter list recommendation engine. Whoever’s list gets most recommended, will show up higher under the category. There’s currently about 50 categories made but it’s going to get crazier as more people recommend new Twitter Lists into new categories (or tags).

I’ve put in all kinds of crazy hours into this project, hence I haven’t had much time to blog nor eat. I am actually on the brink of going crazy actually because my mind is filled with a lot of PHP and Javascript code. Does that ever happen to you?

I haven’t really made a site like this since last year when I launched StumbleTweets.com. Honestly, the reason I haven’t been promoting StumbleTweets as much is because I didn’t build it right. What I mean is that I didn’t set up the MySQL database structure right so when it got filled up with a lot of data, the site just slowed down. I didn’t want to keep promoting something that wasn’t going to work in the end. Eventually I will re-haul that site too but I like pushing new projects, that’s just my personality.

Anyways, TwitLi.st is my new baby. If you are a Twitter addict, you should recommend couple Twitter lists for me as we are just getting started and we need more lists!

My future plan is to turn TwitLi.st into a Twitter List search engine. Well, I need more recommendations first.

I haven’t really been stressed out this much in a long time and I haven’t really coded in about a year either. My head is just spinning everyday and today I just kinda broke down so. I am gonna take some rest before I work on the site again but you can use it because it’s working now. I think seriously I need to get back to blogging, it’s more relaxing. Why am I pushing myself so hard when I could be playing golf? Only God knows why.

Captain Kirks Chair

How many people have imaged themselves sitting in Captain Kirk’s chair, well maybe you don’t have to imagine anymore as this is a full time replica of the captains chair on the USS Enterprise.

It is from the original design by Matt Jefferies who worked on the show from 1966 to 1969; this is a limited edition of around 1,700.

The buttons on the chair actually produce authentic sounds from the series.

Features of the Authentic James T. Kirk Captain’s Chair:

A press of the former yellow alert button (located at the front of the right armrest) produces one of nine original sound samples from the series, including the entirety of the famous prologue: “Space… the final frontier…” spoken by William Shatner. Other samples include “Kirk to Engineering… Mr. Scott, report!,” “Position report Spock?” and more. Seven sound effects are produced by activating the former red alert button, including the classic intercom hail, phaser and photon torpedo sounds–even the ambient background bridge noises. The chair includes various toggle switches, knobs, and buttons from the series that invoked the jettison of pods and activated the main view screen. All sounds are produced from a single speaker built into the left armrest. The chair’s platform is made of wood surrounding a steel frame. The back and seat are made from leather, braced on either side by two oak arm rests; the chair swivels 360°. Plugs into AC. 41″ H x 42″ W x 39″ D. (75 lbs.)

Captain Kirks Chair

If you have an interest in engine or anything mechanical then surely this is the perfect thing to have on your desk, it is a V twin engine scaled down to table top size.

It actually works all you need to do is fill the tank with butane and crank it up, its smooth function will run at around 1,500 rpm, and is really going to annoy people.

Personally I would prefer to have a nice full sized V8, now that would be classy!

The features of the desktop V twin engine:

After filling its reservoir with butane (commonly available at drug stores), the engine is started by turning its solid brass flywheel. Its piezo magneto attaches to a timing disc that is precisely calibrated to send an electrical impulse to the two spark plugs that ignite the fuel within each cylinder. The individual movements of the valve rods, crosshead, and crankshafts are clearly visible at lower revolutions, and its efficient puttering equals the noise output of a kitchen blender. With ink cartridges costing the earth, it seems a shame to actually throw them away when they are empty, well it seems that some people don’t as they collect them up and make great things out them.

Like these empty Epson ink cartridges, they have been cleaned, drilled and then a lighting fixture is placed into it.

Of course you don’t have to make these for yourself, as they are available on Etsy, prices start at $30 for a single lamp, $45 for the four box version and as for the larger chandelier design that is going to cost $150.

Paperless and inkless printing

Printer ink can work out very expensive, paper is not so expensive but is a waste of a valuable resource, so maybe this is where the PrePeat printer system comes in!

This new system does not use paper or ink, the user just feeds a clear sheet of heat sensitive plastic, it is the heat generated through the printer leaves an image on the plastic. When you finished with the sheet feed it though again at a different temperature and it erases the text.

There are some issues with this system, the PrePeat costs $5,500 and each plastic sheet has a price of $3.30.

There simply cannot be anyone that actually likes going to the dentist and especially when he says that you need a filling!

But now could there finally be a way of fixing a dodgy tooth without actually having to sit there while the dentist drills a hole inside your head? Well it seems so with the Icon system from DMG.

This system allows the dentist to treat a decaying tooth without drilling, but does require the use of Hydrochloric Acid, this burns off the outer layer of the tooth so that the dentist can then use a low viscosity resin, and this is then sealed with a blue light flash.

The Verizon MiFi is a great tool, but the engineering team who created the default password mechanism should have taken into consideration the limited entropy in the selection of passwords, and the well-publicized attacks against WPA-PSK networks to limit customer exposure.

Here’s a fantastic photography hack that involves an umbrella bought at the dollar store and what seems to be a cheap bulb light from Home Depot. I think this is a great way to get around over-priced, commercial light umbrellas.

So I built a DIY light umbrella! I took a dollar store umbrella and sprayed the underside with white spray paint, then clipped the umbrella and a lamp onto Tom’s mic stand. The lamp, pointing into the white reflective underside of the umbrella, radiates light evenly back across the record player stand – making my editing job much easier.
