New war is over

I reached an agreement with my new friends after a relatively disastrous opening few days, a negotiated end to hostilities and an agreement to stop posting about the war.

They consider it a lesson cheaply learned, and it looks like they have taken it to heart. (I must be getting soft. Then again, it is the first time someone has actually offered up a sincere apology.)

So I wait, and wait. My suspect timer's starting to run out...and buddy's covetor is still on d-scan. Track it down to a pos where he and his hauler buddy are idling...I open up another private conversation:

The combat hauler returns!

So, wandering around running locators, because people are hedging their bets and locating folks they think are online, when an orca and a couple retreivers show up on the dscan...and some Cargo Containers.

It has been a while since I've seen any can mining in high sec, and I happen to be in a combat hauler. Time to party like it is 2011.

Warping to the belt, it is a set of three pilots, similarily named. The orca is playing anchor near the warp in and the retreivers are sitting in the middle of the roids chewing on them, and creating cans that the orca is pulling in.

So I say to myself. 'Self... This is obviously wrong. Time to....flip a can.' So I swan over to the orca, then make a bee-line for one of the obvious dump cans. And steal a few thousand m3 of plag.

The orca....lights me up....Christmas has come early! I make a bee-line for it and apply tackle, neut, and dps. (When I say dps...I mean a single light neutron blaster and some drones... it is a combat hauler after all)

After a moment or two, both retreivers also sicc drones on me and the one armor repairer I have turned on starts to strain, smoke rising from the electronics on the bridge as I force navy cap boosters through the system. Haulers were never meant for this kind of abuse and it shows. The nereus is great for it, but it isn't a real combat platform.

The d-scan thrums, waiting for some backup, any backup. The suspect timer bleeds down slowly, oh so slowly, but no backup for the hapless orca seems to be forthcoming. After fifteen minutes I am no longer a suspect, and just have limited engagements with these three bozos. I try to open a conversation with the industrialists, but they don't seem to want to chat at all.

The orca has been making a bee-line towards a station, carrying us towards one of the retreivers...And the structure starts to go....oh god, more structure and a default amount of hardening...but eventually, reloading, injecting, repairing. 30 minutes go by in total before:

And I start to clean up. And an astero shows up. It is the orca pilot. I'm not sure what he's thinking exactly, but I burn at him, throw some drones his way. And he runs... I take a look at the nereus. And notice something on the hull. Kill marks, first ones.

The combat industrial is back. And looking to wreak havoc across the cluster.

Driving home from swimming lessons. My youngest pipes up and asks 'Papa? Why is it so unfair?'

Bracing myself, thus could go anywhere. 'What is unfair?'

'Why do girls bathing suits have two parts and boys only have one? That is unfair?'

Desperate for a way to explain in five year old terms society's body shaming, I try to buy some time. 'What us unfair about it?'

'The boys don't get something to cover their tops!'

And it strikes me again about how much different life appears from the point of view of a five year old. She asks me why that is. And I have gotten the words together. About how there are laws and rules in place to not show certain body parts in public and they are different for boys and girls. But that there are other places in the world where you can walk around outside without a top on. Like Ontario.

And she does the 'oh, okay' thing where she just writes it off as 'yet another rule that is unfair for no good reason' like when my wife explains why Gay Marriage wasn't allowed.

I am just hoping that we are explaining it right and in the way that our kids realize that rules and laws can change, and hopefully in the future they can make good choices about which laws and rules to follow, which to bend, and which to break.

And maybe which to fight to get changed.

Who knows at this point. Way too early to know. I think it is a good sign that I worry about it.

#GamerGate mob rules and the game they are playing.

#GamerGate is an angry mob. I suppose I could use less loaded words to describe them, but it fits so well.

The anti-#GamerGate side is turning into an angry mob. Because they are reading #GamerGate's playbooks online and adapting the things which are perceived to work.

Like any other large number of people, there are diverse opinions, and bad apples. Folks who will have a rational conversation and those who will pry and doxx at leisure.

Both side can produce a number of examples of harassment, doxxing, toxicity. Counting coup as it were.

Like it was a game.

#GamerGate unleashed thunderclap and had their biggest day ever of mentions on twitter. And many touted it like it was an awesome thing, that topsy was like a leaderboard that wasn't hackable.

Like a game.

This isn't a game folks.

#GamerGate has setup a winning condition of a sort. The removal of corruption in games media. No more ethics problems in games media. That is all they want. Sounds reasonable?

And it does until you think about the games media. They report on the very people who supply them with ad revenue.

The people who provide them with early access to games. With screenshots and tidbits of information that differentiate one outlet from another.

There is an automatic conflict of interest. The entire games media is corrupt.

So they have chosen an unwinnable end goal. And are treating their movement like a game. With opponents to be shut up or otherwise defeated. A scoreboard that counts the number of times they get mentioned. Public information that might hold tidbits to connect things together if they research hard enough.

Except it isn't a game. The npcs are real people. This is their lives people are indiscriminately pouring through. Dumping information onto twitter. To win, to conquer the opposition. Like a game.

To my shame the antigg side is picking up the trend.

I am ashamed of both sides at this point.

I believe that #GamerGate is the most problematic side because it is an actual mob. With more unpredictable edges and factions. And an end goal (as stated) that is actually unattainable.

Stop playing this game. Actual people are being hurt.

I know nobody is going to actually listen to this really. But I cannot just stand by and watch this travesty happen.

This isn't a game. Stop playing it like it is one.

The 'Gamer' demographic, male, 18-35. The holy grail of demographics for video games. And someone had the temerity to point out that it was changing, that the stereotype is changing.

#GamerGate goes out of its way to say it is inclusive. That gamers are not all white males. See..SEE!

Proving the article's point.

Let's read that again. The whole point of the article is to point out that the classic demographic is changing. More women specifically. And #GamerGate goes on to make a point of saying that there are lots and lots of women who support #GamerGate, who are part of the demographic.....

Hence reinforcing the point of the article.

Why Patreon and Kickstarter aren't unethical

Claiming that having a relationship between people makes for 'non-objective' and 'unethical' behavior. And that funding anybody's creative processes and then reporting on it is definitely unethical.

Now, this does not sit well with me, at least in our current discussion. And I've had to think about it long and hard. And it goes back to why I believe that a "non corrupt" games industry press is a not possible.

And there we have the fulcrum upon which #GamerGate has been turning the crank on this. These awful unethical journalists funding the creative process of producers!

The games industry press at its core is unethical. They have a fiduciary relationship with those they report on through advertising. Unless you setup a thing like 'Consumer Reports' for gaming, it will always be the problem. And rate very strongly on the ethics/moral scale.

Now, support between persons is on a continuum, as suggested by the professor himself. A christmas card through to full support of a creative process. The question being, exactly where on the spectrum does patreon and kickstarter stand?

Kickstarter is easy. It is effectively pre-ordering a game. A patreon shows 'bias' towards a certain author.

Now, where on the continuum of support is a patreon. $10 a month?

So, half the cost of a dinner out. Just above 'sending christmas cards' but below 'lavish dinner' and certainly well below 'funding the artistic endeavor'.

Also, if you listen carefully, Doctor Lisby is asked about reporters reporting on things outside of their field. Games Reporters are part of the industry itself, with all the incestuous connections and contacts that that engenders.

So, in the general case, sure. I'll believe that reporting on someone that you support can be an ethical problem. A small one most likely but sure.

Inside the industry, given the overwhelming amount of ethical problems more significant than support through patreon. It is so not a problem, and if it is perceived as one, it is the observer's bias on their perception of a 'journalist' as opposed to 'games journalist' which is still essentially a hobbyist press position.

I suppose asking the doctor a more exact question and allowing for a non-binary 'ethical'/'non-ethical' may prove eye opening. But I'm a bit far away.

So I was having a discussion with someone on #GamerGate. And it hit me like lightening.

What we usually think of when we hear corruption in video games media:

Pay to review. A person or company pays a reviewer to write a review with the understanding that the review will be a positive review, or at least more positive than it otherwise would have been.
Free Games to Review. A person or company gives a review copy of a game for a review with the understanding that the review will be a positive review, or at least more positive than it otherwise would have been.

What #GamerGate claims is corruption in video games media:

Pay and review. Journalist donates to kickstarter or patreon and then proceeds to report on the person or project in a positive fashion, because they liked whatever they donated to.

Now... I don't know about any of you out there....BUT WHAT THE HELL?

A journalist reporting on something, via review or op/ed, who liked something well enough to throw some money at it, would probably have written a positive review of that thing, even if there had been no funding option.

And this is corrupt, how? Can anyone in #GamerGate explain how this is corrupt?

Adam Baldwin and #GamerGate

I was asked how I could assume that @AdamBaldwin was complicit in the beginnings of #GamerGate.

And let me define how #GamerGate started, so folks reading can at least know what page of the book I am on, whether or not they believe it or not.

I am pretty sure: https://storify.com/strictmachine/gameovergate is pretty well a good primer of how #GamerGate started. As an extension of a thoroughly hateful and spiteful attack.

And about half way through (and a few more times in the middle if you read the extended logs) there are references to @AdamBaldwin being brought in or otherwise prodded to join in on #GamerGate. And as per rhetoric, it is spoken that Mr. Baldwin actually coined the term.

Now, he's claimed he wasn't tricked or otherwise bamboozled into throwing support behind it.(Hm, deleted tweet issues... I should get better about taking pictures or otherwise archiving....)

Soooo... Let's assume then (reasonably given the rhetoric) that he knows all about how #GamerGate got off the ground. Including all the sordid attacks.

Weeks later. Fearless coiner of hashtag, goes and siccs his followers on someone under the assumption he got a pro-#GamerGate journalist fired. Full-on, forward press bullying and harassment. The guy's office is getting calls. Random people are tweeting at the target. Until it is pointed out that the target doesn't even know the guy who got fired. Baldwin deletes the originating, (and other) tweets, puts up a mea culpa (Still there at the time of this writing, and no I am not going to link it, no sense in pointing more people at a target of harassment in case they want to start round 2 at the gentleman.)

Up until that point, I was willing to give Mr. Baldwin the benefit of the doubt, that he is somehow not informed about how this all started, and having made his choice is digging in his heels in the same way I have proclaimed to be anti-#GamerGate. Until this last event.

Having shown to be a thuggish bully perfectly willing to step over the line from genial thrash talking over the internet where people get punched in the feels and rage but there is usually no real lasting effect, to overt harassment and bullying using his own personal social media power. I can see how he may have gotten involved knowing full well what was actually going on from the start. Maybe he gets his rocks off on it. I don't know. I don't think I *want* to know.

I can't say that the anti-#GamerGate side of things is innocent of the same kinds of attacks. There are reports being thrown all over #GamerGate and at least one report of someone actually having been fired. (Again, not gonna link. Nobody needs any more harassment.)

And people will yell and rage all over the internet about 'proof' Prove Mr. Baldwin actually was complicit in trying to get his target harassed and fired. Prove that he knew anything about how #GamerGate started. Prove that the series of events that you describe actually happened. I'll have to admit I can't prove it. But I believe that is essentially what happened. I may have a few details wrong here and there, I am not omniscient. But I believe it is essentially correct. Given his statement that he was not 'bamboozled' into throwing his support behind #GamerGate and his behavior since.

False equivalence and #GamerGate

So...@AdamBaldwin sicced his followers on someone 'by accident'.

Harassing phone calls and emails ensued. Full frontal bullying. Of the person and his employer. Which only stopped when it was pointed out that the target was not who he thought it was. (As an aside here, it wouldn't have mattered if the person in question was exactly who @AdamBaldwin thought it was. Nobody deserves to be harassed in this fashion. And a 'Mea Culpa' does not make it all better.)

It has been suggested to me that this is no worse than having the entire media establishment call you a misogynist man-child.

Okay, let me make something perfectly clear. Getting punched in the feels by having a large group of people paint a group you are part of in a negative light is not equivalent to having a large group of people personally harass you and your employer.

If you get a large number of people in the calling you, specifically, a name. Then I'll call them equivalent cases.

In the meantime, I suggest you think of *why* you are upset that a characterization of a group you are part of bothers you. There is a quote by Elanor Roosevelt, "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." And while that is not entirely true because social behavior is not exactly built in, most folks get the hang of it. I suggest practice. Or maybe an examination of the behavior of your group to see whether or not you feel bad because the characterization is true and maybe you don't like being a part of something like that.

TL;DR version: Getting punched in the feels by being part of a group of people that is being maligned is not equivalent to a large group harassing a single person.

#GamerGate and unintended consequences

I was asked to prove whether #GamerGate was still sexist in a twitter conversation, and in digging around with search terms, I ran across several talking points and other various scripts for use in conversations in #GamerGate. Along with guides on how to use the internet and not give clicks and advertising dollars to various sites. All of which suggest installing adblock plus.

Now, the thing about adblock plus is it effectively makes you invisible to the advertisers and their analytics. So even sites that you want to support are no longer getting reports of you being there, and I've seen no indication of an exception list being passed around to try and mitigate this.

So effectively, ardent supporters of #GamerGate are no longer being counted. Relative success scoring among advertising campaigns between various outlets may actually start favoring the ones being boycotted due to this practice because of an apparent drop off of views of advertising if enough GamerGate supporters start ad blocking.

Awesome! Keep it up #GamerGate.

Hey #GamerGate. I just thought of something.

You... are the product.

When you visit your favorite sites. Polygon or Gamasutra or, Breitbart. You are not consuming a product. You are the product.

The advertisers pay for access to you.

If you were consumers in the traditional sense, I think you would have a leg to stand on, demanding change to the product you pay for and consume.

But you don't pay for it. You are the product in this transaction. At least you get the choice of venues in which you are sold.

Who are you to tell those consumers which product to buy? Or what venues to look for you in?

Misrepresenting yourselves as loyal customers in emails. When most likely you aren't. Is both dishonest and unethical. Feigning concern for their brand image when all you are doing is trying to force a website to follow your arbitrary rules is most definitely dishonest and unethical.

I do not like your methods #GamerGate. And your thuggish attempts to cause outlets to knuckle under to your demands offend.

Why I am anti-#GamerGate

And it hit me. That is exactly why I am against #GamerGate. They claim I will blindly listen to the league of social justice warriors due to the social shaming I will receive. And that the games that I write should be free of 'political influence' Along with a veiled threat of abandoning any game that might add a feature that is 'politically motivated'.

And you know what? I don't like any of that. My dislike for #GamerGate originally came as a knee-jerk reaction to their misogynistic attacks in the beginning against women in the games media and in games development and their supporters. (Notice that they have not called for anyone to lose their jobs that isn't either a woman or a supporter of those women? I have.)

But as time has worn on. While I still dislike their movement because of its origins, it is now a more personal reasoning that truly fuels me.

I have to listen to these folks. They are, after all, my customers or at the very least my potential customers. But to demand that I modify my creative process, no matter what it would be, to suit their political agenda is anathema to me.

I've never had a 'social justice warrior' tell me that I needed to change anything. They might point out the sexism. But they don't say 'You have to change that'. (They have pointed out that they would buy games without the sexism, but they have not said 'You have to change your already produced work')

The loud rhetoric foaming out of #GamerGate proclaims all social agendas to be forever ejected out of 'their' games, that developers should not modify their games to suit a political agenda. What if we want to? It may be trite but I want everyone to play my games. And if I can add something to make it more appealing to 50% of the population, I may try it despite the cries that I am modifying the thing to suit a political agenda.

I am also frankly insulted, aghast really, that they think I am so easily swayed by either side in this debate.

In a nutshell. #GamerGate and supporters, you do exactly as you claim the anti-#GamerGate folks do. You are anathema to yourselves. You are insulting to me. I find your methods deplorable. I cannot tell you to pipe down, or shut up, because I like the concept of free speech. But know you have set yourselves against me. And while I do not have a large audience. What audience I do have will be as informed about the situation as I can make them. It is pretty well all I can do, but I will do it.

Hi there. I write the games that you play. Well, some of you and some of the games.

I must say that everything I say here is my opinion and not necessarily that of my employers. And most certainly not all developers.

In the interests of full disclosure. I consider myself a Feminist. 'Balls out Feminist' it says on my twitter bio along with 'Social Justice Warrior'. So you are likely about to run screaming if you are pro #GamerGate because you think I am going to call you all misogynists, and if you are anti-#GamerGate I bet you think this is going to be some sort of feminist screed.

Well, it is neither.

And as someone pointed out, I cannot speak for all developers. But I'm going to use 'we' here because I know how a few development houses have worked, and they were roughly similar. You don't like it, you don't have to read.

As developers, we want to make the best damn games we can. We want it all. And we want to make them better.

Sometimes that is adding buckets of gore. Or non violent ways to complete missions. Or battleships to golf You never know what we are cooking up that we think will make the game better.

We listen to everything being said. But more than what is being said on the internet. We run focus groups and early play testing by said groups.

We watch the behavior of our players most of all. What game modes are they playing? What is the accumulated total number of hours used per weapon type? Why are the players favoring fireball over chain lightening?

We take that all in, and propose solutions and features and plan for the next game or release.

And that is roughly how we decide how to change your games. There are variations all over the map. You don't do focus groups if you don't have the budget for it. You might count on early playable alphas and customer feedback along with all the early data you can collect.

We do listen. More to the data and behavior we can measure than to our forums. And more to our own forums than we do to more anonymous communication platforms out there. And that is because of the data reliability and source. Measurable behavior covers your consumers 100%, everyone who plays, we get data from. Forums typically attract from five to ten percent of our player base. And we've got no flying clue where the comments from the wilds of the internet come from.

But we do listen to all of it. We would be remiss if we didn't.

You are going to have to trust us, those that produce the games you play. We are the caretakers of your favorite games and the new ones that you will hopefully play in the future. Because we have to produce games that people will play and buy and or play and purchase in-game premium content or else we won't be around long. That doesn't mean we will always make choices that the 'hardcore' will like, or that the 'social justice warriors' will like, or that anyone will like. But we have to listen to all of you or else we will go by the wayside. To do otherwise we may be missing opportunities to put in things in your favorite games which will attract more players, or to develop new games which will attract a wider audience.

I just had a discussion on Twitter where I got an impassioned plea to "Don't Change Our Games" and "we aren't trying to press an agenda on you." Which prompted me to write this. If your agenda is "Don't change our games! Don't cater to ." You are pressing your agenda on us as much as the "You have to your games" that you are railing against.

That being said, we get down to my own point of view.

I am personally opposed to #GamerGate's official stated goals as I believe they are actually unworkable in the current gaming media. And I believe that gaming media will be much poorer if the good relationships between the media and the producers fall apart. I am further opposed since #GamerGate's stated goals only seem to apply to a certain section of the gaming media interested in social issues. (A polite way of saying the movement is targeting feminists and their supporters...oops, did I say that out loud?)

So, #GamerGate supporters are busy sending mail to advertisers to dissuade them from advertising on their targets.

So let's ask the question. Exactly how many of these poor gamers are actually customers of the advertisers? Are they customers at all? Are they just blindly sending in email after email from various throw away mail accounts?

I'm going to guess that most of these concerned #GamerGate folks are not customers of the advertisers at all, and are probably misrepresenting themselves to these companies. Effectively busing in voters to an election.

Now, the website was up, but obviously hurting a bit. Someone punching the create user button, but not terribly hard (Up to 12 a second!) And this attack was costing 500 dollars in bandwidth costs.

Um...what?

The server in question is located in a colo site in Northern Dallas to be non-specific about it. A single box sitting in one of their racks will cost $500 a month, including 1mb/sec bandwidth. A fixed cost for bandwidth. The attacks are costing nothing (and doing nothing) but lagging the site a bit. Relatively ineffective. BUT they are not going to quit!

So why make a big deal out of an ineffective attack? The only rational reason is to give them a convenient quotable 'oh my goodness we were being haxxored!' For later public consumption.

And of course without more access to the machine I could not even begin to speculate as to who would have been doing this or from where.

But it is of just an example of the 'News' that is being spread across the entire hashtag. It is just one I can speak to and call 'bull' upon.

What if you declared war, and nobody came?

The IEEE has returned. Showing people the error of their ways in mining into unsecured containers, and in general being a pain in the posterior.

Unfortunately, people mining into cans is rarer than a steak scared by a lit match. But you do an awful lot of directional scanning trying to find a target. So for days, I found an Obelisk out in space, same spot for days. Tracking it down to a pos, just sitting there next to a bunch of corporate hangar arrays and ship maintenance arrays and labs and manufacturing bits and frobs.

So, since I'm nearby often, I bookmark the tower. And once a day I warp to the tower, glance at the freighter, and case the joint. Add everyone I can find who belongs to the corp to my address book, and see nobody logging in. Days pass, a couple weeks. No logons. No movement. Until yesterday. Warping to the tower I no longer stop at the edge of a bubble. Instead, there is the Obelisk. Glittering, lights flashing in the darkness.

Ejecting the pod and boarding the ship, it smells of disuse. The structure dangerously weakened by expanded cargoholds, it creaks as I align it to the station and engage warp. And slowly, slowly crawl across the system. I'd only ever owned one other freighter, another Obelisk, another stolen Obelisk. Settling it into the station, I return to the tower in question. Peering at all those lovely boxes, I declare war on the hapless corporation.

And nothing. No communication, no eve mail. No angry conversation.

Tonight, I blew up all the labs and factories.A couple hundred mil worth of blueprints, minerals and other stuff drop.

So what if you declared a war and nobody came? In this case, it is still worth it.

After making a second run at lowsec piracy. I decided it wasn't for me. So back to what I know best.

So, I am busy buzzing around in highsec when I spot exhumers, barges, orca and cans in space. And say to myself...self, they cannot possibly be can mining. But I am incorrect.

It is a motley operation. Someone giving orca bonuses to random people mining ice of all things. Doing a quick asset check, I have an Iteron Mark V available. And it is even fit (terribly). I dock and dust it off. Turns out I cannot undock until I fix the fit.. But a quick re-arrangement fixes that.

Undocking, I get a bad feeling. I haven't done this in more than two years. Can flipping is significantly more dangerous now a days since Concord updated its rules of aggression. But I remind myself, poor operating standards and practices should not stand. And warp off to an ice belt.

Only one offender mining into a can...no, two cans. Approaching and being obvious about it. I flip a full can, and pull what I can into the volumnous hold. No response.. No movement. So I decide to just start hauling the ice off..when suddenly I've got drones on my case.

I start to bring the iteron back around. Firing up the targetting systems. And heading up to him. Flip a repper on, and apply a warp scrambler. I would have loved to also web, but with an iteron, you have to choose. Afterburner or Web. And I start firing...and firing. And...firing.

About five minutes later, the offender decides to have a chat.
