Some things in life are important to know, even if you don’t know that you don’t know it now, if you know what I mean. For example, it’s important to know how to tell if someone is a vampire, it’s important to know what happens if you crack an egg deep underwater, and it’s important to know the healing power of banana peels. You just never know what situation life might throw you into when you need to recall those valuable facts. In this article, you’ll learn how many steps are on the world’s longest straight staircase.

This staircase has 699 steps, and if you are afraid of heights (or if you are clumsy like me), I wouldn’t recommend climbing it, especially at night since the railing is missing in some places. It was built on the island of St. Helena in 1829. Back then, it was used for transporting goods into the city, and transporting manure out of the city. These days it’s mostly a tourist attraction, although not very many tourists actually climb the stairs.

Let’s do the math. If a typical flight of stairs has 10-30 steps, we’ll use 20 as the average. That means going to the top of this staircase would be equivalent to going up about 35 flights of stairs. You have to go up 1,576 steps to go from the ground level of the Empire State Building to the top, which is a little more than double this. Whenever I hear about a festival that celebrates animals, it always pulls at my heartstrings. I love when people find new ways to interact and include animals into our lives. This particular way might be a little odd, but after reading about how well cared for these elephants are, I give it a high-five.

This week the annual 3-day elephant festival was held in Nepal. In addition to other activities, people gathered to watch an elephant race, an elephant beauty pageant and even an elephant soccer game. In case you are wondering, in the beauty pageant, the elephants were judged on movement, physique, health, cleanliness, sense and capabilities and the decorations that their owners painted on them. Most of them came to the event complete with beautifully polished pedicures. The elephant who won was 28-years-old, and she was wearing a pink cape and had flowers painted on her toenails.

The elephants who played soccer gave it their all, and they used all four feet and even their trunks to score goals. Apparently they are trained to hit the ball when someone yells “kick.” The elephants were even treated to a special meal of rice and sugar wrapped in grass. Since technology is becoming more and more human, the smartphones we have in the very near future might become more than just phones. There might be a day soon when we consider our mobile device to actually be our friend. This is a concept phone developed by designer Julius Tarng. The best way I can describe it is that it’s a cross between a smartphone, a virtual pet, a robot and a best friend. In fact, this may be the team you’d least expect to come up with something like this. The objective of the mobile app-making studio was to take on the “mobile” aspect of its business to the next level.

The electric skateboard is equipped with a Kinect Sensor fixed to the front of a longboard so it faces back at the rider to detect their movements and gestures. These are translated into commands used to control the board’s 800 watt electric motor, which is powered by a 36 volt battery and can carry the rider at speeds of up to 32 mph. The all-terrain tyres means that the board can also head off road!

Futuristic Machines Imagined In 1940

I have long been wondering if we, humanity, have gotten better at predicting the future thanks to all the experience we have gained through the millions of years we’ve existed. I mean, in just the last hundred years or so we have gone from primitive technology to advanced microchip technology, and while considering that 100 years is only a fraction of the time we have been on this earth, it’s quite an extraordinary feat. Just 70 years ago we still had a lot of imagination, but we didn’t really predict it thoroughly it seems. We tended to look into the future and pull back things that we still haven’t been able to achieve. Maybe it was the positivity or longing for the future that kept us dreaming up insane, yet plausible machines back then.

A series of images, or propaganda images rather, have surfaced lately thanks to Retronaut. They contain 18 machines that a few brilliant minds back in the ’40s thought we would see in a foreseeable future. They are nothing less than fantastic if you ask me. Sure, they are a little bit out there, but still most of them have been realized in one way or another. Maybe they haven’t become the pinnacle of successful inventions, but they have still been incorporated into our daily lives in one way or another, depending on what profession and lifestyle you have.

These “posters” come from the innovation design company Bohn which specialized in concepts of the future. Maybe it was a way to help the development and the imaginations of that particular era’s innovators, or perhaps it was just a way to make the future seem a little bit more bright and exciting. I am stunned by the scale of all of these “inventions,” and it seems even back then the concept and perception of things was that “bigger is better.” However, time has proven that we went in the total opposite direction, and now we continuously try to make things smaller.
