Today I’m going to introduce you to Sew Silly Designs which is owned by a talented lady named Kammie who impressed me right off because I discovered that not all of the beautiful diapers she makes are for infants and young children. Kammie can also sew special needs and adult diapers as well. In fact, the first diapers and covers that she made when her business first started were for an autistic 16-year-old boy.  Kammie says “I started this business to help my husband meet our financial needs to build our vision for our family. My goal in this business is to be able to raise awareness for the benefits of cloth and natural products.”

You’ll find lots of cute fitteds and one-size AI2 diapers in the Sew Silly shop, but Kammie also accepts custom orders if you don’t see what you need.

Here’s the one-size AI2 diaper that Kammie sent us:

It comes with an insert made of 4 thirsty layers of hemp fleece topped with 1 layer of soft cotton velour. Folded in half it fits perfectly inside the diaper.

I bet you noticed the cute outer fabric the Sew Silly diaper is made of. It’s bright blue with reptiles and amphibians of all kinds crawling on the outside. I told Kammie it made me think of the old nursery rhyme “snakes and snails and puppy dog tails.” That describes my Samuel perfectly!

And this picture shows the diaper opened up so you can see the cotton velour inner lining. This fabric feels just like velvet to the touch! There is a hidden layer of PUL in the AI2 which makes it waterproof.

And here’s the diaper on Samuel. I love the way it fits!

It’s not bulky at all:

Every time I put the AI2 on him, Samuel points and says “ribbit, ribbit!”

With a few snap adjustments, it fits great on Susanna (9 months):

Here are some of the things we really liked about our Sew Silly Designs AI2 diaper:

• The waistband and leg gussets are snug yet gentle so they kept messes in without leaving red marks
• The outer fabric print is one-of-a-kind and a real conversation-starter!
• The 3-layer diaper shell dries very quickly
• With an extra insert added, the Sew Silly AI2 makes a very absorbent nighttime diaper.

There was only one thing I found that I would change about this diaper:

• The wings curl back and don’t stay flat when fastened so maybe two snaps (one of top of the other) would help them stay put?

Here’s the “Swimm” diaper that Stephanie sent for two-year-old Samuel.

I don’t think I could have picked a more adorable print myself! I love anything with animals on it so this put a smile on my face, as well as Samuel’s. The swim diaper is very carefully made with sturdy PUL, contrasting fold-over elastic and a white mesh athletic-type fabric on the inside. You can see it in this close-up:

Like a lot of you, we’ve been blessed with very warm weather here. In fact, our state set a record of 92 degrees on April 25th. So my children are already starting to enjoy water play outside.

The idea behind a cloth swim diaper is to ditch disposables and dress your child in style while keeping messes contained. It’s just another fun way of introducing a re-usable product into your home and your cloth diapering system. Stephanie’s swim diaper prices are great and range from $10 to $12 depending on size. They range from x-small (7-14 pounds) up to x-large (35+ pounds). You can pick your fabric from her in-stock choices.

Here are some of the things we really liked about our Baby Tork Swimm Diaper:

• The pull-on style is super easy to get on and off.
• It’s well made and the print is so cute!
• It’s so easy to launder and dries super quick.

And here are a few things I might change about the diaper:

• Get a roomier leg band next time for Samuel; his legs are chunky and the elastic left some red marks on him.
• A snapping version would be great for getting on and off younger swimmers who are more likely to make a mess in the diaper, or for toddlers who are late to train. (update: Stephanie says this feature may be offered soon!)

One of my favorite shops in St. Mary’s, Kansas is Florence Adams, where I am greeted by beautiful displays and inviting fragrances as soon as I walk through the door. Florence Adams also has an online store where you can find vintage-inspired aprons, Polish pottery and classic linens.

I think the ladies at Florence Adams began to notice that I regularly ransacked the Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day rack. The seasonal scents are an admitted weakness of mine. Trust me, once you’ve cleaned up after Christmas dinner with orange clove dish liquid or freshened your springtime counter tops with bluebell all-purpose cleaner, you can kiss 409 good-bye.

So this might explain why Florence Adams very graciously sent us home with a big bottle of Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day to test out and share the results with you.

The scent we received was lavender, but don’t let the delicate name fool you; this stuff will work extra hard to earn it’s keep in your home. For weeks, I’ve been trying it on everything from grass-stained jeans to grungy cleaning rags and have been very pleased with the results. I can use less than the recommended amount and still get our clothes clean. And the lavender fragrance is light and natural-smelling; not over-powering at all.

So many commercial detergents I’ve tried in the past have a sickeningly strong fragrance. The names sound nice (ahhh Ocean Breeze!) but too often I open up the bottle only to be greeted with an overwhelming, highly-perfumed artificial fragrance that makes me want to seek out some fresh air.

Not so with Mrs. Meyer’s. If it says Lavender or Lemon Verbena, then that’s what it smells like because that’s what’s in there. And it won’t knock you off your feet. Pretty simple concept!

Speaking of Lemon Verbena, it’s my favorite scent for kitchen hand soap:

Here’s the scoop on Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day detergent. It contains anionic surfactants from plant-derived sources, cotton extract, borax, dirt and natural stain-fighting enzymes and essential oils. And all of the Mrs. Meyer’s liquid formulations are completely bio-degradable. Plus, the bottles are recyclable and are made with 25% post-consumer plastic.

Although not the best choice for cloth diapers because of the enzymes, Mrs. Meyer’s is great for washing baby clothes. And many people with sensitive skin find that Mrs. Meyer’s works well for them because of the naturally-derived ingredients and the fact that it’s dye-free.

If you’ve never tried Mrs. Meyer’s before, Spring is a great time to make a fresh start and have your own great-smelling “Clean Day.” You can find Mrs. Meyer’s cleaning products at the Florence Adams website. The 64-load bottle of detergent is $14.99 but I can tell you honestly that I got a lot more than that out of it by just using 1/2  a capful.

I just ordered some more Tiny Tuchus diaper cream the other day because this is one baby product I do NOT like to run out of. What do I love about Tiny Tuchus?

- It’s all natural and gentle on little bottoms.

- It costs less than ANY other natural diaper cream on the market.

- It rinses completely out of cloth diapers and does not stain.

- It’s effective! We notice improvement after just 1 application.

- It comes in two different varieties: zinc diaper cream and yeast diaper cream.

- It’s cool and soothing and my babies never complain while I’m applying it.

The Tiny Tuchus creams contain pure lanolin which helps the cream stay on your baby, and not on the diaper. Lavender and tea tree oil help to sooth the skin and zinc helps to dry out the rash and heal it fast.

Before I found Tiny Tuchus, my brand of choice was Boudreaux’s Butt Paste. Generally, Boudreaux’s did the job, but I had several problems with it:

- It’s greasy and not cloth-diaper friendly. I had to spend extra money on liners or disposables whenever we were dealing with a rash.

- With certain rashes, my babies would cry right after I applied the Boudreaux’s. This would subside after a few minutes, but I got frustrated with not knowing how they would react each time. I’m not sure what the ingredient is that was irritating their skin.

Sarah at Tiny Tuchus also makes the cutest little therapeutic “bath fizzy” cupcakes for just $1.50 and they contain baking soda, rice bran, calendula and vitamin E. My children love these things and can’t get enough of them!

Root vegetables like carrots, turnips, sweet potatoes, beets and onions are staples in the South, but lots of people associate them with fall and the harvest table. Here at Zephyr Hill, we love them year-round!

The Harvester truck came today and we were given 3 bags of carrots and 4 packs of blueberries (among other things). So I promptly made a huge blueberry cobbler and then got to work on the carrots. The recipe I am sharing below is very similar to one you’ll find often on Southern tables with names like “Carrot Coin Casserole” or “Baked Vegetables.”

The delicate cream sauce (with a hint of nutmeg) and toasted topping are perfect compliments to the sweet, fresh taste of the carrots. This is a great side dish any time of year and pairs well with grilled meat, baked ham or pork and good ole fried chicken.

CARROT CASSEROLE WITH CRUMB TOPPING

2 cups sliced carrots
1/2 white onion, sliced thinly
1/2 frozen peas or mixed veggies
1/2 cup shredded sharp cheddar
4 T butter, divided
1 T all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp salt
pinch of pepper
pinch of nutmeg
1/2 cup skim milk
1/4 cup bread crumbs or 1/2 can French’s fried onions

Put 1 inch of water in a sauce pan, add carrots and bring to a boil. Cover and simmer for 6 minutes. Add onion. Return to a boil. Cover and simmer 5 minutes or until vegetables are crisp-tender. Drain and add frozen peas.

Lightly spray a 9×9 baking dish with oil and spread half of the vegetables on the bottom. Cover with cheese and then pour remaining vegetables on top.

In same saucepan, melt 3 T butter and then add flour, salt, pepper and nutmeg. Stir and cook until smooth. Gradually stir in the milk and cook until thick and bubbly and smooth. Pour over vegetables.

Toast the bread crumbs in remaining 1 T of butter and sprinkle over casserole (or just sprinkle untoasted fried onions). Bake uncovered at 350 for 15-20 minutes, or until browned and bubbly.
