I was told when I first moved here, you don’t go to City Stages unless you want trouble.  It is horrible, the people are rude, it stinks and there is never anyone any good.

Wow where they wrong, lets see we are going this year to see  38 Special, Doobie Brothers, Styx, REO Speedwagon, and Lynyrd Skynyrd!  Yea that is a pretty good line up if you ask me.

I will be there all three days, starting Friday at lunch.   I always purchase my tickets through UCP (United Cerebral Palsy) Bham Casual day.  While purchasing casual day T-Shirts are over for 2009.  You should still donate to the great organization that is UCP Bham!  Talk to your boss and participate in next years Casual Day.

Working in the field that I do, I run into clients that I personally can’t stand.  I also am pretty sure, there are customers that can’t stand me and my blunt up front attitude.  In today economy where nearly every service is a commodity you have to have something that stands you out from everyone else.  I feel at my company this is our customer service.

We even have customers that leave us for what ever reason, but they turn back and say thanks.   They call us up to explain why they are leaving and %99 of the time it is due to other unforeseen circumstances and not because they where unhappy with the service we provided.

To my customer.
I may not have the answer, but I’ll find it.
I may not have the time, but I’ll make it.

When we see an issue we stand up and take responsibility for the issue, even if it is not our issue to start with, we make it our issue.  We work hand in hand with the customer to resolve the issue.  Sometimes this takes a few minutes, sometimes it takes days.  This is done so that the client knows we are available for what ever they may need.  It also lets them know they have a partner.

The quality of our work depends on the quality of our people.

Finally what it boils down too is the people you hire. I work with a group of people that are, I would say the best at what they do. People who are not afraid to go the extra mile to make sure something is done, and done correctly. We keep each other in check, we work as a unit not as an individual. While you may speak to one person on the phone, they have a team sitting in waiting to chime in and help.

She will be attending Birmingham-Southern this fall studying Biology.  She has pretty much know what she has wanted to do since she was very young.

People approach me like I should be sad, sad that she’s growing up.  It is not sad, it is a great thing.  My wife and I have accomplished the goals we set out to, and that is to raise a Strong Woman, A Free Spirit, a Philosopher in her own right, and a person with a keen eye.  Someone that I know will touch the world in some magnificant way.

Oh I’m so proud of her not taking the easy road, of long nights studing to get to where she wants to be.  I’m so proud of the way she deals with everyday issues and takes the time to think of worldly ones.

I will leave you with a poem, by Richard Wilbur that reminds me of the days of her studying alone in her room, late into the night.

We have channels that are dedicated to 24/7 news.  Journalist are no more, they are celebrities now.  Willing to do anything to put themselves in front of the camera.  The more extreme the more chance of them being the one in front of the camera.

I remember growing up, we would hear the “Breaking News” on the TV.  The whole family would run toward the TV to see what was going on.  Now everything is breaking news.

As defined by Wikipedia

A journalist (also called a newspaperman) is a person who practices journalism, the gathering and dissemination of information about current events, trends, issues, and people while striving for viewpoints that aren’t biased.

Key word in there biased.

To favor one thing over another due to personal opinion.

So what has happened to journalist? Are there any more journalist in the world?  Do any of them still exist?  I would hope so, but the more I watch the “news” the less I believe it.

So where do you get your news?  Do you still believe in and trust the local news?  What about the News Channels?

One of the best parts was not from the scheduled sessions. It was the sessions in the halls that I found the most interesting.   How several very opinionated individuals can get together and discuss everything from the type of music someone listens to, to local Birmingham Politics.

It was good seeing old friends, meeting new ones, and hanging with current one.  It was also great meeting our nerd brethern from Nashville, Hey Mitch.  I took another listen to a radio station I ditched,  Live 100.5 thanks Ken.

I’m looking forward to the next BarCamp and think we could easy handle two a year in Birmingham.   Up next, WordCamp!

So what is an RFC?  Well it is a Request for Comments.  It is the standards that defines the Internet and how it operates.  It also refers to the way RFC documents are discussed and approved by the Internet community.

RFC821 describes the way e-mail servers talk to each other.  So lets go over a standard email discussion between two servers.  We will call them mail.serverA.net and mail.serverB.com.  A is going to connect to B and send an email to UserB from UserA.  This starts when mail.serverA.net connects to mail.serverB.com on port 25.  ServerA has ip 1.1.1.1 and ServerB 2.2.2.2

ServerB: 220 mail.serverB.com

ServerA:  helo mail.serverA.net

ServerB: 250 mail.serverB.com Hello mail.serverA.net [1.1.1.1], pleased to meet you

ServerA: MAIL FROM: UserA@serverA.net

ServerB: 250 2.1.0 UserA@serverA.net... Sender ok

ServerA: RCPT TO: UserB@serverB.com

ServerB:  250 2.1.0 UserB@serverB.com... Recipient ok

ServerA:  DATA

etc…

So exactly how did we start following the standards?  Rules!

First we require that the server you connect to ours from has a correct DNS entry.  DNS is the Domain Name Service, it is the service that turns mail.serverA.net to 1.1.1.1.  So if our mail server gets an email from mail.serverA.net we do a DNS/Nslookup on the mail server and see that it returns 1.1.1.1 but wait then we check to see that 1.1.1.1 returns to mail.serverA.net as a standard all mail servers that send email should have their dns forward and reverse.

Second we require the server to identify itself per standard.  Helo FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name).  This is part of the RFC821.  So serverA would say
helo mail.serverA.net

Third per RFC we require the mail from: and rcpt to: to follow RFC period.
mail from: <user@host>

Last not following the RFC or anything else, but we are stopping users from emailing themselves.  Something that spammers have taken up doing.  Not emailing themselves, although that would be funny.  They have started sending email as the user, so the to and from are the same.  I know we can block email if it is not from an internal ip etc….  That does not work as our users are located on many different networks, at many different locations.

So how has this done?  Well we have had people calling that can’t email to someone.  We explain why and tell them how to fix it.  Users have called “I don’t think mail is working, I haven’t got any spam!”.  Oh yea and the hoss mail server has gone from 80 to 90% processor usage to less then 15% at peak.  We have also blocked 300,000 on one server in 24 hours.

Finally if you are a mail administrator, please quit just going with it!  Please quit going, well its broke but it still works no one is complaining.  Fix Your Server!

I completely 100% agree with you, except the getting involved part.

We The Federal Government!

I do believe we can go back to a true United States of America, and live by the constitutional rights given to each and every citizen.  The country has and can live up to ideals set forth in the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution.

While I was there, I did not hear anyone chanting Republican, Republican or Democrat, Democrat.  I heard the chants of USA.   I saw many people explaining their problems with the government.  Guess what, they where not all about Taxation.  I too thought they would be.  Several groups where there taking up signatures for their causes.  I also heard several people explain ways they thought it should or could be fixed.  After all, it has been said

That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

Yes nothing that is happening now is new, but some people see and or take it longer then others.  Its like the pain threshold, I prefer to call this one the bullsh*t threshold.  Only when that threshold is reached do people start wanting to do something about it.

In this last election we where faced with two democrats,  I do not believe we have a two party system anymore.  We now are under a one party system.  The media is controlled by such a party that is why we hear nothing of the Fair Tax, something I believe in.  It is also the reason fair and equal time was not given to Dr. Paul during the last election.  The only time he was actually on a network any network even the Republican network Fox was when they where trying to make fun of him.  Even the “Great American” Sean Hannity wouldn’t give him the time of day.

I used to call myself a Republican, but I didn’t feel let down on this last election.  I’m not even mad about the election itself.  I feel I would have lost either way.  I am also glad for the current economic problems.  I believe in the worst of times, America is at its greatest.  I think America has become a bunch of puds!  I have said and told people watch the unemployment rate rise and you will start to see real customer services.

So while I agree with you, I do NOT believe sitting at home is the answer.  Not doing anything, will never get anything done.  It will take real change, nothing that can come from the elephant or the donkey war.  That change has to start somewhere, the seed has to be planted with someone.  If nothing more then someone reading the fair tax information, and thinking about it.  Then it was worth it.

Well it wasn’t blown out of proportion.  The conflicker worm has already infected well over a million computers world wide.   Some have it upwards 10 million computers.   I don’t think it was blown out of proportion, if anything I believe it has opened a few eyes.  Have you made sure your updated on all your software?

If you run a windows operating system, you MUST keep your machine updated at all times.  This is not a suggestion, this is not an idea, this is a fact. If you do not, you will be infected if not by the conflicker worm, by something.  Can you believe there are companies that are still running windows NT and Windows 95!

So now we just sit back and wait to see what it is going to do?  Some say it has began hijacking PC’s asking the user to pay $50 to get a fix.  Using popups to fool the user into thinking it is a valid anti virus program.  Others have said it has started to send spam, I can’t confirm either.  Only time will tell…

What about that thing on your back? It was Nasty!

Doctor has given me a clean bill of health.  My wife now wants me to wear sun screen but I can’t, it either smells funny or makes me feel slimmy.  I’ll just avoid the sun as much as possible.

Fat, yep still fat we joined the gym and since the surgery on my back haven’t been going as regular as I wished, we are going to start doing that again very soon.

Are you still a 2 1/2 pack a day smoker?

I haven’t had a Cigarette in 2 weeks! I don’t feel any different and still crave the hell out of them.  But I am now an Ex Smoker.

What about going Skype?

Went with T-Mobile @Home.. Great service so far.  The saving are not as good but I keep my number and have E911.  With our plan we was able to get this with $39.99 cost of equipment and $10 a month.

If you can NOT reach the following websites, you may be infected.

Can you run windows update and connect to windows update website?

If you can’t, and you can not reach the above websites you’re probably infected.   There are many ways and different products to get rid of it.  I’m not going to tell you what to use.  I’ll tell you the same thing I’d tell a client. You should reformat and reinstall.  That is the only 100% way of getting rid of it.  Never Trust a system with any personal or business data that has been infected or compromised by someone or something else.

So now lets say you’re not infected yet… what do you do?  Well first thing is to update your computer.  Make sure you have all the updates from Microsoft. Do not use some free tool, or some other website to download the updates.  So far the worm spreads by exploiting security vulnerabilities that there are patches for, and you should already be running.

NOTE If your infected with Conflicker:

If you are infected Microsoft has put together a page themselves that explains what versions are out and what you can do to remove it.  I still say you should reformat and reinstall.

This service is costing $10 a month that is $120 a year.  I also had to purchase the HiPort Adapter.  It cost me $39.99 so I’m down to $159.99 for the year.  I could have got the Linksys Router but I already have a router, don’t need two of them.  The adapter plugs directly into my router via an ethernet connection.  Its default address is 192.168.2. something. You can access it via a web browser.  The default username is blank and password is Admin.  Once you login you can configure this.

I first turned it on dhcp, turned off dhcp server on the device since I’m not going to be plugging anything into it.  I also turned off all services it had enabled.  So all it does is phone.  Oh yea did I mention you have to put a SIM card into this thing.

Next on my trusty old WRT54G, I am of course running Tomato Firmware.  I gave the HiPort device a Static DHCP address.

I then setup QOS “Quality of Service”.  Now it doesn’t matter the speed coming in, I can’t control how fast I’m recieving data.  What I’m setting QOS for is the speed going out.  So I figure up my outgoing speed, set that in QOS.  I then set the Mac Address of the HiPort as Highest Priority.  I have Prioritize small packets with these control flags ACK.  Default Class is Low.  Max bandwidth (Outbound) figure up max kbit/s.  Then I set Highest at %90-%100, High at %85-%95, Medium %60-80, Low %45-65, and Lowest %40-%50.  Then on Classifications I set the HiPort Mac Address for incoming/outgoing to Highest.  I set DNS port 53 0-2kb Highest (normal DNS queries).  I also have Web Ports 80/443 at High 0-512kb, and large dns and webports at medium both +2 and +512 kb.  I can go into more detail on QoS but what it ends up doing is making sure that my phone call gets highest priority going out.

So far no problems at all, the call quality is great.   Total Cost first year $159.99 saving me $600.00 a year on phone service.   Oh yea forgot to mention I have E911 and got to port my number.  Something Skype was not going to allow me to do.

axfrdns compresses some outgoing DNS packets incorrectly.)

Even though this bug affects very few users, it is a violation of the
expected security policy in a reasonable situation, so it is a security
hole in djbdns. Third-party DNS service is discouraged in the djbdns
documentation but is nevertheless supported. Dempsky is hereby awarded
$1000.

The next release of djbdns will be backed by a new security guarantee.
In the meantime, if any users are in the situation described above,
those users are advised to apply Dempsky's patch and requested to accept
my apologies. The patch is also recommended for other users; it corrects
