A few of you have had questions regarding the One-Star Upgrade that each Certified GeneWize Affiliate is awarded upon Graduation and enrolling 4 ACTIVE Affiliates – two on each of the right and left downline legs. First, this award Upgrade to One-Star is for those Affiliates who had not previously achieved a One-Star rank. It is NOT an upgrade to the next higher ranking – that is, if you were a Two-Star, you do not become a Three-Star by being Certified.

In addition, there have been some questions regarding WHEN a Certified Affiliate that has been upgraded to One-Star will start receiving commission checks calculated at the One-Star payout level. The answer is the same as all commission payouts. The system looks back at the previous completed pay period to see what your rank was at that time, It then uses that rank to compute the commissions for the CURRENT pay period, then processes the check and mails it to you. So….if you became Certified and upgraded to One-Star in the pay period previous to the current one, the your commissionable business for THIS current pay period will count at the new level. Remember: ALL commissions are paid in the CURRENT pay period by looking at your ranking during the PREVIOUS pay period.

In the last part of our Genewize Review, we took at look at the management of Genewize from at the corporate level.  Today I’d like to take a look at the compensation plan, to give you a solid understanding of exactly how it works, why it’s powerful and how it compares to two of the industry’s giants, Monavie and Agel.

I chose the image of the seedling, because unlike so many marketers will have you believe, wealth in network marketing will come to those who nurture their business’ growth over the long term and watch as it turns from a little seedling to a full fledged tree with excess fruit to bear.

With that said, the Genewize compensation plan is a hybrid binary plan.  To get a detailed video laying out the full details of the compensation plan, email David Kelsey at david@yourdnastore.com.

Like all binary plans, with the Genewize compensation plan, you will be growing two teams – left and right.  When you partner with a strong sponsor (up-team) you receive roll-over volume (meaning you get people placed under you from your upline).  This way, you can focus on building ONE leg, while your upteam takes care of the other (requirement: you qualify each leg with two people each).

You are paid a sales team bonus on the team that has the lesser sales volume in any pay cycle.  The percent you are paid out is determined by the affiliate rank you hold.  The top payout is 20% of sales volume (lesser leg) with a maximum payout of $100,000 per month.

Compare this to Monavie that caps the sales team bonus at $40,000/month and pays out a total of 10% sales team volume from lesser leg.  Agel caps at $25,000/month sales team bonus, and has a maximum pay out of 10% of total commissionable volume (CV).

Where Genewize’s compensation plan really stands apart from other binary plans is with the matching income bonuses.

Genewize pays out a maximum of 40% of ALL personally enrolled members at the highest rank of the compensation plan (4 star level), and this duplicates (30%,20%,10%) up to four levels deep.

An finally, the company has created an autoship bonus pool that is reserved for those that enroll 4 affiliates in a calender month.  This is incredible and will be the foundation to building a massive organization.  Why?  Because most companies reserve the autoship bonus pool for ONLY the top producing affiliates, therefore the only thing most affiliates will ever experience is the STORY of a leader that got the autoship pool.  In Genewize, each and every month, dozens of affiliates get a piece of the pool (so far, it has ranged between $300-$800 per share!) just for enrolling 4 new affiliates in a calender month.  Here’s an example.  Last month, our team enrolled a new affiliate on the 25th of the month.  Over the next 5 days, she enrolled 4 new affiliates on autoship, all on the supplements and skin repair serum.  So, she recieved $50 for each signup x 4 ($200) plus one share of the autoship bonus pool ($510).  So, in her first week, she got a check for $710! And, she now gets her product for FREE (Enroll 4 and Pay No More Program).

If you’re going crossed eyed, don’t worry.  I have a couple options for you.

1. Understand this. The Genewize compensation plan is innovative and generous.  If you go out and sponsor lots of people, you’re going to make money….bottom line.

All in all, I’ve been quite impressed by the leaders at the corporate level. From the scientific board to the marketing and sales leadership – there’s a real sense of caring and genuine drive to create and provide one of the most powerful wellness products the world has ever seen.

These are people who have worked with minimal monetary compensation, many of them for years. Genewize truly is more than just a business; it is also the realization of a dream.

Two of the corporate leaders that most impress me by their credibility and experience include:

Before Genewize, Kasten ran the lab facilities of the nations largest testing laboratory, Quest Diagnostics. He’s come into Genewize as the head of our laboratory facilities and brings a huge amount of experience from his Quest days to manage the DNA testing and formula customization that is required.

He’s also a heck of a nice guy. My husband told me that after the Orlando launch of Genewize in August, Dr. Kasten was exiting the hotel and went way out of his way to hold the door for my two young sons, despite having a large suitcase in each hand.

And now for room for improvement department:

One thing I will say is that Genewize’s customer service at these early stages has been a bit frustrating at times. Genewize has been steadily growing faster than even the best expectations of corporate. Consequently, the customer service department has been swamped, and turn-around times for administrative requests has taken as much as a full day.

I am encouraged that recently my upline team of everyone below my sponsor’s sponsor, Aaron Fortner, received our very own customer service person. We knew there would be some hiccups with a newly launched product, so I tell everyone before they join Genewize to remember to be patient as customer service comes up to speed.

I’ll give you updates as customer service improves in the coming weeks.

In the Genewize Review Part III, we’re going to tear apart the compensation plan by comparing it to a couple other industry giants – Monavie and Agel.

Chances are, what you’re about to read is a completely new way of looking at LDL cholesterol (the bad stuff!) and if you or someone you know struggles with high cholesterol, read on….this is interesting stuff!

First, let me explain how Genewize’s patented DNA test really works (in laywoman’s terms).

So, how does this relate to LDL cholesterol levels?

Well, that’s what I wanted to know…so I did a little research and this is what I found.

LDL (the bad cholesterol) has a protein component called APoB. Without APoB, LDL cannot form.

Now, as you know, your doc checks LDL levels as an indicator of your risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). But what I just learned, and am sharing with you now, is that LDL is in fact not as good an indicator of CHD as is APoB.

Remeber, LDL cannot form without APoB.

So, if we take a look at how our bodies form APoB and at what level, then we’ve got a pretty good indication of CHD risk.

Cool. So how is this done, right?

Well, that’s the interesting part about nutrigenomics (the study of how nutrition and genetics interact). What we can do now is peer into the APoB gene…and guess what?

If you have certain SNPs on the APoB gene, production of APoB increases and in turn….you got it…LDL levels increase as well.

Quixtar (Amway) – The Company utilizes Interleukin Genetics for their DNA assessments. Their assessment results are designed to guide their customers to make choices from the company product line. One of several thousands of products offered by Quixtar.

Market America – Utilizes Sciona for their DNA assessments and Garden State Nutrition for their products. They “pick and pack” pre-manufactured tablets or capsules and organize them into packets based on the customer’s DNA assessment results. The DNA guided products is one of thousands of products in their catalogue and does not appear to be a major focus.

Solgar – This well known, 60-year old vitamin and Herb Company is GeneLink’s distribution partner for retail health food stores. The Solgar NutrigenomX™ product is designed for retail sales and utilizes 12 pre-made products to choose from based on an individual’s DNA assessment results. Solgar is licensed by GeneLink for retail specialty health food stores only; Solgar does not market on the Internet or through a direct selling network or referral.

GeneWize’s product differs from Solgar in that Genewize creates a single serving solution (one product mixed specifically for the individual).

CodeNutrition – This Company doesn’t advertise the number or names of Gene SNPs they assess and indicate they have 38 ingredients available in their product (compared to over 100 from GeneWize). They have one PhD on their advisory board and appear to be in startup phase.

University of California, Berkeley, scientists, however, have found a welcome reason to delve into your genetic heritage: to find the slight genetic flaws that can be fixed with remedies as simple as vitamin or mineral supplements.

“I’m looking for the good news in the human genome,” said Jasper Rine, UC Berkeley professor of molecular and cell biology.

“Headlines for the last 20 years have really been about the triumph of biomedical research in finding disease genes, which is biologically interesting, genetically important and frightening to people who get this information,” Rine said. “I became obsessed with trying to decide if there is some other class of information that will make people want to look at their genome sequence.”

What Rine and colleagues found and report in the online early edition of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) is that there are many genetic differences that make people’s enzymes less efficient than normal, and that simple supplementation with vitamins can often restore some of these deficient enzymes to full working order.

First author Nicholas Marini, a UC Berkeley research scientist, noted that physicians prescribe vitamins to “cure” many rare and potentially fatal metabolic defects caused by mutations in critical enzymes. But those affected by these metabolic diseases are people with two bad copies, or alleles, of an essential enzyme. Many others may be walking around with only one bad gene, or two copies of slightly defective genes, throwing their enzyme levels off slightly and causing subtle effects that also could be eliminated with vitamin supplements.

“Our studies have convinced us that there is a lot of variation in the population in these enzymes, and a lot of it affects function, and a lot of it is responsive to vitamins,” Marini said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if everybody is going to require a different optimal dose of vitamins based on their genetic makeup, based upon the kind of variance they are harboring in vitamin-dependent enzymes.”

Though this initial study tested the function of human gene variants by transplanting them into yeast cells, where the function of the variants can be accurately assessed, Rine and Marini are confident the results will hold up in humans.

Their research, partially supported by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the U.S. Army, may enable them to employ U.S. soldiers to test the theory that vitamin supplementation can tune up defective enzymes.

“Our soldiers, like top athletes, operate under extreme conditions that may well be limited by their physiology,” Rine said. “We’re now working with the defense department to identify variants of enzymes that are remediable, and ultimately hope to identify troops that have these variants and test whether performance can be enhanced by appropriate supplementation.”

In the PNAS paper, Rine, Marini and their colleagues report on their initial analysis of variants of a human enzyme called methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, or MTHFR. The enzyme, which requires the B vitamin folate to work properly, plays a key role in synthesizing molecules that go into the nucleotide building blocks of DNA. Some cancer drugs, such as methotrexate, target MTHFR to shut down DNA synthesis and prevent tumor growth.

Using DNA samples from 564 individuals of many races and ethnicities, colleagues at Applied Biosystems of Foster City, Calif., sequenced for each person the two alleles that code for the MTHFR enzyme. Consistent with earlier studies, they found three common variants of the enzyme, but also 11 uncommon variants, each of the latter accounting for less than one percent of the sample.

They then synthesized the gene for each variant of the enzyme, and Marini, Rine and their UC Berkeley colleagues inserted these genes into separate yeast cells in order to judge the activity of each variant. Yeast use many of the same enzymes and cofactor vitamins and minerals as humans and are an excellent model for human metabolism, Rine said.

The researchers found that four different mutations affected the functioning of the human enzyme in yeast. One of these mutations is well known: Nearly 30 percent of the population has one copy, and nine percent has two copies.

The researchers were able to supplement the diet of the cultured yeast with folate, however, and restore full functionality to the most common variant, and to all but one of the less common variants.

Since this experiment, the researchers have found 30 other variants of the MTHFR enzyme and tested about 15 of them, “and more than half interfere with the function of the enzyme, producing a hundred-fold range of enzyme activity. The majority of these can be either partially or completely restored to normal activity by adding more folate.
And that is a surprise,” Rine said.

Most scientists think that harmful mutations are disfavored by evolution, but Rine pointed out that this applies only to mutations that affect reproductive fitness. Mutations that affect our health in later years are not efficiently removed by evolution and may remain in our genome forever.

The health effects of tuning up this enzyme in humans are unclear, he said, but folate is already known to protect against birth defects and seems to protect against heart disease and cancer. At least one defect in the MTHFR enzyme produces elevated levels in the blood of the metabolite homocysteine, which is linked to an increased risk of heart disease and stroke, conditions that typically affect people in their post-reproductive years.

“In those people, supplementation of folate in the diet can reduce levels of that metabolite and reduce disease risk,” Marini said.

Marini and Rine estimate that the average person has five rare mutant enzymes, and perhaps other not-so-rare variants, that could be improved with vitamin or mineral supplements.

“There are over 600 human enzymes that use vitamins or minerals as cofactors, and this study reports just what we found by studying one of them,” Rine said. “What this means is that, even if the odds of an individual having a defect in one gene is low, with 600 genes, we are all likely to have some mutations that limit one or more of our enzymes.”

The subtle effects of variation in enzyme activity may well account for conflicting results of some clinical trials, including the confusing data on the effect of vitamin supplements, he noted. In the future, the enzyme profile of research subjects will have to be taken into account in analyzing the outcome of clinical trials.

If one considers not just vitamin-dependent enzymes but all the 30,000 human proteins in the genome, “every individual would harbor approximately 250 deleterious substitutions considering only the low-frequency variants.

These numbers suggest that the aggregate incidence of low-frequency variants could have a significant physiological impact,” the researchers wrote in their paper.

All the more reason to poke around in one’s genome, Rine said. “If you don’t give people a reason to become interested in their genome and to become comfortable with their personal genomic information, then the benefits of much of the biomedical research, which is indexed to particular genetic states, won’t be embraced in a time frame that most people can benefit from,” Rine said. “So, my motivation is partly scientific, partly an education project and, in some ways, a partly political project.”

Marini and Rine credit Bruce Ames, a UC Berkeley professor emeritus of molecular and cell biology now on the research staff at Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute, with the research that motivated them to look at enzyme variation. Ames found in the 1970s that many bacteria that could not produce a specific amino acid could do so if given more vitamin B6, and in recent years he has continued exploring the link between micronutrients and health.

“Looked at in one way, Bruce found that you can cure a genetic disease in bacteria by treating it with vitamins,” Rine said. Because the human genome contains about 6 billion DNA base pairs, each one subject to mutation, there could be between 3 and 6 million DNA sequence differences between any two people. Given those numbers, he reasoned that, as in bacteria, “there should be people who are genetically different in terms of the amount of vitamin needed for optimal performance of their enzymes.”

This touches on what Rine considers one of the key biomedical questions today. “Now that we have the complete genome sequences of all the common model organisms, including humans, it’s obvious that the defining challenge of biology in the 21st century is not what the genes are, but what the variation in the genes does,” he said.

Rine, Marini and their colleagues are continuing to study variation in the human MTHFR gene as well as other folate utilizing enzymes, particularly with respect to how defects in these enzymes may lead to birth defects. Rine also is taking advantage of the 1,500 students in his Biology 1A lab course to investigate variants of a second vitamin B6-dependent enzyme, cystathionine beta-synthase.

He also is investigating how enzyme cofactors like vitamins and minerals fix defective enzymes. He suspects that supplements work by acting as chaperones to stabilize the proper folding of the enzyme, which is critical to its catalytic activity. “That is a new principle that may be applicable to drug design,” Rine said.

Coauthors with Rine and Marini are UC Berkeley research assistant Jennifer Gin and Janet Ziegle, Kathryn Hunkapiller Keho, David Ginzinger and Dennis A. Gilbert of Applied Biosystems, which also funded part of the study. The work was supported by a University of California Discovery Grant, DARPA and the National Institutes of Health.

When will I receive my DNA Assessment Kit?

DNA Assessment Kits are typically mailed within one week of enrollment.

Are the DNA assessments corrective or preventative?

Neither. Our Healthy Aging DNA Assessment™  and Skin Aging Assessment™ is simply an assessment.

Will I ever have to be re-tested?

There is no need to retake the LifeMap Healthy Aging DNA Assessment™ as your genes never change. In terms of testing DNA, your DNA is the same throughout your entire life.

What is the advantage of the LifeMap Healthy Aging (DNA) Assessment™?

The LifeMap Healthy Aging Assessment™ helps provide a scientific basis for more accurately predicting the unique nutritional supplement needs of each individual. The assessment results create a matrix to guide your custom tailored nutritional supplement regimen and to help you achieve optimal health and well being. You might say it’s the difference between shooting an arrow at a target in the dark versus shooting an arrow at a target at high noon.

What are SNPs and why is this information important?

SNPs (pronounced “snips”) are single nucleotide polymorphisms, which are small but common natural variations in human DNA. Each person’s genetic material contains a unique SNP pattern attached to the DNA strand that serves as the “body’s instruction book”, telling the body in minute detail how to do everything from making bone cells to processing dietary cholesterol to detoxifying spent hormones in the liver.

Just as no two people are identical, so every instruction book is different. Each person has several million SNPs that account for the wide variations seen in the spectrum of human appearance and physiology. Some of these processes that are dictated by SNPs and gene expression are more efficient and supportive of health than others. By determining a SNP profile, it is possible to discover which areas are strong and which areas need extra support.

How does the LifeMap Healthy Aging Assessment™ DNA collection process work?

The DNA Collection process begins with a comfortable, easy-to-perform cheek swab to collect a DNA specimen. Gently swab the inside of your cheek, and then allow the swab to dry in the drying rack that is included with your collection kit. The dried swab is then placed in a special envelope and sent to our lab for analysis. You will receive the results of the assessment in about 2-3 weeks with your LifeMap product and/or your report will be made available in your online “back office” which is a password protected personal website assigned to you when you enroll as an affiliate.

Why shouldn’t I just take handfuls of dietary supplements to cover everything?

Although you can purchase and use a wide variety of nutritional supplements, most health care practitioners would agree that this is neither economical, nor practical. By understanding your predispositions, from a DNA SNP perspective, we are able to create an individualized nutritional supplement program specifically for you. This targeted approach (rather than a shotgun, or one-size-fits-all supplement approach) ultimately helps save you time, money and more importantly focuses your regimen on key areas that are important to your individual physiology.

What does the process involve?

Everything needed to obtain a DNA specimen is included in the DNA collection kit. It’s so easy that you can perform the collection in less than five minutes. Swab the inside of your mouth (the inner cheek) several times with the sterile swabs included in the kit. It’s fast, painless and simple.

The swabs are then air-dried for five minutes in the provided stand, using care never to touch or contaminate the tip of the swab (full and easy-to-follow instructions are included with every collection kit). The specimen is then mailed in the pre-addressed, postage-paid envelope.

What is the SNP analysis process and is it confidential?

All SNP collection kits, swab and mailing envelopes are bar-coded for tracking and confidentiality.

After receiving the swabs, the lab confirms and uploads the bar-coded sample for confidentiality, tracking and control.

The DNA is extracted from the swab and the lab amplifies the region of the DNAcontaining the SNP. The technique used to amplify the individual’s DNA is called a polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

The SNP is then detected by using a proprietary technology and a variety of important quality control systems are in place to ensure accuracy and repeatability.

The results of the detected SNPs are then analyzed and compiled by specially programmed computers and translated electronically into a confidential report called a LifeMap Healthy Aging Assessment™.

How do you choose which SNPs are evaluated in GeneWize LifeMap Healthy Aging ™ DNA assessment?

Although human DNA contains millions of SNPs, GeneLink scientist used the following criteria to choose the SNPs for the GeneWize LifeMap Healthy Aging ™ DNA Assessment:

1. Valid – The existence of the SNP is supported by solid, credible scientific evidence. Gene SNPs are added as knowledge progresses.
2. Important – A SNP predicts biochemical processes that associate with significant, specific physiologic disadvantages.
3. Frequent – The SNP frequency is relatively common among the general population.
4. Actionable – A SNP’s negative potential can be ameliorated by nutritional formulations (for example).

What is the science that ties nutritional supplementation and lifestyle changes to the predisposition marked by the SNPs?

Leading clinical evidence is increasingly linking SNPs to specific nutritional needs. For example: The SNP for methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) produces an enzyme with decreased affinity for its direct substrate, 5, 10 methylene-THF, which can cause a build-up of homocysteine. In plain English, it means that some people make more homocysteine than others, and now you are able find out if this applies to you.

Those who make more homocysteine would especially benefit by increasing Folate in their diet, as well as starting dietary supplements that are clinically shown to reduce homocysteine.

Another example concerns individuals with the SNP for paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) who have an enhanced propensity for superior cardiac health because they more effectively block oxidation of LDL cholesterol. This means these people will have less oxidized LDL cholesterol than others. This SNP can also determine how effective vitamin C and vitamin E are as antioxidants in specific individuals.

How accurate is GeneWize Life Science’s DNA assessment technology?

Several methods are used to determine DNA polymorphisms (SNPs). GeneWize LifeMap Healthy Aging Assessment™ uses the Single Base Chain Extension (SBCE) assay, which is the most accurate method available and which identifies the SNP directly on the DNA. The profile accuracy is nearly 100%. In addition, the assay is performed robotically and the DNA strand is evaluated in both directions, which virtually eliminates human error in sample manipulation. To ensure accuracy, Coriel and sentinel samples are routinely used to test and verify the results.

Will I need a prescription for the assessment?

No. The GeneWize LifeMap Healthy Aging Assessment™ is classified as non-medical test and does not require a physician’s prescription. However, many healthcare practitioners are administering genetic assessments as a way to help them deliver personalized preventive healthcare to their patients.

What is GeneWize Life Science’s privacy policy?

GeneWize Life Science’s respects the privacy of every individual and has taken many precautions to create a process that allows individuals to maintain the highest level of privacy. All information provided by the individual taking the assessment is kept on a secure server and all samples are identified by barcode only. This information is never shared with a third party. Does the buccal cheek swab DNA analysis provide the same information as with blood sample or other body parts? A cheek swab collection is easy but is it the best DNA to sample?

Most DNA testing is done today using samples collected through buccal swabbing, or cheek swabbing. Scientists agree that buccal swab samples are just as reliable as blood samples for DNA testing. DNA is the same in every cell of the body. A cheek cell collected through buccal swabbing contains the same DNA as a blood cell collected through a blood draw. However, buccal swab samples have these primary benefits: Buccal swabbing is easy to do. Buccal swabbing is painless and noninvasive. It can even be safely performed on a newborn infant. Buccal swabs are more reliable than blood samples for patients who’ve recently had blood transfusions or bone marrow transplants. Such patients’ blood may show the presence of the donors’ DNA.

How can understanding your genes give you a longer, healthier life?

Your health is a result of interactions between your genes and lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, stress, smoking and alcohol. It is your genetic make-up that determines which nutrients are used and how they are used; the way toxins are removed, what happens to any waste products and how efficient and effective these key processes are working within your body. Are gene variations always harmful?

No. Many gene variations have no effect on our body systems or our health and in certain cases these variations can even be beneficial. However, sometimes a variation can make the gene send misinformation or a “garbled” message to the cell. Upon receiving the garbled message, the cell will manufacture a product – such as an enzyme – that doesn’t work exactly (or as efficiently) as it should; the variant enzyme may, for example, work faster or more slowly than is best for the body. Combined with an unhealthy diet or lifestyle, such a gene variation may make a person more susceptible to developing certain conditions or in some cases certain illnesses.

If I have variations in my genes, can these be corrected?

Genes are found in every cell of the body. Therefore, for the correction to be effective, scientists must find a way to reach every single cell. This is an enormous challenge for gene therapy, an experimental procedure that is attempted only in serious genetic diseases caused by a single defective gene, such as cystic fibrosis. In contrast, the variations screened for by GeneWize are fairly common in the general population, and their presence does not, by any means predict that you will become ill. It would thus be both impractical and inappropriate to attempt to physically ‘correct’ these commonly occurring variations – even if the technology existed to make this possible.

Can the Healthy Aging Assessment tell me if I will develop a serious inherited illness, such as Huntington’s disease?

No, we don’t screen for any inherited disorders that are not affected by diet and lifestyle, such as Huntington’s disease. These are relatively rare disorders, known as single-gene diseases because they are caused by a defect in only one gene.

Will the Healthy Aging Assessment decode my complete genome?

No, decoding a complete genome is a massive task. The Human Genome Project has mapped and deciphered the complete genomes of only a few individuals; this has taken many years of work and an international network of research centers to accomplish. We are lucky to be able to benefit from what has been discovered thus far in this complex and exciting project and GeneWize Life Sciences™ can deliver some of the benefits directly to health conscious customers like you in a simple, accurate yet economical service.

We examine only a limited number of specific SNPs in the whole genome; these SNPs for the most part are “heavy lifter SNPs” known to code for metabolic enzymes that are crucial to long-term health and well being.

Will the Gene SNP test be able to tell me whether I am ill?

No, we can only determine what type of genes SNPs people have and how they relate to certain metabolic factors involved in well-being. In nearly all cases, these genes will be the same whether a person is well or ill. If you think you may be ill, you should consult your doctor.

Where do I find information on the research used?

Why don’t we use the supplement quercertin in our formulas?

In general we like the clinical information about quercertin and up until recently we were planning on using quercertin in our formulas. However we removed quercitin due to potential problems with this ingredient (and the FDA) involving its GRAS status (Generally Recognized as Safe). When the FDA finally rules on this ingredient’s status and we see more supporting information regarding its safety we will consider adding it back in to our formulations where appropriate.

Is it true that some major vitamin manufacturers use synthetic versions of the vitamins listed on their label, and that some people believe your body can’t absorb most of what’s in synthetic products?

Professionals have somewhat conflicting views and opinions concerning the use of synthetic vitamin supplements and to the best of our knowledge there have not been valid studies on this subject. GeneWize Life Sciences uses mostly natural and organic ingredients when possible, however depending upon your formula, about 5 to 10% of our current compensating ingredients are synthetic. What percent of the formula will be food based?

Do people with allergies to milk, corn, and tomatoes need to be concerned?

What are SNPs and why is this information important?

SNPs (pronounced “snips”) are single nucleotide polymorphisms, which are small but common natural variations in human DNA. Each person’s genetic material contains a unique SNP pattern attached to the DNA strand that serves as the body’s instruction book, telling the body in minute detail how to do everything from making bone cells to processing dietary cholesterol to detoxifying spent hormones in the liver. Just as no two people are identical, so every instruction book is different. Each person has several million SNPs that account for the wide variations seen in the spectrum of human appearance and physiology. Some of these processes that are dictated by SNPs and gene expression are more efficient and supportive of health than others. By determining a SNP profile, it is possible to discover which areas are strong and which areas need extra support.

How do you choose which SNPs are evaluated in a GeneWize LifeMap Healthy Aging ™ DNA assessment?

Although human DNA contains millions of SNPs, GeneLink scientist used the following criteria to choose the SNPs for the GeneWize LifeMap Healthy Aging ™ DNA assessment:

1. Valid – The existence of the SNP is supported by solid, credible scientific evidence. Gene SNPs are added as knowledge progresses.
2. Important – A SNP predicts biochemical processes that associate with significant, specific physiologic disadvantages.
3. Frequent – The SNP frequency is relatively common among the general population.
4. Actionable – A SNP’s negative potential can be modulated by nutritional formulations (for example).

What is the science that ties nutritional supplementation and lifestyle changes to the predisposition marked by the SNPs?

Leading clinical evidence is increasingly linking SNPs to specific nutritional needs. For example: The SNP for methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) produces an enzyme with decreased affinity for its direct substrate, 5, 10 methylene-THF, which can cause a build-up of homocysteine. In plain English, it means that some people make more homocysteine than others, and now you are able find out if this applies to your patients. Those who make more homocysteine would especially benefit by increasing Folate in their diet, as well as starting dietary supplements that are clinically shown to reduce homocysteine.

Another example concerns individuals with the SNP for paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) who have an enhanced propensity for superior cardiac health because they more effectively block oxidation of LDL cholesterol. How accurate is GeneWize Life Science’s DNA assessment technology?

Several methods are used to determine DNA polymorphisms (SNPs). GeneWize LifeMap Healthy Aging Assessment™ uses the Single Base Chain Extension (SBCE) assay, which is the most accurate method available and which identifies the SNP directly on the DNA. The profile accuracy is nearly 100%. In addition, the assay is performed robotically and the DNA strand is evaluated in both directions, which virtually eliminates human error in sample manipulation.

Does the buccal cheek swab DNA analysis provide the same information as with blood sample or other body parts? A cheek swab collection is easy but is it the best DNA to sample?

Most DNA testing is done today using samples collected through buccal swabbing, or cheek swabbing. Scientists agree that buccal swab samples are just as reliable as blood samples for DNA testing. DNA is the same in every cell of the body. A cheek cell collected through buccal swabbing contains the same DNA as a blood cell collected through a blood draw.

However, buccal swab samples have these primary benefits:

1. Buccal swabbing is easy to do. Buccal swabbing is painless and noninvasive. It can even be safely performed on a newborn infant.
2. Buccal swabs are more reliable than blood samples for patients who’ve recently had blood transfusions or bone marrow transplants. Such patients’ blood may show the presence of the donors’ DNA.

Are gene variations always harmful?

Going back as far as prehistoric times, the observation and
knowledge of genetic traits was used in agriculture and in the
raising of livestock to improve abundance and success for farmers
and pastoralists. However, the modern science of genetics, which
seeks to understand the process of inheritance, only began with
the work of Gregor Mendel in the mid-1800s. Although Mendel did
not know the bio-chemical basis for heredity, he observed that
organisms inherit traits in an isolated manner—these basic units
of inheritance are now called genes.

In the 21st century, almost every adult has heard and knows the
term DNA. DNA stands for Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid. DNA is a
nucleic acid that consists of two long chains of nucleotides
twisted together into a double helix. The appearance of the
molecule looks like a spiraling ladder. DNA carries the cell’s
genetic information and hereditary characteristics via its
nucleotides and their sequence.

The term ‘Gene’ correspond to regions within DNA. The sequence of
the molecular components (called nucleotides) found in a section
of DNA make up the genetic information organisms inherit. This is
known as the genetic code. The unique genetic code found in each
organism form the foundation of the unique traits expressed in
each organism or individual.

Each strand of DNA can act as a template for creating a new
partner strand—this is the physical method for making copies of
genes that can be inherited. The sequence of nucleotides can be
‘read’ through other chemical processes in a cells to produce a
chain of amino acids. These amino acids are proteins, and the
order of amino acids in a protein corresponds to the order of
nucleotides in the gene – the genetic code.

The amino acids in a protein determine how it folds into a
three-dimensional shape, and this structure is responsible for
the protein’s function. Proteins carry out almost all of the
functions needed for cells to live. A small change to an
organism’s DNA can mean a change in the structure of a protein’s
amino acids. These subtle changes will then correspond to the
protein’s shape and function. The end results can mean a dramatic
effect in the cell and on the organism as a whole. Hence, an
organism’s genetic code, although so deeply contained in the
inner molecular structure or an organism’s cells, has powerful
influence over the health and function of an individual.
