Arquetipo del cambio planetario: Camila Vallejo, la bella líder del movimiento estudiantil chileno

El movimiento estudiantil de Chile ha congregado a cientos de miles de personas en ese país, ganándose también el apoyo de una juventud ávida de vivir una transformación social en distintos lugares de América Latina. A diferencia de lo sucedido en las llamadas “primaveras árabes”, lo que está sucediendo en Chile, hasta el momento, no tiene ningún indicio de haber sido cooptado y trastornado por la clase política en el poder y las élites financieras que en ocasiones ejercen su influencia desde el extranjero; por el contrario, mantiene una vibrante legitimidad y se despliega con un vigoroso potencial de orquestar un cambio sustancial, real y posiblemente capaz de estremecer las estructuras que históricamente reprimen el desarrollo de la juventud y de las clases sociales mariginadas por el capitalismo.

La figura descollante que lidera este movimiento masivo es Camila Vallejo Dowling, una joven de 23 años, presidenta de la Federación de Estudiantes de la Universidad de Chile (FECH) —la segunda mujer en toda la historia de esta universidad en ocupar esta dirigencia—, hija de padres comunistas (su padre es también actor) e insoslayablemente atractiva e inteligente. Camila se ha convertido en una celebridad, llevando, a veces por razones ajenas a la esencia del conflicto, esta protesta estudiantil más allá de las fronteras de Chile y en general aumentando su difusión mediática.

Vivimos, sin duda, en una sociedad que se deja llevar por el poder de la imagen y que consume los modelos de vida que las celebridades, consciente o inconscientemente, promueven dentro del aparato propagandístico cuya función es mantener el statu quo. Pero si bien las celebridades sirven, casi inescapablemente, al modelo socioeconómico (y psicosocial) que enaltece los valores del consumo —y por añadidura de la enajenación, al intercambiar la individuación por el deseo aspiracional—, el caso de Camila —figura mediática y también in-mediata generatrix de la movilización callejera— por un momento parece hackear este paradigma para usarlo a su favor, como en un movimiento de judo (el objetivo de este arte marcial es “derribar al oponente usando la fuerza del mismo”) y exponenciar la fuerza de las voces silenciadas —por amenazantes al sistema pero también por ser inefectivas para la propagación de un mensaje dentro de la estructura particular de estos difusores de realidades programadas. Quizás sea un poco el furor del sueño que despierta (simbólicamente enarbolado por la mujer), pero Camila parece ser una celebridad que, excepcionalmente, se merece su notoriedad —más allá de su belleza, que galvaniza— ya que promueve una serie de valores que estimulan los principios básicos del humanismo, la libertad y la conciencia, y su misma imagen iterada se rebela frente a la cultura de las celebridades como un seductor virus que inyecta, en Helena, un Caballo de Troya.

“Desde los días del Subcomandante Marcos de los Zapatistas no ha habido un líder rebelde que haya fascinado tanto a América Latina. Esta vez no hay pasamontañas, no hay pipa ni pistola, solo un anillo de plata en la nariz”, dice el diario británico The Guardian sobre Camila. Pero más allá de la estética de la rebeldía y su profundo encantamiento, lo que sostiene y propulsa a la figura de Camila Vallejo es la fuerza de su movimiento (que genera marchas multitudinarias de una magnitud que no se había visto por décadas en Chile) y la claridad de su discurso. La directiz de la protesta estudiantil pacífica es la exigencia básica de eliminar la concepción usurera de la educación que, en la práctica, permea Chile, país donde los estudiantes muchas veces tienen que endeudarse para completar una educación que luego difícilmente les significará oportunidades de trabajo para poder pagar dichas deudas —en una versión moderna y sofisticada de esclavitud. Esta petición de educación superior gratuita va más allá de la mera retórica política y representa una amenaza para el sistema hegemónico porque significa en el fondo un empoderamiento de la juventud alejada de la élite a la que históricamente han mermado no solo económica sino también intelectualmente. Una juventud que de alzarse no tendrá contemplaciones en dar al traste el viejo sistema —y a sus sacerdotes— de manera radical. La misma Camila de algunas claves:

“Siempre es la juventud la que se mueve primero… no tenemos compromisos familiares, esto nos permite ser más libres. Tomamos el primer paso, pero ya no estamos solos, las viejas generaciones se han unido a la lucha”.

Más allá de la “utopía” de la educación gratuita:

“Nosotros creemos que es posible, a través de una reforma tributaria, de la recaudación de impuestos, especialmente a las grandes empresas, sobre todo a las mineras, que un 70% son privadas y que obtienen grandes ganancias de su operación en el país. Un solo dato: con las utilidades declaradas de una sola empresa minera, La Escondida, se podría financiar toda la educación del país: matrículas, profesores, investigación, etc.”.

En Chile, el 60% del país vive con menos de 165,000 pesos mensuales per cápita (cerca de 180 euros) y prácticamente el 80% de la población vive endeudada. Camila aclara que desde la dictadura militar de Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990) “el Estado trasladó al mercado la responsabilidad de educar” a los jóvenes chilenos, implentando un régimen de capitalismo educativo, o un esquema que hace negocio de la formación del pueblo chileno.

“En Chile se instauró el modelo neoliberal en la educación y el Estado redujo sus aportes. Hoy el costo de la educación superior descansa en las familias, que tienen que endeudarse para educar a sus hijos. Lo que buscamos es recuperar la educación pública”, indicó.

La lucha de Camila y de millones de chilenos es fundamentada por Noam Chomsky, quien recalca en que la privatización de la universidad pública «significa la privatización para los ricos [y] un nivel más bajo de formación más bien técnica para el resto».

Por otro lado, Camila, musa querida indudablemente por los medios alternativos e inevitablemente difundida por los medios mainstream ante su magnética personalidad, no suaviza ni compromete su discurso para ganar tiempo aire:

“Los periódicos pertenecen en un 98% a dos grandes conglomerados que prácticamente poseen una misma línea editorial, muy ligada a los sectores conservadores, por lo que son un gran obstáculo para buscar el apoyo ciudadano. Los diarios suelen desinformar al descontextualizar las declaraciones de los estudiantes, tergiversar nuestras demandas o simplemente evadir hechos sociales importantes. Los canales de televisión abierta tampoco son muy distintos. Suelen dar mensajes tendenciosos y parcelados, sin cumplir con su labor de informar objetivamente ni de ser pluralistas. De hecho, en muchas ocasiones, cuando los noticieros hablan sobre educación o del movimiento estudiantil, muestran imágenes de encapuchados o de destrozos, promoviendo una imagen errónea de nuestro movimiento”.

Actualmente Camila supera al presidente Sebastián Piñera con un 68 por ciento de aprobación, a diferencia del 40% (algunas encuestas lo dan más bajo) que tiene el mandatario amigo de David Rockefeller. Tal vez por eso funcionarios del gobierno de Piñera han llamado, a través de Twitter, ”a matar la perra para que se acabe la leva” (haciendo eco de la sentencia de muerte que recibió Allende). También se han ventilado en Internet sus datos personales, para fomentar un asfixiante acoso. Pero por otro lado, y doblemente esperanzador ante la lamentable situación de la izquierda en muchos países del continente, Camila —y no hay que olvidar a sus compañeros como Giorgo Jackson de la Católica— parece estar agrupando e inspirando a los líderes de la izquierda en la zona. Los diarios cubanos comunistas se desviven elogiando a la líder estudiantil (Granma, la llama “una luz en el camino”); el vicepresidente de Bolivia ha dicho (en un sentir que compartimos): “Todos estamos enamorados de ella”; e incluso ha sido mimada por el grupo de alta conciencia social Calle 13.

Pero nada de esto, en apariencia, parece desubicar a esta templada joven comunista que a los 14 años ya había leído al anarquista Mikhail Bakunin y que confiesa que su película favorita es El Club de la Pelea (el mismo film que inspira al interesantísimo movimiento hacktivista Project Mayhem 2012). Ante la crítica y en los momentos de euforia colectiva, Camila exhibe un sutil control de sí misma, un dominio y una mesura que sorprende e hipnotiza, una especie de reposo que le permite analizar y recanalizar situaciones desde un secreto atalaya interior —como si fuera la niña índigo de una nueva generación política capaz de amansar los ataques de los lobos y liberar los atavismos de la vieja guardia empotrada en la cima de la pirámide. Así se levanta brillante la aguerrida poética de la nueva revolución social.

“SOY LA DESTRUCTORA DE MUNDOS”.

El usuario rnunezb hace decir a Camila Vallejo, en un video de YouTube, “Soy la destructora de mundos”. Esto es especialmente simbólico, ya que parafrasea y feminiza una frase ligada a Shiva, el dios hinduista de la destrucción (que en su reverso revela la creación). Shiva simboliza la potencia masculina, el kundalini desde el culto fálico, pero también la necesidad de destruir para poder manifestar una transformación verdadera. Aunque quizás sea un exceso hiperbólico asociar estos conceptos con Camila Vallejo, estimulados por “la estética de la rebeldía” y lo que llamamos la “posesión arquetípica”, vislumbrando con voluntad —también onírica— una nueva época de liberación y de despertar, en la cual la mujer posiblemente asuma un rol protagónico —al menos con el mismo poder de guíar y servir de ejemplo para el colectivo que el que ha detentado en los últimos siglos —para detrimento del ecosistema— el hombre.

El escritor Antonio Velasco Piña, autor de Regina, uno de los libros más emblemáticos del movimiento estudiantil del 68 en México, sugirió de manera criptomística, junto a su maestro Ayocuán, que “la mujer dormida debe de dar a luz”: heraldo blanco de un cambio de conciencia en el planeta. Tal vez el nuevo papel de la mujer no solo es dar a luz, también es destruir el viejo mundo para que pueda nacer el nuevo. Sin recurrir a mesianismos y demás síntomas de una conciencia pueril no individuada, la figura de Camila podría ser simplemente simbólica e inspiradora para las mujeres en el mundo y también para los hombres, estimulando la necesidad de elevar la conciencia a un nuevo entendimiento de género.

“Elegí Geografia después de leer la malla curricular (plan de estudios). Vinculaba dos áreas, físicas y humanas, que me parecían interesantes. El territorio es un libro abierto a través del cual se puede hacer una lectura de los acontecimientos”, explica Camila, egresada de Geografía, la ciencia humana de la Tierra. Para aquellos de nosotros que gustamos de los símbolos y de los vuelos sintéticos de la imaginación quizás no sea menor que esta joven muse politik haya elegido estudiar esta disciplina que la conecta en cierta forma con la Madre Tierra. Según la milenaria tradición esotérica de distintas culturas, la mujer es esencialmente la encarnación (o la transpersonalización) de la Madre Tierra (Gaia, Pachamama, María, Isis; y Kali-Coatlicue, en su acepción destructora). Uno de los paradigmas que a todas luces deben de modificarse para la evolución de nuestra especie es nuestra relación con el planeta y la naturaleza —una entidad que para las culturas indígenas está viva y está siendo herida por nuestro sistema económico capitalista y nuestra visión atomista. Camila, la joven comunista (anti-consumista) en este sentido es representante natural de este profundo pleito ecológico que es sobre todo un dilema de conciencia, posiblemente de tener conciencia de que la Tierra está viva y de que somos parte de ella. Así, un líder de un movimiento colectivo que busca aumentar la conciencia colectiva a través de la educación, pero también de tomar cuenta del poder de la unión del pueblo, sirve como vocera de la Tierra, al igual que de las voces oprimidas de su país.

Cuestionada en repetidas ocasiones por los efectos que tiene su belleza física en el interés que ha generado el movimiento estudiantil chileno, Camila ha dicho que, más allá de desear que esto no desvirtúe el mensaje de fondo y baje el nivel de discusión, ella no desdeña la utilización de este mecanismo, bajo las condiciones que rigen la realidad consensual, para el beneficio de su lucha. Y es que más allá de la lucha por la iguladad de género, yace la importancia de la diferencia, de que cada quien pueda manifestarse en su totalidad como individuo —es decir, no tendría porque no ser ella misma en toda su extensión con todo lo que esto implica.

Otra vertiente interesante del caso de Camila entronca con lo que es originalmente, en su sentido más amplio, la belleza, la cual trasciende el cuerpo pero tampoco lo desdeña. Platón encontró una relación prístina de identidad entre belleza, bondad y verdad, arquetipos celestes que debían reflejarse en este mundo como portales para alcanzar las más altas virtudes. El poeta John Keats, como continuación platónica dijo: “Truth is beauty; beauty is truth”. La belleza que puede intercambiarse con la verdad es aquella que emana de la profundidad del ser y toca las fibras profundas —ideas— sobre las que se construye el mundo: la estética necesariamente involucra una ética y la seducción cierta inteligencia.

La belleza de Camila es integral, no puede dividirse (es su elocuencia, su cara y su cuerpo, su inteligencia, su valentía y lo que se transparenta de su espíritu) y en este sentido nos enseña, de manera holística, que el ser humano debe considerarse como un todo, alejándonos del atomismo. Nos enseña también a percibir a las personas integralmente. En cierta forma nos avasalla motivándonos, ya que al escucharla y verla sabemos que el burdo deseo se aniquila —sabemos que todos aquellos que objetifican su cuerpo (y el de todas la mujeres) y que surfean buscando sus “fotos sexies” en la red o que no esuchan lo que dice y solo se huelgan lascivamente en su superficie imaginal, no podrán tener un intercambio real con una persona verdaderamente bella, la radical otredad que nos lleva al descubrimiento del propio ser y de la cual, en este caso mediatizado, Camila es un símbolo.

Como un nuevo arquetipo embebido en la mente colectiva, Camila Vallejo es un ejemplo para hombres y mujeres. Para los hombres es un ejemplo de percepción de una nueva mujer, de la necesidad de ser capaz de apreciar la belleza física, incluso celebrarla, pero no quedarse ahí, de explorar la mente y el espíritu de la mujer, de escuchar y no solo ver, de entender y no poseer, de proveer seguridad pero para estimular la libertad; para la mujer es un claro ejemplo de desarrollo, de proactividad, sin perder su esencia —igualdad que exalta también la diferencia, la feminidad en su florecimiento. Es un ejemplo especialmente valioso para las mujeres que aún viven en el paradigma detectado en el poema de W.B. Yeats, “Adams Curse”:

“To be born woman is to know—
Although they do not talk of it at school—
That we must labour to be beautiful”.

["Nacer mujer es saber

—aunque no se dice en la escuela—

que debemos laborar para ser bellas"].

Esto es, una nueva forma de responder a la presión (y al beneficio) social de ser el “sexo bello”, mostrando que una mujer no tiene que sacrificar su belleza, sino todo lo contrario, si se afirma a sí misma y deja las frivolidades de una coquetería artificial, de una seducción basada en accesorios; belleza más allá del oropel, más allá del miedo y la debilidad. Mostar a las adolescentes —muchas de las cuales idolatran a la nueva Britney Spears, quien sea que sea en este momento (pronta seguramente a caer en la decadencia), y siguen a celebridades como modelos que en realidad representan versiones adaptadas del viejo arquetipo de la princesa cuya realización no está dada en ella misma, sino en el príncipe azul al cual debe de ser capaz de conquistar con cualquier artimaña, incluyendo la ilusiónd de la virginidad— que la belleza femenina crece con el desarrollo personal, con la inteligencia, el valor y, sobre todo, con el nivel de conciencia que se logre, mucho más que visitiendo la última prenda de diseñador o utilizando cosméticos y aprendiendo patrones de comportamiento programados por la sociedad para crear relaciones de poder, mismos que generalmente nos separan de la comunión erótica que es el principio de género en su danza.

En suma, si la sociedad en la que vivimos está dominada por la imagen y por el carácter aspiracional, el ejemplo de Camila es capaz de jugar con estos paradigmas que llevan a la enajenación y hackearlos, de hacerlos inspiracionales, para que lleven a la individuación, de exaltar los valores de la rebedía hacia el sistema dominante y afirmar la diversidad del ser. Quizás reactivar la energía poética que tienen la rebeldía y la revolución en su origen: la política (cósmica) como eje que nos propulse al siguiente estadio en nuestra evolución: del animal político hacia el humano alumbrado que despierta al planeta.

Steampunk Minions that Win You Over

A minion is a small figure that is devoted to serving his master. How about getting a minion of your own? It sure would not have life but yet can serve you in whatever it specializes. If you are finding this hard to believe do take a look at the minions created by artist Joseph Drust.

Drust has a whole line up of minions of various types but one of his best ones is the In’tendo minion. If you find the name to be resembling some other very popular product you are correct for the resemblance is not only in the name but also in functionality, to some extent. In’tendo comes from Nintendo and this little minion is capable of allowing you to play NES retail cartridges, except for the lightgun games. To believe this you must take a look at the minion first and understand its uniqueness.

The In’tendo minion is a perfect example of bringing about awesomeness into one small vinyl character. The shape, looks, features and finish are of the steampunk style of art that acquired prominence during the late 1980s and early 1990s. This might be a vinyl piece but does not look so one bit. Everything about this creation gives the feel of the art form of the Victorian age when steam was one major power source. The articles used in a steampunk creation often include materials that one would find in old industrial lots or science labs. The material can be anything like steel, iron, brass, copper, wood, and glass. The very same effect can be seen in the In’tendo which has been given a weathered gold finish. The joints and edges have been given a soldered effect to once again bring about the steampunk style.

The best part of the In’tendo is the fact that it is a USB powered creation which can enable you to play your NES cartridges on it. Insert the cartridge at the back of the figure and the LCD monitor in the front serves as the display. Using two infra red controllers you can enjoy your favorite games with a completely new experience.

In’tendo is sure one of the best of Drust’s creations but the others in this collection too are worth noticing. Some other USB powered minions include the Tesla, Periscope, Aerial, and many more. The magnetic Needle Minion serves as a keeper of all your paper pins as the figure attracts all ferrous metals. The 10 Lamest Superheros

Superheroes are the defenders of the Earth in times of need, those people who are beyond regular humans and the embodiment of everything we hold dear, but even they go wrong sometimes. For whichever reasons, cultural, or on purpose, sometimes it’s not the bad guys who hurt society as a whole, but the heroes themselves. How, you ask? Oh, we don’t know… maybe by sucking so bad that readers can’t help but stop taking the industry seriously as a whole, or setting back social issues a couple decades.

“But Walyou!…” – might be thinking our dear readers – “you must be wrong! Superheroes are awesome and geeky, and they couldn’t possibly go wrong!!”. Fine, don’t believe us? Okay, see for yourselves. This is Walyou’s 10 Lamest Superheros list.

1- Major Mapleleaf

Oh, we love Canada. They’re polite, they like maple syrup, and… well, they’re Canadians. “America’s hat, lol!”. We know there’s more to Canadians than this, but some artists and executives at Marvel Comics might not think the same. Introducing Mayor Mapleleaf:

His powers include asking thieves (very politely, mind you) to stop stealing, and pronouncing “about” as “a boot”. Or something like that. The writers don’t really explain where he got his powers from, but we know he fought alongside Captain America and Namor in World War II as a member of the Invaders. After a story arc where he bonded with Northstar from Canadian supergroup Alpha Flight over understanding the issues of AIDS (you know, because Northstar is gay), he disappeared into oblivion being eventually replaced by his son who looks like this:

2- Whitewash Jones

Whenever someone reads about comic book history, they learn that in the 40′s-50′s there was a huge controversy over what kind of material was appropriate for a comic book and what wasn’t. The new regulations by the Comic Code made the industry almost die by being overly restrictive, and writers argued that it was really hard to properly do a storyline, or create characters. Sure, this changed with time, but what were the things writers were getting away with before? Well, Whitewash Jones was one of those.

The hominid featured on the picture is whatever the artist thought a black man looked like, while his dialog, completely out of fashion, might be the most racist thing ever printed on a comic book. Whitewash Jones was a member of the young allies, whose powers were “making a harmonica talk” and “being good on de watermelon”. We guess that if the character was updated for today’s sensibilities, he’d eat at KFC and make love to “smooth operator”.

In all fairness, this is honestly how black people were depicted throughout the late 19th and early 20th century so it’s more society who has to be blamed over the artists themselves. Still, Whitewash secured himself a place on this list for setting back race issues a couple hundred years. Way to go, buddy!

3-Comet the super-horse

Superman must be a hard character to write, being that he’s invulnerable and all. Who’d you pit it against? And because eventually you run out of alien races and bald men to fight, sidekicks appear. First it was Jimmie Olsen, and Supergirl, and then, along came Comet.

Comet debuted in Action Comics 292 in 1962, and was one of the several animals with superpowers that appeared in that age. This period spawned characters as interesting as Streaky the Supercat and Beppo the Supermonkey but Comet had a twist: not only was he a superhorse, but he (it?) also had telepathic powers. He was originally a centaur in ancient Greece named Biron, whom the witch Circe gave a potion to turn him fully human, but by mistake made him fully horse instead. Once she realized what she had done, she gave him superpowers for the inconveniences caused. “Yeah, right, but where are my hands?”, must have thought Comet. After many adventures with Superman and Supergirl, a magic spell was cast that turned him into a human, but only while a comet passes through the solar system he is in. As a human, he adopted the identity of “Bronco” Bill Starr, a rodeo trick-rider, whom Supergirl fell in love with.

Also, apparently Supergirl is not the only girl crazy or insatiable enough to date a horse, as Lois Lane herself had a brief romance with him. Go Comet, what a pimp.

4- Super Malon

We have nothing against Argentineans, yours truly is one of them, in fact, but this absolutely deserves an entry. Do you ever wonder who patrols the streets of Buenos Aires at night? Well, Super Malon does, of course.

This bunch of cheap knock-offs are somehow inspired by the Argentinean gaucho (basically, a South American cowboy of sorts). Writers were lazy and didn’t really provide them with a proper back story or origins for the most part, but the team is composed by Cachiru (the Hawkman-Batman rip-off), La Salamanca, who possesses elemental powers, and has the ability to astrally project her spirit self (After doing peyote, we guess), El Yaguareté, the flash knock-off with super speed wearing a Jaguar skin costume…

Other members include Cimarrón, a sword wielding swashbuckling hero, Lobizón (who’s pretty much wolverine), Pampero, who can control wind currents, and two heroes that pretty much deserve entries of their own in this list. El Bagual, whose power is having a horse head, and Vizacacha, the master thief and acrobat. Yeah. Also, they fight this guy:

El Mazorquero (“the corn guy”), who is a serious contender for the least-threatening villain ever. Luckily the writers decided to pass on Super Messi, or Bat-Maradona.

5- The Red Bee

You knew it was coming, and Walyou dares not to disappoint. Appearing for the first time in 1940s in “Hit Comics #1″ , here’s the Red Bee.

His powers range from a horrendous fashion sense (god dammit, those pants! That shirt!) to doing nothing in particular at all. Yep, just like Batman, he doesn’t have any particular super-powers. But unlike the Dark Knight, instead of relying on a life-long training in martial arts and physical preparation, Red Bee’s modus operandi consists in using his faithful bee (oh god) that resides in his belt. “Beware, criminals, if you don’t let go of your weapons, my bee will sting you!”. Man, what a loser.

6- Zan and Jayna (The Wonder Twins from Superfriends)

Oh, boy, the Wonder Twins. They might be the most well-known pair on this list thanks to their inclusion in the “Superfriends” TV show by Hanna-Barbera, although for all the wrong reasons.

Let’s skip the part where their ridiculously hideous purple outfits are discussed and go straight up to their powers: they’re basically alien shapeshifters. Zan, the guy, can turn into water in any state, whereas Jayna, the girl, can turn into any animal. While this sounds pretty cool, their adventures usually included Jayna turning into Eagle, so she could carry pet monkey Gleek, so he could carry a bucket that carried Zan in water form. A bit redundant, right? Also, the pet monkey, Gleek, looked like this:

Their fashion sense, while pretty bad, at least is consistent as the monkey’s costume is equally hideous. Also, what is wrong with his face? Did the monkey kill a chipmunk and decided to wear it’s dead body, painted blue?

7-Aqualad

Let’s face it: until his make-over, it was hard to take Aquaman seriously. His superpowers were diving and talking to fish. Yeah, very useful, Aquaman, now let’s see you trying to stop Osama Bin Laden. Even today he’s still thought of as a joke outside the people who knows what’s going on in his comics. Well, then, once we’ve assumed that, what can we say about his sidekick, Aqualad?

We know young sidekicks can go right sometimes, just look at Robin, who became pretty badass after he found out about pants. But Aqualad, man, he just screams cheap. His powers include being Aquaman lite, with a slightly less embarrassing shade of orange as shirt, and being the son of a deposed, murdered king of an underwater kingdom. Or so he claimed after eating poisonous jellyfish.

8-Big Bertha

Big Bertha was a walking joke no matter where you looked. She was one of those “new” super-heroes from the late 80′s-mid 90′s that disappeared into oblivion because no one cared. Her powers revolved around growing fatter (How is that a superpower? I can do the same by sitting on my ass and eating Doritos while I work). I know what you might be thinking, “oh, but this is a positive message, you can be fat and still be a superhero, man, screw all those super-heroines that look like models!”. Yeah, right, except she could also remove the fat and become a super-model herself, killing every conceivable positive message in the process.

9-Squirrel Girl

Read the frame above. Not even Iron Man can believe how much she sucks. Now imagine the context where Squirrel Girl could save anyone. Yeah, we can’t come up with anything either. Writers at Marvel Comics really hit an all-time low when they decided to create a super-heroine whose power was summoning squirrels to her aid. We can just picture her trying to stop a bank robbery, summoning a bunch of Squirrels. You know, the same animals who run away from everything because they can’t fight.

10-Wing

We couldn’t finish this list without a really racist Asian stereotype. Wing is the valet and chauffeur of the Crimson Avenger, a superhero from the 40′s. He’s a Chinese immigrant who moved to America in order to escape Japanese persecution, and has no powers at all. He’s good at martial arts (“Because he’s chinese”, must have been what the authors thought), and that’s it. It’s funny, though, how the Crimson Avenger refuses to drive even after changing to his secret identity, and decided it was totally appropriate to have his chauffeur get his own costume, event though they drive the same car (“no one will suspect anything, Wing!”). Also, he talks like this:

Luckily, all recent continuity absolutely ignores the character. The only thing we know about him is a vague reference about how he “sacrificed his life to defeat the cosmic being known as the Nebula Man, a creature who scatters the other Soldiers through time”. Yeah, right. And Poochie died on his way back to his home planet.

Redditor leftoverusername has shared a way to mess with your Facebook URL that allows you to spoof the API. In short, you can tell Facebook that you are posting from a typerwriter, Hogwarts, cheese, or even a sperm whale, regardless of whether or not you actually are. Kudos if you actually hacked your sperm whale to post to Facebook.

It probably won’t be long until this fun little trick gets popular enough to be noticed and subsequently blocked, but until then, post witty, pop culture statuses that will amaze your friends and strike fear in the hearts of your enemies. Nyan Cat se volvió un meme de inmediato y desde que Lulzsec lo comenzó a utilizar para sus osadas travesuras de hackeo se popularizó aún más. Pues si eres un fanático de los memes y, además, amas a Nyan Cat, te comentó que desde ya lo puede ver volar desde tu barra e progreso en Windows 7.

Como respuesta a un comentario en Reddit, Ben creo una aplicación que modifica la barra de progreso en Windows 7 por Nyan Cat. La verdad es que no soy muy fanático de este gato, pero debo admitir que es una interesante manera de llevarlo a tu ordenador si quieres algo distinto.

Para comenzar a ver Nyan Cat volando cada vez que transfieras algún archivo (ojo, por mucho que parezca, esto no aumentará la velocidad de transferencia) sólo tienes que descargar el archivo desde la web oficial, descomprimirlo y ejecutar el archivo .exe.

¿No te has preguntado alguna vez cuántas visitas llegan diariamente a tu sitio web favorito? Yo sí lo he hecho y también me lo he preguntado bastante de lugares que no me gustan, como por ejemplo Alt1040, que igualmente recibe una cantidad de visitas diarios enorme.

Debo decir que muchas veces me he preguntado cuántas visitas reciben este tipo de lugares y otros que me gustan o disgustan, simplemente porque como dueña de sitios me gustaría saber cuánto me falta para lograr tener una cantidad cercana de o igual a este tráfico para poder rentabilizar realmente mis blogs.

Repetidamente he buscado un servicio web que te permita conocer realmente un promedio de las visitas que recibe distintos lugares y no un ranking como lo hace Alexa, para dar un ejemplo. Ahora Wwwhatsnew hablan de un sitio llamado MuStat donde hacen precisamente esto.

MuStat requiere que simplemente pongas el enlace de la web donde quieres averiguar algo, esperar unos segundos y empezar a leer los resultados. Te dicen qué promedio de visitas recibe diariamente, el pagerank, el tiempo de creación, qué tal es con el SEO y qué tan bien les van con la publicidad.

Cuando usas este servicio te das cuenta que blogs grandes, como lo es Techtástico, que recibe bastantes visitas, aún no es tan rentable como creeríamos que sería en cuanto a publicidad. Y también te das cuenta de que te falta mucho por alcanzar con tus propios blogs porque para que el SEO, pagerank y demás aumente realmente necesitas una cantidad de visitas tan enorme que casi debes ser como Lifehacker para lograrlo. Eso sí, debo decir que algunas veces los resultados que entrega no son iguales a la realidad, así que calculen que los lugares tienen más visitas de lo que se muestran en los resultados.

Para hacer uso del servicio basta con acceder a su web oficial y subir los archivos al mismo tiempo, pasarán unos minutos y ya vamos a tener el vídeo en nuestra cuenta. Si nos preocupa que puedan acceder a nuestra contraseña o modificar algo en nuestra cuenta de Youtube, podemos estar tranquilos porque se basan en AuthSub API, un protocola que sólo les permite subir el archivo sin otro tipo de acceso.

La ventaja de esto sería la calidad del archivo, la verdad es que sí lo mejoran y, por supuesto, nos ahorramos el tener que unirlo y posteriormente subirlos.

Maneja tu colección de películas con My Movie Library

My Movie Library es una aplicación que juega un papel importante a la hora de gestionar una base de datos de películas, con la posibilidad de añadir títulos a las películas y a las colecciones de películas para evitar duplicaciones y mejorar la información general recogida.

My Movie Library es una aplicación totalmente gratuita para Windows que rastrea las carpetas seleccionadas en el equipo qun busca de películas a partir de algoritmos con los que detecta el título de la película, mira los títulos en IMDB y así detecta el título de la película y llena los campos de la base de datos correspondientes.

El programa muestra varias opciones desde el inicio. El botón “Añadir carpeta” se puede utilizar para iniciar el proceso antes mencionado. Sólo tienes que seleccionar una carpeta y My Movie Library va a hacer todo el trabajo de encontrar, identificar y añadir películas a tu base de datos de películas.

La otra opción para agregar películas al programa es usar el botón “Agregar”. Esta es una opción semi-manual en el que tendrás que introducir el título de la película que el programa luego trata de encontrar e identificar en la página web IMDB.

El botón “Obtener información”, a diferencia de los demás, recupera información acerca de las películas de IMDB. Toda la información, que incluye el reparto, la guía, la clasificación, información, año de estreno, se puede mostrar directamente desde la interfaz de búsqueda. Esto significa que es relativamente fácil identificar las películas cuando no esta claro qué película es la correcta.

Una opción interesante es la posibilidad de elegir una ruta de archivo para seleccionar una película. Esto enlaza la información de la película a una copia en el disco duro. Esta función activa la opción de reproducción de la película en la solicitud.

Puede mostrar una lista de todas las películas de, por ejemplo, Kevin Costner almacenadas en los discos duros del ordenador en cuestión de segundos

Puedes descargar la última versión del programa desde el sitio web del desarrollador. Es compatible con Windows XP, Vista y Windows 7.

Seguramente alguna vez les ha pasado que quieren ver el trailer de alguna película nueva, o que su artista favorito acaba de lanzar un vídeo nuevo, pero al llegar a Youtube no puedes verlo porque estás fuera del área donde está permitido. Nada más de pensarlo me da rabia porque es totalmente ridículo. Con estas normas hacen del Internet un lugar con limitaciones y no debería serlo.

Como sea, cuando vas a Youtube y no puedes ver un vídeo porque estás fuera del territorio en dónde sí está permitido, verás algo como la captura de abajo.

Hay muchas formas de evitar esto, pero creo que una de las maneras más fáciles es instalando la extensión para Google Chrome llamada ProxyTube, simplemente porque no vamos a tener que preocuparnos por instalar programas adicionales en nuestro sistema operativo, ni probar mil proxys a ver cuál nos sirve para ver el vídeo, para luego quedar agotados y decidir simplemente ver otra cosa o buscarlo en otro lugar.

Instala la extensión como cualquier otra y te aparecerá un botón a la derecha de la barra de direcciones de tu navegador, que al hacerle click podrás marcarle que se active el proxy durante una búsqueda. Marca y presiona “Save“.

Luego de activar esto no solo podrás conseguir los vídeos que quieras en la búsqueda que hagas dentro de Youtube (que también son bloqueados ahí), sino que cualquier vídeo que no podías ver antes, ahora funcionará perfectamente.

ProxyTube es una rápida solución y aunque pone publicidad en la parte de arriba de un vídeo que no se puede ver, no está nada mal. Y si quieren saber otros trucos de Youtube lean esta entrada y también los comentarios donde hay otra solución para el problema de vídeos bloqueados.

Everyone’s favorite video game regarding rolling up everything that exists onto a sticky ball, Katamari Damacy, can now be played on any webpage with a simple piece of Javascript that can run within Google Chrome. As in the regular games, the Katamari starts off small, and as the player rolls over objects, the Katamari picks up said objects, helping the Katamari to grow in size, which in turn, allows the Katamari to roll up bigger objects. In certain levels in the games, players start smaller than a mouse, but eventually grow in size until they are literally rolling up landmasses and rainbows. With this hack, players can pretty much do the same thing to webpages, rolling up text and images, though they’ll have to find a rainbow fan site if they want to roll up some of those.

Head to Kathack.com, copy and paste the code into Chrome’s address bar, press enter, and off you roll. The initial hack required the use of holding right-click to move the Katamari, but this didn’t work out quite so well on MacBook trackpads, so Hacker News user aes provided some code to change the controls around to the left-click. Head to aes’ post, then simply copy and paste the code into Chrome’s address bar, press enter, and destroy a webpage. The hack also features the Katamari Damacy theme song, so you’ll have that stuck in your head for a while.

Chart Chooser es un servicio gratuito que nos ofrece 17 nuevos tipos de plantillas con gráficos para PowerPoint y Excel. Con este pack de plantillas podremos enriquecer mucho más la información que escribimos en Excel o en Power Point, los dos pilares de Microsoft Office.

En esta página podemos encontrar desde gráficos circulares y lineales hasta los ahora tan populares, gráficos de burbujas, que representan de una manera muy interactiva cifras sobre población, dinero, etc.

Cuando llegamos a esa página nos encontramos con una serie de plantillas (1 en total), si alguna nos gusta, sólo tenemos que dar un simple clic sobre ella y seremos redirigidos a una nueva página, en la que podremos ver la gráfica más grande y encontraremos dos botones, uno verde y otro naranja, que sirven para descargar la plantilla para Excel o para PowerPoint.

Una vez hayamos descargado la plantilla, simplemente tendremos que inplementarla en el sistema de Excel o PowerPoint y ya podremos editarla a nuestro gusto cambiándole el título y los valores predeterminados.

Necesitas cartón para darle ese aspecto parecido de color marrón y fuerte, preferiblemente del que se usan con las cajas, papel blanco para los dientes, papel negro para los ojos, plastico o papel muy delgado para la boca, que sea de color rojo y es importante que sea traslucido porque por ahí pasará la luz, un LED de 10mm, cable común, silicón caliente, una pila de botón, como esas de los relojes, de 3 volios va bien, tijeras y lápiz. Si quieres algo más sofisticado puedes comprar un interruptor y un sostenedor para la bateria.

¿Cómo lo hago?

Comienza cortando el Domo Kun en el cartón. No importa el tamaño, pero puedes hacerlo de 6 centímetros de ancho y 8 de largo. Si necesitas un molde, en este enlace tienes una imagen que puedes imprimir de un paperkraft para guiarte. De hecho, puedes hacerlo con esto si quieres, queda de tu parte decidir. Corta, sé preciso y corta ligeramente en los lugares donde vas a doblar porque si no se verá terrible. Fíjate en la imagen que sigue. No olvides que debes dejar un agujero donde va la boca.

Corta luego los dientes, la boca roja y los ojos. Pega con cinta adhesiva por la parte de atrás antes de cerrar la lámpara. Si vas a poner un interruptor deja un hueco atrás para pegar también. Cierra todo y deja un lado abierto para instalar las partes electricas.

Ahora vamos con la parte electrica. Primero toma el LED que debe ser blanco y pon un poco de cable en cada extremo. Si no estás usando interruptor ni base para la pila, solo debes pegar los cables a positivo y negativo de ella. Si estás usando el interruptor, entonces debe quedar algo como lo que ves en la imagen de abajo. Prueba a ver si funciona.

Por último, mete todo funcionando en la cajita de Domo Kun, pon el interruptor en lugar y listo. Puedes ver en las imágenes de abajo para que notes cómo quedo por detrás. Si no estás usando interruptor, pues te toca pegar los cables a la pila cada vez que quieras que prenda.

Este es un proyecto simple, geek y muy lindo, pero no esperen muchísima luz de su parte.

Creating your own library of reusable code snippets (on snipplr.com for example) is a great way to speed up development. Check out these 15 snippets which you may find useful for integrating into your own code library.

Some of the following snippets are presented here as functions which can simply be used as-is. While you should be able to drop these into your own code as needed, I highly recommend you take the time to really look at the code to get a deeper understanding of what is happening. Looking at code snippets is a great way to learn new techniques and improve your programming skills overall.

1. Randomize an Array

To randomize an array we loop over the length of the array, removing an object chosen at random and then adding it back onto the Array’s end position. Think of this as having a deck of cards where you pick a card at random from the deck and move it to the top of the stack repeated for the total number of cards in the deck.

It’s important to note that the splice method returns an Array containing the removed object and not the object itself hence adding the [0] after the splice call to reference the contained object.

2. Position Display Objects in a Grid Layout

This is a short way of positioning display objects in a grid layout. It makes use of the modulo operator (%) to position each display object along the x axis and the floor method of the Math class for the y position.

This example creates 20 instances of a custom display object called MyDisplayObject positioning each instance in a grid 5 columns wide. As you may have guessed, the two 5′s in the snippet represent the number of columns in the grid.

3. Remove All Children From a DisplayObjectContainer

DisplayObjectContainer, a parent class of the more common container classes such as MovieClip and Sprite, does not have a built in method to immediately remove all children. To remove all children we simply use a while loop to remove the child which occupies index 0 in the stack until no children remain.

4. Get URL of the Page Where SWF is Embedded

To get the complete URL as it appears in your web browser’s address bar we use AS3′s ExternalInterface class. Without going into too much detail, know that in this example we use ExternalInterface to access the DOM (Document Object Model) of the HTML page which contains our Flash.

A downside of ExternalInterface is that the SWF must be embedded in the HTML page with the “allowscriptaccess” parameter set to either “sameDomain” or “always”. This is OK when you control the embedding of a SWF but unfortunately cannot be relied upon if the SWF may be run on third party websites. Don’t forget to add import flash.external.ExternalInterface at the top of your document.

Alternatively, to access the URL where the SWF resides we can access the url property of the LoaderInfo object belonging to our SWF’s root. Note this is the location of the SWF file and NOT the HTML page it’s embedded in. It’s important to make this distinction as both the SWF and HTML could reside on different domains.

Knowing where a SWF file is running is useful for showing domain specific content. In the context of a Flash game this might be having ‘bonus’ levels only available when the SWF is running on the developer’s site or whether ads are displayed or not.

5. Round the Positional Values of a DisplayObjectContainer and its Children

This is a recursive function which takes a DisplayObjectContainer (such as a Sprite or MovieClip) and rounds the x and y values of it and its children. It’s recursive as the function calls itself when it encounters a child which is also a DisplayObjectContainer so its children also get rounded. This recurses the entire display list beneath the passed DisplayObjectContainer, its children, its children’s children etc.

The point of this function is to make sure the passed DisplayObjectContainer and all its children sit on whole pixels. This can be important when dealing with graphics which aren’t sitting on whole pixels as it will cause them to appear blurry. This is probably most noticeable when dealing with pixel fonts.

You’ll notice the first if statement checks to see if the passed DisplayObjectContainer is NOT the stage. This is needed as Stage inherits from DisplayObjectContainer but does not implement the x and y properties (along with several other properties). This allows you to safely pass the stage as a parameter of this function which will in-turn round the position of all objects on the display list.

6. Random Number Between Two Values

Generating a random number is often useful when developing applications in AS3 (more so when developing games). AS3 has a built in random number method as a part of its Math class which generates a number less than 1 and greater than or equal to 0. We can use this to create a useful function for generating a random number between two other numbers.

7. Random Boolean

Similarly to needing a random number, you may also require a random Boolean for use in an expression. Again we use the random method of the Math class to simply return true if random() generates a number greater than or equal to 0.5 or false if less.

8. Find the Angle Between Two Points

This is another common snippet used by game developers for finding the angle between two points on a plane. This function has four parameters; the first pair being the x and y values of your first point and the second pair being the x and y values of your second point.

It’s important to note this function returns the angle in radians NOT degrees.

9. Converting Between Radians and Degrees

When dealing with equations involving angles you will often be dealing in radians and not degrees. Display objects in Flash use degrees when dealing with their rotation property so we need a way to convert between the two. These helper function are useful for accomplishing just that; one for converting radians to degrees and the other degrees to radians.

10. Email Validation

When accepting input from a user through a form it is often necessary to validate data before allowing it to be sent to a back-end script. This is most true for email addresses as they are often the only point of contact between yourself and the user and are important to get right. The below function makes use of a regular expression to confirm the email is of a valid format.

11. Space Removal

In the same way you often need to format data being sent from Flash, you sometimes need to format data being received. This function takes a string and removes all spaces from it. Here we use the split method of the String class to split the string into an Array and then call the join method of the Array class to convert it back to a string. This is useful when dealing with a string you know cannot contain spaces such as an email address, URL or phone number. This returns a new string, leaving the input string unchanged.

If you are wondering why we do not use a regular expression here, it is simply because this method executes faster.

12. Slugify

Wikipedia describes a slug as

part of a URL which identifies a page using human-readable keywords

A slug is usually a few words with each word separated by a delimiting character, usually an underscore or hyphen. A slugified version of the string “10 Tips to a Better Life!” would be “10-tips-to-a-better-life”.

This function takes an arbitrary string and converts in for use as a slug. We use two regular expressions to accomplish this, the first is used to remove any character which is not a word character, space or hyphen, the second replaces any spaces with a single hyphen. Finally we convert the string to lowercase. This returns a new string, leaving the input string unchanged.

If you’re wondering where this might be used in the context of Flash it is particularly useful with SWFAddress for creating SEO friendly URLs for the discreet sections of your app.

13. Strip `http://` or `https://` From a String, Optionally Removing `www.`

This function takes a string and returns a copy with all occurrences of http:// and https:// removed. The string, “Please visit http://example.com to find out more” would convert to “Please visit example.com to find out more”. Generally this is more compact as the http:// is redundant when you are obviously referring to a URL.

Optionally, this function can also strip the www subdomain by passing true as the second parameter. It’s set to false by default as example.com and www.example.com could theoretically contain different websites.

14. Strip HTML Markup

If there is ever a time when you load text from an external source containing unwanted HTML markup use the following function. This uses a regular expression to strip all HTML tags from the input string. The string “<strong>Click <a href=’http://example.com’>here</a> to find out more</strong>” would simply be converted to “Click here to find out more.”. This returns a new string, leaving the input string unchanged.

15. Strip XML Namespaces

Loading XML, specifically from 3rd party sources can sometimes prove problematic when the XML makes use of namespaces. This snippet will take an XML object and strip all namespace declarations and prefixes. This snippet leaves the input XML unchanged and returns a new XML object.

It is worth mentioning that namespaces exist for a reason and removing them may cause problems. This is usually only an issue when combining multiple XML files together from different sources. I personally have never experienced this but is still worth being wary of.
