Today’s scripture includes Jesus’ teaching on worry and money. Is there any wonder why Jesus links those two things as we read the headlines of the day? Jesus teaches us not to worry about money. But he goes much farther than that. Jesus calls us to seek him and his kingdom first, and to depend on him in all areas of life. Following Jesus often means living in opposite ways than the ways of the world around us.

One way to look at this is to remember that the call of God to follow Jesus comes to each person, one by one. Every one of us who follows Jesus does this as an individual. The Bible tells us that Christ comes to take up residence in a person’s heart. How much more individual can that be! Yet, we were created for connection not only with God but with other people. This is most certainly true for Jesus’ people. On Sunday, September 8, we’ll be reminded that we need each other!

ZPC is taking all of the calendar year 2008 to study the Kingdom of God. So today we learn that the Kingdom of God is like a mustard seed or yeast. What does that mean? Can these amazing Bible stories relate to us today and every day this week? Well, yes, they can. Jesus’ ushering in the Kingdom of God was not what his followers thought it should be – it was much smaller and quieter. But with time, it would grow into something truly amazing and world-changing. We should be encouraged by this news. <itunes:summary>ZPC is taking all of the calendar year 2008 to study the Kingdom of God. Spiritual “zeroes” are able to have all of God that God can possibly give, because they have nothing to count on except Jesus and his mercy.
