ZipList Zest is a weekly feature that dives into the lives of our partners to reveal the scoop on who they are, their passion for cooking, and a recipe that shows their zest in the kitchen.

Stacey Little is a true Southerner, who comes from a long line of Southerners with a gift for cooking. Sharing family recipes is Stacey’s way of helping to preserve his family’s food for generations to come. His recipes are easy, quick, delicious, and perfect to enjoy at the supper table while reconnecting with family and friends. We hope y’all will enjoy learning more about Southern Bite, where you will find true Southern food and Southern hospitality!

Favorite “Southern” ingredient?
My initial reaction was bacon – or bacon grease. But then I realized that I’ve answered two questions with bacon. I’m not sure if that says more about my cooking or more about my waistline – or both. But, being that bacon isn’t exactly a “Southern” ingredient, I guess I’d say okra. Down here in the South, we eat okra by itself in just about any way – fried, boiled, steamed, pickled. But we also like to use okra as a thickener in things like gumbo.

With whom would you like to have dinner (living, dead, or animated)?
Of all the famous and influential people living or dead, I think I’d just like to sit down with my great-grandmother at her Formica topped dinette set one last time. I’d love for her to meet my little boy and to be able to share with her how her food keeps me connected to her no matter how long she’s been gone.

Are any of your recipes family favorites, passed down from previous generations?
A great deal of the recipes that are currently on Southern Bite are family recipes. I have shared many of my mother’s, grandmother’s, and great-grandmother’s recipes. Sharing those recipes is a great way to preserve my family’s food for future generations. Sharing those type of recipes is why Southern Bite got started.

What cooking skill do you lack?
I can’t cook bacon to save my life. I’m honest about it though. My wife cooks the bacon in our house. If the future of the entire world depended on me cooking a pan of bacon properly, y’all better start saying your prayers. I burn it every time. I’m beginning to think I have some kind of mental block about it. It’s making me nervous talking about it.

Favorite dessert?
My all-time favorite dessert is my Mom’s Oreo Delight . As a kid, special occasions were always met with a batch of this stuff and nothing takes me back like this dish. To start, I’m a HUGE Oreo fan, so add some chocolate pudding, cream cheese, and some whipped topping and that’ll just about put me in a coma! That reminds me, I need to buy Oreos…

Southern Bite can also be found on Facebook and Twitter.

ZipList Zest is a weekly feature that dives into the lives of our partners to reveal the scoop on who they are, their passion for cooking, and a recipe that shows their zest in the kitchen.

Does Kristy Still, creator of Mommy Hates Cooking, REALLY hate to cook? After working with Kristy for several months, I still didn’t know and was on a mission to find out!

With whom would you like to have dinner (living, dead, or animated)?
I would love to cook for my grandma. She was the queen of the cooking hatred in my opinion. She really burnt more things than she actually cooked; however, she was one of the most amazing virtuous women I have ever known. She passed away when I was in junior high, it was extremely hard but I treasure every moment that I had with her. I would love to cook for her and show her how far I have come, I know she would be very proud.

If you could travel anywhere in the world for a meal, where would you go?
Most likely Italy, I have a deep love for Italian food and garlic.

Do you really hate to cook?
I did hate to cook when I started this site, really hated it. I would of rather cleaned every inch of my house over spending a minute cooking. I believe there were a few reasons to why I hated cooking: 1) my mom did not care for it so we really did not cook much, 2) I had no time to cook, and 3) I really knew very little about it. Once I realized that I needed to eat better and was tired of feeding my family the same meals, I set out to turn my hatred into a passion for cooking. I started by just making a dish using a recipe found on various websites when my blog first started, then I started really getting into creating new recipes. This desire grew and has since become more of a passion for me. I really enjoy challenging myself in the kitchen and sharing the experiences along with the recipes with my reader’s. Over the past few years I have cooked a new recipe nearly every day rarely repeating recipes. I try to be sure my recipes are extremely simple as well as tasty. My goal is that the best of cooks or the worst of cooks can make the dish and love it. My main goal has been met for me personally because by creating this site it has allowed me to find a new found love and appreciation for cooking.

How do you take your coffee?
I love iced coffee. I am also usually asked when making my coffee ‘would you like any coffee with that cream?’ I tend to overload my coffee with flavored creamers.

What are you working on that’s new this year?
I am in the works on a new site catering to recipes free of the top 8 food allergens, FoodAllergyEats.com.

Mommy Hates Cooking can also be found on Facebook and Twitter.

Gina Homolka has the ability to create healthy, flavorful, family-friendly recipes that are easy to make. A native of Long Island, NY, Gina started Skinnytaste in 2008 and enjoys transforming traditional, full-fat recipes into healthy dishes using low-fat ingredients. Her recipes are always appetizing and zestful, making her someone I wanted to learn more about.

What inspired you to write a food blog?
Back when I started it, there weren’t as many as you see now. I used to look at Tastespotting and I just loved all the blogs, the photography, the food, etc. I always loved to cook, but didn’t take good photos so it was a challenge for me to see if I could do it. I never knew how much fun I would have with it or that it would one day be a career!

What passions do you have besides cooking?
I have a passion for art and photography. My previous career prior to Skinnytaste I was a digital photo retoucher and graphic designer so art is always on my mind.

What is your favorite beverage?
Coffee!

If you could travel anywhere in the world for a meal, where would you go?
I would love to go to Italy. That is absolutely on my to-do list!

What are your favorite meals to cook?
It’s a toss between pasta dishes and stews. I guess I like comfort food!

What do you do to de-stress?
Yoga is a great way to de-stress… or shopping!

Skinnytaste can also be found on Facebook and Twitter and we encourage you to check out Gina’s Amazon Store For Must Have Items.

Take a look.

1) How do I add in an image using the ZipList Recipe Plugin?

From the “Add New Post” page in WordPress, click the Upload/Insert Image icon. From here, select the photo you wish to use in the plugin. Once you do that you’ll see the Link URL at the very bottom of that pop up window. Go ahead and copy that URL and close the window. Then, go into the plugin and paste that URL into the field that reads “Recipe Image.”

2) I selected “Bulleted” for my Ingredients, but I don’t see any bullets. How do I add in bullets?

You do not see actual bullets because we want to make it easy for you to add in custom bullets if you choose to do so. To insert basic bullets, go to “Appearance,” then “Editor,” then “Stylesheet” from your WordPress dashboard, and paste in this styling code at the bottom of the stylesheet.

#zlrecipe-container #zlrecipe-innerdiv #zlrecipe-ingredients-list li { list-style-type: disc; }

3) What is a Partner Key? Why do I need one and what is the benefit to having a Partner Key?

A partner key is a way for us to identify recipes that come from your website in our recipe search index. It also enables us to associate your site’s logo with your recipes and identifies your website as the publisher (otherwise, the publisher appears as “unknown”). See example here: Quick Chicken Corn Chowder.

You must request your partner key, and once you receive the partner key, you’ll click on “ZipList Recipe Plugin” at the bottom left-hand side of your WordPress dashboard. Click through and Partner Key will be the first entry field.

4) I like to share notes or substitutions with my readers. Can I do that with the ZipList Recipe Plugin?

Yes. From within the ZipList Recipe Plugin settings, scroll down to the very bottom where it reads ‘Notes’ Label. This label will appear immediately under the Ingredients section. You can change the label from “Notes” to “Substitutions” or whatever you need to share extra details with your readers.

When you create your blog post as you normally would using the plugin, you’ll see a Notes section after you click “More Options” for you to fill in extra details for your users. Here’s an example of a blog post with a notes section: No Crust Spinach Quiche.

5) I want my recipe image to show up in my readers’ recipe boxes and in ZipList’s recipe search index, but I don’t want it to show up on the plugin-produced recipe card on my blog. What should I do?

Go to ZipList Recipe Plugin settings, and check the box in the General section that reads “Don’t show image in post.” Then, add in the URL of your recipe image in the Recipe Image field each time you create a new recipe post. The image will show up in recipe boxes, but not on your blog post.

If you have not already downloaded the plugin for your WordPress.org blog, then download the free plugin. Click here to find additional instructions and styling codes to walk you through installation and publishing your first recipe using the ZipList Recipe Plugin for WordPress.org.
