We like to make the weekly grocery shopping as simple as possible, so we put together a short overview with three ways to speedily create and update shopping lists on our website, ZipList.com. Take a look.

1) Use Semicolons to Add Multiple Items to Your List

It’s simple to add multiple items to your list at one time. Just use a semicolon to separate your list of items. For more shortcuts, check out our blog post, Five Easy ZipList Shopping List Tips and Shortcuts.

2) Quickly Add Items You Purchase Most Often (List History)

We make it easy for you to add the items you buy most often to your list by generating a special section for you called List History. Just click the List History text link in the bottom left margin on your primary shopping list screen, and you’ll see list of the items you add to your list most frequently.

From this screen, check the items you want to add to your list this week, and then click the “Add to List” button.

A minibox will then pop up to verify that these are the items you want to add to your shopping list. Just click the blue Add Items button and these items will be added to your weekly shopping list.

You can also check items that you would like to use to make a checklist, and click the “Create Checklist” button. If you buy the same items frequently then creating a checklist is the perfect way to save even more time.

Click the Back to My Lists text link under List History to go back to your weekly shopping list. You’ll then notice that all of the items you added from List History are now on your shopping list.

3) Add Items You Buy Less Frequently with Ease (Checklists)

Whether you need to stock (or re-stock) items in your spice rack or want to create a list of all the after-school snacks your kids prefer, you can use Checklists to add multiple items to your shopping list at once. Just click the Checklists tab to get started.

Next, simply search or browse for checklists you may need to use in the future, like for basic grocery items or common spice rack needs. If you find a checklists you like then “Add it to My Checklists.”

When you’re ready to go grocery shopping, simply pull up your checklist, check the items you need for the week and click the blue Add Items button.

You can even create your own checklists by clicking the Create a Checklist link on the My Checklists or Checklist Search pages. Name your Checklist (Weekly Wegman’s List), add an image, fill in the first Group heading and finally add your items.

ZipList Zest is a weekly feature that dives into the lives of our partners to reveal the scoop on who they are, their passion for cooking, and a recipe that shows their zest in the kitchen.

Meet Amy Green, author of Simply Sugar & Gluten-Free, who has created a healthy and delicious collection of recipes for those aimed at eating well, eliminating refined sugars and gluten, and maintaining a healthy weight. She has successfully maintained a 60+ pound weight-loss for nearly six years by eliminating sugar & gluten (wheat) from her diet and by learning to listen to her body. We wanted to find out how she keeps her recipes full of flavor while also using ingredients that are easy and budget-friendly.

What is your favorite kitchen tool?
I couldn’t live without my KitchenAid stand mixers – I have two. How would I make gluten-free bread, perfectly churned ice cream, and light, airy cupcakes without them? I’d be lost without my Cuisinart food processor. Come to think of it, I’d be lost without my chef’s knife and my microplanes, too. I have a secret love affair with my CrockPots, which let me cook from scratch and save so much time on busy nights. Then there’s my steamer, which cooks veggies perfectly without leaching out too many nutrients. Le Creuset dutch ovens are a pure necessity for braising and stews. Parchment paper, silpats, decorating tips, cake stands, bread pans, muffin tins, springform pans…I couldn’t let go them. My husband put up extra storage cabinets in our garage so I’d have room for all my kitchen tools. I’m one of those girls who would rather add another piece of Le Creuset to my collection than get a new Louis Vitton purse.

Do you have a cooking disaster story you’d like to share?
My entire venture into gluten-free baking was a disaster. I had one flop after another. I remember standing in my kitchen crying because I couldn’t make a good chocolate cake. It took me a while to make it through that learning curve but once I did, it became second nature. When I get questions now about why someone’s recipe flopped I have to think through the process because it’s become intuitive to me.

With whom would you like to have dinner (living, dead, or animated)?
I’d love to have dinner with Ina Garten, The Barefoot Contessa. Actually, I’d like to spend a week or two just watching her cook and asking her questions about recipe development. Though our cooking styles are quite different, I’ve learned more from her about flavor and making good food really simple than anyone else. Her cooking style has a simple elegance that is timeless and her recipes are always delicious. Some of our favorite meals come from her books.

Where do you do your grocery shopping?
Grocery shopping is a marathon event. I’ve developed a system to streamline the shopping but I often have to go to 4 different stores to get everything we need. Whole Foods and Central Market carry great organic produce and have the best cheese selections. I get most of my gluten-free flours on-line or at Whole Foods as they have the best selection. I also shop at Sprouts, which is close to home and also carries a lot of unique products I use in my recipes. Costco is wonderful for bulk items, like nuts, fresh and frozen organic fruits and vegetables, and I also get a lot of household supplies there. My frugal nature keeps me going back to Wal-Mart. Sometimes Wal-Mart has shelf items that are $2 to $4 cheaper than anywhere else.

Where do you find inspiration and ideas for cooking sugar and gluten-free recipes?
My entire motivation for baking gluten-free and refined sugar-free is to create recipes I otherwise couldn’t have. I’ve been eating this way for 8 years and there are so many things I’ve never tasted. I figure out how to make a version I can eat. I also used to be really overweight – over 180 pounds. So, part of my approach is to make the dishes healthier in some way. I don’t sacrifice flavor and texture, though. Instead, I want to be able to serve my food to anyone without them noticing that the dish has been made-over.

What do you do to de-stress?
I love yoga and walking my dogs. They keep me healthy and also help me let go of tension I tend to carry with me. I’m a Type A personality, so I need a way to relax and let go of all the stress I create. Baking also provides an outlet for me to de-stress when I’m not on a tight deadline or have to follow rigid guidelines that squelch my creativity. My husband and I laugh a lot, too. There’s a lot of love and peace in our home, which makes it so easy to be here. I can share all my concerns and worries with him and by the time we’re done talking we’re both cracking up about them. Being able to laugh at ourselves and some of the stressful situations life sends our way makes them seem less daunting.

As you may have noticed, we’ve been really into Pinterest lately. It’s the perfect place to share recipes, and boy do we have recipes! But now we’re going to mix it up, and are excited to kick off our first-ever contest on Pinterest, and it’s all about the glitz, glamour and food of the Oscars.

All you need to do is create a pin board on Pinterest featuring pins to represent your ideal Oscar bash for a chance to win a $250 Visa debit card. Pin boards may be submitted up until Wednesday, February 22 at 11:59 p.m. ET. Then the real fun begins since Pinterest users will vote on their favorites!

Here’s how it works:

Step 1: Follow ZipList on Pinterest – Follow ZipList at http://www.pinterest.com/zippyziplist.

Step 2: Create an Oscars-Themed Pin Board – Create an Oscars pin board on Pinterest and categorize it under Food & Drink.

Step 3: Add Your Favorite Oscar-Worthy Pins – Add exactly 20 pins with your favorite Oscar-worthy recipes, fashions and party décor. At least 8 of the pins must be recipes from the ZipList recipe search index or from ZipList partners. Here’s a sample board we created to check out for inspiration: Host the Perfect Oscar Party.

Step 4: Submit Your Board Link to Enter the Contest – Email a link to your pin board to partners@ziplist.com by February 22 at 11:59 p.m. The top five pin boards will then be posted on the ZipList Blog on February 23. Boards will be judged on creativity (50%) and use of ZipList recipes (50%).

Step 5: Vote, Vote, Vote – On February 23, we will email the five finalists, and will also post their Oscar-themed boards on the ZipList Blog. If you are a finalist, ask your friends to like and repin the pins on your board to earn points through 12 p.m. ET on Sunday, February 26. Each like earns one point and each repin earns two points. The winner will be announced no later than Monday, February 27.

If you have any questions or would like a Pinterest invite, please contact us at partners@ziplist.com. We can’t wait to see your Oscars-themed boards on Pinterest! See below for the official contest rules.

It’s amazing how much ZipList has grown in the last eight months, going from a handful of branded partners to more than 100 today (and growing!). Even more exciting, we’ve seen more than 5,600 downloads of our free ZipList Recipe Plugin since it was first introduced in June.

More and more people are growing accustomed to being able to save their favorite recipes to a central recipe box, but there are still people who are new to the concept of saving recipes online. With this in mind, it’s a good idea to let your readers know that they can save favorite recipes they find on your website so they can make your recipes anytime and always find a link back to your website.

Take a look at these three ways to let your readers know they can save your recipes:

1) Make Use of the Recipe Index
Stacey at Southern Bite let his readers know in the recipe index section that they can click the blue Save Recipe button on each recipe to save favorites from his site to their recipe boxes. This is a good way to reach readers who go straight to the recipe index when they reach your website.

2) Write a Blog Post About the Save Recipe Feature
Once you start using the ZipList Recipe Plugin or add the Save Recipe button to your recipe posts, it’s smart to write up a post to let your readers know about the new feature. Let them know that they can now save recipes from your website to their personal recipe boxes, as well as save recipe ingredients to their shopping lists. Here are a few sample posts from other food bloggers:

Macheesmo: http://www.macheesmo.com/2011/12/the-internet-kitchen-ziplist

My Baking Addiction: http://www.mybakingaddiction.com/new-features-on-mba

Our Best Bites: http://www.ourbestbites.com/2011/09/personalized-online-recipe-box-at-obb

You may have noticed that we’ve been really excited about Pinterest lately, adding a bunch of new pin boards full of recipes, like Heart-Shaped Favorites and Desserts in Jars. Pinterest is a great way to collect favorite recipes onto pin boards, like “Yummy” and “Recipes I Must Try.” However, we thought this would be a great time to share some Pinterest do’s and don’ts when it comes to pinning recipes.

1) Don’t Copy & Paste Full Recipes. This is a big no-no. When you pin or re-pin a recipe, the empty field below the box to designate the pin board is meant for you to add a few words of text, like the recipe name or why you like the particular pin.

You never want to paste the entire set of ingredients and instructions onto a pin. Not only does this violate the copyright of the recipe owner, but it gives users little reason to click through to the recipe to learn more about the recipe creator, including food bloggers and recipe websites, and their other recipes.

Pinterest is about sharing and discovery, so it’s a good idea to let pinners have the opportunity to click through the pin to uncover new content and websites. To sign a petition to set a character limit on Pinterest pins, click here. See example to the left of a no-no pin.

2) Do Pin the Blog Post, Not the Home Page. If you see a great recipe (or any other piece of content), click through to the permalink (e.g., http://www.recipegirl.com/2012/02/13/stuffed-zucchini-boats) and then pin the actual recipe.

If you pin from the home page (e.g., http://www.recipegirl.com), the next time someone clicks through your pin, they’ll get to the most recent recipe, not the recipe you intended to share.

3) Don’t Pin Without First Checking Out the Original Source. Many times I’ve found recipe images I’ve wanted to repin and once I clicked through the beautiful image I realized it either went to just a picture with no recipe or to a tumblr login page or to a home page (not a permalink). That’s frustrating, but I was glad I checked first. I don’t want to spam Pinterest with a recipe that wasn’t really a recipe.

4) Do Give Credit to the Original Pinner When You Repin. It’s a nice gesture and helps to build community to repin a pin you like rather than clicking through and using the original URL as a brand new pin. Either way, the content owner gets full credit on your pin board.

I think there are mixed feelings about repinning, but I like to do it to give credit to the pinner who originally found and shared the recipe. When you repin, you also have the opportunity to modify the pin text, which not everyone realizes. See example to the left.

5) Don’t Pin Recipes from Google Images or Flickr. If you see a recipe you like on one of these image sites, click through to the actual recipe and pin from there. This is a great way to give credit to the creator.

Consider not pinning if there is no recipe attached. A nice recipe image is great, but it’s useless if there’s no recipe to make it. The same goes for image URLs. Don’t pin an image URL, pin a post URL.

6) Do Cite the Original Source in the Pin Text if You Can. I would say that most people don’t do this right now, but it’s not a bad idea. Someone who consistently does this is Deborah at Taste and Tell (one of our food blogger partners). Notice that she not only shares the name of the recipe, but also the name of the source and even links over to their pin boards.

7) Don’t use Hashtags. Hashtags are great on Twitter, making it easy to follow certain topics or themes. However, hashtags (e.g., #recipes, #valentine) are not recognized on Pinterest. If you search for “#recipes” on Pinterest, it’s the same as searching for “recipes” with no hashtag. Personally I think it just clutters up the pins too when you add hashtags, so I say don’t do it.

It’s easy to use our free ZipList Recipe Box to store all of your recipes from across the web all in one place, even recipes you find on Pinterest. Plus, we always give love to the original recipe creator since users need to click through to the original recipe to make what they’ve saved. This is the right way to do it to protect the rights of content creators.

Every good food blogger knows the importance of an amazing photo to go along with the recipes they share with their readers, even going so far as to share the camera and settings they used to shoot the photos. Just last month, Recipe Lion even posted 10 Great Photography Tips to Make Food Look Irresistible on their blog. So clearly food photography is important.

Not only does a good recipe image make your users want to save your recipes to their recipe boxes, but it makes them want to click through to your recipe post again and again to make that recipe. It’s that simple: better food photos equals more return blog traffic for you.

How To Add Images To Your Recipe Posts

A couple of weeks ago, I reminded you how to add an image to your recipe posts using the ZipList Recipe Plugin (it’s one of our most frequently asked questions). As a quick re-cap, here’s what you do:

From the “Add New Post” page in WordPress, click the Upload/Insert Image icon. Then, select the photo you wish to use in the plugin. You’ll see the Link URL at the bottom of that pop-up window. Copy the URL and close the window. Go into the plugin and paste that URL into the field that reads “Recipe Image.”

When you add in a recipe image, here’s what your blog post may look like (the section produced by the ZipList Recipe Plugin):

It looks good, huh? So, I totally understand that some plugin users do not want to incorporate the image into the recipe card, like what Buns in My Oven has done above. However, it’s key to add an image or your recipe will look like the image below in a user’s recipe box:

Honestly, it’s hard to tell just how good that Sourdough Chocolate Cake is if I can’t see the finished recipe. This is what a user will see if they add the recipe to their recipe box and there is no image. Why should I click through to your blog when I can’t remember how good it looked?

Hide Images On Posts But Show In Recipe Boxes

So here’s what you do to hide the recipe image from your blog post, but enable the image to display in your readers’ recipe boxes.

On the left-hand side of your WordPress dashboard, scroll to the bottom and click ZlipList Recipe Plugin. Look for the “Image Display” section in the middle of the page and check the box next to “Don’t Show Image in Post.”

That’s all you have to do. Just add in a URL for a recipe image, then check the box so it won’t display on your blog post, but will display inside the recipe box. If you have questions, just send us a note at plugins@ziplist.com. We’re happy to do what we can to help you out.
