While consumer camcorders take AVCHD standard for video recording, professional broadcasting camera-recorders like Panasonic P2 HD series use MXF container format to record movies, commercials and other high-end film and TV productions. Files are saved onto the P2 card in MXF format. This allows direct data transfer to IT-based broadcasting and production system configured with Non-linear editors and network servers. However, the MXF files are not so well-suited when editing with Apple editing apps. Neither Final Cut Pro nor Final Cut Express allows native transferring of the *.mxf clips or directly editing them. If you have a P2 card that filled up with MXF footage, or shootings recorded with Panasonic AG-HVX200A series, AJ-HPX3100, AG-HPX250 or any other P2HD model, get Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 or Avid Media Composer for native editing. To edit Panasonic P2 footage with Final Cut Express, you have to convert P2 MXF to AIC MOV for Final Cut Express natively supported video, e.g. MOV video with Apple Intermediate Codec.
The following guide shows how to convert Panasonic P2 MXF to AIC so as to Transfer Panasonic P2 MXF to Final Cut Express 4 for post-production.
Preparation:
Get Pavtube HD Video Converter for Mac ($35), which is compatible with Mac OS X Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion. There is trial version for evaluation, and you’re encouraged to have a try with it before purchase. Install and launch Pavtube HD Video Converter.
Transcode/Convert Panasonic P2 recordings for Final Cut Express 4

Step 1. Click "Add" to browse to and load Panasonic .mxf recordings. You can import P2 clips directly from a P2 card, a copy of a P2 card on Mac HDD. P2 MXF file structure is composed of these folders: Audio, Clip, Icon, Media, Proxy, Video, and Voice. You need to navigate to the Video folder for .mxf clips. Multiple .mxf videos can be loaded at a time since the Pavtube HD Video converter supports batch conversion.
Step 2. Click on "Format" and choose "iMovie and Final Cut Express > Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) (*.mov)". The format is developed by Apple and is natively supported by FCE. AIC encoded .mov video can be instantly imported to FCE without long-time rendering.

Step 3. Click "Convert" to start transcoding Panasonic P2 MXF to FCE 4 friendly Apple Intermediate Codec. When conversion complete you click "Open" to find converted .mov videos.

Some helpful notes:
1. Apple Intermediate Codec requires more hard disk space (40GB per hour as opposed to 13.5GB per hour for Standard Definition DV), a more powerful machine (an Intel-based Mac), and a more recent OS (Mac OS X 10.5). Make sure there is enough free space before you transferring MXF to Apple Intermediate Codec.

ProRes 422 is a standard-definition and high-definition lossy video compression format developed by Apple Inc. for use in post production. It was introduced in 2007 with Final Cut Studio 2 and is comparable to Avid’s DNxHD codec which has the same purpose and uses similar bit rates. Both are DCT based intra-frame-only codecs, and are therefore simpler to decode than distribution oriented formats like H.264.
How to Import and Edit MTS to Final Cut Pro on Mac?

PS: While Final Cut does not edit AVCHD natively, it is still a simple procedure to utilize the AVCHD footage. In Final Cut you would open your log and transfer window and import the footage as ProRes 422 which, while it creates larger files, is a great codec to edit with and I do so with most everything.I suggest you purchsed Pavtube AVCHD Convert for Mac , because compressor is very slow and Final Cut handle AVCHD files when it finds them in their original file structure (either by connecting the camcorder or using a memory card reader), not isolated .mts files.You don’t need the biggest and best Mac Pro and just either Final Cut Studio 2 or 3 will do just fine. I would suggest having a minimum of 4 gigs of ram which is the most FCP can utilize anyway at this point.

I have Canon XF300 camcorder and shoot the videos recently,the Canon XF300 supports the highest HD quality with Full HD 1920×1080 resolution with Canon XF codec and I want to edit my canon xf300 MXF files on iMovie on Mac OS X Lion.
iMovie is an useful and powerful tool for Mac users. I can bring video into iMovie from a variety of sources and devices so as to organize, catalog and edit the video, then share my movies with friends and family on the web, Mac or portable devices easily. but iMovie do not support Canon mxf files. I need to convert Canon XF300 MXF files to MOV which supported by iMovie. My friend recommend me a good Mac MXF Video Converter - Pavtube Video Converter for Mac. I can use it to convert/transcode Canon XF300 MXF files to AIC for iMovie.
Guide on how to convert Canon XF300 MXF files to AIC for iMovie
Step 1: Free download Pavtube Video Converter for Mac Lion, install and run it.
Once run the program, you can click "Add" button to load Canon XF300 MXF files.
Step 2: Select Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) (*.mov) as output format for iMovie.
In order to convert/import Canon XF300 MXF files to AIC for iMovie, you just need select AIC (*.mov) as output format for iMovie. Please click on the dropdown menu of "Format", and then follow "QuickTime Movie Format" > "Apple InterMediate Codec (AIC) (*.mov)".

I have .mxf files from my new Canon XF100, when I take the MXF files to Final Cut Express to be edited, I failed. After searching google, I need a program to transfer the recorded files MXF files into something FCE can recognize .
The Canon XF100 supports the highest HD quality with Full HD 1920×1080 resolution with Canon XF codec, up to 50Mbps bit rate and 4:2:2 color sampling. If you would like to edit the recorded .mxf video on iMac with FCE, you need Transcode MXF files to AIC MOV which is the free and useful part of the Apple Mac iLife.

While looking for solutions to Import Canon XF100 MXF to FCE on iMac, I downloaded and tried several converters. Only Canon MXF Video Converter for Mac from Pavtube Studion works for me. I like the batch processing and joining of multiple mxf videos into one file. The editing feature to trim the recorded videos is great, as I can control the content for conversion.
To help those who may face the same problem like me, or want to rewrap MXF to AIC .mov on Mac for HD editing in Final Cut Express, I here list a few steps with the fast AIC video conversion.
Step 1: Capture/Import MXF files to Pavtube Video Converter for Mac.
Connect Canon XF100 camcorder to computer via USB cable, and launch the 2011 best MXF to FCE Converter for Mac from Application folder. With built-in wizard, you can easily to capture MXF video footage from camcorder to the program. click the "Add" button to load .mxf videos. To get 1080 videos, we need to click the "Settings" button and choose 1920*1080 as output video size, Apple InterMediate Codec (AIC) as output video codec.
Step 3: Merge Canon XF100 MXF files into one. (optional)
Tick the checkbox for "Merge into one file", and the Mac 2011 best Canon XF100 MXF Video Converter will join and combine the video clips into a single file as output.
Step 4: Edit and trim Canon XF100 MXF videos. (optional)
Select the file you want to trim and click the "Edit" button, you will face the Edit window with original video and output video preview. You can enter exact time point as the set in and set out for trimming.
Step 5: Transcode Canon XF100 MXF to AIC MOV for FCE on Mac.
