Finally “Inner Textures” is alive and kicking! The board is able to capture micro electrical variations and transforms them into MIDI, CV, gate, and trigger signals for analog or digital synthesizers.  Just attach the electrodes or crocodile clips to your woven or felted piece created using a percentage of conductive fibers and the fluctuations of the galvanic conductance will produce MIDI/cv notes.

On the 27th and 28th of February I’m in Zagreb hosted by Radiona makerspace to give a workshop on weaving to play with Inner Textures board.

I named the board “Inner Textures” like the installation I’m working on since 2024, comprising three woven pieces created with plant-based and conductive yarns on a jacquard loom. In “Inner Textures,” the sonic dimension generated by the interactive woven piece serves as a powerful medium to engage the viewer on a deeper, more visceral level. Sound has a unique ability to resonate with the inner, often unexplored, parts of human experience, evoking emotions and responses that are not easily accessed through visual stimuli alone.

After a theoretical lecture on the topic, I moved to hands-on activities, introducing the tools and techniques of weaving to prepare students for the independent design explorations they would later undertake with smart materials. I brought the laser-cut loom that we co-developed at Serpica Naro, the cultural association I’ve been engaged with in Milan since 2005. The simple tool for back-strap weaving was not delivered as a physical object but as a digital file, an open-design common to be shared, produced locally, and, if needed, customized. The first action was to engage students in manufacturing the loom using leftover plexiglass material in the Fablab O Shanghai – the first Fab Lab opened in mainland China and managed by italian colleague Saverio Silli.

Participants brought their own yarn or materials to be woven and were introduced to the first steps of weaving, starting with loading the warp and then proceeding with the weft. I also introduced them to the various metal fibers that could be inserted in the weft to activate interactions with the digital world. The interaction with the textile was activated through an electronic board that converted the variation of resistance in the fiber into a recorded sound output.

I deliberately focused the interaction on sound rather than lights or screens, which I believe are often overrated in interactive design. The sonic dimension generated by the interactive woven pieces serves as a powerful medium to engage the viewer on a deeper, more visceral level. Sound has a unique ability to resonate with the inner, often unexplored, parts of human experience, evoking emotions and responses that are not easily accessed through visual stimuli alone. Students were invited to work on two parallel tracks: applying their design concepts through craftsmanship, using the looms with various yarns, carded wool, and metal fibers in their weaving, while simultaneously identifying the type of sonic interaction to be played according to the conceptual framework of their woven piece.

This interdisciplinary work, mixing weaving and interactivity, is first and foremost an exercise in moving the hands differently. Unlike the typical engagement with digital tools, where interaction is reduced to pressing fingers on plastic surfaces and watching screens for visual feedback, weaving with conductive materials demands a full-bodied tactile dialogue. The rhythmic threading of warp and weft, the tension held in the body during back-strap weaving, the direct manipulation of metal fibers: these gestures carry knowledge that fingers on keyboards cannot access and the feedback loop is fundamentally reimagined. Instead of the expected visual response on a screen, sound emerges from the woven textile itself, creating an interaction that is heard and felt rather than seen. This sonic dimension transforms the relationship between maker, material, and output, engaging multiple senses simultaneously and dissolving the separation between input and output that characterizes conventional digital interfaces. It is precisely through this return to haptic and auditory intelligence, to the wisdom embedded in craft traditions, that unusual and innovative modes of interaction can emerge. When we allow our hands to remember older ways of making while our ears attune to new forms of response, we open pathways to imagining technology that is more intimate, more responsive to the nuances of human touch and presence. The loom becomes not just a tool for fabrication, but a thinking device that challenges the screen-dominated, visually-centered paradigm of interaction design and invites us to weave together the tactile, the sonic, and the digital in genuinely new configurations.

S4Fashion consortium organised the gathering with the support of the other three EU COSME projects funded under the same call on circular fashion, namely: Circular Innobooster, Fashion for Change, and Small but Perfect. From 2021 to 2023, these initiatives have been driving sustainable practices in fashion, involving 25 European organisations coming from 15 member states and covering all European regions.

The conference had various panels hosted by David Lapof from Istituto Europeo di Design. I had the pleasure to be in the one titled “The entrepreneurial journey of a sustainable Fashion SME” with Stefanie Barz from Loop Look project and Ilaria Maria Sposito from Junkle project.

I talked about the latest steps of the evolution from Clotho to Circular Clotho, and how, thanks to the funding provided by S4Fashion, we could successfully test the closed-loop strategy of the EMF shielding textile I’m working on since 2020.

One of the cool highlights of the day was the positively heated debate focused on policies, to critically examine the challenges in the fashion industry and propose innovative, policy solutions regarding climate transition: Cecilia Nilsson-Bottka (European Commission, DG GROW Legal & Policy Officer), Lisa Lang (EIT Climate KIC, Director Policy & EU Affairs) and Leida Rijnhout (World Fair Trade Organization, Chief Executive) made it very clear that without social justice in the Global South there’s no real transition.

The event was hosted at MAD, a creative hub in Brussels helping organisations and professionals navigate sustainable business models in the early stages of their activity.

Since the beginning of 2021 I joined Fashion Tech Accelerator team to contribute to the setting-up of the creative Labs area of Scale7, the first Fashion & Design business incubator founded by Qatar Development Bank (QDB) in partnership with M7 located in in Msheireb Downtown, Doha, Qatar.

As the act of creating in fashion and design requires cutting edge tools and quality collaborations, next to the incubation and acceleration programme, Scale 7 decided to offer maker-oriented Labs to companies and individuals in order to access digital fabrication and craft tools to practise multidisciplinary work in a hands-on environment. Scale7 was created to become a catalyst for reshaping the fashion and design industry in the country and the region.

Starting remotely in 2020, I curated on one side the coordination of the installation of the Labs composed by 4 areas: Digital Fabrication, Fashion, Photography and Jewellery; and on the other I crafted the learning programme with the aim of engaging local participants to introductory and intensive courses.

For two years, in collaboration with my colleague Leyla Tawfiq who moved to Doha to follow daily management activities we’ve been organising and holding training sessions directly, or inviting international professionals like Emilio Antinori (Design for Craft) and Valentina Barella (Oriunda Jewels) to focus on advanced 3d printing and jewellery making.

During my stay I also organised a Designer in Residency programme to support local creatives into developing innovative workflows to optimise their skills in bringing ideas into this world using digital fabrication technologies.

Nei 4 giorni di Simposio, non ci sono stati ospiti e lineup decisi dagli organizzatori ma le attività si sono disegnate in base alla partecipazione attiva. Il villaggio utopico è stato animato da personaggi con caratteristiche, compiti e abilità. Ciascun partecipante ha scelto il personaggio in base al contributo da offrire alla comunità.

Mi sono unita al gruppo ARTIGIAN3 condividendo l’utilizzo di qualche telaio LaserLoom di Serpica Naro e qualche gomitolo di lana. L’obiettivo era la realizzazione un “totem” da lasciare in dono al luogo magico che ospita il Simposio, il villaggio ExEni a Borca di Cadore.

“The retreat of industrial societies, the scarcity of resources, climate change, and the digitalisation of everyday life are aspects that have fueled the economy of sharing, swapping, and lending – principles of commoning. In addition to the economic motivation of sharing – as evident in the disruptive business models of Airbnb, Uber or Spotify – a change in values is emerging in creative societies, characterized by conviviality and community. This includes sharing in the sense of ecological sustainability and free cooperation, which is evident in collective offerings such as food sharing or the free encyclopedia Wikipedia.
In our conference, we aim to explore the relevance of commons and commoning within design as a discipline and field of research. It aims to shed light on the complexity of commons and commoning from a design perspective and to present future models and scenarios pointing towards a more sustainable, just and peaceful world. I met very cool people working on various projects based all over the world.

Some days later senior researcher Christine Schranz, lead organiser of the conference⁣⁣, proposed me to write an article based on the lecture because she was curating the book coming out for Valiz publishing house and focused on networked, participatory, and open procedures based on the commons and commoning⁣⁣.

I contributed with a piece having the same title as my keynote “Lo-tech is the New Hi-tech” exploring the trajectory from open-source to open design and their relationship with the commons. Finally the book is accessible in paper copy but also in a free version in PDF!

OBOT (Our Bodies Our Tech) is a project I started in 2020 with MaddalenaFragnito concerned with a transfeminist and queer perspective in the study of science and technology. OBOT addresses methods to lower the barrier to the production of scientific knowledge by making access to tools, protocols, and data more inclusive and by promoting collaborative inquiry. Starting from questions raised by different gazes, OBOT’s work unfolds between workshops, scientific and technological toolmaking, research, and texts.

The collective monograph Synthetic Becoming brings together research by artists, activists, and feminist technoscience practitioners concerned with sympoietic becoming with hormones and hormonally-active chemicals. The contributors examine effects of industrial, pharmaceutical, and more-than-human production and interplay of hormonally active molecules, asking: What does life re-assembled by hormones and hormone-mimicking chemicals look and feel like? Who are we becoming with them and how can we possibly be with them otherwise? Adopting a decolonial feminist, posthumanist, and new materialist approach, the book embraces queer ecological sensibilities and responds with a series of critical but hopeful provocations that embrace posthuman mutability and articulate our “synthetic becoming” in ways that facilitate caring relations and allow us to envision and enact hopeful futures with and despite these peculiar chemical agents.

The book you are holding in your hands tells different stories about entanglements with hormones and hormone-mimicking chemicals. It is a collection of essays, poetic interventions, and critical provocations brought to you by a group of artists, activists, and feminist techno-science scholars and practitioners united by a shared belief that we are not autonomous, self-contained, and self-governing individuals but porous and malleable, open to change and reconfiguration. A critical examination of the effects of industrial, pharmaceutical, and more-than-human production of hormonally active molecules shifts our attention to our non-innocent chemical relations and at times traumatic and harmful, even deadly, entanglements with them. Studying these effects necessitates our engagement with issues of consent, complicity, and violence attached to the consumerism and extractivism implicit in the production, use, and disposal of hormonally active substances. There is no way out: the ubiquity of anthropogenic chemicals — be them pharmaceutical hormones or industrially manufactured substances with endocrine disrupting properties — leaves us with no option but to live our lives with and against them. This book seeks to facilitate this process of learning to live well in a world that also includes these chemicals.

Like our bodies, books are entities that exist owing to multiple influences, processes, and agencies. Including acknowledgments in books is an important reminder that it is because of a multitude of actors (rather than just listed “authors”) that books come into existence. With over thirty people authoring this collective monograph, acknowledging and expressing gratitude to all those who have supported us as we kept working towards the completion of this book becomes a challenging task. Responding to this challenge, this acknowledgement breaks with the tradition of writing an exhaustive list of all our partners, lovers, parents, children, friends, colleagues, supervisors, teachers, students, academic departments, institutions, and funding bodies (as important and indispensable as their support is for us and our book) and instead acknowledges the contribution of a particular entity without which this book—quite literally— would not be possible: the paper it is printed on. You wouldn’t be able to hold our book in your hands if it wasn’t for this 100 percent post-consumer recycled paper. The decision to use paper made of waste collected from recycling programs stems from our commitment to take our material relations seriously. Using recycled paper, rather than paper made of virgin fibers, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and protects natural resources—saving not only trees but also energy and water needed for manufacturing. However, the commitment to use recycled paper comes with several challenges—economic, practical, and aesthetic— and entangles us, producers of this book, and you, dear reader, in a set of relations worthy of attention. Despite being produced from waste, recycled paper is more expensive than new paper from virgin fibers. This is because of the extra steps needed to create recycled material compared to manufacturing a new product. Additional processes include paper collection and recovery, sorting, removal of adhesives, staples, and other things that may be attached to the paper, pulping, and de-inking. Another consideration of concern is that paper fibers degrade when they are recycled, losing their strength and length. As a result, paper created from reused fibers is less durable and weaker. In addition, it is not as soft as paper from virgin fibers, with lower absorbency rates and worse color retention. Since the characteristics of recycled paper depend on the properties of the waste paper used for its production, recycled papers differ greatly not only by type, but even from batch to batch, presenting the design process with multiple challenges. Because of the varying paper qualities and white tones, no standard exists for recycled paper and color-binding proofs are therefore not possible. Moreover, some studies suggest that recycled paper might be less hygienic compared to paper from virgin fibers.1 This is owing to the starches used as binding ingredients, which may serve as a breeding ground for bacteria and germs. Last, but not least— and of particular significance to this book— recycled paper contains increased amounts of endocrine disrupting chemicals. Although recycled paper requires less bleach and other potentially harmful chemicals than virgin fiber paper, it can contain ink residue and other contaminants. Ink, adhesives, and other substances, such as those used for surface treatment of paper and board packaging, are detached from the fibers’ surface during the repulping process. Studies indicate that small amounts of chemicals of concern, including endocrine disrupting chemicals, such as polyfluorinated compounds, bisphenols, or phthalates, can still be detected in paper made from recycled materials.2 From the perspective of environmental health, the recycling of paper is desirable; however, recycled paper containing potentially harmful chemicals may pose a health hazard to humans.

The decision to print on a more expensive, yet weaker, less reliable, and potentially toxic recycled paper is a commitment that is not separate from, but instead bound within this book and the ideas explored in it—a material choice to acknowledge dependencies, vulnerabilities, and sensitivities of contemporary life extending beyond our individual selves. Inspired by multispecies feminist theorist Donna Haraway’s proposal for more-than-human sympoietic action nurturing common well-being and survival on a damaged planet, our making-with recycled paper marks the commitment of this book to “stay with the trouble” by affirming and embracing impure, inconsistent, weak, and damaged forms of being in/with the Anthropocene.

It was a pleasure to be invited for a remote round table in the context of the Eco-Design Marathon taking place at the Beirut campus of the Lebanese American University (LAU).

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has launched several initiatives that aim to address the worldwide sustainability issue and in 2021 established The West Asia Sustainable Fashion Academy (WASFA) which engaged its students in a three-day zero-waste fashion design marathon powered by LAU Fashion Design Program. The initiative included also sessions hosted by experts in sustainable fashion and hands-on projects.

The webinar, organised and moderated by Jalal Moghraby of LAU faculty and titled ‘ Jumping on the Zero Waste Bandwagon : How to Start? ‘  aimed at helping students and practitioners interested in integrating Zero Waste Pattern Cutting and Design into their practice find a starting point. 

During the webinar I finally talked again with Dr. Holly McQuillan which I first met in 2011 during Yield exhibition at Textile Art Center in New York. She introduced her research and projects in the field of Zero Waste Pattern Cutting and I warmly suggest to read her thesis and browse online documentation!

Then Mohsin Sajid gave and overview on his work with Denim and how to approach Zero Waste Pattern Cutting in production.

Finally I shared the Zero Waste potential in using Digital Fabrication with a Modular Design approach and hands-on experience with agile prototyping.

Mentre esploravo la storia della produzione tessile islandese mi sono imbattuta in alcune ricercatrici che hanno investigato la tradizione nordica con un interesse specifico del ruolo del femminile nella società e con un approccio interdisciplinare. Una di loro è l’antropologa e archeologa Michèle Hayeur Smith, autrice del libro di recente pubblicazione intitolato “The Valkyries’ Loom – The Archaeology of Cloth Production and Female Power in the North Atlantic”, risultato di un’analisi comparativa di frammenti di tessuto prodotti nell’arco di circa 1000 anni. Non ho ancora letto il libro, ma l’autrice è stata abbastanza generosa da pubblicare articoli e tenere lezioni in video permettendomi di approfondire l’argomento.

Ho scoperto il suo lavoro interessandomi al percorso storico delle pratiche di tessitura locali, soprattutto dopo aver visitato il Museo Nazionale d’Islanda a Reykjavik e aver visto, per la prima volta, un telaio verticale a pesi.

Si tratta di un telaio neolitico ampiamente diffuso nell’industria artigianale islandese ma completamente scomparso dopo che i danesi hanno rivoluzionato la produzione tessile locale a partire dal 17° secolo. Fino ad allora, anche se la produzione tessile rappresentava un’industria chiave per l’economia locale, non esisteva un’organizzazione specifica che la gestisse o una produzione centralizzata, e nemmeno delle corporazioni. I danesi non solo importarono telai orizzontali e filatoi, ma tolsero la produzione che era in mano alle donne, centralizzando il lavoro nelle città e formando principalmente uomini:

“Durante i primi 800 anni di esistenza dell’Islanda, le donne erano interamente responsabili della produzione dei tessuti e sebbene il ruolo degli uomini e delle donne nel sistema di produzione della lana fossero complementari, non è errato affermare che le donne fossero alla base del sistema economico islandese, garantendo a un livello molto elementare la sopravvivenza della loro gente in questa terra aspra. I cambiamenti tecnologici nel 18° secolo devono aver portato a una completa riorganizzazione dei ruoli delle donne all’interno della società islandese, e l’orgoglio un tempo acquisito grazie produzione tessile svolta nelle fattorie da donne che sovrintendevano altre donne, e senza il controllo da parte di mercanti o mecenati diminuì, diventando centralizzato e progressivamente integrato nel mondo industriale, anche se molto più tardi rispetto ad altri paesi europei”¹

Dopo il passaggio al telaio orizzontale il contributo delle donne si limitò alla fase di filatura, mentre la tessitura divenne un lavoro per uomini e nel XIX secolo i telai verticali furono letteralmente dimenticati:

“Durante gli anni ’70 dell’Ottocento Jón Árnason, allora direttore del museo di Reykjavík, fece diversi tentativi per ottenere un vecchio telaio per le collezioni e per capire come veniva utilizzato. A quel tempo, era ovviamente diventato obsoleto. […] Anche Sigúrður Vigfússon, successore di Jón Árnason, svolse indagini sul telaio e ricevendo varie risposte alle sue richieste. […] Grazie a questi due direttori, il Museo Nazionale di Reykjavík dispone ora di informazioni molto rilevanti per lo studio del telaio verticale e come utilizzarlo in quella che doveva essere la sua forma più evoluta: la tessitura ad armatura saia (twill). […] Oltre al disegno, ai modelli e alla descrizione, c’è un telaio completo nel museo di Reykjavík con un pezzo di stoffa non finito, e anche due travi e un montante. Per ne sappiamo, queste sono le uniche parti dei telai verticali che sono sopravvissute in Islanda.”²

Quindi, fondamentalmente c’è stato un periodo durato più di 800 anni in cui la tessitura era un affare esclusivo delle donne e il contesto in cui avveniva non riguardava semplicemente il lavoro domestico perché la produzione tessile aveva un ruolo centrale nell’economia islandese.

Prima di entrare nei dettagli di quel periodo, facciamo un passo indietro nella storia dell’Islanda quando fu unificata verso la fine del IX secolo. In quel momento, i diversi abitanti che vivevano sparsi sull’isola crearono un’assemblea generale, chiamata Alþing (Althing), riunendo tutti i capi come un Commonwealth. L’Alþing è considerato oggi il più antico parlamento sopravvissuto al mondo e grazie a questo sforzo costitutivo, sono state documentate una serie di leggi e norme, che ci hanno fornito approfondimenti anche sulla produzione tessile e sul suo impatto economico.

I reperti archeologici, trascurati per molti anni, ci mostrano che durante l’era vichinga c’erano molti tessuti diversi, con molte variazioni di colori e modelli di trama. La filatura e la tessitura nella società norrena, specialmente in quell’epoca, erano attività che richiedevano molto tempo poiché creare tessuti a partire dalla lana è un lavoro molto intenso e i tessuti erano utilizzati per molti usi quotidiani e non.

I tessuti non venivano prodotti solo per vestiti, borse, tende, ma anche come vele per le navi vichinghe e indumenti religiosi. Dopo la conversione al cristianesimo, intorno all’anno 1000, si passa principalmente a due tipi di tessitura, il tabby e il twill. Il twill è diventato dominante soprattutto per un motivo specifico: la produzione di vaðmál:

“Vaðmál era un twill 2/2 prodotto secondo linee guida per la misurazione e la qualità registrate nelle sezioni delle leggi (búalög) che disciplinavano la produzione agricola nel codice di diritto islandese medievale.”³

Vaðmál non era solo un pezzo di tessuto, era un oggetto in cui i rapporti di prezzo e valore potevano essere espressi in unità specifiche nel periodo in cui l’Islanda non aveva una valuta. La sua importanza crebbe nel medioevo perché sostituì l’argento, molto più comune in epoca vichinga ma divenuto raro in seguito.

Il termine Vaðmál è composto da due parole: vae, “stoffa tessuta”, e mál, che significa “misura” o “unità”. Può essere tradotto con “misura di stoffa” o in un senso monetario come “denaro-stoffa”⁴. Il Vaðmál era prodotto principalmente da donne con telai verticali e rappresentava la valuta principale per acquistare e vendere merci a livello locale, all’estero ma anche per pagare le tasse:
“Intorno al 1100 il passaggio dal metallo al panno in lana divenne si consolidò a tal punto che Alþing iscrisse una legge che fissava i prezzi per tutti gli oggetti immaginabili – inclusi oro e argento – ribadendo il precedente rapporto di “sei ells⁵ nuovi e non usati fatti in casa per oncia”. Allo stesso modo, numerosi statuti che dotavano chiese e monasteri esprimevano il valore delle donazioni in centinaia di tessuti fatti in casa. Il sistema era applicato anche all’estero. […] alla fine dell’XI secolo il precedente standard stabilito dall’argento, fondato sulle attività aggressive e sporadiche dei vichinghi, era stato sostituito dallo standard del tessuto casalingo, basato sul lavoro pacifico e costante delle donne tessitrici. Questa situazione prevalse fino al 1300 circa, quando il pesce essiccato sostituì il filato fatto in casa come principale valuta di esportazione. A quel tempo l’espressione dei valori in centinaia di tessuti era così ben consolidata che i tessuti continuarono a essere uno standard di valore, sebbene nello scambio effettivo fosse poi stato sostituito dal pesce essiccato. Le donne erano coinvolte nella preparazione e conservazione del pesce, ma gli uomini erano i principali approvvigionatori della nuova merce.”⁶

Se il ruolo di questi telai gestiti dalle donne per centinaia di anni ha avuto un ruolo così centrale nella società islandese, perché sono scomparsi in questo modo?

Il motivo non sembrerebbe solo economico o utilitaristico, ma piuttosto legato alle dimensioni simboliche della filatura e della tessitura e alla loro connessione con gli aspetti spirituali dell’esistenza, la vita, la morte e la crescente influenza della religione cattolica sulla società islandese. 

Nella mitologia norrena le tre Norne tessevano il filo della vita di ogni essere, assegnando il destino a ogni mortale e a ogni dio. Si chiamano Urd (il passato), Verdandi (il presente), Skuld (il futuro) e sono analoghe alle nostre Moire o delle Parche rispettivamente della mitologia greca e romana e sono anche loro collegate all’artigianato tessile come un insieme di atti magici destinati a influenzare il presente e il futuro attraverso rituali specifici. 
Nel più famoso dei canti in lingua norrena intitolato Darraðarljóð, dalla saga di Njáls, le Valchirie oltre a guidare i guerrieri uccisi nel Valhalla, scelgono anche coloro che muoiono e sopravvivono in battaglia, e lo compiono usando la magia e la tessitura . Nello specifico il poema descrive la visione di un uomo che vide le Valchirie tessere l’esito di una famosa battaglia che ebbe luogo vicino a Dublino nell’anno 1014. Stava camminando la mattina presto e avvistò 12 cavalieri entrare in un dyngja, il pergolato vicino alla casa usato dalle donne per tessere. Incuriosito dalla scena, si avvicinò e sbirciò dalla finestra. Solo allora si rese conto che i cavalieri erano donne, impegnate a lavorare con un telaio verticale, usando intestini umani come fili, una freccia come navetta e teschi umani invece di pietre al posto dei pesi sul fondo del telaio . Dopo aver terminato il processo di tessitura, le vide strappare in pezzi il tessuto per influenzare l’esito della battaglia che si svolgeva lontano da dove si trovavano, ed esprimendo così la credenza molto pagana per cui esiste una forza spirituale in alcuni oggetti e con l’atto delle distruzione è possibile libera e indirizzare tale energia accumulata con il lavoro impiegato per farli.

Questi atti magici fanno parte di una serie di rituali complessi chiamati Seiðr, legati sia al racconto che alla creazione del destino e in grado di aggiungere una dimensione sacra agli oggetti mondani di uso quotidiano. 

Seiðr non è un tipo di stregoneria nordica, come è interpretato da molti rappresentanti della nuova ondata pagana contemporanea, ma è un’antica forma di divinazione perché ha varie analogie con lo sciamanesimo dei Sami⁷ in quanto è caratterizzato da stati di coscienza acquisiti con tecniche di trance per attingere a conoscenze nascoste, influenzare positivamente la fortuna, rimodellare il destino di qualcuno tirando e muovendo dei fili. Il termine Seiðr è infatti associato alle parole “Stringhe” e “Corde” che si possono creare filando la lana per ottenere appunto il filato. Questo atto di produrre il filo di lana è un potente processo iniziale di creazione di tutta una serie di beni culturalmente utili a partire da una materia prima, proprio attraverso l’organizzazione delle fibre posizionati in modo casuale e orientati in fili coerenti che possono essere poi intrecciati in un tessuto.

Gli strumenti utilizzati durante i processi di lavorazione incorporano un significato aggiuntivo. Ad esempio le rocche (distaff) erano usate anche come bacchette magiche, il sedile di legno chiamato kubbstol, usato durante l’attività di tessitura, aveva anche una funzione nei rituali, e il telaio verticale divenne “un simbolico ‘stipite’ che conduceva in un altro mondo, e la cornice su cui il tessuto del destino umano viene intrecciato”. ⁸

Non è appropriato definire le praticanti di Seiðr come streghe perché implicherebbe connotazioni negative. È più corretto usare il termine profetesse che in Islanda erano chiamate Vǫlva, letteralmente portatrici di bastone.

Agli occhi della società norrena, questo tipo di divinazione non era appropriato per gli uomini, e coloro che lo praticavano erano considerati poco virili, effeminati, sessualmente passivi probabilmente a causa – suggeriscono alcune studiose – del tipo di sessualizzazione dei rituali che coinvolgono l’uso delle rocche e che potrebbe essere stato usato per ottenere uno stato di estasi o orgasmo attraverso la masturbazione rituale. Solo Odino, uno degli dei principali della mitologia norrena, fu uno dei pochi uomini a praticare questa magia perché l’aveva appresa direttamente da Freyja, la dea della fertilità, del sesso, dell’amore e della guerra, e riconosciuta come l’archetipica Vǫlva.

ll ruolo delle profetesse era accettato in tutte le prime culture germaniche e menzionato anche nei testi romani di Tacito e Cesare, descrivendone l’influenza politica soprattutto in tempo di guerra. In effetti, molte tombe di donne dell’età vichinga includevano rocche, gioielli e altri strumenti che rappresentano il loro ruolo sociale e il loro status nella società:

“I bastoni usati nei rituali e ritrovati in contesti archeologici riflettono chiaramente la forma di rocca. La veggente che porta un tale oggetto con sè indica l’abilità nel tessere e modellare i fili del destino umano, così come il suo alto status sociale e anche un elemento divino che lei stessa incarna. In questa interpretazione, il suo bastone è anche un oggetto strettamente connesso a una serie di altre pratiche domestiche: dalla tosatura delle pecore al processo di filatura e all’atto di tessere la stoffa su un telaio. Tutte queste azioni fanno parte di un più ampio processo di “creazione” premeditata, ossia di produrre qualcosa secondo uno schema o una procedura rigorosamente definiti.”⁹

In un articolo su questo argomento, la ricercatrice Karen Bek-Pedersen spiega la relazione tra il concetto di destino nella tradizione norrena e il lavoro tessile: 

“Per tessere un pezzo di stoffa, il telaio deve essere predisposto con un ordito – ossia i fili longitudinali che sono legati al telaio stesso – e la parte del processo che è più rilevante in questo contesto è l’infilatura dei licci. […] L’ordine in cui i fili dell’ordito vengono tirati attraverso i licci costituisce la base del disegno sul tessuto finito […] Il disegno disposto nell’ordito, infatti, limita notevolmente le opzioni per ciò che il tessitore può fare con la trama perché, una volta che l’ordito è stato impostato, non può essere cambiato. E’ infatti impossibile modificare l’ordito a metà di una tessitura e, se si commettono errori nell’impostazione dell’ordito, questi passeranno attraverso il tessuto, mentre la trama può, in una certa misura, essere sbrogliata per correggere eventuali errori. […] Naturalmente, la trama è importante come forza che attualizza l’ordito, ma la trama è solo co-creatrice e dispone solo di un numero limitato di scelte; è nell’interazione tra trama e ordito che emerge uno schema e la natura della decisione del tessitore diventa chiara. […] È qui che il concetto di destino si adatta così bene. Il destino, in quanto verità inevitabile che esiste già all’interno di una persona prima che agisca, può essere paragonato allo schema che è presente nell’ordito già prima che inizi la tessitura. […] Il destino nella tradizione norrena è presentato come un processo di attualizzazione, come un’interazione tra ciò con cui si è dato di lavorare e ciò che si fa con esso; ma piuttosto che rappresentare il destino come un inesplicabile potere soprannaturale che si impone alle persone dall’esterno, mostra il destino come qualcosa che proviene dal profondo delle persone ed è vissuto come parte integrante della personalità dell’individuo. L’interazione tra trama e ordito sul telaio del tessitore è un buon modo per descriverlo, e questo è, credo, uno dei motivi per cui la metafora del destino come tessitura funziona così bene.”¹⁰

Il tessuto simbolico della realtà è questa complessa visione antica del mondo in cui passato, presente e futuro sono fili intrecciati come un arazzo di eventi e si connette con una tradizione precristiana che le tre figure mitologiche Norne incarnano, influenzando la vita degli umani e degli dèi.

La connessione dei rituali Seiðr con la filatura e la tessitura si basa sul senso di trance e concentrazione che si verifica durante la loro pratica, che aiuta a mettere il focus sullo scopo della vita, utilizzando canti e tecniche meditative, cercando di modificare gli eventi forzando la volontà sulla vita stessa, propria e degli altri in senso buono o cattivo, in un processo di presa di coscienza delle strutture che ci condizionano e nell’acquisire la capacità di ritesserle. 

L’Islanda medievale era una cultura unica con molti costumi pagani ancora diffusi nella società perché il passaggio al cristianesimo avvenne molto più lentamente a partire dall’anno 1000: 

“La maga nella letteratura islandese rimane la figura dominante, in contrasto con la maga nella letteratura continentale, dove è stata trasformata in una strega con i tratti della lascivia e del cannibalismo. La questione centrale è il motivo per cui questa demonizzazione ha avuto luogo nel continente e non ha avuto luogo in Islanda. La risposta è il cristianesimo. Questa nuova religione denigrava il paganesimo. L’Islanda si convertì al cristianesimo nel 1000 d.C., mentre l’impero romano divenne ufficialmente cristiano alla fine del IV secolo. Il paganesimo era importante nella cultura islandese, e la continua presenza della maga nella letteratura ne è una conferma..” ¹¹

La scomparsa dei telai verticali può quindi essere interpretata più come una trasformazione del ruolo delle donne nella società islandese, lentamente favorita prima dalla conversione cristiana formale e poi con il passaggio al protestantesimo nel 1530:

“La maga era una figura complessa nell’alto Medioevo, una figura creata dalle culture giudaico-cristiana, germanica e greco-romana che in seguito si svilupparono nell’Europa della prima età moderna. Le donne furono associate alla stregoneria a causa del loro ruolo di ostetriche, infermiere, cuoche e custodi della casa. Come madri, erano anche collegate al ciclo di vita dell’uomo e della natura. La loro conoscenza delle erbe le aiutava a produrre pozioni che potevano curare o avvelenare, o causare sterilità o fertilità. Il cristianesimo denigrava la strega; la nuova religione è arrivata a cambiare l’immagine della donna nella società.”¹¹

All’interno di queste fonti interdisciplinari sembra emergere un quadro più chiaro. Il ruolo delle donne sagge come tessitrici di valuta, maghe, guaritrici, ostetriche e molto spesso anche consigliere politiche, è passato dal rappresentare un ruolo fondamentale della comunità, all’essere percepita come problematica, in base a un nuovo codice sociale ed etico che si è diffuso prima attraverso la letteratura ecclesiastica del Quattrocento e poi con la successiva caccia alle streghe. 

Questa trasformazione è al crocevia di un insieme di processi sociali che coinvolgono, da un lato le relazioni economiche e sociali ridisegnate dalla crescente importanza del mercato, e dall’altro dall’acquisizione luterana della chiesa cattolica nel XVI secolo, culminata nell’approccio mercantilista del monopolio commerciale danese-islandese che cambiò completamente, come spiegato sopra, il sistema della produzione tessile.

Silvia Federici nei suoi libri, ci ha aiutato a creare queste connessioni e ha fornito un’interpretazione più ampia della caccia alle streghe: “Nominare e perseguitare le donne come “streghe” ha aperto la strada in Europa al confinamento delle donne al lavoro domestico non retribuito. Legittimava la loro subordinazione agli uomini dentro e fuori la famiglia. Ha dato allo stato il controllo sulla loro capacità riproduttiva, garantendo la creazione di nuove generazioni di lavoratori.” ¹²

Ora tocca a noi tuffarci negli archivi ed estrarre molte più storie che non sono state ancora raccontate. Solo se identifichiamo i diversi fili del nostro ordito possiamo riuscire a tessere il ruolo che vogliamo avere e creare il destino che intendiamo abbracciare nel nuovo mondo che sta arrivando.

While exploring the history of textile production in Iceland I stumbled upon some researchers who’ve been exploring northern tradition with a deeper interest in the female role in society within an interdisciplinary approach. One of them is the anthropological archaeologist Michèle Hayeur Smith who recently authored a book called “The Valkyries’ Loom – The Archaeology of Cloth Production and Female Power in the North Atlantic”, which is the result of a systematic comparative analysis of textile fragments spanning 1000 years. I haven’t read the book yet, but she’s been generous enough to publish articles, and give video lectures to dive into the topic in some way. 

I discovered her work when I started to be interested in the historical path of local weaving practices, especially after visiting the National Museum of Iceland in Reykjavik and saw, for the first time, a warp-weighted loom. 

This tool is a neolithic loom which used to be quite widespread in the Icelandic cottage based industry but it disappeared completely after the Danish took over and revolutionised local textile production starting from the 17th century. Up until then, even if textile production was a key industry, there was not a specific organisation or centralised production, or even guilds. Danish not only imported flat threaded looms and spinning wheels, they also took the production out of the hands of women centralising the work in cities and training mainly men:

“Throughout the first 800 years of Iceland’s existence, women were wholly responsible for making cloth and although men’s roles and women’s roles in the total system of wool production were complementary, it would not be incorrect to say that women were at the root of the Icelandic economic system, ensuring at a very basic level the survival of their people in this harsh land. Changes in technology in the 18th century must have brought on a complete reorganisation of women’s roles within Icelandic society, and the pride once gained from textile production carried out on farms by women overseeing other women and without the control by merchants or patrons decreased, becoming centralised and progressively integrated into the industrial world, even though much later than other European countries.”¹

After the transition to the horizontal loom the contribution of women became limited to the spinning phase, while weaving became a job for men and by the 19th century, warp-weighted looms were literally forgotten:

“During the 1870s Jón Árnason, then Director of the museum in Reykjavík, made several attempts to obtain an old loom for the collections, and to find out how it was used. By that time, it was obviously obsolete. […] Sigúrður Vigfússon, Jón Árnason’s successor, also made investigations about the loom and received several replies to his inquiries. […] Thanks to these two directors, the National Museum in Reykjavík now has some very important data for the study of warp-weighted loom and its use in what must have been its most highly developed form: the weaving of twill. […] In addition to the drawing, the models, and the description, there is a complete loom in the museum of Reykjavík with an unfinished length of cloth, and also two beams and one upright. As far as is known, these are the only parts of warp-weighted looms that have survived in Iceland.”²

So, basically there was a period lasting more than 800 years when weaving was an exclusive women’s affair and the context was not simply a matter of domestic work because textile production had a central role in the Icelandic economy. 

Before going into some more details of that period, let’s take a step back to the history of Iceland when it became unified around the end of the 9th century. In that moment, the different scattered inhabitants living on the island created one general assembly, called Alþing (Althing), gathering all the chieftains as a Commonwealth, and Alþing is considered today the oldest surviving parliament in the world. Thanks to this constitutive effort, a series of laws and norms have been documented, bringing us insights also around textile production and its economical impact. 

The archaeological findings, overlooked for many years, show us that during the Viking Age there were a lot of different textiles, with many variations of colours and weave patterns. Spinning yarn and weaving fabric in the Norse society, especially during that age, was a time-consuming activity as it’s a very intensive labour to create woollen textile to be used for many daily uses.

Textiles were not made just for clothes, bags, curtains, but also as sails for viking ships and religious garments. After the conversion to christianity, around year 1000, there’s a shift to mainly two weave types, tabby and twill. Twill became dominant especially for a specific reason: the production of vaðmál:

“Vaðmál was a 2/2 twill produced according to guidelines for measurement and quality that were recorded in the sections of law (búalög) that governed agricultural production in the mediaeval Icelandic law code.”³

Vaðmál was not just a piece of textile, it was an object in which the relationships of price and value could be expressed in specific units in those times when Iceland didn’t have a proper currency. Its importance grew in the mediaeval time because it substituted silver, which was much more common in the Viking Age but became rare later on. 

The term Vaðmál is composed by two words: vae, “woven cloth”, and mál, meaning “measure” or “unit” . It can be translated as “measure of cloth” or in a further monetary sense as “cloth-money”⁴. Vaðmál was mainly produced by women with warp-weighted looms and was the main currency to buy and sell goods locally and abroad but also to pay taxes:
“Around 1100 the transition from metal to woollen cloth became so well established that the Alþing inscribed a law that fixed prices for all imaginable items – including gold and silver – reiterating the previous ratio of “six ells⁵ new and unused homespun per ounce.” Likewise, numerous charters endowing churches and monasteries expressed donations in hundreds of homespun. The system was applied overseas as well. […] by the end of the eleventh century the previous silver standard, founded on men’s violent and sporadic activities as vikings, had been replaced by the homespun standard, based on women’s peaceful and steady work as weavers. This situation prevailed until around 1300 when dried fish replaced homespun as the leading export. By this time expression of values in hundreds of cloth was so well established that homespun continued as a stan­dard of value, although in actual exchange it had been replaced by dried fish. Women were involved in the preparation and preservation of the fish, but men were the primary procurers of the new commodity.”⁶

If the role of these looms operated by women was central to Icelandic society for hundreds years, why did they disappear in such a way?

The reason could be not just economical or utilitarian, rather it’d seem connected with the symbolic dimensions of spinning and weaving and their connection with spirituality, life, death and the increasing influence of the Catholic religion on Icelandic society. 

In Norse mythology the three Norns wove the life-thread of each being, assigning the destiny for each mortal and god. They are called Urd (the past), Verdandi (the present), Skuld (the future) and are analogous to our Moirai or Parcae of the Greek and Roman mythology and connected with textile crafting as magical acts intended to influence the present and the future through specific rituals. 
In the most famous of the songs in the Norse language entitled Darraðarljóð, from the saga of Njáls, the Valkyries in addition to guiding the killed warriors in Valhalla, also chose those who died and survived in battle, and they accomplish it using magic and weaving. Specifically the poem describes the vision of a man witnessing Valkyries weaving the outcome of a great battle that took place near Dublin in the year 1014. He was walking early in the morning and saw 12 knights riding and entering a dyngja, the bower next to the house used by women to weave. Intrigued by the scene, he walked over and peered through the window. It was then that he realised the riders were women, who were then engaged in working with a warp-weighted loom, using human intestines as threads, an arrow as the shuttle, and human skulls instead of stones as weights at the bottom of the loom. After finishing the weaving process, they tore the woven textile into pieces in order to influence the outcome of the battle happening far away from their location and expressing the very pagan belief that there’s a spiritual force in some objects and that destroying them is an act of releasing the energy accumulated through making it.

These magic acts are part of a series of complex rituals collectively termed Seiðr, related to both the telling and the shaping of fate and adding a sacred dimension to mundane objects. 

Seiðr is not a type of nordic witchcraft, like many contemporary new wave pagans are promoting, but it’s an ancient form of divination and has similarities with Sámi⁷ shamanism because it deals with states of consciousness acquired with trance techniques to reach hidden knowledge, influence positive luck, reshape the fate of someone pulling and pushing the strings. The word Seiðr is in fact associated with the words “Strings” and “Cords” which usually can be created by spinning wool to obtain yarn. This act of making the yarn from wool is the powerful initial process of creating culturally useful goods from raw material, through organising the random fibres into coherent threads which can be then woven into a cloth.

The tools used during the crafting processes embed a different meaning. For example distaffs were also used as magic wands, the wooden seat called kubbstol, used during weaving activity, had a function in rituals, and the warp-weighted loom became ”a symbolic ‘doorframe’ leading into another world, and the frame on which the fabric of human fate is woven”. ⁸

It’s not appropriate to define the practitioners of Seiðr as witches because it would imply negative connotations. It’s more correct to use the word seeresses which in Iceland were called Vǫlva, literally staff-bearer. 

At the eyes of Norse society though, this type of divination was not appropriate for men, and those who practiced it were considered unmanly, effeminate, sexually passive probably because of – some scholars suggest – the type of sexualisation of its rituals involving staffs might have been used to obtain a state of ecstasy or orgasm through ritual masturbation. Only Odin, one of the principal gods of Norse mythology, was one of the few men who practised this magic because he learnt it from Freyja, the goddess of fertility, sex, love and war, and recognised as the archetipal Vǫlva. 

The role of the seeresses was accepted in all early Germanic cultures and also mentioned in roman texts by Tacitus and Cesar, describing their political influence especially during times of war. Indeed many women’s graves of the Viking Age included distaffs, jewellery and other tools representing their social role and status in society:

“The staff of sorcery from archaeological contexts clearly reflect the form of distaffs. Seeress bearing such an item signifies her skills in spinning and shaping the threads of human fate, as well as her high social status, and a divine element which she herself embodies. In this reading, her staff is also an item closely connected to a number of other domestic practices — from shearing the sheep to the process of spinning and the act of weaving cloth on a loom. All those actions are a part of a greater process of premeditated ‘creation’ — that is, making something according to a strictly defined scheme or procedure.”⁹

In a paper on this topic, researcher Karen Bek-Pedersen explores the relationship between the concept of fate in Old Norse tradition, and textile work: 

“In order to weave a piece of material, the loom must be set up with a warp — these are the threads running lengthwise that are attached to the loom itself — and the part of the process that is most relevant in this context is the threading of the heddles. […] The order in which the warp threads are drawn through the heddles forms the basis of the pattern on the finished cloth […] The pattern laid down in the warp, in fact, significantly limits the options for what the weaver can do with the weft because, once the warp has been set up, it cannot be changed. It is not possible to change the warp in the middle of a piece of weaving and, if there are any mistakes made in setting up the warp, these will carry all the way through the woven cloth, whereas the weft can, to some extent, be unravelled to correct any mistakes. […] Naturally, the weft is important as the force that actualizes the warp, but the weft is only co-creator and only has a limited number of choices at its disposal; it is in the interaction between warp and weft that a pattern emerges and the nature of the weaver’s decision becomes clear. […] This is where fate fits in so well. Fate, as that inescapable truth that already exists within a person before they act, can be likened to the pattern that is present in the warp already before weaving commences. […] Fate in Old Norse tradition is presented as a process of actualization, as an interplay between what one is given to work with and what one does with it; but rather than portraying fate as some inexplicable supernatural power imposing itself on people from the outside, it shows fate as something that comes from deep inside of people and is lived out as an integrated part of the individual’s personality. The interplay between warp and weft on the weaver’s loom is a good way of describing this, and this is, I believe, one reason why the metaphor fate-as-weaving works so well.”¹⁰

The symbolic fabric of reality is this complex ancient vision of the world in which past, present and future are threads woven together as a tapestry of events and it’s so connected with a pre-christian tradition that the three mythological Norns, influencing the life of humans and gods, embody it.

Seiðr’s relationship with spinning and weaving is built upon the sense of trance and concentration happening during the practice, in order to focusing on purpose in life, using chants and meditative techniques, trying to modify events by forcing will upon life itself and the life of others for good or bad, in a process of becoming aware of the structures that condition us and acquiring the ability to re-weave them. 

Medieval Iceland was a unique culture with many pagan customs still widespread in society because the transition to christianity happened much slower starting from year 1000: 

“The sorceress in Icelandic literature remains the dominant figure, in contrast to the sorceress in continental literature, where she has been changed into a witch with the traits of lasciviousness and cannibalism. The central problem is why this demonization of the sorceress took place on the continent and did not take place in Iceland. The answer is Christianity. This new religion denigrated paganism. Iceland converted to Christianity in 1000 A.O., whereas the Roman Empire became officially Christian at the end of the fourth century. Paganism was important in the culture of Iceland, and the continued presence of the sorceress in the literature is verification of this.” ¹¹

The disappearance of warp-weighted looms can then be interpreted more as a transformation of women’s role in Icelandic society being slowly fostered first by formal Christian conversion and then with the switch to Protestantism in 1530:

“The sorceress was a complex figure in the early Middle Ages, a figure created by Judeo-Christian, Germanic, and Greco-Roman cultures that later developed into early modern Europe. Women became associated with sorcery because of their roles as midwives, nurses, cooks, and keepers of the household. As mothers, they were also connected with the life cycle of man and nature. Their knowledge of herbs helped them to produce potions that could cure or poison, or cause sterility or fertility. Christianity denigrated the witch; the new religion also changed the image of women in society.”

Within this interdisciplinary framework, connecting the various sources, a clearer picture seems to emerge. The role of sage women being weavers of currency, sorceresses, healers, midwives, and very often also political advisers, transitioned from being a key part of the community, to being perceived as witches under a new social and ethical code which became more widespread with the ecclesiastical literature of the fifteen century and then witch hunt. 

This transformation is at the crossroad of a cluster of social processes involving, on one side the economic and social relations reshaped by the growing importance of the market, and on the other by the Lutheran takeover of the Catholic church in the 16th century, culminating in the mercantilist approach of the Danish–Icelandic Trade Monopoly which changed completely, as explained above, the way textile production was organised.

Silvia Federici in her books, helped us creating these connections and provided a broader interpretation of the witch hunt: “Naming and persecuting women as ‘witches’ paved the way to the confinement of women in Europe to unpaid domestic labor. It legitimated their subordination to men in and beyond the family. It gave the state control over their reproductive capacity, guaranteeing the creation of new generations of workers.” ¹²

Now it’s our turn to dive into the archives and extract more stories that haven’t been told yet. Only if we identify the diverse strings of our warp we can really weave our role and craft the fate we want to embrace in the new world that is coming up.

“Weaving Sense” è un progetto di ricerca itinerante che ho iniziato questa estate con l’obiettivo di esplorare come filati e fibre conduttive possano essere utilizzati in macchine tessili, per esempio telai tradizionali o computerizzati, per creare sensori morbidi. Mescolando materiali intelligenti con filati naturali all’interno del processo di tessitura è possibile creare sensori tessili di diverse forme ed estetiche. Il campo delle pratiche di progettazione di tessuti intelligenti è all’intersezione di diversi ambiti diventando un iconico ponte interdisciplinare tra la tradizione tessile, il design dell’interazione, la scienza dei materiali e l’elettronica.  Con “Weaving Sense” vorrei continuare il mio lavoro tra l’artigianato e la tecnologia per produrre tessuti sensibili che sembrano semplici tessuti ma sono in grado di comunicare con la sfera digitale. Quest’area interdisciplinare, attraverso i suoi artefatti, ma anche workshop e installazioni, mi permette anche di sollevare domande sull’impatto dell’ubiquitous computing. Le domande di ricerca che mi stanno accompagnando in questo percorso abbracciano questioni sociali e tecniche e portano in superficie il ruolo che la produzione tessile ricopre nella storia dell’umanità e il suo profondo rapporto con l’informatica.

Mentre le pratiche artigianali di tessitura sono state tramandate di generazione in generazione per secoli, oggi molte abilità rischiano di andare perdute e, con esse, i significati culturali incorporati nei processi di fabbricazione. Con “Weaving Sense” l’idea è costruire un archivio di design tangibile e basato sull’artigianato tessile che potrebbe diventare un punto di partenza per molte istituzione per coinvolgere l’interesse di molte donne nell’elettronica grazie agli aspetti informatici culturalmente reattivi del progetto e fornendo punti di ingresso più familiari nel digitale o in altre attività STEAM.

Lo scorso agosto (2021), ho passato un mese ospitata dall’Icelandic Textile Center (ITC)  per sperimentare delle strutture tessili a partire dal loro archivio storico e altre risorse locali. Il viaggio è stato possibile grazie al contributo di iPortunus, uno schema di scambi finanziato dalla Commissione Europea per supportare la mobilità di artistə, creatorə e altrə professionistə culturali. Parte del risultato del mio percorso è stato presentato durante un evento pubblico  intitolato “Samkoma“: una mostra collettiva dove, insieme ad altre 7 artiste ospiti, ho mostrato alcuni prototipi realizzati nelle settimane precedenti per cercare di stimolare il pubblico locale di creativə e artigianə nel portare la tradizione tessile nel contesto delle interazioni digitali. Durante il weekend della mostra ho anche tenuto due sessioni di Wool Interactions un workshop per condividere le basi teoriche e un po’ di esperienza diretta su come creare sensori morbidi con lana cardata e la tecnica dell’infeltrimento ad ago con cui si possono realizzare oggetti bidimensionali e tridimensionali compattando le fibre di lana con un particolare ago appuntito e seghettato.

ll Centro Tessile Islandese e il laboratorio di tessuti digitali

Accanto al fiume Blanda, affacciato sull’Oceano Atlantico settentrionale e rivolto verso la Groenlandia, c’è un piccolo paese con meno di 900 abitanti, dove si trova Kvennaskólinn, edificio storico di proprietà dei comuni locali e dello Stato islandese, che dal 1879 al 1978 ospitò un collegio femminile con classi di artigianato tessile e cucina. 

Kvennaskólinn è oggi tenuto in vita con le attività della comunità e l’approccio innovativo del Centro Tessile Islandese (ITC) guidato da Elsa Arnardóttir – direttore – e Katharina Schneider – project manager, entrambi attive nel progetto finanziato dall’UE CENTRINNO che coinvolge anche la mia città, Milano.

Considero ITC un esempio da seguire per rendere possibile l’unione della tradizione tessile con l’approccio contemporaneo delle macchine per la fabbricazione digitale. Negli ultimi anni Elsa e il suo team, grazie a fondi nazionali ed europei sono riusciti ad attivare una serie di implementazioni che hanno reso questo luogo piuttosto isolato geograficamente, un punto di interesse per creativi professionisti e artisti provenienti da tutto il mondo.
Dal 2013 ITC ha infatti attivato un programma di residenze  e lo scorso maggio ha inaugurato un makerspace con diverse tecnologie di fabbricazione digitale tra cui una ricamatrice, una macchina per il taglio laser, e due telai computerizzati TC Loom.

Telai computerizzati e archivi di schemi digitali

L’ex scuola femminile di Blönduós donò il suo prezioso archivio di modelli di tessitura islandesi e materiali didattici del XIX e XX secolo proprio ad ITC che nel 2016, insieme all’artista tessile ed esperta di tessitura Ragnheiður Björk Þórsdóttir, ha avviato “Bridging Textiles to the Digital Future” un percorso di tre anni con l’obiettivo di analizzare, fotografare e digitalizzare i modelli di tessitura e renderli disponibili online a studiosi, artisti e designer.

Il progetto è stato approvato e ha ricevuto finanziamenti dall’Icelandic Technology Development Fund (Rannís) ed è stato presentato nel giugno 2020 durante la DesignMarch a Reykjavík.

Tutti gli schemi di tessitura disponibili nell’archivio online sono compatibili per essere usati su una nuova generazione di telai digitali chiamati TC Loom e sviluppati da Tronrud Engineering  per rendere semplice e veloce la realizzazione di pezzi unici, campioni, la prototipazione rapida e lo sviluppo di prodotto. Il telaio è controllato da un computer ma operato manualmente perchè è stato progettato per essere usato direttamente dai designer grazie a una bassa curva di apprendimento, soprattutto per persone che sono a proprio agio con l’uso di un computer e di software come Photoshop o Gimp, un suo analogo scaricabile e utilizzabile gratuitamente.

Prima di poterlo usare ho esplorato da lontano il potenziale del telaio TC loom e ho incontrato l’azienda nel 2020 (poco prima del lockdown!) durante una visita alla fiera Premiere Vision di Parigi. Infine, durante questa residenza ho potuto iniziare a sperimentare direttamente, imparare a configurarlo e utilizzarlo grazie ai suggerimenti e i consigli della stessa Ragnheiður Björk Þórsdóttir , di Hafliði Ásgeirsson di Fablab Reykjavik e dell’artista tessile Raina Nief che in contemporanea stava svolgendo la sua residenza utilizzando il secondo telaio presente nel laboratorio.

Sensori capacitivi e di pressione con motivi islandesi

Durante una delle prime lunghe serate all’ICT, quando il sole era ancora in cielo nonostante fosse quasi mezzanotte, ho sfogliato alcuni libri della collezione di libri tessili della biblioteca del centro e ho scoperto una pubblicazione basata sull’Ícelandic Sjónabók, una serie di manoscritti conservati nel Museo Nazionale d’Islanda, che sono stati analizzati e convertiti in formato elettronico per sensibilizzare e condividere il patrimonio culturale dell’isola. Il libro “Ornaments and Patterns found in Iceland” è un libro che colleziona i vecchi manoscritti Sjónabók ed è stato uno sforzo congiunto dell’Associazione islandese dell’artigianato, del Dipartimento di design e architettura dell’Accademia delle arti islandese e del Museo nazionale islandese.

Tutti i pattern del libro esprimono qualità di proporzione, simmetria, ripetizione spesso seguendo le regole dei numeri sacri e delle proporzioni divine, un’abitudine che durò fino al XVII secolo prima che scienza e religione si separassero e “la matematica fosse desantificata”.

Anche se per il nostro gusto contemporaneo questi pattern sono considerati principalmente dei semplici “ornamenti”, gli autori del libro ci ricordano che:

“Dobbiamo riabituarci a pensare all’ornamento come una regola e non come una decorazione. Ci è stato insegnato a fare una divisione tra arti applicate e belle arti. Questa distinzione sarebbe stata incomprensibile per gli antichi e le società del Medioevo; secondo la loro visione, c’erano due tipi di arte, le arti applicate e l’arte senza funzione. Il concetto di bellezza come qualità unica indipendente dalla necessità, così come l’estetica come campo speciale di studio dell'”arte senza funzione”, si sviluppò dopo l’Illuminismo nella seconda metà del XVIII secolo. Questa nuova definizione di bellezza ostacola la nostra comprensione dell’arte del Medioevo, dove tutto era collocato all’interno della regola della struttura a cui obbedivano anche l’ornamento e il motivo.”

L’output della mia residenza mirava alla creazione di alcuni campioni per testare le prestazioni di un telaio TC Loom nella creazione di sensori capacitivi e di pressione utilizzando fili conduttivi e mescolandoli con la lana locale. Ho seguito due approcci, da un lato ho mescolato la lana con il filo direttamente su una delle navette principali, e utilizzando due navette ho alternato trama conduttiva e non conduttiva; dall’altro ho creato una navetta più piccola e l’ho usata solo su una superficie di trama limitata in modo da creare aree conduttive sul tessuto che veniva a formarsi durante la tessitura.

Poiché la configurazione dell’ordito era piuttosto densa e il filo spesso, il tessuto risultante tendeva ad essere piuttosto piatto e resistente, rendendo più difficile agire come un sensore di pressione con una buona gamma di risposta.

Ecco perché nella seconda fase della sperimentazione ho testato un approccio diverso, tecniche di miscelazione e utilizzo di lana filata a mano su più fili di ordito e un motivo decorativo meno illustrativo.

Samkoma – La mostra

Nella mostra collettiva Samkoma, che in islandese significa “raduno”, ho mostrato un esempio di sensorialità capacitiva che collega ogni pattern a uno specifico canto runico, un particolare canto di gola che collega la tessitura alla magia. Parlerò di questo argomento nella parte 2 di questo post e mi concentrerò di più nella parte storica del patrimonio della tessitura islandese.

The idea behind the pilot is to create a new culture of manufacturing focused on shorter product cycles, as well as providing new assets, resources and circular economy networks mainly in the area of fashion and design.

During Milan Design Week 2021 we experimented the local use of left-overs of plastic filament (PLA) from 3d printing processes together with a local digital manufacturing and design lab called Superforma and a designer in residence Vicente Varella.

We then presented the action during Fab City Hub Voices, a series of webinars to learn about the challenges involved in activating such projects, but also to understand all the opportunities they open up for the local innovation ecosystem.

While craft practices of weaving have been passed down through generations, today manyskills are at risk of being lost and, with them, the cultural meanings embedded in the processes of making. Thanks to “Weaving Sense” project I plan to build a craft-based, tangible design archive which could become a starting point for any institution to involve women’s interest in electronics thanks to the culturally responsive computing aspects of the project and providing familiar points of entry into computing or other STEAM activities.

During August 2021, I  spent a month at Icelandic Textile Center (ITC)  to experiment weaving patterns from their historical archive and other sources thanks to the contribution of iPortunus, a scheme funded by the European Commission that supports the mobility of artists, creators and cultural professionals. The results were  presented with a public event  “Samkoma“: Pop-Up Art Exhibition where, together with 7 other hosted artists,  I showed the swatches I created during the past weeks to foster crafters and creatives in bringing weaving tradition in the digital realm of interaction. During the weekend of the exhibition I run also two sessions of Wool Interactions a workshop to share basic theory and hands-on experience on how to craft soft sensors with wool and smart wool using needle felting, a technique to create two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects by joining wool fibers through the use of a very sharp and notched needle.

Icelandic Textile Center and Digital Textile Lab

Next to the glacial river Blanda, overlooking the North Atlantic Ocean and facing Greenland, there’s a small town with less than 900 inhabitants,  where you can find Kvennaskólinn, a historical building  owned by the local municipalities and the Icelandic State, that from 1879 to 1978 hosted a women’s college with classes in handicrafts and cooking. 

The renovated Kvennaskólinn is today kept alive with community activities and the innovative approach of the Icelandic Textile Center led by Elsa Arnardóttir – director – Katharina Schneider – project manager both working also in EU funded project CENTRINNO which involves my city, Milan.

I consider ITC an example of how it’s possible to bridge textile tradition with the innovative approach of digital fabrication machines. In the past few years Elsa and her team, thanks to national and European funds managed to activate a series of implementations which made this decentralised location, a point of interest for creative professionals and artists from all over the world.
Since 2013 ITC activated a Residency programme  and last May inaugurated a makerspace with different digital fabrication technologies among which an embroidery machine, laser cut, and two TC Looms.

Computerised Loom and digital patterns archive

The former Women’s School in Blönduós donated its unique Icelandic weaving patterns archive and teaching materials from the 19th and 20th century to ITC and in 2016, together with textile artist and weaving expert Ragnheiður Björk Þórsdóttir started “Bridging Textiles to the Digital Future” a three-year project project aiming to analyze, photograph, and digitize weaving patterns, and make them available online to scholars, artists and designers.

The project was approved and received funding from the Icelandic Technology Development Fund (Rannís) and was presented in June 2020 during DesignMarch in Reykjavík. 

All the patterns available in the online archive are compatible to be used on a new generation of digital loom called TC Loom developed by Tronrud Engineering  which make it easier and faster for sampling, rapid prototyping and product development. The loom is computer-controlled and manually-operated because it is designed to be used directly by the designer thanks to its shallow learning curve, especially for people who are used to using a computer with design softwares like Photoshop or the freely downloadable Gimp.

I’ve been exploring the potential of the TC Loom since a couple of years and met the company back in 2020 during Premiere Vision in Paris. Finally, during this residency I could start experimenting hands-on and learn how to set it up and use it with the tips and tricks from Ragnheiður Björk Þórsdóttir, but also Hafliði Ásgeirsson of Fablab Reykjavik and textile artist Raina Nief who was doing her residency in the same period using the second loom of the lab .

Weaving capacitive and pressure sensors with Icelandic patterns

During one of the first long late evenings at the ICT, when the sun was still on even around midnight, I explored the collection of textile books in the library and I discovered a publication based on the Ícelandic Sjónabók, a series of manuscripts held in the National Museum of Iceland, which were analysed and converted in electronic format to raise awareness on the cultural heritage of the island. The book “Ornaments and Patterns found in Iceland” is a reference book of the old sjónabók manuscripts and was a joint effort of the Icelandic Handcraft Association, the Department of Design and Architecture at the Iceland Academy of Arts and the National Museum of Iceland.

All the patterns of the book express qualities of proportion, symmetry, repetition often following the rules of holy numbers and divine proportions, a habit which lasted until 17th century before science and religion separated and “mathematics was desanctified”.

Even if for our contemporary taste, these patterns are considered mainly mere “ornaments”, the authors of the book remind us that:

“We must retrain ourselves to think about the ornament as a rule and not as a decoration. We have been taught to make a division between applied arts and fine arts. Thi distinction would have been incomprehensible for the ancients and societies from the Middle Ages; according to their understanding, there were two kinds of art, applied arts and functionless art. The concept of beauty as a unique quality independent of necessity, as well as aesthetics as a special field of study of “functionless art,” developed after the Enlightenment in the second half of the 18th century. This new definition of beauty obstructs our understanding of art of the Middle Ages, where everything was placed within the structure rule that the ornament and pattern obeyed as well.”

The output of my residency aimed at creating some swatches in order to test the performance of a TC Loom in the creation of capacitive and/or pressure sensors using smart threads and mixing it with the local wool. I followed two approaches, on one side I mixed the wool with the conductive thread directly on one of the main shuttle, and using two shuttles I alternated conductive and non conductive weft; on the other side I created a smaller shuttle and used it only on a limited surface of weft in order to create conductive patches on the textile. 

As the warp setup was pretty dense and the warp thead was thick, the resulting textile had the tendency to be pretty flat and strong, making it more difficult to act as a pressure sensor with a good range of response.

That’s why in the second phase of the experimentation I tested a different approach mixing techniques and using hand-spinned wool on multiple warp threads and a less pictorial decorative pattern.

Samkoma – The exhibition

In the collective exhibition Samkoma, which in icelandic means “gathering”, I showed an example of capacitive sensing connecting each pattern to a specific Rune chant, a particular throat singing which connects weaving with magic. I will talk about this topic on part 2 of this post and dive more into the historical part of icelandic weaving heritage.

Qui sotto un piccolo riassunto dell’appuntamento milanese organizzato in due momenti principali, uno iniziale di presentazione e dibattito sui temi chiavi del progetto e una seconda parte dedicata al co-design di alcune direttrici di lavoro per lo sviluppo di un Fab City Hub milanese focalizzato su design e moda.

Il progetto si muove in continuità con la visione di Manifattura Milano, il programma del Comune di Milano che da quasi 3 anni promuove l’idea che “non c’è futuro sostenibile nelle città se non ripensiamo a dove e come si fanno le cose” e con cui ho collaborato, prima come WeMake e poi come Nema.

Sono super contenta di lavorare a questo progetto per i prossimi 3 anni non solo per il team milanese con cui lavoro e il network europeo composto da 26 partner molto validi, ma soprattutto perchè ci permette di lavorare con un po’ più di continuità a delle azioni per lo sviluppo di relazioni di collaborazione che valorizzino una serie di attori locali produttivi, con il supporto di cittadini e istituzioni pubbliche.

‘Life on Planet Orsimanirana exhibition at MK&G invites you to immerse yourself in an every-colour primordial mud of molecular consciousness, an archive of autonomous reflections, and a pumping funk of organic processes and DIY futurist narratives’.

Of course, ‘Orsimanirana’ is not a real planet, but rather a symbolic point in space located anywhere in the imagination that you wish. Apart from creating the new world, its primary function is as a meeting place for many international and local artists, designers, activists, and collectives such as Das Gängeviertel, Rimaflow, Hallo: Festspiele, The Institute for Radical Imagination, Macao, Park Fiction, HFBK, the Dirty Art Department, many others – and you.

As Carsten Rabe of Das Gängeviertel said ‘what is most important is that we all finally have the chance to meet each other’. The word ‘Orsimanirana’ is derived from Italian and Latin, and could be seen as a playful equation for the human condition, an existential enigma, or left simply as a blank abstraction: ‘Orsi’ – the Bear’s Head – as the primordial contradictory emotions of fear, guilt, and joy of death, in relation to the dark night.
‘Mani’ – the Man’s Hands – as our quest for domination over mortality through technology.
‘Rana’ – the Frog’s Legs – as our chance to jump over perceptual, cognitive, and physical horizons.

“Perturbant Fluids”, installation by Obot, is a cellular projector made from simple materials.
It results from a humid, wet, fluid, sticky, greasy, soaked, contaminated
experience – a space where liquids pour. It visualises the multi-species
interdependence that keeps us alive as literally orgasmic. It aims to
enhance and disseminate bodily autonomy and rethink possible
relationships with the ‘perturbing’ entities that embody us. It is part of
ongoing research into radical optical consensus at 100x and 250x,
through a ‘commoning hack’ of the boundaries between what has long
been labelled strictly internal or external to the human body.

Radio conversation

L’altro aspetto del passato da cui è partita la mia riflessione è stata la sperimentazione di Archizoom e soprattutto di Lucia Morozzi con il progetto “Vestirsi è facile” esposto alla Triennale del Design milanese del 1973 e l’idea di abito come Nearest Habitat System. Mi sono avvicinata al lavoro di Archizoom grazie al volume Globaltools uscito per Neroeditions che mi ha aperto varie porte sul passato e il libro Dressing Design di Elena Fava, senza il quale il focus sull’ambito moda sarebbe stato molto più difficile da inquadrare. Da lì, in un rimbalzo di citazioni e incursioni in biblioteca per attingere ai numeri originali di Casabella mi sono resa conto come già all’epoca proprio gli Archizoom criticassero l’industria della moda perchè non sfruttava a pieno le tecnologie e le fibre a disposizione, limitandosi a un’estetica decorativa e puramente imitativa dell’artigianale senza dotarsi di una metodologia specifica, perché senza una tradizione di ricerca innovativa.

Infine nel pezzo ho cercato di riassumere le riflessioni nate nel percorso che da Serpica Naro, passando per Openwear mi ha portato fino a WeMake, dove la sperimentazione sulla moda è partita proprio dalla necessità di inserire tecnologie di fabbricazione digitale senza lasciare indietro le pratiche artigianali e manifatturiere della nostra tradizione; forzando, in qualche modo, il modello classico di makerspace per far dialogare il taglio laser con la macchina da cucire e il banco di elettronica con la tessitura.

Nel linguaggio tecnologico il termine remanufacturing indica la rigenerazione di un prodotto ottenuta sostituendo le parti usurate con elementi nuovi o recuperati da oggetti preesistenti. Nell’epoca della postproduzione, tale termine offre la possibilità di analizzare e provare a indirizzare le tensioni fra i caratteri che il Made in Italy ha ereditato dal passato e le qualità che ne stanno guidando la trasformazione. Riguardo al passato, caratterizzano la produzione Made in Italy la nostalgia per un modello di sviluppo basato sulla piccola e media impresa, la tendenza alla mitizzazione di una stagione di successi e consumi crescenti, il conforto della nicchia dei beni di lusso e la valorizzazione dell’heritage. A guidare la trasformazione sono, invece, la rete di connessioni globali, i modi di produzione e consumo senza limiti guidati dalla rivoluzione digitale e post-digitale, l’acquisizione di aziende da parte dei grandi gruppi che operano su scala planetaria, le imprese indipendenti spinte dall’innovazione, le nuove forme di artigianato e di microimprenditorialità su base locale legate alle tecnologie emergenti. Ne deriva una riconfigurazione geografica, creativa ed economica della produzione, che il volume esplora con una prospettiva interdisciplinare articolandosi in due sezioni, dedicate l’una ai modelli di rigenerazione del Made in Italy e della sua filiera produttiva, l’altra alla trasformazione dei discorsi e delle narrative che circolano intorno ad esso e contribuiscono a rinnovarne la definizione.

Il progetto pilota di Covmatic è stato installato nell’ospedale Bolognini a Seriate, in provincia di Bergamo, moltiplicando di dieci volte la capacità di testing attuale della struttura in uno dei luoghi più colpiti dalla pandemia. E potenzialmente potrebbe essere installato ovunque in quanto la documentazione e le istruzioni sono disponibili gratuitamente per tutti i laboratori del mondo che hanno bisogno di scalare in modo efficiente i test.

Come funziona?

Il sistema di base è costituito da 10 robot Opentrons in grado di manipolare i vari liquidi e 3 macchine per svolgere qPCR, ossia amplificare il DNA in tempo reale e capire se il virus è presente o no in un campione.

Nel video qui sopra vedete i robot di Opentrons, molto simili a delle stampanti 3d, e inclusi nell’hardware che gestisce il processo di testing Covmatic.

Opentrons, azienda fondata nel 2013 a Brooklyn e finanziata grazie a un Kickstarter, ha progettato e produce robot in grado di automatizzare e velocizzare il lavoro ripetitivo che solitamente viene fatto in un laboratorio, come per esempio trasferire con delle pipette quantità di liquido in diverse provette che verranno poi analizzate (leggi articolo su Nature per approfondire). Si tratta di hardware open source a basso costo (prezzo base da 5mila dollari) affiancato da una serie di applicazioni scaricabili da un’area del sito e realizzate anche da terze parti.

Il modello interessante di questo robot è appunto di diffondere il più possibile la macchina abbassando le barriere all’ingresso dei costi rispetto all’utilizzo di dispositivi robotici e facilitare la condivisione di “applicazioni” per gestire varie routine, in modo sia gratuito che a pagamento.

Questo cambio di prospettiva sulle tecnologie in ambito medicale che le vede come una piattaforma su cui far girare delle applicazioni, allarga il collo di bottiglia generato dall’approccio chiuso e for-profit di un settore cruciale dell’era pandemica che ci troviamo ad affrontare. Senza contare il superamento dell’obsolescenza programmata che ti obbliga dopo un tot di anni a sostituire macchinari nonostante non sia necessario, proprio per mancanza di pezzi di ricambio o simili. Questo capita a molte delle tecnologie presenti in laboratori ed ospedali, come abbiamo scritto l’anno scorso in questo articolo di Cure Ribelli in cui raccontammo le storie dei care-giver non umani.

Il progetto Covmatic aiuta a comprendere l’impatto che FOSH (free and open source hardware) scientifico e medicale può avere sulla società e superare quella visione ingenua che vede il “free” come gratuito invece che “libero”. Come è successo con le stampanti 3d open source, ora sta accadendo con strumenti medicali, proprio rendendo disponibili gratuitamente con licenze appropriate le conoscenze in modo che chiunque possa studiarli, apprenderli, modificarli, personalizzarli e commercializzarli, ma senza mai renderli esclusivi. In questo modo si mettono le basi per un vero sistema di cura globale, distribuito, accessibile e soprattutto sostenibile economicamente.
