WEAPONS: Bows and Crossbows

While definitely not able to dish out as much damage as your conventional firearm and the same rate of fire, a bow and crossbow has its advantages in a post zombie apocalypse world.

It’s quiet and it won’t draw as much attention as a gun would (unless it’s equipped with a suppressor of course) which is important if you’re going more for stealth and would like to slip away unnoticed. In a head on battle with a horde of undead however, the bow and crossbow is not the most ideal weapon to have at hand. Its ammo is limited and it takes time to reload.

Crossbows

Wikipedia define a crossbow as a “weapon consisting of a bow mounted on a stock that shoots projectiles, often called bolts (usually several times heavier than conventional arrows) or quarrels”. These weapons were used in the wars of East Asia, Europe, and the Mediterranean.

Crossbows are currently still in use for target shooting and hunting.

The Bow and Arrow

The bow and arrow is one of the oldest weapons devised and employed by man and is common to most cultures. It used to be a staple of most armies but the development of gunpowder and muskets made it obsolete. Today the bow and arrow is used mostly for hunting and for sports (archery).

As with crossbows, the bow and arrow is still currently in use for target shooting and hunting.

The Importance of a Suppressor in a Post Zombie Apocalyptic World

Of all the things you’ll need in a post zombie apocalyptic world (food, shelter, water, and ammo) you’d think that a suppressor would be the last thing you’d need but it could be more important than you think.

A suppressor is a device (usually a metal cylinder) you attach to part of the barrel of a firearm which in turn “reduces the amount of noise and flash generated by firing the weapon”. Suppressors also “reduce firing recoil significantly, primarily by diverting and trapping the propellant gas”.

In most zombie movies, the undead is usually depicted as being attracted to light and sound.

There will be times when one will need to off a zombie but often times the noise created by the shot will attract more of the undead. This is where the suppressor comes in. A suppressor equipped firearm will allow you to dispatch of a zombie calmly and deliberately without worrying that the sound will attract others of the walking dead.

Spartan Weapons VS Zombies

Nowadays, when you speak of Spartans, what immediately come to mind is the movie 300 based from Frank Miller’s graphic novel of the same title. The Spartans were awesome warriors able to hold off hundreds of thousands of the Persian Empire’s army with just 300 of their own with nothing but shields, spears, swords, and guts.

The Persian army however, was composed of men. How would the Spartan’s weapons fare against a horde of undead?

The Dory
The Spartan Warrior’s spear was called a dory and it was his weapon of choice. About 7 to 9 feet long, the dory was used in tandem with their shields. This was used to great effect in formation with under similarly armed Spartans (one of the reasons why the Spartans have such a fearsome reputation).

While a stabbing action might be effective for human enemies, I don’t see the Spartan dory routine being too effective against zombies. Sure, they may hold them back for a while but since they’re dead already they’re just going to keep standing back up and in greater numbers until they finally overwhelm the defenders.

The Xiphos
While the Spartan Warrior’s main weapon was his dory, they also carried a short sword called a xiphos. In the event that the warrior loses or breaks his spear, he falls back to his sword usually made or iron about 12-18 inches in length. This sword was designed for close quarter combats where a longer sword may become more of a liability than an advantage.

While a short sword will mean that you’re going to have to get up close and personal to dispatch an undead, it’s certainly going to be more effective especially if your main zombie dispatch strategy is decapitation.

The Kopis
The Kopis is another alternative weapon used by the Spartan Warrior. It is a vicious hacking weapon in the form of a thick, curved iron sword capable of inflicting more damage as compared to the dory and the xipos.

When it comes to zombies, more is good and the kopis certainly delivers this.

The Aspis
The aspis (also called a hoplon) was the Spartan Warrior’s shield. Weighing at around 30 pounds, the aspis not only served as a defending tool but also as a weapon. With its heavy weight the aspis can be used to bash an enemy to stun them and then attack using either the dory or one of the short swords. The shield can also be used to kill using its thin edge to decapitate enemies on the ground.

The idea of decapitating a zombie on the ground is a good idea but the aspis cannot be used as the primary weapon in battling the undead (especially if they’re in numbers). It would be more advantageous to have a shield partnered with either a kopis or a xiphos.

Knight Weapons VS Zombies

The Medieval Knights were members of the “warrior class of the Middle Ages in Europe who followed a code of law called chivalry. The word Knight is derived the from Old English word “cniht” which means "boy" or "servant".

“Knighthood is generally granted by a head of state to selected persons to recognize some meritorious achievement.”

Safe to say that though Knights were considered gentlemen they were also some of the most bad-ass motherfuckers around during the Middle Ages and definitely were not to be messed with which leads one to wonder how the Medieval Knights and their weaponry would fare against a horde of the walking dead.

Broadsword
No other weapon has been closely associated with the Knight than the broadsword, his primary weapon. A good broadsword is a flexible weapon which can be used for both slicing and stabbing. A much heavier weapon than a katana, it’s an ideal weapon for decapitation purposes.

War Hammer
War hammers generally had a typical hammer (the blunt end) and a point on the other much like a pick axe. While it may not be the most ideal tool for taking off the head of the undead, it is however perfect for caving in their skulls and dishing out massive physical trauma.

The Mace
The mace was the basic weapon of a knight and was made of wood with no metal or with spikes sticking out of the head. In the hands of an expert, it is a weapon to be feared and rightly so. Similar to the war hammer, it’s good for a good bonk to the head for the undead.

The Flail
The flail can dish out tremendous damage with its ball and chain but it would be a hard weapon to use especially against a horde of undead since it’s hard to control and direct even with experience and training. It can however generate a greater force than the mace or war hammer.

Lance
Another weapon closely associated with the Knights, the lance was used to dismount other Knights on horseback. Despite cutting a romantic figure it doesn’t prove that effective in dealing with the undead since it’s mostly a stabbing weapon (and the head is a pretty small target).

One thing’s for sure though, the Medieval Knight’s armor will definitely make it harder for the undead to take a bite out of him. On the other hand, the armor’s weight will make it easier for zombies to catch up to him especially if he’s not on horseback.

Dead Zone’s annual flash mob dead walk is back!

This year’s walk is going to be happening on a Sunday, October 30, 2011 from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM and will begin in front of 6788 Standard Chartered Building, Ayala Avenue, Makati City.

Come in costume and be a part of this year’s dead walk flash mob. Meeting time is 3:00 PM and commencement of the dead walk will start 30 minutes to 1 hour soon after.

Last year flash mob was held in Timog Avenue. Check out the video footage by below by Justin Villanueva.

Ninja Weapons VS Zombies

Ninjas, the ancient warrior shrouded in mystery are one of ancient Japan’s most enduring legends. Modern pop culture has elevated the ninja to almost mythical proportions honored in art, literature, and film. Depictions of the ninja “range from realistic to the fantastically exaggerated…for humor or entertainment”.

“A ninja (or shinobi) was a covert agent or mercenary of feudal Japan specializing in unorthodox arts of war. The functions of the ninja included espionage, sabotage, infiltration, and assassination, as well as open combat in certain situations.”

As such the ninja was armed with non-traditional weaponry. So how well would the ninja’s arsenal fare against the walking dead? Let’s find out.

The Katana
The katana is one of the traditional Japanese swords worn by the samurai class of feudal Japan but was also the ninja's weapon of choice. Sometimes carried on the back, the katana had several uses beyond normal combat such as purchase on high walls (used in tandem with a rope) and to stun enemies (in tandem with various powders such as pepper, dirt, or dust).

Against zombies, there probably would be no room for the subtle uses of the katana. No, it would strictly be a hack and slash affair and, with the katana’s reputation for its razor sharp edge, it will be one of the ninja’s most effective weapons against the undead (and personally my weapon of choice if it comes down to several options).

Shurikens
Shurikens are small knives, nails, darts, and the star shaped discs (the most popular image) which the ninja used to distract his enemy before he struck the lethal blow during a battle. Some shurikens are dipped in toxin or poison which are meant to slow down an enemy or kill him outright.

While shurikens are admittedly very cool, I don’t see them as being very effective against zombies even if they were dipped in toxin or poison. Let’s face it: how effective can chemical warfare be against something that is already dead?

Short Bows
The ninja's bows were usually smaller than the traditional yumi or longbow presumably to make it easier to carry and transport. Short bows may stand a better chance at dispatching one of the walking dead than a shuriken with its greater damage potential especially if you shoot for the zombie’s head (one of the sure fire ways to kill it). It becomes the weapon of choice for those individuals who do not want to go up close and personal when dealing with the undead.

Kusarigama
The kusarigama, or the chain and sickle, was also used by the ninja. Consisting of a weight on one end of a chain and a sickle on the other, the kusarigama is a farming implement but can be used as a versatile long range (chain and weight) and short range weapon (sickle). Simple tools such were often used as weaponry so that ninjas are free to carry them in the open to disguise their true purpose.

The kusarigama takes a lot of training to be able to wield it effectively. It might prove effective against 2-3 zombies coming at you one at a time but will it perform just as well when it’s 5-6 coming at you from all directions? Maybe…maybe not.

It’s definitely an interesting concept. Maybe Hollywood would be kind to grace us one of these days with a Ninja and Zombies movie and see on celluloid how these arcane weapons (and the warrior who wields them, of course) would stand up against the zombie apocalypse.

Survival Skills: First Aid Skills Part 1

Given that doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel will be in short supply in the event of a zombie apocalypse it’s probably a very good idea to learn some first aid skills because it can literally save your life (not to mention that it might prevent you from becoming one of the walking dead if the zombie apocalypse turns out to be bacterial or viral in terms of cause)!

So pay attention, people!

First of all, what is first aid?

“First aid is the provision of initial care for an illness or injury. It is usually performed by non-expert, but trained personnel to a sick or injured person until definitive medical treatment can be accessed. Certain self-limiting illnesses or minor injuries may not require further medical care past the first aid intervention. It generally consists of a series of simple and in some cases, potentially life-saving techniques that an individual can be trained to perform with minimal equipment.”

Many have the impression that first aid is modern invention but it’s not.

“The instances of recorded first aid were provided by religious knights, such as the Knights Hospitaller, formed in the 11th century, providing care to pilgrims and knights, and training other knights in how to treat common battlefield injuries.”

What are the aims of first aid?

1. Preserve life
2. Prevent further harm
3. Promote recovery

In the next installment we will be discussing some of the basic first aid skills that you should know in order to survive in a post zombie apocalypse world.

Survival Skills: Finding Safe Drinking Water

One of the most obvious things you’re going to need in a zombie apocalypse world, aside from guns and ammo (of course), is water.

It is said that human beings can survive without food for a long time (weeks, even months) as long as they have water. Take away water and, depending on your activity (given that it’s a zombie apocalypse scenario, it’s going to be a LOT), you probably won’t last more than three days. So keeping yourself well hydrated is going to be one of the most important consideration you should have if you’re going to survive in this dreadful new world filled with the walking dead.

There are three ways to treat contaminated water: filtration, boiling, and chemical treatment.

Filtering water doesn't purify it so germs and bacteria is still very much a concern but it does reduce particles and sediment thus making the water taste better.

Boiling is the most common and certain way of killing all germs and bacteria. It will not however, remove chemical based pollutants.

Chemical treatment via water purification tablets is the best way to treat suspect water.

If you’re in the wilderness there are some signs to watch out for that may help you find water.

Birds tend to circle water spots
Insects stay close to water
Rocky crevices or big leaves that may contain rain water

Try to remember these things because your life may very well depend on it.
