You’ll notice this sequence is actually divided into 4 number combinations but only three have any usefulness to us. First is the initial digit, in this case “X″:

The “X″ is the “language group identifier” which here indicates English.

Next is the six digit series “NNNNNN″:

This is the “publisher identifier.

This is the “title identifier,” and it’s assigned by the publisher to a particular book or a sprecific edition of a book. For instance, I might assign this ISBN to a softcover edition, and another ISBN to an ebook edition.

The last digit,"C"

X-NNNNNN-AA-C

This digit is mathematically calculated and helps assure that the rest of the ISBN has been recorded or scanned accurately.

The 13-digit came into use in 2007.

The format is the same, but it adds “978″ at the beginning, and identifies the following string of numbers as an ISBN.

This ISBN would become 978-X-NNNNNN-AA-C

(different string of numbers generates a different check digit at the end).

Publishing Professionals Can Read ISBN Details

Book sellers, publishing professionals, and others who know how to “read” the ISBN, can tell for instance that you are publishing your first book. If your title identifier is “0″ or “00″ obviously you have started at the top of your ISBN logbook and just assigned the first number. If your publisher identifier is 7 digits, leaving only 1 digit for book identifiers, you are only planning to publish a few books. All these little clues from the ISBN give some insight into a publisher and their books.

For ISBN 5-digit add-on

Per BISG:

First digit is "5" for $US
First digit is "4" for $CAN
First digit is "0" for GBP
Last four digits are price * 100
use 59999 (or 49999 etc.) for price of $100 or more
90000-98999 for internal use (BISG recommends 90000 if no price designated and 5 digit code not used for internal use)

if you have a book and the price is USD $20.99, you will need to fill in 52099 in the 5 digit supplement, the first digit in this case is 5 for USD.

Some new self-publishers won’t need to start a new business, since they already have a business structure of some kind. Consultants, therapists, and free lance writers, for instance—all candidates for self-publishing—usually do business as a company, and can publish their books in the same way they do the rest of their business.

If you don’t have a company already, you’ll need to start one. The laws of the local area where you live will govern the exact process by which you set up a company. And keep in mind that you should make the decision about what kind of company to have in consultation with an attorney or your tax adviser. There are three basic types of companies that can be book publishers:

Sole proprietorship—The simplest business model, an operation controlled by you alone.
Corporation—A commercial entity is created in which you and others hold shares. Most complex business structure.
Partnership—A contractual relationship in which two or more people exercise control of the company.

Most new self-publishers will undoubtedly decide to be sole proprietors.

One of the parts of book publishing that seems to confound newcomers to the field is the purpose and use of the International Standard Book Number (ISBN). Usually the ISBN appears to be the same thing as the ubiquitous Bookland EAN scannable barcode that graces the back covers of almost all books printed today.

ISBN was created as a stock-keeping identifier. Originating in the United Kingdom, the concept of a unique identifier for each version of a published book became an international standard in the 1970s.

2 Reasons to Own Your Own ISBNs

Most of the self-publishers I’ve worked with are setting up their own publishing companies and funding their project in the expectation of becoming profitable. In every case I’ve advised them to buy their own ISBNs. Here’s why:

The ISBN contains within it a “publisher identifier.” This enables anyone to locate the pubisher of any particular book or edition. If you use a “free” ISBN from an author services company or a subsidy publisher, that company will be identified in bibliographic databases as the publisher.
Owning your own ISBNs gives you the ability to control the bibligraphic record for your book. This is an important part of your book’s metadata, and is a key component in your book being discoverable by online searchers. This has a powerful influence on your efforts to attract search engine traffic to your title.

Introduction

The Web server (running the Web site) thinks that the data stream sent by the client was 'malformed'

i.e. did not respect the HTTP protocol completely.

So the Web server was unable to understand the request and process it.

400 errors in the HTTP cycle

Any client goes through the following cycle:

Obtain an IP address from the IP name of the site This lookup (conversion of IP name to IP address) is provided by domain name servers (DNSs).

Open an IP socket connection to that IP address.

Write an HTTP data stream through the socket.

Receive an HTTP data stream back from the Web server response. This data stream contains status codes whose values are determined by the HTTP protocol. Parse this data stream for status codes and other useful information.

Fixing 400 errors - general

There is a low-level problem in the client or the Web server or both. 95% of the time this is because of a problem on the client system
e.g. there is something unstable on your PC running the Web browser.

What has changed since you started getting the HTTP 400 problem ?. In general terms, think about what has changed on your PC since you first started seeing the problem. This may cover any of the items mentioned above.

How stable is your Internet connection ?.You can try to check that the Web site you are actually visiting is the one you think you are visiting. For example, you may have a DNS problem. You can check this using a ‘ping’ test. A DNS problem may be caused by your ISP or may be on your own system e.g. in a ‘hosts’ file.

Is your PC secure ?. If your PC is not well-protected, then all kinds of problems may occur - including HTTP 400 errors. If you run Windows, stay uptodate with automatic security updates from Microsoft and possibly consider getting a registry cleaner. Always have good anti-virus and spyware protection. Invest in a hardware firewall if you can afford one. Be sensible surfing the Web - block pop-up windows and avoid bad sites. If your PC not secure then Web traffic out from your PC to the Internet may be secretly corrupted by malware (spyware, viruses, etc.).
Are you installed web-based software ?. Some social networking and games sites ask you to download and run software on your PC so you can interact with other people on the Internet directly (without using your Web browser). This software, if badly written or even criminal, can corrupt all HTTP traffic from your PC. At bad action, you may have to reinstall your operating system again (possibly losing all your personal data on your PC if you do not have backup).may be defective. Try to find an upgrade or security fix for the problem browser.
If you recently changed some configuration options in the problem browser, reversing the change to see if that helps to fix this problem.
Do you get the error on big Web sites ?. If you get the problem on quite a small site, visit some of the bigger sites like Amazon, Ebay, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo. If you get the problem only on small sites, it indicates a problem with only those sites or the traffic from your PC to those sites.
Do you get the error on simple URLs ?. If you get a problem with a long complicated URL (such as http://www.xxx.com?PHPrequest=643&value=dres&cookies=No) but not with a shorter simpler URL for the same site (such as http://www.xxx.com), this can indicate a problem with the Web server on the site you are trying to visit. This is not conclusive evidence, but is a good starting point. Contact the owners of the Web site and describe the problem to them. You may find for example the problem occurs with POST methods (you are both submitting data to the Web site and retrieving data from the Web site), but not with GET methods (you are only retrieving data from the Web site).
Do you have a cache problem ?. clearing your cookies, browser cache and browsing history in your Web browser. Disable or remove any third-party cache or ‘web accelerator’ software you installed. Then try rebooting your PC . If this action not fix the error, but at least may eliminate any problem due to settings on your PC.
