Cowon S9. My Review
Cowon is famous for it's media players. Latest in the line is this beautiful S9 Curve. The first thing I look for when I get a new player is the latest firmware. Cowon is on the ball. Version 2.05 came out before mine arrived, and I ordered mine from Jetmall.net the first day they were available in the U.S.. Version 2.06 came out 12/24. We're already up to 2.30 and the S9 just keeps getting better. I've always thought Cowon's players were bulky and not very practical or portable. The S9 changes the rules. Clearly Cowon has noticed that beautiful, innovative looks can help sell players.

What they didn't do was forget it's a media player. Music is best is class. Video is amazing shown on it's 3.3" AMOLED widescreen. Photos follow suite. If you're old enough to need reading glasses the Zoom feature makes apps with text easier to read/see with a simple slide of your finger. File format support is broad. You can drag and drop media directly onto the S9, use Windows Media Player, or use the Jetaudio app that comes included to put media on it.

Now with 32gb capacity you'll have room for movies and photos worth watching on that beautiful screen. Get the inexpensive video output cable and serve up movies to your TV. You'll get up to 50 hours music and 10 hours video playback with one battery charge. Don't forget FLASH game/app support, FM radio with recording, voice recording, and Bluetooth for wireless headphones. There is no Wifi or what it brings, but it's also $100 less than the iPod Touch of the same memory capacity.

Be sure and keep the firmware updated. Cowon is sending updates out each month, and each one has brought significant improvement. Best touchscreen player of 2009 I'll predict.
Stellar MP3 player!
Update: I have owned the S9 for a few weeks now. Here are my thoughts...

Great form factor. Battery life is amazing -- the unit can go about 2 weeks before the battery runs low. Stellar audio quality. The UI has it's quirks -- navigation for common tasks can require a few presses, but it's still a lot better than other units I've owned. I've been using Media Monkey to manage my music library and sync with the S9, and this has proved to be a winning combination. I splurged and purchased the Pro version. It will take me some time to fix the tags in my MP3 files, but Media Monkey does a pretty good job at most library management that I need, and I have a lot of music. I am very happy with this player, and would still give it 5 stars.

This is the 3rd MP3 player that I have owned. My first was an iRiver HP-120, which was absolutely awesome, but was getting a little technologically dated. I then made the mistake of buying a Zune 120 GB. The capacity, build quality, and form factor were awesome, but the walled garden of MS's terrible software eventually led me elsewhere. Furthermore, the sound quality was just OK (and no EQ settings!), and the battery life was way overstated by MS. The online 'social' was useless to me -- I'm a grown adult, and I own a vast music collection that I started when I was a kid. I purchased a Cowon i6 for my wife about 2 years ago, and she still loves and uses it everyday -- so I thought I would give the S9 a try. I read some encouraging reviews of it, and it's slim pickin's these days for a true MP3 player not aimed at the average teenager. I received it this morning, and let me tell you, this little device is awesome. The sound quality is truly impressive, as others have reported, which is one attribute that Cowon players are known for. The screen is also amazing -- the OLED technology really shows off it's stuff on this thing. The touch screen is actually quite nice, and responds well. Those with small or large fingers shouldn't have a problem here. The dedicated volume, track, play/pause buttons are welcome, and the build quality is high. The selection of materials, the fit in the hand, and the size and weight are perfect. I also purchased a Cowon leather case for mine, which fits like a glove, while allowing full access to all of the important bits. I'm still learning the UI and the various features, but it seems like almost every aspect of the device can be customized. The UI is great, fairly easy to navigate, and the device responds quickly. I can't comment on the battery life yet, but I'm sure that it will be as advertised. The unit charged initially for 2.5 hours on AC when unboxed, and I upgraded to the latest firmware before starting to use it.

In short, this MP3 player looks like a keeper. I feel like an idiot for not buying it sooner. I will post an update to this review as I continue to become familiar with it, but so far, this looks like the one for me. Check one out for yourself -- I think you'll agree.
Great mp3 player for advanced users
Pros:

Conclusion:
This is a great player. The screen is absolutely great, except in direct sunlight, which makes it pretty much unreadable. The price is great for the capacity, and the fact that you can run different user interfaces (UI) means that if you don't like the way it is by default (which isn't bad), you can just download one that you like. If you know how to program flash, you can make your own, because Cowon makes it really easy.

The greatest thing is that Cowon is constantly updating the firmware, about once a month. Each one brings new features, such as the latest (as of late July 2009) was gapless playback for many music formats. Just make sure that you rip your music properly.

The S9 has great video format support, including Xvid, DivX, and WMV. The videos look great on the screen, and playback is smooth.

It supports both MSC (Mass storage, like a flash drive) and MTP (media transfer protocol, use Windows Media Player or equivalent to sync), so you can get the best of both worlds.

It's really a good player if you want a nice looking, touchscreen player,and you are moderately good with computers, but you don't want Wi-Fi and tons of other features you may not use. My thinking was that I would rather have something that does a few things really well, like the S9, rather than something that stretches itself too thin, like an unnamed Apple product.

"Excellent little device" 2010-11-04

This little gem from Philips deserves a lot more credit & notoreity than it seems to recieve.
The player has a metallic shell/caseing, very durable, and after many months of use, the shell remains
in brand new condition.
Similarly, the screen, unlike an iPod, seems to be scratch resistent.
I've taken this thing out in rainstorms, dropped it on the pavement, stored it in my pocket with a set of keys, and still it remains somewhat pristine.
This didn't occur to me until recently, upon looking at it.
It reminds me of those older, yellow Sony Sport Walkmans, in that it is difficult to damage.

The battery life is pretty incredible, as i seem to recharge it much less than any other player i've owned.
They say 24 hours & i actually believe them!
FULLSOUND is another accurate description, because the player does sound great in this mode.
This is a perfect player for someone that wants a MUSIC player.

The only negatives are the original headphones were weak for a player of it's caliber.
I discarded the Philips earbuds, replaced them with Sony, and the difference was substantial.
Another problem, for me, was the annoying on/off slider placement.
It's on the heel of the device, and you need to hold the player in one hand & use the thumbnail on the other to
slide the player in off mode.
One positive of this placement is that it's almost impossible to accidentally turn the device off or on.

In Summary, it's a very fine player at a fraction of the iPod price.
Transferring music & video is a breeze, with no need to download any additional software.

Right now, i'm bouncing between this Philips & my Sony mp3 player, and though i love both devices, the Philips
seems to be my usual preference.

"Not a great MP3 Player" 2010-10-25

I liked the other features of this mp3 player and it does what it is suppose to do other than it's ear plug. Ear plug quality is very low. I didn't get feel of listening music, and I thought that mp3 is bad. I tried it with another set of my own ear plug and I observed a significant improvement.

When I'm buying mp3 player I expect it's ear phone to be nice so that I can enjoy music. Buying a nice ear phone separately adds the cost to the product and it's not worth that cost.

I don't like it because it's not a good product until you buy another set of ear plugs.

"This is a good player for audio books" 2010-08-22

I was looking for an MP3 player with bookmarking feature, like Creative Labs Zen series. But I could not find Creative Zen anywhere locally, so I settled for this one.

I like this one because it has an important feature that a lot of other players don't have. It can remember where you last play the material. After I turned it off at midpoint and turned it back on, it started right where I left off. This is really important for people listening to audio books from Netlibrary or Overdrive Media, where the files tend to be long.

The buttons are easy to negotiate and intuitive without you having looked up the manual. The menu are grouped intelligently. I like the Folder view feature. This is better than the view through other options such as "Music". Because sometimes you rename a folder of ripped files, but only in Folder view would you see the changed name. So it's easier to identify the files than using other options.

I just got it so could not see any cons yet. However I don't like the phone jack, it's located at the bottom of the player. Other things at the bottom: USB port, Mic, Reset button hole. The volume control buttons are on the top of the player.

It has FM radios. It can scan and preset stations with strong signals.

It also has "Audible" for listening books download from [...]. In this option, it has "Bookmarks" too, useful for those downloading from [...].

The player feels sturdy and does not look like a toy, that's a plus. Overall, this is good value for the money.

"Songs play spotty" 2010-07-30

My last mp3 player was also a philips and I loved the long battery life. I lost it so I bought this one, but it was a big disappointment, since the songs have this noise-silence spots that last for a second and its annoying. I like my music to play fluidly.
It went right back to target.

Edited review: since I don't want to be a jerk, i do want to give the player a lot of credit for the functionality of the buttons (its not one of those annoying touch sensitive pads that seldom get it right) and the battery life being about 24 hrs.

"OK player" 2010-10-24

Pros:
-Cheap price
-Decent camera. The picture quality is about the same as my cell phone's. Video camera is nice.
-I like watching videos. The software it came with to download music videos was corrupted, but it's ok since I like using RealPlayer. Easy to convert and watch videos on the player.
-Radio, voice recorder and the EBook (.txt files) features are nice but I don't have use for them.
-Battery life is ok.
-Plays mp3 and wma files, although for some reason album art doesn't show up for the wma files.
Cons:
-It takes a lot of fidgeting with the settings to get the sound right, but even then the sound isn't great.
-It's not hard to navigate, but you have to do a lot of clicking. And the buttons do click kinda loud.
-Sometimes I have to twist the earbuds into the jack a bit to get sound in both sides.
-It's to much of a hassle to make playlists, you have to add the songs one by one when they're playing. I don't even bother making them. If someone knows an easier way to make them please post how.
-You can add more memory with a micro SD card, but you can only listen or watch files from either the external or internal memory. It doesn't put your music or videos all together.
-Player feels kinda flimsy, but it comes with a silicone case.

Overall it's good player for the price, but I preferred my deceased Insignia Pilot over this because of the better sound quality even though it didn't have as many features.

I got it recently and I have only used it to listen to FM radio and to take casual pictures and videos. The other features I'll try at some later time. I already have another MP3 player.

The picture quality of stills is good, it does the job just fine. I was not expecting a high definition camera so I was not dissappointed. However, I was surprised at how good it is for close-up takes.

As for the videos taken with the camcorder, they come out OK. Mine has a small occasional skip, but no big deal since I use it only for casual videotaping.

I like the "TV Out" feature where you can connect the player to a television and share your pictures and videos on a larger screen. It comes with the cables for this purpose (the red, yellow and white trio).

If you wish to watch the videos taken with its camcorder on your PC, you first have to convert them from the AVI format they come in to the Windows format you'll need.

I am sharing on the front page of this product some pictures and posting here a video. I took them all with this device. The viewers can come to their own conclusions.

This digital camera/digital camcorder/FM Radio/Media Player, like all electronics, is very delicate and it should be handled with care. Even the sturdier looking electronics break easily if not handled properly. This one does not give the false impression of being strong, like others do.

Don't expect a quiet browsing of menus. This is not a touch-screen media player. It has buttons that make a noticeable "click" sound when pressed. However, I found the menus simple and easy to use once you figure out how to move around.

I just bought this at bestbuy a week ago. it works great for playing sound in my car hooked up to and amp and speakers. It was a little bit of a learning curve learning how to use it. I can imagine this mp3 player is only good for experienced electronics users. the menu is a little bit of a pain to navigate. the guide was sorta helpful. It feels a little cheap and light but that dosent bother me(you get what you pay for. buttons click not mush.

Now for the good
the equalizer is very decent on this mp3 player. very configurable. one of the best I have seen on an mp3 player yet. You can adjust 5 frequencies by hand, srs 3d, trubass, focus, center, definition, etc...

Camera and video recorder takes equivalent photos as any typical cellphone camera. not the best but it works quickly. not much delay. could have used a flash but beggars cant be choosers. great for taking closeups. there is no motion control. any movement and the photo is blurred.

Battery last about 20 hours for me after a full charge. no more batteries from the store yay.

the built-in radio is very nifty. when you get the hand of changing the channels and recording it becomes very useful. decent reception as long as you have a good pair of headphones plugged in.

The best feature of the whole thing is the "video out". as long as the "video out" setting is on in the settings menu it works like a dream. I use it to play videos to the monitors in my car so there is videos along side the blasting music.
No lag or skip. I recommend you use the .flv format for all your videos because it works great for me.(couldn't get any other format to work well)

I got this for my birthday and have had it for about 2 months now. At first it was very hard to use. It comes "turned off" and you need it "on" for it to charge on your comp via the USB port. Idk how many hours it took me to figure this out, almost told my aunt to take it back because it wouldn't charge *facepalm*

So i finally get it to charge, it is very easy to put things onto the unit. Connect it to your computer and open up where it is located and there is a number of folders. I just copy and pasted the things i wanted into the right folders.

There are many pros/cons to this unit so it's best to know before you buy:

PROS/CONS

1. I think it's a good price for the GB and I use it mainly for a video player/mp3 player and for that it is fine. The earbuds included are cheap and hurt my ears and in fact they just broke last night so use a different headphone (and if you know of a good brand let me know because i can't seem to find one). Also, as another reviewer said, you need a headphone plugged in to get the FM radio to work.

2. The FM radio is slightly hard to use (to find a station, scan - idk how to stop the scan lol) but once you go on a station you like you get decent reception AND you can record the song on the radio! I think this is a really cool function and I haven't seen it on anything else before.

3. Video looks good on the unit HOWEVER the disc that comes with it to "convert" your videos does not work at all. But, you can get youtube videos on it by going to [...] and picking "High Quality 3 GP 320x 240" this is the only video file that works on here. Before that i tried to put MP4s on it and they won't even play.

4. There is a voice recorder on it. I have only tried to use it once. For some odd reason the default is WMA when the player only plays MP3s *facepalm* so you will need to change it to record in MP3 first and you should be fine. Again, I didn't find this to be the easiest feature. When I tried to record, it basically didn't lol. But i only tried it once so i'm hoping whenever i try to again that it will work the way i want (and now i know it needs to be in mp3 format lol). Also I do have 2 files from my trial recording on my unit that does not appear when i plug it into my comp for some reason, i need to delete these items on the unit instead of through the comp.

5. The camera on this SUCKS. DO NOT BUY if you are looking for a camera. I have a 3 MP camera and I thought this would be an "upgrade" and it's not at all. There is no flash and because of that the pictures come out looking grainy unless you are in insane light (and whoever is lol).

In conclusion I would recommend this to a patient adult consumer because it can be trying at times to figure out how it works. HOWEVER, once you figure it out it is awesome. For such a cheap price I think it's a great price if you are looking for a video player/mp3 player and NOT A CAMERA

With the exeption of Flash, and uploading full length movies, this was everything i expected, i like the 4G MP3, I like the radio, i LOVE the video recorder, and the mini sd slot for my computer is conveniant, at 40 bucks it is an ok deal, oh yeah, the TV out ROCKS!!!

This clear hard plastic case is just what I was looking for to protect my new Sansa View. The only complaint I have is that the power/hold switch is a bit difficult to move given it's flush status with the side of the view and the new depth to get at it when the case is on. It would probably not be a problem for someone with fingernails though.

Got this unit to replace a Sansa e250. Delivery was prompt with packaging which insured product arrived free from damage. The memory, upgrades and other features far exceeded my expectations. The price for such performance almost feels too good to be true, but it's true. I would highly recommend this unit as fair competition for the [higher} priced iPod or other devices.

Arriving with equal satisfaction was the accessory kit (ie., car adapter, synch cable, neck strap, and plastic case). These, too, were true bargains at a great price.

I ordered this case and was elated when I saw it. It looked great and should have protected my Sansa View nicely. The problem came when it wouldn't latch completely and kept coming apart. I've replaced it with a soft skin. I would not purchase this type of case again.

There is no question about Eminem, and the way he has grown noblely into his music with his last single. Not afraid really set a strong tone for his Recovery record, and delivered very well. But for his latest single, Love The Way You Lie, he chooses to turn it into a collaboration with Rihanna. Sadly, the two of them don't have a lot of strong chemistry together. Rihanna has mainly put herself to the side, while Eminem steals the spotlight on the song. I really didn't feel the chemistry on the song. She could've also brought more of her voice into the song just like she could've when she teamed up on Run This Town with Kanye West and Jay-Z. While Eminem handles well, I just feel that Rihanna could've brought more of her A-Game into this collaboration. Don't really love the way this lies. Overall, stick with Eminem's Not Afraid alone.

That's how it is with most pop songs these days.

This one, however, is even more annoying than others I've heard lately on the radio, since the originality doesn't amount to ANYTHING, let alone something remotely interesting to listen to. Lines like "I'm wearin' all my favorite brands" and "I came to move/get out the way of me and my crew/I'm in the club and I'm gonna do/just what the f--- I came here to do" just make me roll my eyes.

I thought it would be catchy and mindless (and fun to listen to for a few weeks), but it's just pointless.

This song will probably be a huge hit this summer and possibly the rest of the year; it has a really good hook, and even though it sounds like a stereotypical pop song, which most songs do nowadays, it's still a good song that follows up well on Cruz's "Break Your Heart", which was amazing. Overall a good song, but if you don't like pop songs that much or you didn't enjoy Cruz's last song, you might want to keep away. I personally bought it, because I cannot stop listening to it.

This girl has a *BEAUTIFUL* voice which is a pleasure to listen to. The music is only slightly country sounding (more like country pop), and doesn't have the twang that I expected. The instruments are more like an afterthought, and her voice is the focal point. For people who like the original version, this may not be for you. I'm not a big fan of the original version, and she just makes it sound absolutely amazing. If you appreciate a beautiful voice and a hushed, calming sound, you'll love this!

It's incredibly brave for anyone to cover a song that can cause a listener to vividly recall the original and any residual emotion towards the original. This version by Sara Darling will not inspire you to forget the original, in fact Darling follows the original vocals almost note for note. What is lacking is the emotion that Bono conveyed. If only Ms. Darling took a cue from the haunting steel guitar that runs through the song.
