The Toyota Alphard is a luxury MPV produced by the Japanese automaker Toyota since 2002. It is available as a seven or eight-seater with 2.4 and 3.0-litre gasoline engines in 3 different model lines - Alphard G, Alphard V and Alphard Hybrid. The Alphard is primarily made for the Japanese market, but is also sold in Indonesia, Hong Kong, Bangladesh, Singapore, Thailand,[2] and Malaysia. The vehicle was named after the Alphard, the brightest star in the constellation Hydra.

Toyota states its "E-Four electric 4WD system that regulates a rear-mounted, rear-wheel-propelling electric motor and coordinates electric power distribution to all four wheels. An ECB (Electrically Controlled Brake system) provides efficient wheel-by-wheel brake control."

The full-size Alphard Hybrid MPV qualifies as an Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle (ULEV), achieving levels 75% lower emissions than the Japanese government's 2000 benchmark. The 2.4-litre gasoline engine has been developed specifically for use in Toyota's hybrid systems and features a high-expansion ratio cycle that raises efficiency and reduces friction.

In 2006, a Royal Lounge Alphard was introduced. It is a luxurious, four-seat version of the Alphard. Its traditional competitor from Nissan is the Elgrand.

Models

KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysian police has bought 25 high-powered Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution cars to catch criminals and speed hogs.

The cars, worth several millions of ringgit, would be fitted with safety gadgets and would sport the looks of police patrol cars.

Sources said the police had already taken possession and were testing the cars before sending them to the Road Transport Department for registration and approval.
“The cars are to be used in high-speed car chase, especially in cases of carjacking, kidnapping and hijacking.

“The speed of the cars would enable the police to catch up with criminals who often used modified turbo charged cars to escape,” they said.

Several police personnel have been sent to undergo intensive driving classes to ensure they are able to handle the super charged cars, they added.

The cars, they said, would also be used by the highway patrol unit to monitor speed hogs or illegal racers

Malaysian automaker Proton will unveil a hybrid concept vehicle at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show that was created in cooperation with its British subsidiary, Lotus Engineering, and Italdesign Giugiaro. The car will be displayed on the Italdesign stand.

Lotus is providing the hybrid drivetrain technology, while Giugiaro handled the styling on the four-passenger five-door hatchback, which aims to create the interior space of a large family sedan with the exterior dimensions of a city car.

The Lotus series hybrid system is built around the company's 1.2-liter three-cylinder "range extender" engine that was unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show last fall. The engine does not drive the wheels but is used exclusively to recharge the battery and provide power for the electric drive motors.

Italdesign said the aim of its vehicle design was to "optimize the available onboard space and ergonomics."

The Chery Tiggo 6 concept SUV (above) was unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show in 2006 seems to have had an engine transplant with it getting a…. wait for it…… Euro 5 rated engine.

The updated Tiggo 6, which boasts a more friendlier looking exterior, relying less on the RAV 4 looks which seem to have inspired the original Tiggo 5 to a certain degree, apperently the design was done by the Italian design master Bertone which gave it this chunk of Italian styling. Engine wise, the Tiggo 6 will come with a much better choice than its predecessor which relied on Mitsubishi engines rather than Cherys own stock. The Tiggo 6 will come with either a 3.0 V6, 2.0TCI or a 1.9TDI.

The new Tiggo 6 will set you back 140,000rmb to 200,000rmb – no news on 4×4 or 2×4 versions yet, but we presume that Chery will make them.

Government safety officials and Toyota engineers in Japan are testing the 2010 Lexus GX 460 to try to replicate Consumer Reports' findings, after the magazine warned shoppers not to buy the SUV because handling problems could present a rollover risk.

Toyota hopes to determine the cause as soon as possible, but spokesman Joe Tetherow said Wednesday he is not sure how long that will take.

"They understand that time is of the essence to get this resolved quickly but correctly," he said.

He was not sure if a recall would be issued, but said engineers are working to correct the problem so Consumer Reports can retest the GX 460 and give it a satisfactory rating.

Toyota said Tuesday it had asked dealers to temporarily suspend sales of the GX 460 while it conducts the tests. About 6,000 GX 460s from the 2010 model year have been sold since they went on sale in late December, and an estimated 1,600 of the SUVs are at dealerships.

The carmaker issued the temporary "stop sale" within hours after the popular consumer magazine raised the handling problem. It reflects Toyota's attempt to respond more quickly to safety concerns after being castigated by the federal government for dragging its feet on recalls to address faulty gas pedals.

Further blow to safety reputation

The decision to stop selling the SUV adds another stain to Toyota's safety reputation following the recall of more than eight million cars and trucks worldwide over gas pedals that are too slow to retract or can become stuck under floor mats. Toyota faces a $16.4 million US fine from the U.S. Transportation Department and has until April 19 to decide whether to contest the penalty.

The GX 460 is not covered by the accelerator pedal recalls.

Consumer Reports is closely read by many car buyers before choosing a new car or truck and has raised red flags over Toyotas previously. In January, the magazine pulled its "recommended" rating on eight vehicles recalled by the automaker due to faulty gas pedals.

In this case, Consumer Reports said the Lexus problem occurred during tests on its track. In a standard test, the driver approached a turn unusually fast, then released the accelerator pedal to simulate the response of an alarmed driver. This caused the rear of the vehicle to slide outward.

Under normal circumstances, the electronic stability control should quickly correct the loss of control and keep the SUV on its intended path. But with the GX 460, the stability control took too long to adjust, which could cause a rollover accident if one of the sliding wheels were to strike the curb or another obstacle, said Gabriel Shenhar, the Consumer Reports senior auto test engineer, one of four testers who experienced the problem.

The magazine said it is not aware of any reports of the GX 460 rolling over. It tested two separate vehicles, both of which experienced the problem, but neither rolled over.

U.S. authorities testing GX 460

Julia Piscitelli, a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration spokeswoman, said in a statement the agency was testing the GX 460 to ensure it complies with federal safety standards on electronic stability control and to understand how Consumer Reports reached its conclusions.

"It is our belief that [electronic stability control] should prevent the kind of fishtail event described in CU 's tests," Piscitelli said.

The magazine's warning label on the model will remain until Toyota addresses the handling issue with the seven-seat SUV.

Tetherow said Toyota is looking at the GX 460's stability control software, among other possible causes.

Templin said in a statement he was "confident that the GX meets our high safety standards" and said Toyota's engineering teams were testing the GX using Consumer Reports' specific parameters.

The GX 460, which starts at about $68,500, is built on the same platform as the Toyota 4Runner. However, Consumer Reports said the handling problem did not occur during similar tests on the 4Runner. According to Toyota's website, both vehicles are about 1.8 metres tall, but the GX 460 is about eight centimetres taller.

Consumer Reports said the last vehicle to receive such a safety warning was the 2001 Mitsubishi Montero Limited, a large SUV. In that case, testers said, the wheels lifted off the road during standard avoidance-manoeuvre tests, which also posed a rollover risk.

March Car Sales Up 56 Percent in China

SHANGHAI, China — China's auto sales accelerated 56 percent to a three-month high in March, a jump that some auto dealers are attributing to discounting.

A total of 1.73 million vehicles were sold in China last month, with passenger cars surging 63 percent to 1.26 million units and commercial vehicles climbing 75 percent to 470,200 units, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

First-quarter sales revved up 76 percent to 3.52 million units, the association said.

CAAM expects the domestic auto market to grow 15 percent this year.

But some dealers said the number of visitors to showrooms has started to reverse since March and new orders have declined, prompting them to offer price discounts to spur demand.

Analysts expect the growth in autos to slow this year as smaller tax incentives may weaken demand.

A report by CAAM showed sales of passenger vehicles with capacity of 1.6 liters or less accounted for 69 percent of the total passenger-car segment, 3 percentage points lower from a month earlier.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 debut at New York International Auto Show

STUTTGART, Germany — Mercedes-Benz has taken the wraps off a wild new racetrack version of the SLS AMG as part of the celebration commemorating its victory in the 1952 Carrera Panamericana with a modified version of the original Gullwing — the 300 SL.

Set to make its public debut next week at the 2010 New York Auto Show, the dramatically styled SLS AMG GT3 has been conceived to return Mercedes-Benz to top-flight sports car competition and will be sold to selected customers at an as-yet-unspecified price following a homologation process expected to be completed later this year.

The GT3 has been developed in cooperation between Mercedes-Benz's AMG division and HWA, a company headed up by one of the founders of AMG (Hans Werner Aufrecht) that oversees the German carmaker's DTM (German Touring Car) race operations. The new car retains the visual flavor of the road-going SLS AMG but has been extensively reworked in line with the FIA's latest GT3 regulations.

Among the changes is a heavily massaged body enhanced with a race-grade aerodynamics package developed in Mercedes-Benz's own wind tunnel in Stuttgart, Germany. Up front, it is characterized by a deep apron with a full-width cooling duct and prominent splitter element, as well as additional vanes on the front corners that can be adjusted to vary the downforce acting on the front axle.

The long hood has been modified with a large central aperture not included on the road-going SLS. It is supported by sizable vents in the front wheel arches that are used to further dissipate heat from the engine bay and front brakes. Deeper and more purposeful-looking side sills with integrated cooling ducts are also fitted underneath the signature gullwing doors to channel air to the rear brakes and SLS AMG GT3's gearbox — the latter mounted up back in a transaxle layout as in the regular SLS AMG.

The front and rear fenders have been widened to accommodate larger tires than the new Mercedes-Benz's standard 19-inch (front) and 20-inch (rear) hoops. With a width of 78.3 inches, the racecar is nearly 2 inches wider than the standard SLS AMG. The fuel filler has also been relocated to the B-pillar in close proximity to the 31.7-gallon tank, which is located behind the driver.

The rear of the SLS AMG GT3 is dominated by an adjustable wing attached to the trunk lid as well as a large diffuser that sits underneath a modified rear apron boasting two further vents to dissipate heat from the rear brakes, gearbox and exhaust, as well as a pair of enormous trapezoidal-shaped tailpipes.

Powering Mercedes-Benz's latest racecar is a reworked version of the standard SLS AMG's 6.2-liter V8 engine. The dry-sump unit sends drive to the rear wheels via a sequential six-speed race transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddles and a locking differential.

No power or torque figures for the new car have been revealed. They will be determined by the FIA according to its newly announced "Balance of Performance" principle. This is intended to ensure the performance of all cars taking part in international GT3 racing is of a similar level. The classification process, during which the curb weight is also determined, will be completed in 2010.

Mercedes-Benz says the SLS AMG GT3 will be significantly lighter than the 3,571-pound street SLS AMG. Weight-saving measures include a stripped-out interior, carbon-fiber body shell and polycarbonate windows. To ensure the gullwing doors open in a rollover, Mercedes-Benz uses pyrotechnic elements within the hinges mounted within the roof.
