It's a miniature Schnauzer that was born on 10 September 2008. She's Kaffee....

Look at her! isn't she cute? (brother got her picture in advance from the breeder)

As she still need to be taken good care by the breeder and her mom before passing over to the new owner, so my brother and girlfriend are extremely excited and looking forward the day to welcome Kaffee in next month. Haha...it's just like how a mother-to-be or father-to-be waiting for a new born eh...:p

I'm just wondering if she will be like her daddy or mommy one day when she grow up? Let's look at the video clip for the sophisticated features of this phone.

Wow, if the technology is available in reality, it will definitely come with a boom in the market. Always remember "Dream of Today will be Reality of Tomorrow"...

Design concept

“Form follows you”
A personal mobile communication device which lets you be free and fun. It is light, simple and carefree. You can change its form according to your needs during the day.

Technologies that are used

It uses liquid battery, speech recognition, flexible touch screen, touch sensitive body cover which lets it understand and adjust to the environment. It has a simple programmable body mechanism so that it changes forms in different situations.

The functionality of design

You dont have to carry it in your pocket or on your wrist. You can carry it anywhere, in anyform. You can roll it, bend it, put on your clothes like a clip. It also makes some form changes that makes it more ergonomical: i.e. when you want to talk on the phone, the body form turns into the form of the good old telephone. You can personalize these forms and record them. So it fits you the best in the way that you have chosen. The functions that it has also create a feeling of electronical pet, as it senses your moves, understand what you want, respond you in the best way. It learns you, to fit you better. Also e-motions lets you send forms to the other 888 users. It could be the shape of a heart or a small dance. This way you can talk without words.

Source: http://www.nokia888.com/

Mamma Mia! Made Me Laugh and Sob...

I have heard about the goods and imperfections of the movie after the official launched of the movie in the States in July, yet I'm still so excited waiting for the day to come, ie yesterday. We went a bit earlier than the ticket collection time to fill our stomach at PastaMania, half way enjoying our pasta and pizza set, there were a huge group of Penangites (bloggers) queuing for tickets and entrance.

Ok, we were done with the yummy meal and happily go getting our tickets. Ermm...why the tickets look so different from those of KL-ites? Anyway, don't care much as it's the movie that does matter! lol. Thanks to Nuffnang for the tickets.

Well, I didn't managed to take any snaps on the spot due to unforeseen battery flat of my camera. So, if you want to check out more of the pictures, visit Wenzi's blog which I spotted in Innit - where Nuffnangites share their interesting posts.

Ok, now comes to the movie part!

Overall, Mamma Mia! The Movie is fun and happy, the music's terrific and the cast is appealing. Though I haven't watch the musical myself so pretty much cannot make any comparisons here.

I like the whole point of the movie, it's about the eagerness of a daughter who wants to know who's her real father, the love between two middle-aged man and woman who have wasted their 20 over years before realising loves were deeply buried in each of their hearts ever since they separated, and it's about how they get support of friends and extended family, and finding happiness.

To be frank, just the fact that Pierce is in a musical comedy movie is good enough to get my curiosity aroused. But, I just felt weird about an action Hollywood star doing such a different role, it's a great attempt even though the singing is just OK. He's still as attractive as usual though. *wink*

Meryl Streep is a delight, and a wonderfully spontaneous comedian that bring up lots of singing and dancing. At one point, I was sobbing (not me alone as I heard others' sobbing too...*smile*) over the hardship that Meryl Streep went through, ie. being a single mother raised up her daughter all alone. Amanda Seyfried as the daughter is so lovely and sweet, love her wedding dress and hair-do...

Anyway, I think most ABBA's and Mamma Mia's fan would not want to miss this!

P/S: It seems mostly guys doesn't enjoy this musical comedy movie as much as ladys do? My husband was a bit bored I can tell...lol

Mamma Mia! The Movie

Since the movie of Mamma Mia! is around the corner, I'm so excited and guess most of those who have watched the stage musical would want to know how'll it be transforming from the stage to the film. I was a bit regret that hubby and myself didn't have time to watch the musical during our visit to London last May 2008.

Well, all I managed was to snap down this photo while walking on Coventry Street. Still remember it was a weekend and the street are busy with traffic vehicles and people all around.

The summer show of Mamma Mia! in the States received a lot of applause and good reviews, it get so hot now and had inevitably brought out the nostalgia of those elderly at my parents' age, as the musical was based on the songs of successful pop group ABBA (active between 1972 and 1982).

I like that song when I first listened from a TV musical show during my childhood, can you imagine the rhythm of the ABBA's Mamma Mia! is humming in my ears while I write this post? Nah..it couldn't be my ear infection effect...lol...If you want to have a taste of it again, let's watch the clip below:

So how? Nice isn't it? So what's next then?...of course to check out the movie...to enjoy the nice story line, to witness the talented actor, Pierce Brosnan and more...if only Nuffnang is kind enough to give me the 2 free tickets to watch the Premiere of Mamma Mia! The Movie on 22nd September? *wink*

2008 Olympic Games Mascot - Fuwa

It's Olympic season now, after the spectacular opening ceremony and that the games are on their way, I've almost forgot to post about the souvenirs that hubby got from Dongguan trip few weeks ago.

Initially I thought it might be quite easy to get these Olympic games mascot souvenirs anywhere in China, as Beijing being the host of the game this year. Indeed, hubby didn't spot any of them in Dongguan and Shenzen. He finally found it in Hong Kong International Airport just before departed back to Penang Airport. The prices (in HKD) had been marked up a bit higher than the original RMB yuan, but I think worthwhile as they're the Beijing 2008 Official Licensed Products.

This is the 3cm PVC Fuwa Pendant Set that's nicely packed with the box looks like the Five Olympic Rings. Each Fuwa (Olympic mascot) also embody the natural characteristics of four of China's most popular animals. I couldn't believe what I saw!

It was like 1pm and after sitting slack-jawed for hours watching the amazing Opening Ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics, I was still surrounded by the chronicle even after switching off the TV.

Both directors of the art performance, Zhang Yimou and Zhang Jigang did a good job presented the spectacular events. It was a blend of the historic Chinese culture and the modern vibrancy of the hi-tech world. The idea of the giant firework foot prints was great, so did the scroll painting that portrayed the ancient chinese cultures, inventions, people and the performance on it. There were many highlights when the scroll painting slowly stretched out. I couldn't imagine how they have the LED images shown on the scroll painting which can be stretched till 147 meters long.

Below are a few fantastic snaps taken by the professional photographers throughout the ceremony (photo source: http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2008/08/2008_olympics_opening_ceremony.html)

The Olympic rings are illuminated during the Opening Ceremony for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. That's why, Chinese couples are keen to tie the knot on this very auspicious date - 08.08.2008. It's in fact more than just a date, it marks both the opening of the Olympics 2008, as well as the lucky day for marriage with triple eights in the date.

Look at these 208 couples officially married in a group today at Taiyuan, China - cheering and blessing for both their wedding as well counting down for the Olympic Games Opening ceremony....

Fun, isn't it?

My Ear Infection Slowly Recovering...

After all those pain and hassles that I went through last week, and that I'm back at home. There are still lots of thing I need to take note of:

My diet - to consume less or none of shrimp, octopus or squid
Tell you something, I had already consumed a bit of shrimp the next day I came back because I forgot to check with doctor on my diet, I think as he said consume "less" means can still eat, so hopeful alright...*shhhh* don't tell the doctor...haha.....

Not to scratch or dig my ear even it's in itchy condition. Luckily I was allowed to c lean the outer part of my ear but not into the canal.

Finally, my hearing seems better these few days, no more plugged or muffled and the echoing had gone. Thank goodness!

I had my revisit to the doctor yesterday, he did some toileting for me as usual with the microscoped suction device. This time, he managed to clear a bit of the debris inside my canal. But it seems the treatment will take longer as my infected ear drum, though had improvement, but still need further ear drop theraphy to 100% clear off. I asked him when can I fully recovered, he cant give an absolute answer because it all depends on individual and most of the time this kind (ear drum) infection need longer treatment period.

No additional medicine given by the doctor, all I need is to continue applying the otic ear drop with lesser dose per day, while finishing off the remaining 3 antibiotic tablets. That's it. Oh, of course need the next appointmen with him, hopefully it all cleared by then *day dreaming*

So, friends, don't ever attempt to dig your ears with ear digger or pouring water inside your ears when you need to get rid of the water inside, ok?

Why She Cut Your Watch?

I am feeling moody since last night, just thought of writing something cheerful now when I recalled a funny scene just before I was discharged the other day.

It was Wednesday evening when my ward neighbour, WC (she just had the surgery done on her nose due to sinusitis) and myself are packing up and getting ready for discharge, her mom and the little nephew (Daniel) came to pick her up. He's a 4-years-old cute little boy who like to ask "Why?"...That's the word came out of his mouth often...he's such a wonder boy...so cute!

The nurse came in and started to remove the injection tube on WC's hand and then cut off her name tag on her wrist. Noticing the nurse's actions, Daniel raised his voice and asked curiously: "EeEe, why she cut your watch?". The whole ward was full of laughter after that...I would be choking if I was drinking at that moment, luckily I didn't...haha

WC shoke her head and said: "No lah, that's not watch. It's the name tag"
Daniel asked again: "Why cut the name tag?"
WC replied: "Because EeEe can go home now"
Daniel : "Yay, EeEe go home......"
Daniel saw WC carried along the flower basket given by her visitors: "EeEe, why you take the flower?"
WC : "Because the flower is beautiful mah"

WC asked him to say goodbye to me while I'm waiting for hubby to fetch me. He acted shy and finally said "Goodbye, aunty"...

After he left, I recalled a few conversations when he first came the day before:

Daniel : EeEe, why you stay in the hopistal? (apparently, he wanted to say "hospital")
WC : Because EeEe is sick loh
Daniel : EeEe, why your nose like this? (WC's nose was covered by the cotton patch after the surgery)
WC : Doctor cut EeEe's nose so that EeEe can breath properly...
Daniel : Cut ar, pain pain...

WC asked, "What did you learn at nursery today?". He immediately stood on the chair and said:

"Hickory, dickory, dock.
The mouse ran up the clock.
The clock struck one, the mouse ran down.
Hickory, dickory dock."

He saw me watching and he stopped, looked shy.

Oh boy, he had cheer up our days in the boring ward!

I Want My Hearing Back!

It was a bad week for me since last week, not mainly because of hubby leaving for business trip to Dongguan, China but because of my ear infection which was beyond my expectation.

One morning I woke up with my left ear blocking due to some inner discharge. You know, it was so irritating losing the normal hearing capability on one side of the ear. Initially, I thought that was the water that get into my ear when shower. But few days went by and it's still retaining there. So annoying with the muffled hearing and that "ewwwww....ewwww.....ewwww...." non-stop echoing inside my ear was the worse. I just hope the water will evaporate itself perhaps few days later, but it didn't. Didn't had enough sleep for few days then...

So, I did something stupid, I know I shouldn't have done all these but just can't resisted to get rid of this frustration, ie. Tilt my head to the right, stretch my left ear a little and pour some water into it and tilt down-ward with continue stretching attempting to dump all the water right back out, like what I used to do whenever water got into my ears after swimming (learnt that from my coach last time). Most of the time, that was a very useful step to get rid of the water inside my ears after swimming session, but no effect this time. Next, tried to absorb those water at the inner side of my ear canal with cotton-tipped applicator but failed, sounds stupid eh? haha...no choice, will simply try anything when being cornered. What I get after all those <del>cleverly done</del> nonsense? Ear pain for days!!! (According to specialist after I consulted him on the coming Monday, these might be the root cause of the ear fungal infection, initially the ear discharge itself was already a sign of infection but I had made things worse with those unnecessary steps)

The slight pain inside my ear canal started on Friday (25th July) but I ignored hoping for self-receovery as I had experienced this kind of pain before and it had naturally resolved quite soon. The pain became more severe on Saturday night, just like needles poking in my ear and could not made myself into sound sleep that night. The next morning, I went to GP with the preparation of getting my ear clean up, but he referred me to the specialist instead. Reason being, the solid fluid covered up my canal and he cannot see my ear drum, one thing he was assured: ear infection which need specialist treatment. Got the letter and went back home to wait for tomorrow as specialist only attend to emergency case on Sunday. How I wish it was a Monday!! I basically did not sleep the whole night due to the stronger echoing and the painnnnn.....erkkk, the pain killer that GP gave me didn't work at all...ended up with fever! Took paracetamol to reduce the fever then.

The next morning, I went to Lam Wah Ee very early to register for consultation. Dr. Ng has a lot of patients that it was almost noon when comes my turn. The first thing he said when he inspected my ears was: "you have fungal infection, did you dig your ear?", so I admitted. "Well, most infection cases caused by that". He attempted to clear out the fungus that had almost blocked my canal so as to have a proper treatment, but just half way through the suction I felt very giddy and my canal started to bleed. Dr. Ng had to put for admission to the hospital for further treatment then. He'll give me antibiotics and otic drop to apply and monitor the progress then, and of course the pain relief. He will give another aural suction to clear all those debris, if still can't clear most of it, it has to be done under a general anaesthetic then. Oh well, luckily I already packed up my baggage with cloths the night before as I had the strong feeling that my ear infection is not just something easy to dealt with, bear in mind of that severe pain.

I woke up many times that night when nurses came in and out to measure my BP, temperature and to give me injection of antibiotics, pain relief...bla bla....which I don't really know what was the third injection for. The next day, the pain has gone but the echoing was still strong. Dr. gave me a brief analysis of my condition, there was 15% of hearing loss on my left ear. Oh my goodness, I can't imagine that! Noted my worries, he said it was temporarily due to the blockage at my canal with those otic drop, once my infection is dealt with my hearing will recover.

On Tuesday noon, luckily the suction had removed the major blockage which in one point quite painful (tears dropped), but it was a huge relief after that. Even though it bleed again but the echoing had gone! Now only Dr. sees the infection on my ear drum that can be treated by the otic drop and antibiotic. Went through another hearing assessment and yet another day in the ward with further treatment.

Finally, I was discharged yesterday after the toileting of my ear. It was always good being at home. Even though haven't online for many days, I didn't have the eager to do so. Still feel tired and drowsy because of the medications, only managed to write the post today, which was 2 days after I was back.

I'm now on medication, the antibiotic is a must, another two are for allergies and pain relief (if necessary). Otic drop need to be applied twice a day. Hoping to get back my original hearing soon, got to see the progress in next appointment then.

Hong Kong Seasoned Dried Scallop

I haven't been to Hong Kong even though some of my uni-mate were Hongkies, have been told numerous time about the famous yum cha and dim sum and longing for that day to come, hopeful sometimes close (day-dreaming...) *lol*

Anyway, back to topic, it happened that Amelia went to Hong Kong for a week's trip and guess what she bought us this round? ...think...think...no, have no idea? It's some Hong Kong seasoned dried scallop (炭烧元贝) & the Japanese Kusa Mochi /Rice Cake Cookie (日式草饼/麻糬).

As we all know Hong Kong has a special affinity for anything from the sea. Some of the most expensive (and thus appreciated) seafood product is dried shark's fins, scallops, abalone, and sea cucumbers - all of which are prized for their unusual texture. Thus, Amelia had been aiming for those dried seafood products while enjoying her sight-seeing there. When being told about the dried scallop, I've been thinking of its adductor muscle which we normally eat, ie the typical short cylinder-shaped ones. However, this is in fact the whole scallop that we seldom see in country. Or, perhaps it's just my ignorant? *wink*

The scallop is really yummy, it was just like chewing on a rubber, but a tasty sweet and salty <del>rubber</del> scallop. The magic was the moment you chew on it slowly then the smell and essence spilt into your mouth. Once finished, the aroma is still in your mouth just like after you ate cuttlefish. Some people dislike that taste...but not me!

The Japanese Kusa Mochi is made by the glutimous rice pounded into paste and was stuffed with the sweetened paste of blacksaseme, purple rice, green tea and chestnut, out of which I like green tea favour the most. What a good treat after heavy meal!

Some Great Quotes...

These are a few great quotes (that I'm unsure of the creators) I've received in my inbox few days back, from a friend. I've to admit that to some extent, certain quotes just fit my situations well while others triggered different perceptions of mine. Well, it might not always be right anyway, just take as much as you agree and think wise!

How far do you agree on those quotes??

Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.

Marry a man/woman you love to talk to. As you get older, their conversational skills will be as important as any other.

Don't believe all you hear, spend all you have or sleep all you want.

When you say, 'I love you,' mean it.

When you say, 'I'm sorry,' look the person in the eye.

Be engaged at least six months before you get married.

Believe in love at first sight.

Never laugh at anyone's dreams. What I like most about the day is the yummy meat dumpling (zongzi) that I've been longing. I mean we won't purposely make such dumpling on ordinary days due to the lengthy and complicated preparation steps. Indeed, I can't actually make a dumpling with proper pyramid shape as shown below.

Hubby and myself went back hometown yesterday while finding mom-in-law was almost done with the dumpling wrapping. Hubby's cousin sister was there too, helped up with the wrapping. Very soon, mom-in-law was busy placing those dumpling into the pressure cooker for cooking/steaming by batch. Emmm, those dumpling really smells good after cooked.

We had dumplings as breakfast this morning and when I untie the dumpling from the glossy bamboo leaves wrapper, the sweet-smelling and steam rising intricately as it flops onto the plate, memories also spill out from the package. I missed late grandma's dumpling very much and I think we would never have the chance for the same taste anymore. Mom-in-law's dumplings are great this year with more ingredients added...yummy! Of course, I do missed mom's dumpling as well, of which she learnt from my late grandma if not mistaken.

My mom made heavenly dumpling as well, but she used to substitute the oily meat with the lean meat instead. She would also use less salted duck eggs in order to cut down the cholesterol level. However, dad and brothers like dumplings with traditional ingredients, 3-layered meat and salted duck eggs are the must.

Oups! We had better drink some tea to neautralise some oil in our body...

Sayonara (Good Bye), UK!

Wow, the vacation went fast. My final day in Gunwharf Quays started off with a bit of end-of-vacation blue (I guess only me having such a feeling as hubby still need to work throughout the stay there, nothing so called 'relaxing' applied to him though).

As usual, had our breakfast and hubby went off to work. I've made up my mind to go round Gunwharf Quays before putting a dot on my vacation, with my camera of course.

Went down to the lobby and made an exit, I saw many nice Jaguars on display on the plaza with the badge of 'Entente Cordiale Britanny' on each one. First time ever seen so many Jaguars...

Oh yeah, it was in conjunction of the 14th year of the annual Jaguar tour travels to the Brittany region of France this year. As such you have the opportunity to check-in for the 'Entente' at which time you will receive all the important route instruction books, name badges and goody bags. Then, the group will board the Brittany Ferries overnight sailing to St. Malo, France on early evening. You will be able to witness the display and parade of historic Jaguars in Vannes, then to St. Nazaire and La Roche-Bernard and last but not least, to Honfleur and the group will be returning from Caen to Portsmouth after the 7 days tour.

More Jaguar...

Went further down to the Central Square and see what they have! The Italian Food Market is on... all yummy Italian food on sale...

The police ship on patrol

Overall, it was quite a relaxing and wonderful vacation I have ever had, no rushing like taking normal tours, all based on our own schedule and no hassle and bassle of waiting for others etc. If given the chance, I would definitely come back England cause there are still lots of places waiting for me to explore, of course have to consider our pocket as well...

On My Way to Commercial Road

What's all about Commercial Road? Well, it's one of the main shopping centres in Portsmouth where many of the major store names can be found. This area has all the type of shops that you would expect in a city centre location, boutiques, music, books, department stores, sports, catalogue shops, photographic, banks, building societies and food, etc. The northern end of Commercial Road is regularly used by market traders selling a wide variety of different goods from their stalls. So, it's considered the shopping haven for students of University of Portsmouth, with a walking distance from the university campus.

Even though it's easily accessible via bus or train, I, however decided to walk there on this lovely morning. The weather is just right for strolling!

Along Queens Street not far after the Historic Dockyard entrancd, there are some display of the old anchors

Where had all the leaves gone?

HMS Nelson's Naval Chaplaincy

In Victoria Park - photo taken on 3rd May during our first visit to the park, when tulips were blooming but I've forgotten to take a closer shot. Didn't expect that within 2 weeks time the tulips flower bed is now emptied and planted with other flower specimen instead. Arkk....miss those lovely tulips!

Roses had replaced most of the flower beds in Victoria Park at mid May

Left : Peugeot wandering on along the path of the park
Right : The enclosed area at the centre of the park containing an aviary with peacocks, parrots and other exotic birds. An adjacent area contains small mammals such as rabbits and guinea pigs which children enjoy feeding.

At Commercial Road....went shopping after this!

At Guildhall Square, you can see Queen Victoria's memorial standing in front of the building of Civic offices (left) facing the Guildhall (right)

Part of the University of Portsmouth

Historic Dockyard @ Portsmouth

Just a quarter-mile from Gunwharf Quays, I stroll over the Flagship Historic Dockyard today, while hubby went for work.

The dock was commissioned in 1495 by order of Henry VII. Ships on display include Nelson's famous flagship HMS Victory, HMS Warrior, The Mary Rose and current operational warships.

HMS Warrior 1860

HMS Victory 1765 with over 100 canons on board

The statue of William IV in the Porter's Garden

Gunwharf Quays

I believe those staying in South England would know this port town Gunwharf Quays, in Portsmouth Hampshire. Being part of the larger overall redevelopment of the waterfront at Portsmouth and Gosport, Gunwharf Quays is landscaped into a historic setting with the Historic Dockyard and Old Portsmouth only a few minutes walk away, It's where the old and the new come together.

Over here, people can shop at over 95 designer outlets, eat at one of 20 cosmopolitan bars & restaurants, be entertained at the 14-screen vue cinema, bowl at the 26-lane Bowlplex, dance the night away at the clubs. It's just a minute or two from where we stay, New Express by Holiday Inn (as below).

Bottom right : The Penthouse apartment in The Crescent Building where those staying here experience the high life at Gunwharf Quays

Gunwharf Quays offers a unique blend of outlet shopping, leisure and entertainment on a stunning waterfront location. Now only I know why hubby's company had arranged for us to stay in Gunwharf Quays rather than somewhere closer to Havant but not so happening.

The pedestrian entrance leading to the shopping avenues of Gunwharf Quays if you come from Portsmouth Harbour railway station and 'the Hard' bus interchange

The iconic 'Spinnaker Tower' has become Portsmouth’s most prominent landmark, stretching 170m into the sky, providing spectacular views of Portsmouth Harbour and the Solent.

The Tower's snapshots under blazing sun (left), during evening (middle) and on cold day (right)

More photos taken, the restaurants, shopping complexes and cinema...

This is where I've been hanging around these few days, the covered shopping avenues. It's a non-smoking area, thus I don't have to tell you how fresh the air around there *smile*

Vulcan building's north wing and central clock tower

HMS Marlborough figurehead (left) and the ships (right)

The ships

The sunset

The Spice Island Inn (a bar) over the other side

What a lovely ladies (washroom)...don't laugh! While watching the BBC breakfast news, we learnt that FA Cup will be on display at Spinnaker Tower from 3 - 7pm today, it's "Portsmouth's FA Cup day"!

I thought no harm have a look as I have no plan for today as yet. Furthermore, it's so close with just a 2 minutes walk from our hotel to the tower. Of course I brought along my camera as reminded by the broadcaster.

Left : This was what I saw when I arrived at the front of the Spinnaker tower shop

Right : Moved forward and made a left turn and ...oh dear, so many supporters from the South of England are here to see the cup that Pompey will be playing for on the coming Saturday 17 May 2008, as the clock counts down to the big Wembley final. The assistant told me it's going to be at least 45 minutes wait, hope I could bear with it. Of course, I'm willing to wait....as it's the only chance for me to be more close up to the Cup.

Left : I should not say that the queue made up by merely supporters from the South, but through to far flung corners over the globe. Many visitors like me are here...some brought along their little babies for the memorable snap, kids were dressed in their Portsmouth FA Cup shirts. Those guys standing in front of me even leaved their office earlier so that they can catch up with this event, it was approximately 4.15pm that moment.

Right: Thanks goodness! Spinny, the Tower's mascot entertained the crowds while we queued as it might be boring while waiting and don't forget, we were under the blazing sunshine for almost an hour...that have left a sunburn mark on my neck.

Finally it's my turn! First time ever in my life being so close to the FA Cup, what a gleaming legendary trophy!

I went for shopping after that and reached hotel around 6pm, switched on TV to watched the BBC news again after shower and there was a live broadcast about the FA Cup event at 6.30pm. In order not to disappoint the fans, they actually prolonged the display time to over 7pm due to the long queue. To my surprise the highlight was only at the last minutes, I could be featured on TV if I were there an hour later than I did!

Watch highlights from the FA Cup Day at the tower

Littlehampton by the Sea

Ta daa!... here we are at the Littlehampton! We took the train from Arundel to Littlehampton, to experience this beautiful seaside town with an upbeat air but a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere.

We strolled through the old arcade before headed for the riverside walk.

Top : Sat beside the Oyster Waymarkers that give visitors the opportunity to discover local seafood recipes, with the nice view of the riverside at the back.
Left : There were features that had attracted me when we reached the riverside, not only its shops and waterside restaurants - but also the swans! You can see them scattered around the riverside.
Right : Boats parking in front of the Boat Builders

"Reverse, go...go...go....ok, stop! That's good enough!.....", it drew my attention as that was the first time I saw how people moved the boat into the water from the Lifeboat and public slipway. Don't laugh but I feel amazed to see that, yet worried that the four-wheel drive might slipped into the river...haha, that's too much of concern as it was alright!

Oyster Pond - Boats are available for hire on this small boating lake near the amusement arcade. It was originally used to house local fishermen’s (predominantly shellfish) catches with a majority of oysters, hence the name Oyster Pond.

Left : One...two...three...swans lining up, so adorable!
Right : along the riverside walk

Of course, the place to be in Littlehampton on a sunny day like this is the seafront, which is a pleasant place to be as these contrasting views show. It's been the place where many families sun-bathing and have fun either on the seaside or the Harbour Park.

We took the bus back to Gunwarft Quays after witnessed the wonder of Littlehampton which is an award winning beach and end our tour for the week.

Arundel Castle

Highly recommended by hubby's colleague, today's itinerary is to cover the Arundel Castle locating in a small town call Arundel. Arundel is a market town and civil parish locates in West Sussex, the south of England.

It's about an hour plus train distance from Portsmouth, but due to the weekend service maintenance the train station had arranged for a railway replacement coach to Littlehampton station and then only we took a train to Arundel station. Hopped off the train, we can feel the quietness of the town and the refreshing air out there!

With just a short walk we reached Arundel town and these are the view of the Arundel Castle set high on the hill.

Walked cross the bridge and we were at the Lower Lodge entrance of the Arundel Castle, paid for the entrance tickets and we was given a map (right) like this for reference. As certain places in the Castle only open from 11am onwards and it's still early, so we've decided to stroll through the grounds first.

Left : The High Street lodge which is now closed for entrance, the only entrance and exit is at the Lower Lodge
Right : Reached the Castle Garden with Arundel Chatedral beside. There's construction work undergoing on the Earl's Garden locates beside this garden, didn't expect it to be reopened so soon which was 3 days later...

Lastest update: The Earl's Garden was opened by Prince of Wales on 14th May, 2008. Check out the article of Prince of Wales Opens the Earl's New Garden at Arundel Castle, West Sussex

Left : The curtain wall
Right : The castle gatehouse built around 1070

Left : Arundel Castle's south facade
Right : Arundel Castle's north-west facade taken from Fitzalan Chapel

Close up to the Castle

A grand Castle vs little boy and girl

It's time to go for the Keep exploration and the Castle tour, so we went into the Castle from the Duke Henry entrance (right) and this is the exterior view of the castle (left).

Left : mounting the battlement - the Castle Keep was built on top of the motte in about 1140
Right : a shot down from the base of the Keep

Left : Inside the Keep, now you see....
Right : Now you don't...in fact I've climbed to the top of the Keep, can you see me?

131 steps up to the platform of the Keep via the passageway is narrow and a long steep haul but worth every step. If you meet somebody going the opposite way you have to find one of the few spaces to duck into to allow him/her to pass. I heard sounds coming from the stair when I made a few steps up, so I'd rather make a reverse and waited for the family to come down to avoid the congestion. I then proceeded to the top after the passageway is cleared, frankly it's hard to move around the narrow spaces face to face.

From different angel of the Keep - see the view of the fortifications, the town, the walls, the intersection of old and new walls (bottom left), the inner courtyard (bottom middle) and etc.

On our way down from the Keep - it's quite dark and we could hardly see the steps so I've to grab on the side to support myself just in case any empty step made. The camera flash does help a lot in brightened the way. It's a long steep haul but worth every step, can't imagine how people with bigger figure managed to move around these narrow and spiral stone steps? surprise huh!

What's next then? The Castle tour of course! There is no photography or video allowed inside of the Castle so no photos to share beyond this point. Arundel Castle is a "working castle" where it is still family home to the 18th Duke and Duchess of Norfolk with their children. Visitors can tour the main castle building with more than 20 rooms and view the rich interiors of a stately home, including the dining room, the library, the armoury and the Baron's Hall. They have guests stay in many of the rooms on the weekends, as such there are still places to keep private.

I was so excited as a thousand years of history is waiting to be discovered. Passing by the state apartments and private living quarters, we witnessed many beautiful works of sculpture, painting, tapestry, and furniture. Indeed, the ceilings throughout are masterworks of intricate timber-work and vaulting. Not forgetting to share with you about the Grand Staircase, which is a great craftsmanship itself.

There's a room displaying Arundel's armory which contains weapons from the 15th century to the 18th century. Some of these weapons are almost 600 years old and are very rare.

Large portraits of every Duke of Norfolk are well displayed on the wall, including the portrait of the current Duke. There are also many candid snaps of the Duke and Duchess, their children and grandchildren - scattered between the ornate furniture in the main living area. There are many Norfolk's good picture collection including portraits by many famous artists. The personal possessions of Mary, Queen of Scots and a section of historical, religious and heraldry items from the Duke of Norfolk's collection are also on display.

Besides, the library with paneling and vaulting of dark mahogany is so gorgeous. Decorates by the old design carpet and the red plush curtains hanging on the arches, no doubt it's considered one of the finest examples of "Gothic rooms" in England. We had also witnessed the glorious bedrooms (named "The Victoria Rooms") which was refurbished, in anticipation of a 3-days visit of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert back in 1846. It's impossible to portray the beautiful fabrics and tapestries as well as the setting of the bedroom by words.

Overall the Castle tour is superb, and I can't stress how I love the feel of the Castle. When I asked hubby whether we can have the tour for second time (as though I've forgotten the admission fee), he just smile...haha! Frankly, I was a bit reluctant to leave the Castle until hubby reminded me about our next destination...Oh, well, we had better make a move!

A Day at Oxford - Part 3

It's time for us to return to Christ Church College for the dining hall that we missed out just now. Climbed up the stairs (we forgot to take a snap of it) leading to the dining hall, we saw many visitors waiting outside for their turn to go in as the previous batch were still inside.

So, we have a sit outside waiting for our turn. Soon we were in the queue like you see below, slowly navigated into the hall, making a round in and out after we have reflected and snapped enough, anyway that's the main purpose of paying for the entrance isn't it? *smile*

Left : Harry Porter fans will sure recognise this dining hall as it has been used as the dining hall in the film. Look at the long dining tables, looks grand!
Right : very proper dining table setting with romantic lights in the middle

Left : The walls are full of portraits of distinguished members of the college and of many prime ministers. I read somewhere that there is also portrait of Lewis Carroll, who was professor of mathematics in Oxford and also the author of "Alice in Wonderland". In one of the stained glass windows in the Dining Hall you are able to see some figures from the book/ film. We was busy snapping while the queue were moving quite fast so we missed his portrait and the mentioned figures of "Alice in Wonderland"
Right: At the edge of the dining hall which was closed for entrance

Left : Looks like the famous Bridge of Sighs in Venice, so this Hertford Bridge in New College Lane is also commonly referred as Bridge of Sighs.
Right : the narrow lane

Nice shot of the Bridge of Sighs (taken by Chin Ping)

Left : "Take One Picture", as the signboard in front of Ashmolean Museum per se I had one shot there...hehe
Right : Resting in the Ashmolean Museum, Chin Ping had a very quick snap of this one.

Left : On our way back to the bus station, the street full of people...
Right : "Thanks for your hospitality Yih Fang and Chin Ping!" we said and this is the last snap of us before leaving Oxford.

A Day at Oxford - Part 2

Take a break and had lunch @ ......emm, forgot the name of that restaurant, anyway, I enjoyed my Chicken Mayo Jacket Potato and so did hubby, with his Panini Thai Chicken. Yummy, good recommendation by Yih Fang and appreciate the treats that she insisted.

Ok, now that we already had our lunch and boosted our energy for further walks. We are at the Covered Market in central Oxford then. It is a historic market with permanent stalls and shops in a large covered structure. Felt so happy to be together sightseeing on this lovely day.

We met up with Yih Fang and Chin Ping at Oxford station, it was around 10:25am. Both looks great and as cheerful as always. A bit surprise that Yih Fang had picked up the UK accent so fast, haha, can't get use to that yet. She'll be bringing us around Oxford city. If you see nice pictures below that attracted you, most of the credit goes to Chin Ping who really is good in photography considering he learnt on his own.

The 13th-century tower, Carfax tower (taken by Chin Ping)

The Museum of Oxford

The War Memorial Garden we passed by before heading to Christ Church college, it was laid out in 1926 to commemorate college members who fell in the First World War.

Left : Just before the wall of Christ Church gate at St. Aldate's street, one of the largest colleges in the University of Oxford, and also the Cathedral Church for the Diocese of Oxford.
Right : The Meadow Building which is also the entrance to Christ Church compound

Left : Interior of the walk way
Right : The Christ Church college Tower

Left : Nice large tracery windows in the Christ Church Cathedral
Right : Peaceful Christ Church Cathedral

The whole facade of Tom Quad, the main quadrangle of Christ Church. With its charming fountain, is the largest courtyard in Oxford.

Left : Part of the Tom Quad with the Tom Tower at the middle
Right : Leaning on the wall of Tom Quad

Our main destination - the great Tudor Dining Hall is still closed for entry by the time we reached there, perhaps it was occupied for catering. So, we have decided to go for lunch and come back later.

Left : The exit
Right : Nice Lane

Forgot the name of these buildings, maybe are one of the colleges

Left : with Yih Fang
Right : The view of Magdalen College from Botanic Garden. Erm...there seemed to be places that we've missed out. Too bad, we have to bid good-bye to it today.

These are a few last-minutes snaps last night...just somewhere close to our hotel

Overseeing the County Hall and London Eye from our hotel room, it would be more perfect if not partially blocked by the constructions

Waterloo Underground Station, very close to where we stayed

London tube routes
