I'm glad that recently I was gifted by a family member her own vintage set of Churchill china from her dowry, otherwise I would be squirming with jealousy right now. I have loved them as long as I can remember, I will always cherish them.

Baby blue is one of those wonderful colours that need to be used in moderation. A little piece here, a little accessory there, and it's enough. Painting the walls with it hardly ever results in a cozy environment. It needs to be enveloped in warm whites, sweet pinks or bright yellows. It needs the softness of wood or the warmth of wicker. Only then the true fresh, breezy, summery qualities of this colour arise. That's how I like it.

I have always been into Thonet chairs, enamel and vintage looking floor tiles. I also find simple woven fabric rugs such as the one here perfect for summer homes.

Now that my patient anticipation for spring has finally come to fruition, my taste has gone back to what it was when this blog had first started; fresh, country style. Joyful rose prints, pinks, pastels, flowers and even colorful rugs to provide soft support for my -now that it's finally warm, bare- feet. Crisp sheets that smell like soap. Vignettes of fresh blooms. Slightly sweating when going for long walks outside and not complaining about the heat at all. These are the things that I'm into at the moment. I mean, look at that wallpaper above. How can anyone not fall in love with it?

Google Reader Alternatives

Google Reader'a Alternatifler

Since Google announced that they will be retiring Google Reader as of July 1, 2013, the internet has been abuzz seeking and suggesting alternatives. I never really used Google Reader's own page to read my feeds as I found it ugly despite its convenience. However, the apps I do depend on use my Google subscriptions to show my feeds, so of course I'm sad to see it go. Fortunately, RSS feed readers such as Feedly and Flipboard have announced they have got us covered and their service will continue to work even after Google Reader shuts down.

Here are two of my favorite Google Reader alternatives. I chose them because they are perfect for people who prefer mostly visual blogs, and because I have already been happily using them for quite a long while now. I'm not including Flipboard because it's iPhone/iPad and Android only and I haven't personally tried it yet. I'm also excluding The Old Reader because it's completely crippled by the suddenly increased demand and is rendered useless for who nows how long. Oh, and they don't offer an app.

Even if you are all set, I suggest you download a copy of your Reader data using Google Takeout. That way, if you start to feel unsatisfied about your choice of RSS reader after Google Reader is discontinued, you can still use that data to set up a different one.

Google, Reader'ı 1 Temmuz 2013'ten itibaren emekliye ayıracağını açıkladığından beri internet alternatif arayışları ve önerileri ile çalkalanıyor. Ben Google Reader'ın kendi sayfasının görüntüsünü sevmediğimden dolayı takip ettiğim blogları o sayfadan okumuyordum. If you are using a PC or a Mac, just go to feedly.com and get the plug-in for your browser. After that, all you need to do is sign in with your Google account and your subscriptions will be synced instantly. That's it, done! Just make sure you do this before Google Reader goes kaput. What I like about Feedly, apart from the speedy transition, is that it is beautiful and versatile. Whether you like to view your subscriptions in a list format or Pinterest-like stream of images, setting your preferences is a breeze. Another plus is that it's available as an app for your iPhone/iPad.

What I like about Bloglovin' is that not only is it easy to use and beautiful, but the ability to browse categories among top blogs or popular posts mean you can always discover new blogs to follow. It is also available for iPhone/iPad.

Here are some (iphone) photos of my current favorite items.

I am a stationery geek and own an abundance of pens, pencils and especially notebooks. I didn't even fight the urge to get these notebook labels and the pink writing pad with grids and a ruler. The Pentel Graphgear 1000 mechanical pencil is not new, but it is the best mechanical pencil ever made (trust me, I have tried many) and has such a perfect weight and balance. The Stabilo point 88 pens are another addiction and the colors are so beautiful. I bought turquoise and violet refills for my Lamy Safari pen, which is a delight to use.

The wooden rulers were less that $1 each so I bought four, for no other reason than greed. The red hole puncher was bought despite the fact that I haven't punched a hole in years. The train of wooden letters spell my name. I tracked down a copy of "The Best Bedtime Stories", collected by Jella Lepman and illustrated by Hansjörg Schmitthenner. It's from the 50s and consists of the combination of some of the dearest and creepiest stories ever written. I grew up with the Turkish version (illustrated by Günther Strupp) of the book that was a childhood gift to my mother from my grandma. Roald Dahl's "The Gremlins" is a new copy. Although the story was originally printed in 1943 and out of print, it was reprinted -faithful to the original- in 2006 in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the United States Air Force.

Bazılarınızın "Allah Rahatlık Versin" ismiyle tanıdığı, yazılmış belki de en sevimli ve en ürkünç çocuk hikayelerinin birleşiminden oluşan efsanevi kitabın İngilizce versiyonu. Bendeki Türkçe basımını annem çocukken ona anneannem hediye etmiş, ben de bu kitapla büyüdüm. Bizdekini Günther Strupp resimlemiş, bence çok daha güzel. The February issue of Country Living UK has page after page of mesmerizingly beautiful narcissi. I find myself flipping through the magazine over and over again. These interior photos seem to be styled while keeping in mind that freshness of spring blooms and the yet continuing need for warmth. The dominant color is the sweetest shade of green.

This is the home of Stewart and Jane Devlin in Millbrook, Hudson Valley. They're Irish and English, respectively. This renovated 18th century house is so close to New York while providing the countryside lifestyle of their old country.

Stewart ve Jane Devlin'in Hudson Valley'de yer alan Millbrook'taki evlerindeyiz. Biri İrlandalı, diğeri İngiliz. 18. yüzyıldan kalma, yenilenmiş bu ev, New York'un yanıbaşında onlara anavatanlarının özlem duydukları kırsal yaşam tarzını sunuyor.

This is quite possibly the most realistic doll house I have ever seen. I wonder if it can be opened?

Every detail in this photo is just lovely, but the view from the window a whole nother level.

The family who lives here has great taste in old school toys. Case in point, everything in the child's room above and the rocking swan toy a couple of photos up.

This is the unbelivably beautiful home of some very fortunate people who get to live on heaven-on-earth, aka The Cotswolds. Search for that name on Google images if you dare, but don't blame me if you suddenly start feeling very unsatisfied about the place you live in. I honestly don't understand how anyone can be content living in a city, especially one with little greenery and lots of unsightly concrete. Why don't developers and architects put their ego and greed aside and build us nice little cottages instead of "innovatively" misshapen or "practical" boxlike buildings?

Dünyadaki cennette, yahut İngiltere'deki "The Cotswolds" bölgesinde yaşayan aşırı şanslı insanlara ait bir ev bu. Erin'in Mutfağı

This is the kitchen from supermodel Erin O'Connor's 200 year old South London home. She owns a beautiful AGA cooker, a Smeg fridge, and reclaimed kitchen units that used to belong inside the laboratory of a Victorian girls school on her street. I quite like this cozy kitchen, aside from that lamp with tassels. The marble countertops look great and the cute wallpaper printed with teacups works here.

Süpermodel Erin O'Connor'ın Güney Londra'daki 200 yıllık evinin mutfağındayız. Siyah bir AGA fırını, Smeg buzdolabı ve oturduğu caddedeki eski bir Viktorya dönemi kız okulunun laboratuvarından kurtarılmış mutfak dolapları var. Yalnızca püsküllü lamba gözüme battı. Mermer tezgahlar çok güzel görünüyor, çay fincanı desenli duvarkağıdı da bu sıcak mutfağa gitmiş.

Okay, what is a gold parrot statuette doing on the stove? It's a mystery.

I normally skip December issues of magazines because they all kind of look alike. However, taking just a peek at Country Living UK's preview had me convinced I needed to see these cozy photos closer. Turns out it's quite the fulfilling issue, every page was a delight! It's one of those rare magazines that the reading material is consistently as substantial as the pictures.

Do you still buy print magazines or do you prefer digital versions? I'm a hardcore digital fan and find reading mags on an iPad surprisingly pleasant. I don't like buying directly from the App Store newsstand though, I use Zinio, that way I can read my magazines from a computer too, useful if you don't own a tablet. It's also much easier to navigate and you can see all your magazines in one place. I'm subscribed to Living Etc UK but it's getting kitscher and kitscher every month and has become quite cringeworthy, so I won't be renewing it this year. Instead, now that my all time favorite mag Elle Decor UK is on Zinio, I'll stick to that, with the occasional Country Living UK and Wallpaper thrown in. Yep, I like my magazines British!

Siz dergilerin basılı versiyonlarını mı tercih ediyorsunuz, yoksa dijital versiyonlarını mı? Ben bir dijital hayranıyım, üstelik tabletten dergi okumak şaşırtıcı derecede zevkli, insan kağıdı hiç aramıyor. Yabancı dergilerin fiyatları üzerinde yazan ücretin TL'ye çevrilmiş hali, yani olması gerektiği gibi. Basılı versiyonlarının fiyatları iyice uçtu son birkaç aydır, mağazalarda dikilerek okumaya çalışmaktan bıktım. Zinio'dan Living Etc'nın İngiliz versiyonuna aboneydim ama dergi rüküşlükte sınırları zorlamaya başladı, artık çekilmiyor. Ona aboneliğimi yenilemeyeceğim, yerine favori dergim Elle Decor UK'e geçeceğim, artık onun da dijital versiyonu var. Nezih'te, D&R'da basılısı 30 küsür lira, dijitali 11 lira! Bu yıl çoğunlukla onu alır, arada canım çektikçe de Country Living UK veya Wallpaper ile çeşnilendiririm diye düşünüyorum. Yerli dergiler kimse kusura bakmasın ama, bence çöp. Dekorasyon-tasarımda da, moda dergilerinde de en kaliteli bulduklarım İngiliz dergileri.

I spy a Chemex on the shelf above the girl.

I am wearing my glasses and unlike the girl in the photo, am quite comfortably curled up under a blanket. I'm dying for a fresh cup of coffee but since it's way past midnight, I'll resort to looking at pictures of it.

Pour-over brewing. The filter cone in this photo is a Bonmac. The exact one with the Blue-Bottle logo is for sale here. They also sell the black Bonmac slim pot which confuses me because it actually appears to be a Tsuki-Usagi slim pot, made by Noda Horo. It's on my wishlist. You can search for a Japanese enamel coffee pot or check out Labour and Wait or Neest, or Kiosk. Now you are confused too.

A "well seasoned" Bialetti. Most people don't wash their Bialetti moka pots, because if you do, apparently your coffee tastes like aluminum. I'm concerned about boiling anything in aluminum so I'm on the lookout for a stainless steel version. Better safe than sorry.

Am I crazy about the look of the recently renovated Sagmeister & Walsh studio? No, but I find it okay. Am I surprised? Yes. Much smaller and simpler than I anticipated. We have seen similar ones a hundred times but I guess wowing us is not the point. Still, the color coded books are a pet peeve of mine. A pet peeve that I have seen at least a hundred times.

When asked "Did your experience at the Leo Burnett agency play a large role in your deciding that maintaining a small business was better than running an office of over 100 people?", Sagmeister replies: "I saw at Burnett that I will not be able to actually design when my office is bigger, and I saw the advantages of a large office for the clients as tiny, while the disadvantages were huge."

Sagmeister & Walsh'un yenilenmiş stüdyolarını çok mu beğendim? Fena bulmamakla birlikte hayır. Beni şaşırttı mı? Kesinlikle evet. Tahmin edebileceğimden çok daha ufak ve basitmiş. Benzerlerini daha önce yüzlerce defa görmüşüzdür ama bu stüdyonun dekorasyonundaki amaç bizleri hayran bırakmak değil zaten. Yine de renklerine göre dizilmiş kitaplar epey gözümü tırmaladı, zaten hiç beğenmediğim, daha önce de yüzlerce kere gördüğüm bir dekorasyon klişesi.

"Leo Burnett ajansındaki deneyiminiz, 100'den fazla çalışanı olan bir ofisi idare etmektense küçük bir işi yönetmeyi tercih etmenizde büyük rol oynadı mı? diye sorulduğunda şu cevabı vermiş Sagmeister: "Burnett'de ofisim büyük olduğunda sahiden tasarım yapamayacağımı, ayrıca büyük bir ofisin müşteriler için avantajlarının çok az, dezavantajlarının ise devasa olduğunu gördüm."

A Small Apartment

Küçük Bir Daire

I prefer large spaces with furniture and accessories placed sparsely, no rugs at all. But sometimes you have to make do with the space and stuff you got. Having less stuff is much more difficult to achieve than having more because of the letting go and self-restraint aspects. If you have got the stuff but not the space, you have to be smart about storage. Let's admit 4 door wardrobes or bookcases upon bookcases don't look so good. I think it's a better sight to look at when you can avoid huge, bulky furniture when you can and go for open shelving on top of a nice credenza or something. Nothing should be too matchy matchy though. Display what you can, hide what you must.

If you don't have enough room for a clothing rack, a wall-mounted bar fulfills the same purpose! I like this idea. I'm sure a very organized person would prepare what to wear for every weekday and hang it all in a row, outfit by outfit.

Stüdyo, Kahve, Özgürlük

If I ever find a magic lamp, I'm going to ask the genie for a backyard studio. With only making that seemingly tiny wish, I trick the genie into giving me a backyard, a business that I run from my own studio, and a larger main property (since logically it should be larger than the studio). Yes, I'm very prepared for imaginary scenarios like that. I'm also set if a zombie apocalypse ever happens.

Jokes aside, I compiled my favorite photos from Coffeeklatch where they showcase the living and working spaces of creative types.

Sihirli bir lamba bulsam, cinden bir "arka bahçe stüdyosu" dilerdim. Bu basit görünen dilekle cini bana hem bir bahçe, hem kendi stüdyomdan yönettiğim bir iş, hem de (mantıken asıl bina stüdyodan büyük olacağından) büyük bir ev vermesi için kandırmış olurdum. Fantastik senaryolara işte böyle hazırlıklıyım sevgili okuyucu. Olası bir zombi istilasına karşı da kafamda hazırlıklar tamam.

Şaka bir yana, şu an baktığınız fotoğraflar yaratıcı kişiliklerin yaşama-çalışma mekanlarını gösteren Coffeeklatch adlı siteden seçtiğim favorilerim.

Beautiful desk. Yes, home offices get messy, you gotta embrace it. That paper sack thingy on the floor caught my eye because I have been seeing similar ones a lot lately; used in workspaces instead of trash cans. You can find some here.

Masa güzel. Evet, ev ofisler dağınık oluyor, kabullenmek gerek. Yerdeki büyük kesekağıdı görünümlü şeyin benzerleri son zamanlarda sık sık gözüme ilişiyor. Çalışma alanlarında çöp kutusu yerine bunları kullanmak çok revaçta sanırım. Burada satılıyor.

But first, coffee! I only buy freshly roasted beans and grind them for my french press at home, using a manual grinder. Such good coffee with such a cheap setup, you don't need a genie for that! As a result I can't drink the painfully bland coffee at those famous coffee chains.

Ama önce, kahve! Bu konuda titizim; yalnızca taze kavrulmuş kaliteli kahve çekirdekleri satın alıyorum (buradan). Evde el değirmeni kullanarak french press'ime göre çekiyorum. Türk kahvesine göre de çekebilirsiniz. Muhteşem kahveler içmek için büyük yatırımlar yapmaya veya bir cinden dilek dilemeye gerek yok. Tek dezavantajı ünlü kahve zincirlerinin bayat, dandik kahvelerine hiç tahammülümün kalmamış oluşu. Hele bana Nescafe ikram edecek babayiğide atacağım bakıştan kendim korkarım.

Dressing rooms for boys is quite a neglected subject, no? I have been thinking about where the clothes of the man fits in a girl's home. I looked at The Coveteur's Pinterest for ideas about what to do with more shoes than you can handle, especially men's shoes, but, the chaos and the overstuffedness (is that a word?) of those closets gave me a bad headache! Maybe I don't love clothes that much. These photos of the Toj rack by Simon Legald for Normann Copenhagen are more to my liking. Even in my dressing room I want the messy things behind closed doors and a few choices out in the open, it's less overwhelming that way.

I have a lot of clothes but I go through phases of getting fixated on a few certain pieces. While the rest of my clothes are in my closet, I hang "the edit" on a rack by Ikea and place a couple of pair of shoes on the floor right under it. I love that the Toj rack has a shelf, it may seem simple but it is quite clever and necessary for placing shoes.

As a home owner, I don't think there is a single object from Muuto that I would not enjoy having in my apartment. As a designer I count Muuto among the brands that I aspire to work with one day. They now have a Pinterest account which I started following the instant I heard about it. That's where these photos are from. I love the grey color palette with the occasional yellows and greens.

Bir ev sahibi olarak; Muuto'nun ürettiği ve benim evimde sahip olmaktan keyif almayacağım tek bir obje yok. Bir tasarımcı olarak; Muuto kesinlikle bir gün çalışmayı hayal ettiğim markalar arasında. Ev Ofis

This office consists of a simple desk with trestle legs and colorful accessories from Oyoy.

Bu ofis eşek ayaklı basit bir masa ve Oyoy'un renkli aksesuarlarından oluşuyor.

This one has the plywood desks from the vtwonen collection and of course is styled rather brilliantly by the vtwonen team. I'm loving the half black, half white curtain and how the colorblocking is at the exact height as it is on the wall.

Hollanda'nın başarılı dekorasyon dergisi vtwonen'nin kendi ismiyle yarattığı koleksiyona ait masanın fotoğraflarının styling'i de dergi ekibi tarafından yapılınca ortaya işte böyle güzel bir oda çıkıyor. Benim favori detayım alt kısmı siyah olan perde ve perdedeki siyah renk bloğunun yüksekliğinin duvardaki ile eş olması.

1-2-3 Hardal Sarısı

OK, so that was another big unannounced hiatus. In my defense, I have lost the will to write about decor. So unless I'm in a chatty mood, from now on there will be less talk, more photos. The fact that most of the home decor blogs I "read" are written in Swedish is proof that text is not that important and we are all here to look at the pretty pictures. Now that we are done with the intro all I have got to say is during the time I was away from this blog I have been drawn to everything that is mustard yellow and I need two small cushions in this shade.

Pekala, yine habersiz uzun bir ara verdim. Güzel fotoğraflar biriktirmeye devam ettim ama yazı yazacak ilhamı bulamadım sanırım. Belki bundan böyle az laf, çok fotoğraf eşittir daha çok post olabilir ha? Kendi takip ettiğim blogların çoğunun İsveççe oluşu dekorasyon bloglarında yazının anlamsızlık ve önemsizliğine delalet olabilir. Girizgahı yaptıktan sonra asıl diyeceğim şu ki son aylarda hardal sarısı olan herşey beni çekiyor. Bu renkte iki adet minik yastık arayışındayım.

THE Tiles

Karo/Fayans Dediğin

A few weeks ago, I was thinking about how I would do my bathroom if I could ever renovate it. That is not going to happen for at least a few years unless I win the lottery, and I don't hate my bathroom at all; it's nothing special but quite comfy. Still, I thought it would be nice to have my mind made up about it, just in case. I know I wouldn't want it to be too fancy or too simple and like my boiling hot showers too much to opt for aything other than tiles. I was only dreaming, mind you, but even in my dream it had to be practical (the inpractical version would have wooden floors, a freestanding tub and a huge window with the view of endless pastures). I decided that I wanted 3D geometric tiles on the floor, and subway tiles on the walls. I even researched and found where I could buy 3D floor tiles.

After finishing this mental project, I was delighted to come across this beautiful bathroom, by Linda Bergroth. It's great to see my vision put to reality in someone else's ~~guinea pig~~ bathroom, looking mighty awesome.

Birkaç hafta önce, aklıma bir düşünce düştü: banyoma tadilat yaptırabilecek olsam nasıl yapardım? Piyango çıkmadığı müddetçe önümüzdeki yıllarda böyle bir imkanım yok, banyomun mevcut durumundan da rahatsız değilim; şu an pek benim tarzım sayılmaz ama gayet konforlu. Yine de bir fikrim olsun istedim, düşündüm taşındım. Ne çok süslü, ne çok sade olsun, uzun vadede kaynar duşlarımdan etkilenmesin diye fayanstan şaşmayayım dedim. Hayalde bile pratiklikten şaşmıyorum gördüğünüz gibi, yoksa ben de bilirim ahşap yerler, ayaklı döküm küvet, sonsuz kırlara bakan kocaman bir pencere hayal etmeyi. Yerlerde üç boyutlu geometrik desenli, duvarlarda bembeyaz dikdörtgen karolarda karar kıldım. 3D illüzyonlu karoları nereden temin edebileceğimi dahi buldum.

Zihinsel projemi tamamladıktan sonra bu güzel banyoya denk geldiğimde pek sevindim, benim kafamdaki fikir başkasının ~~kobay faresinde~~ banyosunda vücut bulmuş, üstelik de harika görünüyor.
