I thought I’d end A2 Hosting’s 2009 blogging season with another cool Twitter tool I have found and used. I’ve always been a fan of keeping things very organized. That includes my desk space, email, computer files etc. But I was struggling to find a way to keep A2 Hosting’s Twitter account organized.

I wanted to keep our “Following” list neat and follow users that actually consistently use Twitter. Twitter isn’t a popularity contest for us. I wanted to find a way to remove inactive users, or people that haven’t tweeted in ages, so it would be easier to have effective conversations with other Twitterers and strengthen the A2 Hosting community. Twitoria is the perfect tool to find those inactive people.

Twitoria will pull a list of everyone that has been inactive on your following list for the past week, 2 weeks, month, 2 months, 6 months or past year. I think removing someone who has been inactive for the past week is very excessive, but taking a good look at who has been inactive for the past 6 months is definitely worthwhile. Twitter is obviously a great social networking tool, but only when others are contributing to it.

To another year of twittering fun, Happy New Year!

Symphony CMS Hosting has been available at A2 Hosting for awhile now, but I figured today was as good of a time as ever to make the announcement. Symphony CMS requires server support for PHP and MySQL. You’ll discover that every A2 Hosting package meets this key requirement. Symphony is a simple to use and standards compliant content management system. The first version was released 4 years ago in December of 2005. It allows webmasters to create simple blogs or full scale social network sites. Symphony CMS may seem like it’s lacking features, but that’s because it’s more of a framework. Webmasters can easily create and add the features they need that do not come pre-installed.

How about some Miscellaneous Friday content on a Wednesday? As the marketing manager for A2 Hosting, I like to encourage everyone to come up with an original idea for a website and run with it. When I come across a site that I feel is very original, I like to share it. I feel it helps everyone get their creative juices flowing.

This is where GradeFund comes into play. If you’re a student and concerned about how you will fund your college education, I strongly suggest that you check this site out. With GradeFund, students invite their friends, family, neighbors and anyone else they might know to help pay a portion of their tuition. Sponsors specify a dollar amount that they would like to pay for grades each semester.

So for example, a sponsor can choose to pay $6 for an A, $5 for a B etc. Each semester the student uploads their transcript. GradeFund then verifies the grades, collects the money from the sponsors and finally sends it to the school.

The genius behind GradeFund is that the sponsors pay for performance. The students only earn if they attain good grades. And since GradeFund sends the money directly to the college and not the student, the sponsors know their money is actually going towards tuition.

I just really wish this site was around when I was in college!

It was late December 24th, when all through A2 Hosting

The Guru Crew was stirring, 24/7 support they were boasting;

The servers were set up on racks with care,

In hopes that new customer sites would soon be there;

Webmasters were nestled all snug in their beds,

While visions of VPS Hosting danced in their heads

And mamma with her Mac, and dad with his PC,

Had settled down for a late-night development session with a cup of tea

When on his monitor there arose such a clatter,

Mom sprang up from her seat to see what was the matter.

Hosting speed faster than a flash,

How could it be? It cost such little cash.

Features galore appeared in front of his eyes

His reseller account was his holiday prize

When, what to my father’s unbelieving eyes did appear,

But a one-click Drupal installer brought him a tear

A hosting account so quick and alive,

Hosting one domain or even five.

More rapid than cheetahs the resources came,

PHP, MySQL, cPanel surely will soon bring them fame ;

A site uptime guaranteed at 99.9%

Website traffic would soon begin to ascent

Around the basement and down the hall

He screamed “I love this Linux hosting company” to one and all

Web hosting, dedicated server hosting with a whole slew

Award winning hosting it had to be true

So up to our house-top he rapidly flew,

With a laptop of files, a knit cap too

And then, in a twinkling, my family heard on the roof.

Our crazy father acting like such a goof

Screaming “Dash away, dash away from your other host provider”

The neighbors assured he was drinking spiked cider

“A2 Hosting will transfer your site for free!”

The neighborhood finally began to understand his glee

“A bundle of resources you’ll find in your account!

Unmetered hosting at an unbelievable discount!”

My dad’s eyes oh how they gleamed

His fantastic smile a giant light beam

Not enough was my present to him, an auto tape measure

We knew in our heart A2 Hosting was his true holiday treasure

As the amount of people you follow on Twitter begins to grow, you’re likely to see your amount of direct messages increase as well. Unfortunately the majority of these messages are spammy and useless. These messages generally look like:

“Look at how awesome I am. You can be awesome like me. How? Buy this awesome product from me: “http:myawesomesite.com.”

It had gotten to the point with the A2 Hosting Twitter account that the direct message feature was useless. It was so cluttered with these SPAM messages that I couldn’t even find the legitimate messages of people who wanted to actually correspond with us.

Are you fed up with these useless direct messages too? I discovered the solution! It turns out that the majority of these messages are automated and sent by using the service SocialOOmph. Luckily this site also allows you to opt out from receiving future messages from anyone that uses their service. I opted out last week and have not received one spammy direct message since. To opt out follow these instructions:

1.)    Follow @optmeout

2.) Wait until they follow you and send you a direct message.

3.) Respond to their message with any message. It doesn’t matter what you send back.

4.) They’ll send you message confirming that you’ve been opted out.

When I opted out, I also wanted a fresh start with an empty direct message box free from hundreds of spam messages. Twitter doesn’t really offer a good way to clean out your direct message box quickly. Instead, use SocialOOmph’s Mailbox Purge feature. Run this resource and everything in your direct message box will be deleted giving you a fresh start too.
