“No valid ‘aps-environment’” Error Google Gmail app for iPhone/iPad (UPDATED)

Google just released a Gmail app for the iPhone/iPad/iPod (ios 4/ios 5), but it comes with the following error: “no valid ‘aps-environment’ entitlement string found for application”

This error seems to be associated with a bug in the apps push notification system. I’m sure an update will be pushed through soon to fix this problem. Until then, the Google Gmail app isn’t going to be so useful. Kind of sad to think that with this bug, the crummy native mail.app is more useful.

Has Google released a product in the past three years that didn’t have problem from launch? It seems like they have a few fantastic products, but a bunch more that don’t ever take off. Remember the Google 3D virtual room thing? What the hell was the deal with that?

Update: Google has already pulled the Gmail app from the Apple app store: “The iOS app we launched today contained a bug with notifications. We have pulled the app to fix the problem. Sorry we messed up.” (Link to Official Tweet) If this were something from a small developer I’d be more inclined to understand, but seriously Google? With as rigorous a hiring scheme as you have, this is the best you can do?

Why isn’t there a usenet binary downloader for the iphone or ipad?

I read over on sabnzbd’s forum that they are avoiding such an app because of battery issues. I have no problem plugging in if it means I can download on the go without having to bring a computer. I’m sure there would be a number of people willing to pay through Cydia to getting a working usenet binary downloader.

Please post a comment if you have any insight into why such an app hasn’t been created.

SN2 SN1 E1 E2 Subtitution and Elimination

Elimination versus Substitution Reactions:

The first step to understanding SN2, SN1, E1, and E2 reaction mechanisms is to ask yourself two questions (CCSF, Dr. Pauly 2011):

Is the leaving group on a primary, secondary, or tertiary substrate?
What are the characteristics of the nucleophile/base (Strong or Weak)?

After you identify the substrate go to the appropriate section below. Then, using a pKa table with conjugate bases (I’ll upload one soon), determine if your regent is a strong nucleophile and/or base.

The basicity of the base/nucleophile and the structure of the alkyl halide are the most important
factors to consider when deciding whether a reaction proceeds by a Substitution or Elimination
mechanism. Also the structure of the base can be important when bulky bases are used to effect an
E2 elimination.

Primary Alkyl Halides:

SN2 reaction is favored, even with strong bases/nucleophiles such as CH3CH2ONa or NaOH.
They will not act as bases in the reaction but as a Nucleophile and attack the primary halide, and do
a SN 2 displacement.

b. The only time you get an elimination reaction is with a bulky base such as (H3C)3CONa
(sodium t-butoxide). With added steric bulk, t-butoxide can not act as a nucleophile, therefore only
an elimination process (E2) can occur.

c. Even with a poor nucleophiles such as H20, ROH or H28, any substitution reaction that will
occur will proceed via an SN2 mechanism.

2. Secondary Alkyl Halides:

With Bases/Nucleophiles that are strongly basic, such as NaOH (pKa of H2O=15) and RONa
(pKa of alcohols=16-18) elimination will predominate. Other bases that could lead to elimination
with secondary alkyl halides : Acetylene anion( HC5_CNa) NaNH2 and other conjugate bases of
acids with a pKa>145.

With weakly basic but good nucleophiles (NaCN, NaOgCCH3, NaN 3, NH3) SN2 will
predominate (pKa range 5-12 for the above bases/nucleophiles). A polar aprotic solvent will
improve conditions for an SN2 process.

For the above two scenarios (a and b) one must realize that although we are predicting the major
product in these reactions, SN2 and E2 reactions are competitive processes. Both products most
likely will be observed, with one compound in a greater proportion. We would have to do the
chemistry to test accuracy and usefulness of our predictions. (i.e. Good desired product ratio such
as 80:20 vs a poor ratio such as~60:40)

With poor nucleophiles such as H20 or ROH, an SN1 reaction process would predominate, with
the accompanying minor product being the E1 product. Anything that might stabilize the
intermediate cation (Resonance) such as the cation being allylic (or benzylic) or the use of a polar
protic solvent would increase the likelihood of and SN1 reaction.

Tertiary Alkyl Halides:

With Bases/Nucleophiles that are strongly basic, such as NaOH and RONa elimination (E2) will
predominate. Other bases that could lead to elimination : Acetylene anion, HC§CNa, NaNH2 and
other conjugate bases of acids with a pKa315.

With poor nucleophiles such as H20 or ROH, an SN1 reaction process would predominate, with
the accompanying minor product being the El product. The SN1 process is aided by _the use of a
polar protic solvent.

SN1 reactions also occur with tertiary alcohols with treatment with a mineral acid (HX such as:
HCl, l—lBr etc.) to form tertiary alkyl halides.

Strongly Basic/Nucleophilic:
General Rule: pKa>l5 – NaOH, RONa, NaNH2, HC5CNa

Moderately Nucleophilic, Weakly Basic:

General Rule: 5

Non-Basic, Weakly Nucleophilic:
General Rule: pKa

I just listened to the new SaReGaMa album Fractal Universe: http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/100284

The album is quite great. A few of the tracks took my mind back to a beautiful memory of sitting in a tea house in Prague with a very special friend. We would lay in the tea house listening to music, drinking tea, and eating snacks for hours on end. I have never been is such a peaceful place before or since.

iPhone iOS 5 Cydia White Icon

So…did you just jailbreak your amazing new idevice to find that cydia is just a white icon and won’t load? Well a goat is here to help. All you’ll need to turn off your idevice (iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4s, iPad 1, iPad 2, iPod touch. Note that the iPad 2 and iPhone 4s are not yet supported for jailbreaking.) and load up redsn0w or whatever you used to jailbreak, set the program for “just boot” and follow the steps.
