There can also be differences when it comes to shipping a sedan versus shipping an SUV or pickup truck. In most cases, it’s not a matter of the time it will take, but the technology and equipment that needs to be used and the cost of the transport. So, what causes the difference in pricing when shipping a sedan versus an SUV or pickup truck?

Weight Differentials

The weight of the vehicles being transported affects the transporting process in a number of ways.

• Heavier vehicles require more fuel on the part of the towing vehicle.
• Vehicles with higher weights will often bring the transport’s speed down, either through sheer mass or the driver may need slower speeds due to safety concerns. Either way, this lengthens the transport time, and more time on the road means a higher cost for the hauler.
• Heavier loads cause greater wear and tear on trailers and components.
• Auto transporters must adhere to the rules of the road, including strict weight limits. This could lead to the hauler having to haul a load that is short a vehicle or two if some of them are heavier. Not being able to fill all spots means that the hauler either has to raise the price per vehicle, or risk losing money on the transport.
• Heavier loads require larger vehicles with larger engines and stouter frames.

All of these factors mean that carriers need to charge heavier vehicles such as pickups, large SUVs, and vans a higher rate. While the average sedan weighs in at around 3,400 pounds, with full-size sedans being a bit heavier, the average SUV weighs in at 4,800 pounds, with some heavy-duty, full-size SUVs getting close to 3 tons. That really adds up when you start loading multiple vehicles onto a carrier

Overall Size Matters

It’s not just the weight of a vehicle that matters. The different measurements of a vehicle can all throw their own individual wrench into the works when it comes to transport. Dimensions of vehicles and the trailers used in transport don’t always work together.

Vehicle Length

Automotive carriers only have a finite amount of space in or on the trailers they use to move vehicles. This means that while smaller sedans can be parked nose to tail throughout a standard carrier, longer vehicles – in particular those over 300 inches in length, like some vans, full-size SUVs, and pickup trucks – need careful structure in the load. A large pickup truck most likely will take up 1 ½ spots on a trailer forcing the carrier to lose a spot if they aren’t able to find a much smaller vehicle to fit in the remaining spot.

In some cases, these extra-long vehicles will cause the carrier to have to try and find a super-compact sedan to balance the length overlap. If the hauler can’t find a compact vehicle to even things out, they’ll have to charge an additional fee.

Vehicle Width

Especially if you have a pickup truck with dual wheels in the rear, the width can be a factor when it comes to finding a hauler and getting the pricing for hauling your vehicle. The average trailer is built for the average-width vehicle – and even a little bit wider. But those large pickup trucks, as well as wide SUVs such as Hummers and some older full-sized SUVs, might not fit between the supports of the upper deck. These may require custom hauling that can drive the price up.

Vehicle Height

The bridges and roadways of the country put a limit on just how high a vehicle can be, so hauling tall vehicles can also impact how a vehicle is hauled and the cost. Traditional open-air trailers can stack two vehicles, one on the upper deck and one on the lower. The average SUV or pickup truck is around 6 feet in height, but some can be higher – raised trucks, vans, and more. To keep auto transporters from ending up on a “Fails” video, where we cringe as the top rack is crushed under a low bridge, many carriers will make an effort to stay on the safe side and leave tall vehicles for single-level carriers.

Auto Shipping Methods

As you can tell from the above, sometimes you may need to consider alternative shipping methods to the average open-air trailer when you need to transport a truck or SUV versus a sedan. For extra-wide vehicles, sometimes a flatbed or being towed behind a hauler is the best option. The same goes for taller vehicles, with single-level flatbed hauling being the best option. Long vehicles sometimes face the same dilemma – although they can fit on the standard trailer.

When it comes down to it, shipping a sedan will almost always be cheaper than shipping an SUV or pickup truck. What has made them long a favorite of buyers and drivers – the right size, lightweight, easy to maneuver – makes them easy and relatively inexpensive to transport from one place to another.

The difference in pricing when shipping an SUV or pickup truck is justifiable, and for the shipper, is worth it to know that the price is higher to ensure the safety and success of the transport! In normal circumstances, cars can be directly driven onto and off the carrier. However, because non-running vehicles cannot be driven onto the carrier, they are usually “winched” or loaded with a liftgate.

If your car does not start, typically all that is needed is a winch to pull it onto the carrier. On the other hand, if your car has severe damage and cannot roll, brake, or steer, a winch alone would not be able to get it into the carrier. If this is the case, your car will need to be lifted using a liftgate or forklift.

Tip: The safest way to ship a classic or exotic car is on an enclosed carrier that will protect it from weather, road debris, and the possibility of damage on its journey. This is, of course, the more expensive choice, but given the financial and sentimental value of such cars, this option makes perfect sense.

What is a non-running car?

As the name suggests, a non-running car is a car that simply won’t start or be driven on and off the car carrier safely due to structural issues. The most likely cause of a non-running vehicle is, of course, mechanical failure due to collision damage. Not all non-running vehicles are broken down cars, though. In many cases, a classic car that is being restored, and has been purchased from a seller in another state can also be considered inoperable.

Is shipping a non-running car more expensive?

Winches and lift gates are additional equipment that do not come standard on most car carriers. This means that not all auto transport companies can ship non-running cars. Additionally, non-running vehicles can be a bit difficult to operate at times, so the drivers who deal with them have to be highly trained to safely handle the different procedures and equipment involved in shipping a non-running car.

Distance

The most obvious factor, the further the drive, the longer it will take. As our team at Number 1 Auto Transport Group operates with safety and security in mind, all of our drivers follow the posted speed limits and operate according to the USDOT’s Hours of Service Regulations. Ensuring proper rest breaks and on/off duty rules means are drivers are careful and alert at all times on the road.

Realistically, this means that transit time – from the day of loading to the day of unloading – will range from 400 to 500 miles per day, depending on the route. While our team members can make great time rolling across the flat plains on clear, high-speed highways, they can lose time on winding mountain climbs and through crowded metropolitan areas.

So don’t expect that we can overnight a car across the country, but expect that we can provide a reasonable and accurate estimate of the shortest possible time from pick-up to delivery.

Just as in real estate, location matters quite a bit. Some areas are simply harder to reach than others. The closer a location is to main highways, interstates, and metropolitan areas, the more likely there is to be easy access for carriers. Rural areas, with rough and winding roads, tight passages, and low clearance areas, present a greater delay of difficulty. From single-vehicle and single-level trailers to car carriers, there are nearly ten times more available open-air trailers. Enclosed trailers, while available, often take longer to schedule and can take a little more time in transit. Particularly for classic cars and high-end vehicles, some of which have tight clearances or very specific care needs.

The good news? Once your vehicle is loaded and secure, the travel time for enclosed or oversized vehicle haulers isn’t notably longer than with your average open-air carrier.

Time of Year

Both in terms of volume of work and the general weather around the country, the time of year definitely impacts how long it takes to ship a car.

From late spring through early fall, auto transport companies see a higher amount of transport requests than through the winter. With so many vehicles being transported, it is easy to find and schedule openings. At the same time, better weather means the carriers are more likely to have clear sailing from pick-up to drop-off.

In the winter, there are fewer vehicles being moved – so there are fewer spots available on the road, meaning it may take longer to schedule a transport. Winter also brings cold weather that makes loading and unloading more difficult, and that can bring road conditions that need greater caution, slowing down the transporters. Vehicle safety comes first, all the time, so our drivers will take the necessary precautions to make sure your car, truck, or SUV arrives in mint condition, even if it means a slower trip.
