Micromax launches its new tablet plus phone the micromax a110 superfone aka canvas 2 with a bam in the market. And it proves itself to be an awesome device loaded with almost everything one can desire from a high end phone. Its our own indian version of note 2. I got my hands on this device a month ago and i must say i have never ever been more impressed with any other mobile phone ever. I was impressed all round, whether it be the price of micromax canvas 2 or its build, design or its features and specifications.

As a successor of the micromax’s previous phablet the A100 , the canvas 2 offer much more. With dual core processor it lines itself up among  the poweful devices. The 8 megapixel camera also comes as an improvement over the 5MP camera in the a100.

You don’t need to be able to afford samsung galaxy 3 or note 2 to have the power in your hands any more. If you haven’t had any of those before, Micromax a110 will be your love too. And yes at the astonishing price of around Rupees 10,000 it packs features worth more than 20,000. Lets proceed to the full review,

Build of Micromax A110: As you can see in the pic, micromax a110 canvas 2 looks really sleek at 9.7mm deep and its looks match to note 2 to a great extent so that is a plus of course. The 5 inch IPS screen is nicely fit into the durable plastic body and is in symmetry. The sides have a silver lining that gives the phone an elegant finish. On the top are two slots one for the 3.5mm jack and the other for usd cable. Now thats a little change. The ninja series of the mixromax phones had the usb slot at the bottom.

To the left of the phone edge you have the volume rocker button and to the right the power button.The back of micromax a110  consist of a cool well finished plastic over that seem to resist scratches to a level but is a little prone to finger prints. On the top of the back you have an 8MP camera with a dual LED flash. The camera protrudes a little out of the body making it prone to a damage, however thats not a big issue. Overall the built of the the micromax a110 is very nice and it really appears to be a high end smartphone only if the micromax logo wasn’t there .

The touch screen display of micromax canvas 2: With a 5 inch display micromax have managed to do justice with quality. The screen is a 5 point multi-touch IPS display that means you can view images, movies etc from any angle with comfort. The resolution of 480×854 is just sufficient to provide you crisp images and quality video viewing experience.  Anything lower than that would have been bad.

The processor , GPU and gaming of micromax A110: Wow , i am a gaming freak and when i ordered i really didn’t expect canvas 2 to be so capable when it comes to gaming. The dual core processor does the justice and i was really unsure if the 512 Mb of RAM would be sufficient to meet my gaming needs and to my surprise it did.

The processor is a dual core 1 Ghz ARM v7 which accompanies the PowerVR  SGX531 GPU which is an advantage over the adreno 200 GPU in the previous devices of micromax.

I ran almost all the HD games i know of and they ran without any lags although you can compare the graphics quality with the tegra 3 but still no lag means much to me. Temple run Brave, ShadowGun, Gta3, Nova, Cut the rope, RIP Tide , Asphalt , NFS are few of the games that i successfully played at the micromax A110 canvas 2.

Although you need to have a task killer handy to kill all tasks when you play more resource heavy games. That should give you an idea about the gaming.

The Video play back of micromax canvas 2 superfone is awesome too. It plays 720p videos with ease and although people might argue but with some tweaks i managed to play 1080p videos to , so that really freaking awesome, isn’t it ?

Micromax A110 Camera Review: The canvas 2 sports an 8MP camera however it can disappoint you in poorly lit conditions. Besides that it has a great camera. The images are vibrant and full of colors and depth. It has some very nice functions built in that you can play with. It has an HDR function , two panorama modes which is a success in my opinion. There are a lots of modes you can click you pics in , like the mono , sepia, aqua, negative and lost more. There are both focus modes available , the autofocus and touch to focus which i think is just awesome. While clicking a picture you can focus the object that you like.

You can shoot HD Videos upto 720p with the micromax a110 camera and the video are really good for an 8 MP camera. Again if you haven’t used an iphones, or note’s camera , you will really be overjoyed at the quality it renders.

The only drawback as i mentioned earlier is that the camera doesn’t perform very well in cloudy or badly lit conditions. The photograph might appear vibrant on the screen of the phone due to i think a little over saturated display but at the computer the colours look a bit unreal. But hey again that can be ignored if you are not much of a photographer.

Battery performance: The Canvas 2 comes with a 2000 Mah lithium ion battery which boasts a 5 hours of talktime and 180 hours of standby. However everybody knows how much the practical numbers differ from those. Anyways, the battery performs good. However i have used some tweaks to improve the battery of my canvas 2 but without them with moderate use it lasts 1 and a half day and with my tricks i manage to push it to more than 2 days. So battery backup of micromax a110 canvas 2 is good overall.

• There is no dedicated camera key and you have to shoot pictures from the touch interface

Best price of micromax A110 canvas 2: The device is just awesome at the price tags it is sold at. Although the prices can go as high as 13,000 rupees depending upon where you are purchasing it from. This phone is selling like hot cakes and it was unavailable in my city , out of stock at flipkart and many other online stores but the best prices i saw for micromax canvas 2 was 9,490 at saholic but since it was out of stock there i managed to get it for 10,200 Rs from Ebay.

Final Verdict: The superfone is awesome at the price it is being made available at and is a must buy without any questions.

I previously talked about the problems associated with booking of aakash tablet and how much pain in head have the deliveries become.Since the starting of aakash tablet prebooking there was no definite means to book the device and track its status afterwards. There was no proper support desk system implemented to solve people’s issues. People had to contact the vendors via email and they took ages for a reply in case they got one. This irregularity in aakash tablet’s booking and delivery system caused a lot of chaos around and thing to go unsystematic.

Flooded with consumer’s email and due to the inability to respond to each of them the makers of ubislate and aakash finally incorporated a query form to  let people communicate with the support but later that was taken down too.

As of now there is no proper system to send the aakash tablet’s support staff a ticket neither there is a tracking mechanism to check your tablets real time delivery status. This has been the biggest drawback with this venture which has not yet been properly rectified.

There are only a few means left to contact the support unit and hope to get a reply back from them. I am listing all the possible means to contact support and ask about the status of your akash tablet:

1) The first and the most appropriate method to contact them is via this contact form here. I sent these people a question and it was answered in 6 days. So atleast you know you will get a reply from them.

2) Contact them via email here sales@datawind.com . I send them quite a few email queries and some were responded to and some went unanswered. So its your luck.

3) Their facebook fan page here. Don’t confuse this with their official page. It is just a fan page created for informational purposes by aakash tablet lovers and it is likely that people from datawind support will be watching the problems posted here. So you can post your problem there too but don’t expect a personalized reply. I didn’t get one.

4) The last resort which i think is now closed will be try datawinds toll free number that they once started as a helpline for users to check the status of their booking or delivery of aakash tablet. But the last call i made to this number didn’t connect. Here is the number 1-800-180-2-180

Indian government and datawind finally took criticism of their ambitious project aakash seriously and launched the tablets with upgraded features to make them acceptable among indian technology freaks.  They have realized the fact that they can not sell their product solely due to it being the cheapest among the other tablets. The new versions of the android device come with acceptable features and specifications although the hike in price was inevitable. However , with these specs aakash 2 still remains the cheapest tablet with standard specifications in its category.

The revisions to the former version of akash were made by extensive research conducted by IIT Bombay if Mr. kapil sibbal is to be believed. He has strong faiths in the success of the upgraded version of the tablet and propagated it to be a perfect mix of affordability and latest technology.

The new revised ubislate tablet has been launched as three different models Ubislate 7ci, Ubislate 7c+ and ubislate 7cz. Most of the specifications and features of all the three are same with one or two exceptions.  The common features of all the three are listed below:

• Capacitive Display: This is a big improvement from aakash to aakash 2. The resistive screen has been replaced by capacitive multitouch 7 inches screen which adds a lot to the user experience. Now you can navigate through your tab with ease.
• 1 GHz Processor: The processor is a 1 Ghz Cortex A8 which is quite a capable one. Runs programs with any lag and does resource intensive tasks easily.
• Memory: The RAM has been upgraded to 512 MB which is just sufficient , 1 GB would have been much better though. It comes with a 4gb of internal memory which is quite sufficient to install all the apps you like.
• Connectivity: All the three models have Wi-fi as the connectivity option. All the three come with USB support.There is a memory card slot which you can use to expand the memory upto 32 GB.
• All the three have front VGA Camera for video calling.
• All the three have android 4.0.3 as the operating system.

Besides all the above mentioned common features of different models of aakash 2 below is the comparison of features that make three of them different.

Ubislate 7 ci is the commercial version of the upgraded aakash 2. This tablet is available at discounted prices from indian government only via educational institutions primarily IIT Bombay. However datawind has listed the commercial versions of all the three models on sale on its website. The prices each of the version of aakash 2 are as follows:

• Ubislate 7ci (Or aakash 2) costs Rs 4,499
• Ubislate 7c+ costs Rs. 4,999
• Ubislate 7CZ which is the most advanced version costs 5,999

The booking of aakash tablet and its delivery have always been big problems. But i guess this inconvenience is being taken care of now.The first one can be ordered and it is dispatched within 24-48 hours of receiving the payment. The other two can be pre booked here and they are generally shipped within 6-8 weeks of making the payment as claimed by datawind on their website. There used to be a form to to check the booking status of aakash tablet but it doesn’t exist any more. I guess the support team was flooded with requests and it decided to shut down the facility.

Anyways, the aakash venture seems to be recovering from its initial flaws and complaints. I would really love to see if it wins user vote in india again.

Since the lauch of Aakash tablet on one hand it has been praised a lot for the price it has been made available to the indian mass. On the other hand it has been criticized for compromised specifications and features. However considering everything and summing it up Akash tablet is a good product for the starters who have always wished to own a tablet pc and could not afford it  and has a great scope of improvement. Although the only thing that overwhelms me is the price of aakash tablet but lets talk about its specifications first.

1)Processor: It  comes bundled with an ARM 11 processor with the clocking frequency of 366 Mhz which i would call rather slow. When compared with other similar devices akash tablet lags way behind. This means you need to have a lot of patience if you have requirements like high quality gaming and you are addicted of watching high quality videos. Although low resolution videos run well on this tablet pc.

2)Battery: The capacity of the battery of akash tablet is 2100 Mah which i would consider to be a little less considering the screen size. With a 7 inches display it would hardly be able to manage a playback time of 2 hours. I consider this a drawback obviously. The battery has also been reported to have some heating issues.

3) Connectivity and Network: The tablet provides you average connectivity  with integrated Wi-Fi 802.11 . I wish it could have gone a little further providing 3g connectivity. WI-Fi has not evolved too much in india as of now and hence it limits the usage of internet to urban areas where Wi-Fi hotspots are available devoiding the rural people from enjoying browsing internet etc. One convincing feature that has been introduced into this tablet is USB connectivity which can both be used to transfer data to and from it and also to connect it internet dongles to browse internet in case Wi-Fi is not available.

4) Display: It comes with a 7 inches resistive display which i would call not too much complaining at the price this tablet is sold. Although capacitive screen could have given a much better user experience and multi touch feature. However the resistive screen does the job and is quite manageable.

5)Memory specifications: No too much should be expected from a 256 mb RAM which is just enough to run basic tasks on akash tablet. It comes with a secondary memory of 2 GB which can be expanded upto 32 Gb using micro SD card.

6)Operating System: Aakash tablet runs on Android Version 2.2 also known as froyo. But it devoids its users from the most exciting feature of using android platform which is android market. Yes that means you will not be able to download apps and other stuff from android’s own store. I hope this feature would be made available in the upcoming version of this tablet pc.

So , all in all datawind’s ambitious venture is quite a basic gadget which is not too much techie and sophisticated and admittedly a low end , average performing device. Still the shotcomings are suppresed by its price tag and leave us without any complains.

Now come the best part.Akash tablet has been made available as two versions , one of which is sold commercially to general public and the other one is meant for only indian students. The specifications of both being same , the commercial version is priced at 2,500 INR or approximately USD 50. For students it has been presented at ridiculously low price at 1,138 Indian rupees or USD 25 after the cost being subsidized and slashed to less than 50%.

Whatever the verdicts be the fact is that akash tablet has developed its own craze which doesn’t seem to be stop any time sooner specially with the announcement of improved version being released in near future.

Aakash tablet booking for the upgraded version has already been started. The tablet seems to be sold out for the months of may and june however you can prebook it for the month of july yet. The delay in the delivery has been a major drawback for the vendors and a frustration for the customers. I see everyone posting their booking ids to know the status of their delivery. As of today datawind has not yet made any arrangements to check aakash tablet pre booking status. The only option left for people is to flood datawind support with queries which datawind have apparentely failed to cater.

The vendors have been promising priority delivery to those who pay beforehand for the tablet, however all of those who payed in advance and those who didn’t seem to be suffering with delivery issues. The company keeps on advertizing a 7 day delivery but all the promises seem to have not been kept. The facts say that over 1.8 million bookings have been made for the tablet but not more than 2% of them were  delivered, moreover the lack of support makes people go mad.

The stimuli  to aakash tablet’s launch was so much that datawind was forced to install three new production units in order to satisfy public demand. What made people go crazy behind aakash was the cheap price tag and i suppose that the makers didn’t anticipate so much of the public response which is why they failed to deliver what they promised which caused late delivery issues and all. The most prominent problem for the people who have already booked the tablet is the inability to check their order status. Datawind should have incorporated some means to allow people to check their order tracking which is suppose was not a difficult task.

If you are planning to book the tablet you must know a few things:

1) Datawind assures priority delivery to people who prepay but after having investigated it seems it makes no difference whether you pay first or on delivery, you will have to face late delivery problems.

2) Their is no tracking system installed on their official website so you would not be able to track the status of booking of your tablet.

3) it is very unlikely that the support team responds to your query . After you have made your booking , the only option left to know the status is to contact datawind directly. You will have to wait indefinitely to receive a response from them.

Finally there are not too many news of people receiving the upgraded aakash . Once we get them we will bring them to you.

The wait for the much anticipated akash tablet has been quite a pain in head for indian people. The last news about the specifications of the tablet being finalized were dated to the start of this month. This happened just after the union human resource development minister of india Kapil sibbal said that the low cost aakash tablet’s upghraded version will be maid available by the end of may 2012.

This time however there are signs that we may get our hands over the tab by the end of this month in june after the news that aakash tablet is being tested by IIT Mumbai.

The authorities at Datawind mentioned that the upgraded features of the tablet are in the course of being tested by IIT mumbai and that the institution is on its way to developing apps for educational institutes in india. Datawind CEO mentioned that they have sent around 100 samples of upgraded devices to IIT and they are expecting the report within a short time. Based on this fact Kapil sibbal reported that the features of new aakash will be nailed down by the end of june 2012 and the production be started.

Datawind , the company that supplies akash to indian government, was all over news when introduced the cheapest tablet of the world at the price of under 2,500 rupees the prices of which were futher slashed by subsidy provided by indian government to make them available to students for below Rs. 1,200. The Drawbacks of aakash tablet:

Although the improved version of the tablet does very well at providing good specifications at very cheap prices however i think datawind should have accommodated a little more even if that raised the prices slighly.The first thing i wish it had is atleast 512mb of RAM. With 256 Mb you can’t be playing HD videos with a couple of games and an application minimized. The second and the most disappointing thing is that the upgraded aakash tablet lacks android market too. You can’t utilize the flexibility and power of android OS without having access to the huge world of android apps available at android market. The getjar portal in no way compensates the lack of Android market.
All in all ,there is very less to complain about when it carries the tag of being the cheapest tablet pc of the world.
