For those sad or anal enough to worry about getting our sites w3 validated, this .net2 tip has proved very helpful. Even though I set the xhtmlConformance to Strict in my web.config, my newly created asp.net2 application still failed on the W3C Markup Validation Service.

Why? Well I'll let idunno.org tell you that...

"The W3C validator is treated as a down level browser and is served invalid xhtml. As asp.net 2.0 doesn't know about the w3c validator user agent it gets things wrong, viewstate isn't wrapping in a div, adds a name attribute to the form tag, control validators have font tags and other little niggles..."

So it turns out you need to add a new w3c capabilities browser file under App_Browsers. Recompile, deploy and hey presto! Perfect w3c validation.
