FCC Orders to Suspend Payments to Pakistani Telecom Operators for Charging Higher Call Rate

The Federal Communications Commission, the regulatory body in USA, has ordered all U.S. telecommunications service providers to freeze payments to Pakistani long-distance carriers for termination services in excess of 2 cents per minute.

In an order issued on March 5th, 2013 and posted to the FCC website yesterday, the agency’s International Bureau agreed to partly grant an October 2012 petition by Vonage Holdings Corp. for commission intervention in what the company claims is a 500 percent increase in the rates charged for outgoing calls to Pakistan.

Such rates prior to Oct. 1, 2012, had been based on cost, averaging $0.02 per minute, but Pakistani carriers decided to raise the rate to $0.088 per minute following the creation of a new “International Clearing House.”

AT&T Inc. also supported Vonage’s petition, and said that Pakistani carriers’ actions violate the commission’s policies protecting U.S. consumers against anticompetitive conduct by foreign carriers to force “above-cost” settlement rate hikes.

However, instead of issuing a full stop payment order as requested by Vonage, AT&T recommended that the commission issue an order prohibiting increased U.S. settlement payments above the rates that existed before Oct. 1, 2012.

FCC in its order said:

“We find anticompetitive the Pakistani LDI [long-distance international] carriers’ actions demanding a substantial rate increase above previously negotiated rates in a way that amounts to a rate floor. By establishing the International Clearing House plan, the Pakistani carriers acted in concert to impose unilaterally this rate floor without engaging in meaningful negotiations with U.S. carriers and foreclosing future separate negotiations between U.S. and individual LDI correspondent carriers.”

“Vonage is extremely disappointed in the exorbitant price increase imposed by the Pakistani providers. The increase hurts consumers and prevents us from providing greater value to our Pakistani customers,” said Michael Tempora, Senior Vice President of Product Management for Vonage. “Vonage appreciates the efforts of the United States government and the FCC. We are hopeful that this Order will spark a prompt reduction in calling rates so that consumers can once again afford to call Pakistan with the freedom and frequency they enjoyed before.”

It merits mentioning here that telecom operators in Pakistan were charging higher calls and hence had posted tremendous increase in stock value and revenues during Q4 2012. With this order, and possibly the similar action in other markets, operators are likely to face the monetary brunt.

Rovio Slashes the Price of Angry Birds on iOS to Free to Boost Sales

Rovio, the company behind Angry Birds, the most successful game of recent times has cut off the price of its popular Angry Birds and Angry Birds HD titles to free as an effort to boost sales of the games again.

The move saw the Angry Birds app being chosen as the App of the week.

The apps were already free on Android but its only now that they’ve seen their price getting slashed to ZERO on iOS. Their free versions have been pulled down from some markets as well. Rovio, however, hasn’t confirmed yet whether the move is temporary but its highly likely that it isn’t.

Mobilink Q4 2012 Revenues Up 9%

Mobilink has posted forth quarter revenues of Rs. 27.2 billion, up 8.9 percent from Rs. 24.98 billion during the same period last year.

Company’s EBITDA in local currency increased 12 precent to Rs. 11.7 billion up from Rs. 10.4 billion in last quarter of previous year. Capex was down 8 percent to USD 101 million in Q4 2012.

Mobilink said that its revenues were hurt mainly by forced network suspensions from government due to security reasons. Company said that it was asked to shut down cellular services during Eid holiday in October, Ashura and other occasions in November and December, resulting in revenue loss for Mobilink and all other cellular operators in Pakistan.

Furthermore, new regulatory guidelines were issued on retail channel sales, resultantly Mobilink added a net 67,000 new subscribers while its market share settled at 29.6 percent down 0.8 percent during same period last year.

Mobilink’s ARPU in local currency stood at Rs. 243 up from Rs. 235 during the same period previous year.

Mobilink said that it signed an agreement with Huawei and Alcatel-Lucent for modernizing the network, paving the way to introducing 3G services, as soon as these are licensed in Pakistan.

During the same quarter, Mobilink in partnership with Waseela Microfinance Bank, launched Mobile Financial Services with brand name of ‘MobiCash’.

Government Will Open YouTube Before Dissolving Assemblies - Naveed Qamar

Naveed Qamar, federal defence minister, has assured the National Assembly or lower house of parliament that government will open the access of YouTube in Pakistan before dissolution of assemblies, i.e. with-in less than a week and a half.

Mr. Qamar said that government is seriously considering to unblock the video sharing website in the country, which was banned on September 17th, 2012 after a anti-Islamic video shared on website had crippled large scale protests from Muslims in Pakistan and worldwide.

Mr. Naveed Qamar, who was responding to a question raised by Shazia Marri, a lawmaker of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party, said that a decision on whether to unblock YouTube “would be taken within a couple of days”.

Ms. Marri had maintained that blocking YouTube is not the ultimate solution. She said that YouTube was blocked last year and enough time has passed by now after which government should consider to unblock the website.

Shazia Marri insisted that Interior Minister and other concerned bodies should devise a plan to get YouTube unblocked in the country.

It merits mentioning here that a recently held talks between Pakistan Telecommunication Authority and Google for blockade of anti-Islamic content in Pakistan failed.

This 10-digit number is also bigger than any other company’s advertising expenditures. Even Apple didn’t spend nearly as much money on advertising.

Intel Pakistan has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF – Federal Ministry of Science & Technology) to support Intel Pakistan in holding Science Fairs all over the country.

The MoU will bring Intel Pakistan and PSF together to work for accelerating the pace and scale of education in Pakistan and will create awareness and promote research in Sciences. PSF works to promote scientific research and provide funding for research projects in the areas of Agricultural Sciences, Biological Sciences, Bio-technology and Genetic Engineering, Chemical Sciences, Information Technology, Mathematical Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Engineering, Earth sciences, Medical sciences and Physics.

The Foundation has so far funded 1031 research projects in various fields of Science and Technology and has been supporting Intel in conducting the Intel ISEF affiliated National Science Fairs ever since the inception of the program in Pakistan in the year 2003.

Under this project, PSF will support Intel Pakistan in arranging trainings for science teachers, holding provincial and national science fairs all across Pakistan, including orientation workshops and providing resource persons, mentors and judges, cash awards for the winners, and logistic support wherever possible.

Sharing his thoughts at the occasion, Naveed Siraj, Country Manager Intel Pakistan said, “Intel wholeheartedly believes in the powerful impact of knowledge and its application within our community. HP Releases the Ubuntu Running Pavilion 20 Linux AIO

For all of the Ubuntu fans reading this, good news for you. HP has just released the Pavilion 20 Linux AIO all-in-one PC which comes with Ubuntu installed. A Windows 8 version is available as well. Amphibious All-terrain Car Vehicle Coming Soon to The US Market

DETROIT: The Quadski, a one-person all-terrain vehicle that doubles as a personal water craft, will be on sale in the United States next month for around $40,000.

New Zealand businessman Alan Gibbs, the 73-year-old founder of Gibbs Sports Amphibians, said he hopes the Quadski will be a stepping stone to selling full-size amphibious cars to the masses.

Powered by a BMW motorcycle engine that turns the wheels and also drives its waterjet propulsion, the Quadski’s backers say it is capable of 45 miles per hour (70 kmh) on both land and water, with just five seconds required to convert to each role.

The Quadski goes on sale next month in Florida and by the end of the year will also be available in Texas, the Great Lakes area, and the New York area, with California sales to follow next year. Gibbs wants to sell the Quadski around the world by 2014.

The price tag will keep sales volume low, Gibbs admitted to reporters at a press conference last Friday.

“Just like flat screen TVs and other things, the cost will go down,” said Gibbs, who added that Gibbs Sports Amphibians is targeting sales of 1,000 in its first year, produced at the company’s assembly plant in suburban Detroit.

Efforts to make mass-produced amphibious cars are not new but have not been wildly popular. The German-made Amphicar of the 1960s sold only 4,000, with modest performance both on land and the water.

The Quadski is not Gibbs Technologies’ first amphibious vehicle, but is the first to be sold commercially.

The best known venture so far is the larger Aquada, which was produced by Gibbs Technologies in Britain. The Aquada was a sports car on land and a water craft that was fast enough for Virgin Group founder Richard Branson to steer across the English Channel in record time for an amphibious vehicle in 2004.

But Gibbs Technologies was unable to sell any of the 40 Aquadas the company produced, because the maker of its engine went out of business, raising support issues, said Neil Jenkins, chairman of both parent company Gibbs Technologies and Gibbs Sports Amphibians.

And then there was the web of US regulations, said Jenkins, which may still keep Gibbs from realizing his dream of producing a mid-sized amphibious road-legal car. When the Aquada was presented for approval by US regulators, they did not know whether to consider it an on-road motor vehicle or a boat.

The solution, said Jenkins, would be to “find a new category of vehicle” that will allow for meeting both land and marine regulations.

Here is the first look of Maruti’s new Alto – Alto 800. The company is all set to launch its much-awaited budget car on Tuesday, October 16, 2012.

Visually, the Alto 800 is a completely new car. The headlights are mounted higher now and has black detailing inside. The grille is very Ford Figo-esque and has a chrome strip running right across the middle.

Rather than looking like an evolution from the previous Alto, the rear looks like it was inspired more from the A-star. What we don’t get however are those two little kinks on either side of the Suzuki badge.

2013 Maruti Alto 800 Interior:

The dashboard too is all new. It is raised at the centre to accommodate the new aircon vents. The side aricon vents are now circular. The aircon controls however are the same from the previous Alto, while the steering wheel is all new. The LXi variant now get a driver airbag and optional ABS.

Fuel Consumption:

Maruti is claiming a fuel economy of 22.7kmpl. The engine feels much smoother and more linear than before. There is ample low down torque and the typical three cylinder judder when starting from standstill has been eliminated. The car also feels much quicker than the older one.
