Kalau tidak tahu, hendaklah bertanya…

Abang Abu RAMAI usahawan baru beranggapan mereka tidak berupaya mendapatkan pandangan ataupun nasihat untuk memulakan perniagaan kerana mereka perlukan wang bagi membayar konsultan perniagaan.

Mereka juga beranggapan hanya syarikat besar sahaja yang mampu mempunyai pasukan penasihat dalam perniagaan mereka. Mereka juga malu bertanya dan inilah satu punca utama mengapa banyak perniagaan usahawan Melayu tidak dapat bertahan lama atau tidak dapat berkembang.

Sebenarnya, dalam menjadikan perniagaan anda lebih produktif, anda harus berusaha mendapatkan maklumat serta bantuan perniagaan.

AbangAbu, pada awalnya, menjadi anggota Dewan Perniagaan dan Perusahaan Melayu Singapura (DPPMS) di bawah rangkaian muda iaitu YEN@SMCCI. Di sinilah AbangAbu meraih banyak pengetahuan daripada anggota Dewan yang mantap perniagaannya.

Pemerintah juga membentuk Pusat Pembangunan Usahawan (EDC) di semua dewan perniagaan setempat bagi membantu usahawan mendapatkan sokongan dan bantuan yang ditawarkan pemerintah.

Dalam menjadi masyarakat peniaga yang produktif dan inovatif, anda harus bertanya.

Jika perniagaan anda berbentuk ‘One-man-Operation (OMO)’, jadikan rakan perniagaan yang lain sebagai ahli lembaga penasihat anda.

Jika anda mempunyai pekerja, pilih pekerja yang pada pandangan anda bermutu untuk dijadikan salah seorang ahli lembaga penasihat anda.

Mulakan perbincangan mengenai arah tuju perniagaan anda dan dapatkan pandangan mereka. Anda juga boleh menjadikan seorang penasihat kewangan sebagai ahli lembaga penasihat anda. Anda boleh menjadikan orang yang anda percayai dan mungkin kenalan anda sebagai mentor. Anda harus selidik latar belakang mereka sebelum menjemput mereka menjadi ahli lembaga penasihat perniagaan anda.

Beritahu mereka anda hanya menghubungi mereka jika hanya ada masalah yang berkenaan dengan mereka dan dapatkan izin mereka dahulu.

Anda juga boleh menceritakan perkembangan terbaru perniagaan anda dan mula bertanya tindakan yang harus dilakukan dalam sesuatu keadaan.

Nasihat seperti ini akan menjadikan anda mengambil tindakan perniagaan yang betul. Ini akan mengurangkan kadar risiko perniagaan anda. Malahan dengan adanya lembaga penasihat perniagaan anda sendiri, anda boleh berkembang dengan cepat dan dengan cara betul.

Jika ada tawaran, anda juga boleh menjadi ahli lembaga penasihat sesebuah perniagaan. Dengan ini, anda juga boleh pelajari pelbagai rahsia perniagaan serta memantapkan perniagaan anda sendiri.

AbangAbu juga dapat pelajari sesuatu yang baru dalam perniagaan dengan adanya lembaga penasihat sendiri serta menjadi ahli lembaga penasihat pada perniagaan orang lain.

Percayalah, anda akan berasa sangat gembira sekali jika anda dijemput menjadi ahli lembaga penasihat sesebuah perniagaan. Ini juga akan membuka peluang bagi anda menjadi ahli lembaga pengarah sekiranya perniagaan usahawan tersebut mencapai tahap yang lebih tinggi.

Personal Freedom = Financial Freedom ?       right or wrong?

After some thoughts AbangAbu believes that Personal Freedom > Financial Freedom . Why?

Personal Freedom is being happy , feeling great and full of gratitude. And that has nothing to do with money. Even though having financial freedom will give you personal freedom ,it is not necessarily that you must get financial freedom in order to feel happy.

Feeling happy is a state of mind and nothing to do with money. People don’t really understand this important secret. Happiness attract wealth and money.

So here i would like to share some points and statements for you to feel happy.

I will be sharing tips in order to get personal freedom starting with the happy feeling in you:

* Decide to feel happy within yourself.

* Don’t make your happiness dependent upon what happens during the day. Happiness is a direct choice without any dependency.

* Just choose happiness at any time no matter what is going on. it might be strange to think about it now but start to do it and you can feel it. You will be wired to feel happy for no absolute reason.

* Thinking of to be happy only after you suffered in an effort to earn greater success tomorrow is insane. Focus on doing what you have to do without feeling stress but full of happiness and joy.

* Start pursue all your dreams from a happy state, don’t let the assumptions that external events have to materialize in order to make you happy plays in your mind.

* Happiness or Misery is an option. They are both can be chosen by you to apply in the day’s event. Which option do you choose? AbangAbu choose to be happy.

One common question that been asked to me regards family run business is that ” how to make our kids involve in our business?”

Do you own a business? Do you have kids? Do you want them involved in your business? Do you want them to run it one day? Oh, and by the way, do you get a day older every day?

Hence my son Ahshik also started to run his business and also involved in my business people start asking abangabu questions.

The question was whether I did that on purpose, or what did I do to make that happen.

Ironically, given that I’m a planner by profession, this was not the result of long-term planning, at least not exactly.

And also it is this year that i started  to recognize that exit strategy or succession could be relevant. I’ve loved the business for so long that it had become second nature.  The thought of retirement was horrible, but I didn’t realize that I didn’t have to retire, just change jobs.

As it turned out, what did happen was the gradual recognition that I could change my job and put somebody else in charge, without retiring. I blog now, and speak and write and teach, while Ahshik learns and been marketing my company .  I have a team that work in my business. I work more hours than ever, but it’s a different job now and I love it. Nobody reports to me. What a great change. What a relief.

F: Find a Exit Way .You will exit eventually. Deal with it.

This is life, not just business. Even if you think you’ll never sell your company or go public, you’re not going to run it forever. So think about exit strategy, whether you like it or not.

A: Allow your spouse be in business with you .

This is a moot point of course if you’re both doing the same thing, but when it’s just one of the two parents doing the business, it’s still much better if two parents deal with children’s involvement, deciding how and when. In our case it was my business for the first decade but became our business as it grew. Even in the old days, though, when it was just my business, my wife was always in favor of the kids understanding where the money came from. And of course we recognize that you don’t always have the luxury of two parents of the same mind. It’s a luxury, not a necessity.

M: Mold them: Don’t plan your children into your business. It won’t work.

They’re supposed to do what they want, remember, not what you want? Or are we still in the 19th century (and it didn’t work that well then either)?

Trivia contest: name a major movie in which a central character was supposed to go into his or her parents’ business but didn’t. Answer: lots of right answers. It’s an archetype. It goes back to Abraham trashing his father’s store in the bible. Jesus was nicer about it, but he didn’t end up a carpenter. In Godfather, Don Corleone wanted Michael to be a senator, not the next don, but Michael made that decision, not his father. And for a more recent example, take Hiro in Heroes.

You have to hope they want to get involved, and maybe they will. Freedom to choose is essential. Working in the business has to be their choice, not yours.

I: Instill and Emphasize good education, and let them study what they want.

You want your children studying what interests them, not what interests you or what you think is good for the business.

I’m talking higher education here, of course, not Mrs. Azman reading class in the fourth grade. Let them study what they want and let those chips fall where they may. You don’t get good education by forcing it, and good education is way more important than the right subject. I hope you think that’s obvious.

Despite owning my own business , I encouraged my kids to major in things other than business. They should get an education first, learn business later. It’s a trade, not a discipline.

L: Let them try things. Make it an attractive option.

We like these people we raised, we’re happy to have them involved. Whenever we could we tried to make the workplace a pleasant place to be. This of course means everybody, in our case of a 40-employee company that includes the 37 who aren’t our grownup children.

People don’t always find their best place right away. Don’t push them into corners, let them experiment. Let them work with who they want, on what they want, and eventually they’ll end up in a good place.

Ultimately what’s at stake here, if things work out right, is you can end up with well educated hard working people who know where the business came from, and why, and want to take it to the best place for its future. That’s really a good thing.

My kids had to spend occasional weekend mornings follow me for talks and trainings. It didn’t hurt them to know where the money (what there was of it in the beginning) came from. My wife and I shared the work. We walked together to the post office when I was starting my business, checking for new customers. The kids came too. None of that hurt.

Bengkel maraton tingkat niaga Internet

Rosebi Mohd Sah MENGGUNAKAN Internet sebagai alat pemasaran baru untuk terus meningkatkan penjualan dan pendapatan bagi perniagaan baru mahupun perniagaan yang ada.

Bagi memanfaatkan sepenuh tujuan itu, Rangkaian Usahawan Muda Dewan Perniagaan dan Perusahaan Melayu Singapura (DPPMS) atau Yen@SMCCI akan mengadakan bengkel maraton tentang penggunaan e-book (buku elektronik) dan menggunakan Internet bagi tujuan meningkatkan penjualan perniagaan.

Bengkel sehari pada Ahad ini yang akan diadakan di bangunan Dewan, Jalan Pinang, disokong oleh syarikat perunding cara Internet, Ed Borhan Pte Ltd, dan Now Asia (Chicago Style LLP).

Bengkel itu akan menampilkan dua penceramah yang mahir dalam bidang Internet dan e-book - pemilik syarikat Ed Borhan Pte Ltd, Encik Nur Shaheed Borhan; dan pakar FaceBook dari Kedah, Encik Arshad atau lebih dikenali sebagai Master Arshad.

Berkerusi roda dan sebagai usahawan berusia 23 tahun, Encik Arshad belajar sendiri kursus-kursus Internet secara dalam talian selama setahun lebih untuk meningkatkan kemahirannya dalam pelbagai bidang Internet.

Dengan kemahiran teknologi maklumat (IT) itu, beliau, yang suka mengarang buku dalam bahasa Melayu di Malaysia, kini dapat menjual hasil karyanya menerusi Internet dan menjana sekitar RM13,000 ($5,400) sebulan.

‘Para peserta bengkel ini akan diajar bagaimana mencari pelbagai idea dan inspirasi untuk menulis e-book peribadi mereka sendiri dengan menggunakan sofwe e-book yang akan disediakan secara percuma semasa bengkel itu.

‘Satu lagi ilmu yang akan diajar kepada para peserta dalam bengkel itu ialah bagaimana memaksimumkan keuntungan perniagaan menerusi penggunaan pasaran Internet,’ kata Encik Abuayubul Ansari, Pengerusi Yen@SMCCI.

E-book peribadi dapat mengasingkan seseorang daripada pesaingnya. Ia boleh menggalakkan masyarakat awam supaya menjalankan perniagaan secara langsung dengan pemilik e-book peribadi itu.

Pelbagai maklumat dan tip seperti bagaimana untuk menentukan harga dan memasarkan e-book juga akan dikongsi dalam bengkel tersebut.

Bagi mereka yang tidak mempunyai komputer riba peribadi, bengkel itu telah mendapatkan syarikat penyewa komputer, Buttersnapz, untuk menyediakan komputer riba bagi para peserta semasa bengkel tersebut.

Seminar dalam bahasa Melayu itu akan diadakan dari 8.30 pagi hingga 8 malam dan disertakan dengan jamuan.

Bayaran $350 dikenakan bagi bengkel sepanjang hari itu. Namun Yen@SMCCI akan menyediakan cara pembayaran fleksibel bagi mereka yang memerlukan bantuan kewangan.

The Human Connection by My mentor to me.

For years, we’ve been hearing about how bad airline service
is, but I still recall a United employee who impressed me
enough to forgive the company, give them another try, and I
even bought her a small box of candy from the airport gift
shop! What did she do that was so impressive?

She listened, got Mary and me a seat on the next available
flight, and smiled while she did it.

She did her job with humility, friendliness and style. She
laughed with us, sympathized with our flight being delayed,
and took time to get us the best possible connections. It
took her no more than five minutes, but the sense that she
cared and that she was doing her best left a huge
impression.

United airlines is a big corporation, with thousands of
employees, and yet this woman in the Seattle airport
clearly valued our business. She treated us as friends; she
treated us with respect, kindness and concern.

I recently heard an ad for a large insurance company,
boasting that they do not use automated machines on their

Do you think of starting one? Than todays tip will be very useful for you.

AbangAbu would like to share some of the tips that will be useful in making your business on track. This is even very important during this period of economy where the crisis is still hanging there.

Many retailers have to close down because of unsustainable. This is infact a very serious for the whole economy. Retail industry is one of the major contributors of countries economy growth.

So, In order to make your retail business on track you have to really follow the RETAIL method.

R - Regular Forecast

You have to produce forecast monthly on cash flow. Analysis cash position and bank facilities. Make sure capital expenditure are identified well in advance. You only will go bust when you run out of money. Remember it!!!!

E - Examine

Examine and set realistic banking borrowing. You must reflect the true risk of the business and should not intended to achieve the cheapest cost of borrowing. If that is what you do than you might lose the confidence of your bankers.

T - Throw an Offer

Don’t hold on to old stock. old stock ties up working capital, so if it isn’t selling, discount the price and get rid of it. Throw and offer that they will never want to miss. If stock doesn’t sell this year, it’s unlikely to sell next.

A- Alert

Stay alert , If you know there is a problem, act on it and work out a solution that can represent to creditors. Don’t just assume you can trade your way out of problems, more remedial action may be required. Recognize that banks, in particular , don’t like shocks.

I - Investigate

Investigate the competition. Keep a watchful eye on competitors and if you are doing something different (including buying), make sure that you are right and they are wrong. Adjust your business model when required. (The topical example is the drive of the food retailers into non-food. It is very unlikely that a small business can compete on price. It needs to differentiate on other aspects).

L-Liquidity

Any retailer must sell above cost and overheads to survive while maintaining sufficient liquidity. For sales, it boils down to making sure that the right quantities of stock are in store, at the right time and at the right price. For costs and liquidity, the management of cash collection and constant monitoring of cost of sales and overheads are vital. I consider these areas risk management and measurement. Get them right, and problems can be identified and rectified at an early stage. Get them wrong, and you suffer.

HOW DO YOU THINK ABOUT MONEY?

Is it LUCK because you have not enough? Or a coincidence?

Studies show that financially successful people think differently ( psychology) —- compared to not successful ones.

here you go…

1) 80% or more of financial success is psychology and only 20% or less is “how to ” knowledge. Our mindset is very important and determines our thoughts and actions about money. If you believe you cant get out of debt , you wont . If you think you can , you will get out of debt.

A great lesson for many to learn and apply……….

2)You deserve to be rich ,full prosperity and abundance of wealth. Do you know we all are born to be happy and wealthy..

This might be difficult to believe for some of you but it is the fundamental truth……

3) Financial success is possible for you too. Just imagine you have enough money to enjoy a happy life. out of debt forever. No more worries about paying bills and debts. Never have to work unless you want to.

How would that make you feel? Just keep that feeling with you always.

4) Learn from those who made it. Dont find your financial success way by trial and error. It takes time , energy and might make you worry and depressive. Be smart and use the experiences and strategies of those who made it. Learn it and utilize it in controlling your financial life!

5) Use money as a tool to solve a problem. What is money means to you?  For some its the source of all problems and for some it is the key to solve our problems. Realize that money is just a tool . Free yourself and use money as a tool , in stead of the money using you!!!!!

These are some thoughts for you to think and apply….. in your journey to be financially successful.

Here goes the interview……

1)What kind of business do you have? What inspired you to become an Entrepreneur business owner?

I have a tuition agency which I call MyTutor Agency. I was a school teacher and is currently doing free-lance teaching. In 2006, when I was doing part-time teaching scheme in a mainstream school, I realized I needed extra cash to pay for my son’s chemotherapy treatment. I tumbled upon a tuition company which taught me the ropes of doing this business at a low cost of using it’s database. I was excited but the business comes with it’s own set of challenges. What’s important to me though is, this business does not take too much of my time and it does not give me any pressure…..I do it “Just for fun and to help others”.

This business is my side-line which could very well be my next BIG THING!

2)Did you need to have a certain mindset to achieve success?

It’s the hunger to earn more and live in abundance. Of course, there are setbacks that can put you down and pull you back from moving forward but I get composed fast enough to get back in business. I’ve learnt not to dwell on failures but to pursue successes at all times.

3)Have you noticed certain advantages to being an entrepreneur business owner?

Being my own boss, it’s up to me to decide how much earnings I want to get for myself. If I need extra pocket money for a period of time, I will work hard to achieve my goal.

For example, if I need $3000 this month for a vacation 3 months later, I’ll make plans to get that by setting achievable daily targets. This is my side income anyway but to set a goal and be able to achieve that, to me, the feeling is ….FABULOUS.

4)Is it difficult to get financing for businesses? If so why and are there any solutions?

Mine is a small scale business so I do not need to get financing help from anywhere. I can start this business with NOTHING, just guts and that winning mentality.

5)Did you have a mentor to help you get started?

Initially I did not. So for 3 year, my business was left unattended and I had very low morale and no intention to revive the business. I read so many books on self-motivation and building own business but it never happened. I was high in spirit and hopes but don’t know where to start. So, on retrospect, those times reading and building castles in the air becomes pointless and a waste of time to the point that I thought all these rich people are saying are pure crap.Talks of the capitalists!

Things took a change after attending Abang Abu’s MAP untuk KAYA in early 2009.

Abang Abu’s simple tips stick vividly in my mind until today. I like his theory of making $1 grow most. During the course, I was skeptical that a $1 can multiply exponentially. To me, that was IMPOSSIBLE. Now, looking back, it was possible and believable that $1 can multiply with certain strategy, effort and God’s help, mix into one. From that, I learnt that Abang Abu is trying to make us see that intangible existence can be a tangible achievement if we see the big picture of knowing your business.

6)Approximately how much money did you invest before your business became profitable?

Not much. I registered my company in 2006 with little money and then, I engaged a friend’s help to secure the domain name and do up a simple website at about $300. Twice a month, I’ll put up advert in the papers. That’s all. I get at least 20 times the profit from there.

7)What resources were most helpful to you when you were starting your business?

I come into the business with nearly 10 years of teaching experience.

That in itself is a plus point for parents to believe the kind of advice or consultation I give them as well as to tutors with regards to making the tuition effective and parents money spent worthwhile. I live by my belief in keeping the “edupreneur” spirit in me alive. I also have a committed and experienced pool of tutors whom I can rely on.

8)What ways have you found to be most effective in marketing your product or service to get sales?

The best marketing tool I have is my 800 pool of Facebook friends of whom, some are my clienteles, be it MyTutors or tutees. I believe that if you do a good job, clients will come back to you and spread the good word about your services and this will live by many years to come. I attribute 60% of my sale profits to this group of clients.

9)What tips can you give others who want to embrace their dream but, don’t have the confidence or feel they don’t have what it takes to succeed?

It’s totally ridiculous to believe that only those who can “ra-ra” and “who-ha” will survive in the business industry. There are many “Jutawan Senyap” lingering around us. You may choose what you want to become. All it takes is the first step to achieve success and the formula will run in your head somehow. If you follow this believe with me, I believe ANYBODY CAN BE RICH!

10)How do you manage juggling the responsibilities of being a entrepreneur?

Doing tuition coordination is a hobby. I treat is as spending my time wisely since I get to earn from it. Most people pay for their hobby but I get money to do my hobby and the feeling’s SUPERB! What’s interesting is, my 8 year old daughter is into this business. She gets to earn by helping me to work on the database following my instructions. She has been so successful to the point that my other 3 kids, aged 7, 5 and 4 years old are green-eyed and eager to learn this simple rope as well.

Sometimes, I have to crack my head a little when the request is complicated, something happens to the tutor or tutee during the course of the tuition or when there are no tutors willing to take up an offer. Time is money in this trade since once late, I’ll lose the business. So, I have a personal SOP for closing the deals.

11)What’s next for you?

I intend to strengthen MyTutor’s pool and only maintain the tried and tested tutors. With the great interest I see in my children in doing this business, I want to make this a family hobby which brings in side income in multiples.

I have plans to produce a book soon, insyaAllah. This book is about how my family is able to come out from the ordeal of hardship to the point of poverty where we were deeply in debt with the hospital of $60,000 when one of my son was diagnosed with cancer of the blood, leaukemia in 2004. It tells about the resilience we can be to overcome hardship and turn it into a life lesson and fight to pursue life to the best we can.
