Daily Forecast, Question....

Hi Mike,

My wife and I watch you at 4:30 AM. We have noticed that temperatures change typically by ~2 degrees upward between your first review of weather temperatures and your subsequent review. What are we missing?

Hi Tom,

I'm guessing you are seeing the Day Planner which shows the temperatures at 8am, noon and 4pm during the first weathercast and the forecasted high temperatures during the second weathercast. The difference is the time. Our high temperatures usually peak between 2:30 and 3:30pm.

Bay Area Rain Totals

Our latest wet weather maker was a decent storm by normal standards. Unfortunately, it was no match for our growing rainfall deficit.

The storm spit in half before reaching the Bay Area this morning. That's why the totals are slightly lower than I hoped.

Freeze Warning Tonight

The National Weather Service issued a FREEZE WARNING for most of the Bay Area from 11 PM today until 8 AM tomorrow.

* Temperatures: 25° TO 35° in the urban corridor of San Francisco and San Jose. Inland valleys will be even cooler, 20° to 25°.

* Impacts: Areas of black ice may develope, especially on bridges and overpasses. Sensitive plants may parish. Please take outdoor pets into consideration during these cold temperatures. Exposed pipes might want to be wrapped.

Palo Alto Really That Cold?!?!

Are the Palo Alto temperatures taken in a well or something? Can
it really be 10 degrees colder than in Mt. View?

Many examples. We
live in South Palo Alto and the temperatures never seem to fit us?

You can zoom to street level and see where the temperatures are taken.

The closer you are to the bay water, the warmer your lows will be because water looses and gains temperature at a much slower pace than land. Most of this winter Mountain View has been warmer than it's surrounding neighbors thanks to the clear sky, light winds and dry air allowing other areas away from the moderating bay waters to cool more.

Also, the closer you are to the hills/mountains the more likely you are susceptible to cold air drainage. Cold air is heavier and sinks into the valleys at night. The deeper the valley, the colder it gets.

Multiple Wedding Rings...Fashion Statement?

Hi Jay,

Nice observation of my forgetfulness.

I stopped wearing my ring at the fitness center. It was getting damaged. Sometimes I forget to put it back on.

We installed a new remote control for the weather maps that looks like a key chain. It changes the weather maps. To keep from dropping it, I slip it over my finger. Guess it looks like a ring on tv.

Towers Making Delta Dangerous?

The Contra Cost County Department of Conservation and Development is reviewing its regulations of meteorological towers after the death of an agricultural pilot who crashed into one on a Delta island in January. The Federal Aviation Administration requires that towers 200 feet and taller be painted in bright aviation colors and lit. Towers shorter than 200 feet fall under the purview of local governments.

In June, the FAA made several recommendations for meteorological towers to avoid future tragedies. It recommended that shorter towers be painted from top to bottom with alternating bands of orange and white and have eight orange marker balls, as well as brightly painted sleeves or flags, attached to the wires that hold them upright.

Seriously Dry Rain Season

Welcome to 2012!! We are at the middle point of our rain year.

Right now, San Jose has received only 31 percent of our average rainfall for July through December, 1.55 inches. The average is 5.01 inches. This time last year we were at 103 percent, 5.07 inches. The 31 percent is the lowest in the Bay Area.

Right now, San Francisco has received only 37 percent of our average rainfall for July through December, 3.37 inches. The average is 9.11 inches. This time last year we were at 128 percent, 11.68 inches.

Right now, Livermore has received only 33 percent of our average rainfall for July through December, 1.91 inches. The average is 5.81 inches. This time last year we were at 111 percent, 6.47 inches.

Babs and Lucia are a wonderful pair of Guinea Pigs and are the best of friends. They recently paid a visit to Santa when he stopped by the Marin Humane Society for pet photos and told him that they would love to find a new home for the holidays!

Guinea Pigs are active animals so you’ll want to make sure to provide them with as large a cage as possible. They will need a couple of boxes/tunnels to hide in as well, but make sure they still have space to exercise. The bulk of their diet should be grass hay such as timothy and orchard grass, along with clean, fresh water. For the lucky family who adopts this festive pair, Babs and Lucia will be cheerful companions for years to come.

Weekend Hiking Forecast

I know it's still almost 3 weeks away but I was wondering if there's any way to tell right now if we'll have some storm system passing that day over our area or if I'll be lucky enough and the weather stays dry?

Hi Alex,

While it’s possible, a forecast nearly two weeks out can change rapidly from one day to the next. We are mostly looking at trends more than anything else.

Our medium range computer forecasting models reach 16 days. I first looked at your request December 1st. At that time, the trend was dry. Any storms were going to stay north in Oregon and Washington. Today, the models show a storm sliding south from the Gulf of Alaska with showers spreading across the Bay Area from Friday evening through Saturday evening. Right now, it begins as rain. By sunset Saturday, it will be cold enough for snow down to 3000’.

Best advice, stay tuned… The forecast will be more complete the closer we get to your date.

Freezing Temperatures Tonight

FROST ADVISORY tonight for the East Bay Valleys from 1AM - 9AM. Sensitive plants need to be protected. If not, the may sustain some damage. Tonight will not be a killing frost as temperatures will dip to 30 - 35°.

FREEZE WARNING tonight for the North Bay Valleys along with the Carquinez Strait and Delta from 1 AM - 9AM. This could be a killing freeze for isolated areas when temperatures drop to 28° or cooler for 2 to 4 hours. Along with sensitive plants, find a warm shelter for your pets and make sure exposed pipes are free of water or wrapped.
