Alberta Freestyle Skiing invites pipe and slopestyle athletes to the Canada Post Freestyle Frenzy Halfpipe & Slopestyle competition in Calgary January 6-8. This Canadian Open Tour event has obtained Bronze status with AFP and is the first of three events in a new national tour to develop Canada’s halfpipe and slopestyle skiing talent. There is training at Canada Olympic Park on Friday morning from 9:30-noon; halfpipe competition is Saturday; slopestyle is Sunday.

Book your accommodations by Dec. 24 to get great rates at the 4 Points Sheraton West.

Bow Valley Freestyle Club and Norquay were exceptional hosts for the Alberta Winter Games Qualifier on Dec. 16-18. One hundred and one athletes ages 11-15 competed in slopestyle and moguls with Norquay’s hill manager Andre forerunning each day! We had blue skies Saturday and plenty of new snow Sunday to make the mogul course fantastic. Best scores in slopestyle belong to Brayden Tritter of Calgary Freeriderz and Bryana Cressey from Central Alberta Freestyle; champs in moguls were Ryan Portello from Southern Alberta Freestyle and Alison Brown from Jasper Freeride. Congratulations to the 64 athletes who will advance to the 2012 Alberta Winter Games with freestyle skiing in Tawatinaw Valley February 9-12.

Here is a brief overview of the current CFSA coaching courses available this spring.

The TSM 1 & 2 course is completely new to the coaching stream detailing the current World Cup technical content that is being taught at the highest level of mogul skiing. Upon completion of both technical modules, it is the equivalent of the “old level 2 moguls”. These on snow courses cover core mechanics and base technical key elements to develop skier and freestyle coach. We have entered into a completely new era of coaching material from across the spectrum in 2010, in all disciplines. TSM 1 & 2 will deepen your knowledge and broaden your ability to develop your athlete’s.

The A1 & A2 courses are very new and current for acrobatics. These courses cover a range from entry level trampoline through off axis rotations and flipping off axis, as well as base level traditional aerials. With the completion and certification of the A1 & A2courses, the CFSA license coach is permitted to teach entry level tramp (A1 certified). With completion and certification of the A2 course, the coach is permitted to teach inverts covered in the A2 material(A2 certified). Both of these certifications cover coaching instruction on trampoline.

These new courses are a must for any coach new to the CFSA system as well as furthering education of established coaches from previous years in the system. I highly recommend all coaches from all levels to attend as we help to improve an already solid Alberta Freestyle.

See you on the slopes!
