Before Col. (Dr.) Amitabh Thapliyal began pursuing photography with passion and purpose, he dedicated 34 years of distinguished service to the nation. An alumnus of GSVM Medical College, he served as a medical officer in the Indian Army and rose to the rank of Colonel, commanding three key military hospitals, including a field hospital in the North East.

His military career took him across some of India's most extraordinary landscapes—long before he started capturing them through the lens. From the icy heights of Siachen to the coastal serenity of Kanyakumari, and from the vast salt deserts of Kutch to the mist-laden hills of Arunachal Pradesh, he experienced the country's remarkable diversity firsthand.

The Creative Journey:

Following his retirement, Amitabh transformed his lifelong passion for travel into a dedicated pursuit of photography. Determined to build a strong artistic and technical foundation, he sought guidance from accomplished photography mentors who played a pivotal role in shaping his creative vision. Since then, he has remained a committed learner, regularly participating in workshops, refining his technical expertise, and continually expanding his artistic horizons. His primary interests lie in nature, landscape, and travel photography, where his extensive travels and disciplined approach enable him to portray the beauty of places with authenticity and sensitivity.

His dedication to the craft has earned him the prestigious ALMG distinction from the Lens Maestro Group.

When he is not chasing the perfect light or engaging with the photography community, he enjoys spending time on the golf course, where he applies the same focus and precision that have defined both his military and photographic journeys.

Dr. Pankaj Agarwal, MBA, Ph.D., is a multifaceted personality—an accomplished academician and a passionate photographer. With over 25 years of experience as a faculty member in leading management institutes, Dr. Agarwal has made significant contributions to the field of education. However, beyond the world of classrooms and lectures, lies his creative side—his deep love for photography.

Born and based in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, Dr. Agarwal's interest in photography began in childhood, sparked by a curiosity to observe and capture the world around him. This casual interest transformed into a serious passion in 2018, during a visit to the renowned Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary. The breathtaking sight of birds in their natural habitat awakened a deeper connection with nature and inspired him to explore wildlife and nature photography more intentionally.

In 2019, he purchased a high-zoom bridge camera, allowing him to get closer to nature’s wonders. As his interest grew, he sought to improve his craft by learning from seasoned photographers. Attending workshops led by Dr. Pankaj Sharma and Dr. Kamran introduced him to the technical aspects of photography—such as camera settings, composition, lighting, and post-processing—which led to a noticeable improvement in the quality and depth of his images.

Since then, Dr. Agarwal has committed to photographing life almost daily. Whether using a mobile phone, a point-and-shoot camera, or a DSLR, he believes the essence of photography lies not in the equipment, but in the eye of the photographer. His work ranges from vivid bird portraits and serene natural landscapes to candid shots of everyday life, people, and moments that often go unnoticed.

To share his passion and connect with fellow nature lovers, Dr. Agarwal publishes a quarterly e-magazine titled “Birds in Bareilly by Pankaj”. Distributed free of cost, this digital magazine features his latest bird photography, often accompanied by brief write-ups that reflect his observations and experiences in the field. It has gained appreciation from bird watchers, photography enthusiasts, and locals who enjoy seeing their environment through his artistic lens.

Recently, expanding his artistic pursuits into a professional venture, Dr. Agarwal launched Shutter Vibes Photography. This new initiative focuses on baby and maternity photo shoots—capturing the innocence, warmth, and emotional depth of life’s most cherished milestones. Through Shutter Vibes, he brings the same sensitivity and detail that characterize his nature photography into personal, family-focused storytelling.

I feel extremely happy to share that our blog, “Abhivyakti: Expression through Photography”, has completed 16 successful years of its voyage. This blog began in 2009 with the goal of sharing the knowledge of Photography among the art enthusiasts. We started our journey with various sections, like Learning, Photo Feature, On Project, Great Masters, Story behind the Picture, Profile, Youth Gallery, etc. Later Dashboard and Event sections were also added to the blog in order to expand the sphere of knowledge. Our chief aim has always been to provide platform to the beginners who have never got the opportunity to showcase their talent. Besides, we aim at sharing the works of the Great Masters so that the novice may have opportunity to learn from them.

The readers and followers work as the strength of any blog. A big number of readers from India and abroad have associated with our blog. From a tender age of 16, Manish Khattry’s creative brilliance found its way into the pages of a leading daily newspaper through his cartoons. What began as a youthful passion soon transformed into a lifelong devotion to the artistic world.

In 1994, he pioneered a revolution in Indian art by introducing the computer as a recognized medium of artistic expression. Training over 3,000 students, he guided them to showcase their digital artworks in prestigious galleries, including the esteemed Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi.

Among all artistic pursuits, photography became his true calling—a medium through which he could immortalize the timeless essence of Banaras. With a keen eye for antiquity and an unwavering passion for storytelling, he has spent over a decade capturing the rich cultural heritage of Varanasi. A gold medallist in Master of Fine Arts from Banaras Hindu University, he also contributed to academia as a visiting faculty at the Department of Applied Arts, BHU. His photographic contribution to the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ campaign earned him a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Normante has organised nineteen personal photography exhibitions till date and has participated in many group shows held both in Lithuania and abroad. Since 2009 she has been a member of the club of photographers of nature Green Umbrella (Lithuania) and AMoL (A member of Photographic Association Master of Light). George Digalakis is an accomplished photographer, specializing in Fine Art, minimal photography, through which he tries to convey the beauty of nature, with his own distinctive, black and white language. His passion for photography is harmoniously combined with his love for travel and the exploration of new landscapes and places, stimuli for the creation of his unique minimalist world.

He was born and raised in Athens, Greece. A medical doctor by profession, he still lives and works in Athens. Although he has been involved in many hobbies, such as chess and diving, it took him forty years to discover his true passion for the art of photography.

His first contact with photography was back in 1974, when he received a “Nettar” as a gift from his father. Since then, the camera became an integral part of his daily life. But it was only in 2009 that he found the necessary free time to study photography seriously, under the supervision of Tasos Schizas. He became acquainted with classic and contemporary photographers and realized this medium would offer him a getaway from reality and enable him to express his inner world. Photography proved to be a permanent source of inspiration and life-changing experience.

Born in a country with more than 1000 islands, he developed a close relationship with the sea, and he feels that this connection is the driving force behind his love for seascapes. George rarely tries to capture the moment and finds that by ignoring reality he can best convey his inner vision and underlying emotions. Subjects that convey feelings of loneliness, isolation, and melancholy are his preferred themes, with bare trees in the water, old piers, and interesting rocks being recurring themes. Purity of space and thought, vast waterscapes, sense of echoing space, and the removal of the distracting elements, characterize his work.

He does not try to tell stories, but to convey emotions. For him the point of art has never been to make a truthful copy of reality, but to create art that could help the viewer to escape the surface of reality we everyday live in and discover emotions and feelings. He sees the use of black and white as a step away from reality, and with the use of the long exposure technique, introduces the sense of passing time, eliminating the details from the background, thus highlighting his subjects.

Minimalism, both as an art movement and a philosophy of life, has influenced his work. The influence from minimalist photographers, such as Michael Kenna can be clearly seen in his seascapes. On the other hand, the street photography of Harry Callahan and Giacomo Bruneli, with the extensive use of dark tones, highlighting the melancholic mood of their work, has clearly left an imprint on his urban imagery.

Currently, he has been involved as an educator, teaching the techniques of long exposure, landscape photography to photographers from all over the world. He is organizing workshops in some of the most interesting locations around Greece and has published the tutorial “The Essential Guide to Fine Art Photography”. Educational articles have been published on LEMAG Magazine, Dejavu Magazine, Minimalism Magazine, etc.

George has won many awards, but the most important moment in his career was his distinction in the Px3 Paris competition, back in 2014. This award helped him realize that his work has the quality and uniqueness to stand in the international photography scene.

He had five solo exhibitions in Ioannina 2015, Athens 2018, Thessaloniki 2018, Athens 2022, and Sofia (Bulgaria) 2022, and has participated in more than fifty group exhibitions around the world. His work has been recognized in Greece, winning the prestigious "Hermes" Award of the Hellenic Photographic Society and in many international competitions, such as Px3, Sony World Photography Award, Siena Awards, TIFA Foto Awards, APOY, Minimalist Photography Awards, FAPA, SITTP, ND Awards, BnW Photo Awards. He has been published in various magazines and sites, including LensWork magazine, Zoom Magazine, LEMAG magazine, FEM, 1x.com, Digital Camera, Shot Magazine, Blur Magazine, Dodho Magazine, Yatzer, My Modern Met, B&W Minimalism Magazine, Schwarzweiss Magazine. His site has been Listed on the "Top 25 Black and White Photography Blogs & Websites for Black & White Lovers" by Feedspot.

In 2020 George was one of the 6 photographers included in the documentary series “Hunters of Eternity” for the Greek television, while in 2021 he has been awarded the title “Photographer of the Year” at Visions International Photo Awards, Toulouse, France.

Promising photographer Amit Sah is no more. He left to the heavenly abode today morning (18.09.2023). His demise is a great loss to the world of photography. He will always be remembered due to his beautiful pictures of Uttarakhand.

Born in Nainital (India), Amit Sah was a dedicated photographer. Since he grew up in a town which was surrounded by magnificent nature, he had an inborn desire to capture the scenic beauty of his native place. He initially used to click with his mobile phone camera. This was July, 2013 when one of his pictures was published in a reputed News Paper. Amit got a big appreciation from photographers’ fraternity for this picture. Hereafter he started photography seriously. Very soon he participated in a photography contest and he received first prize from the Finance Minister of Uttarakhand State. This added wings to Amit’s passion.

Amit had got many awards in photography competitions. Around 200 pictures clicked by him got place in esteemed publications. One of his pictures was printed on a poster of United Nations on the occasion of International Mountain Day. His pictures portray the beauty of nature so truthfully that the viewers get spellbound. Amit believed, “This is our vision which results into good pictures, and everybody possesses his/her own vision”

Amit was fond of trekking and biking. He had visited many beautiful places of India. He was a good actor as well and had acted in two shot films.

He is the first Indian to get Two Masters from world bodies of photography in Nature photography. He has been invited as a judge in many a National and International photography salon. He was one of the Jury Members in national level photography competition organized by Photo Division I & B ministry, New Delhi.
Many of his pictures have been published in international magazines, catalogs, newspapers, brochures, and books. His pictures have graced all the guidebooks brought out by “Outlook traveler” and “Today- Travel Plus “Magazine. WWF, BEML, BHEL, MICO, MCF, Canara Bank and many more Calendar spreads.
Satish conducts Nature and Wildlife Photography Workshops for the enthusiasts. He has so far organized 14 workshops in wildlife in the jungles of Bandhavgarh, Kanha, Sattal, Munsiary, Bandipur, Kaziranga and Ranathambore National parks.
Andhra Pradesh Photography Academy has published a book on The Wildlife Photographic journey of Satish. He had lot of interest in Photography since his young age, and this made him to take up Cinematography, and he passed out with a distinction of 3^rd Rank.

He is a prolific exhibitor in many National and International Salons, thereby, winning many Top awards, and thus became India’s most famous ‘Wildlife Photographer’. Till date, he has won 978 National and International awards.
During the last Pandemic,2020-2021, in one year, he delivered 23 talks across India, on various topics, and showed his award-winning images, which has become a rage now. He guides Youngsters and share his knowledge on Photography, without any secrecy, is what people like most about Satish.
Currently he is the President of Youth Photographic society of Bangalore. The Karnataka Lalith kala academy has awarded him the title - “state artist” award also.

Ashok Dilwali, aged 78 years is a Professional Photographer since 1971. He has been immersed in photography since his childhood, since his father late Mr. B K Dilwali owned two premier photographic studios in New Delhi i.e., Kinsey Bros., (established in 1905) and Shimla Studio (estab1ished 1931). After schooling from Modern School, he graduated in Commerce from Shri Ram College of Commerce and then went to join A F Ferguson & Co to qualify as a Chartered Accountant.

He entered the profession in 1971 and modernized his studio specializing in Studio Portraiture, Outdoor Assignments, Color Laboratory and allied fields of photography like printing and processing. He then developed his hobby of trekking in the Himalayas which has made him a household name for his expertise on landscapes of the Himalayas.

He has produced thirty-eight books so far and work is in progress on two new publications. In all these years he has contributed to several newspapers, magazines and journals, both articles as well as photographs. His forte remains landscapes. He is a member of India International Centre, India Habitat Centre, Indian Mountaineering Foundation. He is a member of Royal Photographic Society of UK, and is a Fellow of this Society as well.

He has also been exhibiting his work at various avenues and has guided many young aspirants and initiated them in this field of landscape work. National Book Trust requested him to write a book for school and college students to acquaint them with basics of photography. The book has met with much acclaim and is titled "All About Photography". He owns a large variety of camera equipment and is now using digital cameras of both Nikon and Canon brands. Today he is very active and is a guide to many who wish to learn the craft and art of his field and shoots for the pure pleasure of photography. His crowning glory was receipt of “Lifetime Achievement Award” by the Govt. of India in 2019. In 2022, he received the Life Award from IIID (Institute of Indian Interior Designers)

Archana Deshpande Joshi was 38 when she got her DSLR camera. She says, she wanted one at the age of 18 but her father couldn't buy it then. All these years, while clicking her art work for various publication and NGOs, she used DSLR owned by husband. She also did self-study on rolling, clicking and developing negative photos. Earlier, when she was spreading her art work on FB, she came in touch with Mr Vinayak Puranik who had history of Digital Photography. He had an idea of publishing a book on photography since 1975. Looking at the pics of "Chhandmitra" book, Vinayak offered book writing on photography to Archana. She was interested but was not ready. She took course in Digital Photography, learned the art and then gave it shot on writing. Till date she has written 3 books on Photography. Names ARTOGRAPHY, PHOTOMANTRA & CLICKTRICK in Marathi. All books were her weekly columns in Lokmat Thane; they later got published as books by Diamond books, Pune. With APAC they train artists, assist them, give them platform, and conduct International level Photography and art contests.

Message to Readers: "Don't think anything as small. People told her early in her career that Art would not bring her identity and money. But she proved them wrong. All should encourage the artist within and outside and give them their due respect. You may not know, that artist and his form of art will touch sky one day."

She has to her credit a number of reputed of Awards, Recognitions, Mentions at national and international levels. Her talent has been recognized by many prominent TV channels (Zee, Mimarathi, Sam Marathi etc.), News papers (Loksatta, Lokmat, Lokprabha, Gruhashobhika, Punyanagari and Saamna, to name a few) and by various renowned national brands. She has been invited to judge many interschool contests of drawing, painting, art & craft in Mumbai.

She completed her basic academic education from Mumbai, later earned a Diploma in Commercial arts from the reputed Nirmala Niketan College of applied arts in 1994. She has served in the field of art & craft too. Her first activity book "Chhandmitra” was selected for Sarv Shikshan Abhiyan for Maharashtra municipal corporation school syllabus for year 2018-19. More than 30,000 copies of this book were printed and distributed to local schools of Maharashtra.

Born in a family of jewellers, Umesh Gogna was inclined towards arts since his childhood. After completing his post-graduation, he started helping his father in his family business while also working on his Ph. D thesis on ancient Indian jewellery. He needed good quality photographs of jewellery for his thesis. In order to get good images for his thesis, he decided to buy a camera and try photographing the jewellery himself. He bought a second-hand Pentax camera kit, thus started his journey as a photographer.

After some disappointments, and a lot of hard work, he was able to get good images for his thesis. After a phase of time, he discovered that he had fallen in love with photography and he started spending more and more time with this form of art. He upgraded his camera kit, brought studio lights and even set up a small studio in his house. Soon people started asking him to photograph their jewellery-products and he was happy to oblige them. As he loved travelling, he started travelling to new destinations with his camera. During these trips he got fine images of different places.

When he realized that he was devoting more time to his photography than to his family business, he decided to turn professional and devote all his time to photography. It was a difficult decision as he was essentially leaving a secure business for the uncharted waters of professional photography. But now, after so many years, he is glad that he made that choice. Photography has always been the main passion of his life and he feels especially lucky and blessed to be able to devote all his time to it.

Most of his professional work is in the field of handicraft and jewellery, stone and the hospitality industry. Apart from his professional work he also does a lot of travel and nature photography. Over the years he has spent a lot of time in documenting the cultural architectural and natural heritage of Rajasthan and the Himalayas. The wilderness and the open paces of the desert and the mountains attract and inspire him.

After spending many years as a professional photographer, he felt that he should give back something to the profession of photography. One area where he felt he could contribute was by educating aspiring photographers about the science and art of photography. He started helping young photographers by conducting workshops. He has accomplished more than 250 workshops of photography till date. For seven years (2008-2014) he conducted workshops for Canon India as a mentor. He is currently a brand ambassador and mentor of Sony Alpha. Now a days his Astro photography with photography expeditions, and his master classes are very popular.

He has spent a lot of time in documenting the cultural & architectural heritage of Rajasthan and the Himalaya. His works have been published in several books on these subjects. Rajasthan’s royalty, fairs, festivals & colours are framed in the coffee table books of Pali, Jalore & Jhalawar by him. Some of his other books are lined up to be published. Today Umesh Gogna is a well-known figure in the field of photography. He is among the jury members of renowned photography contests. Many organizations have appointed him as their mentor. A number of his photographs have featured in reputed publications. He is committed to help the beginners forever.

"Rakesh Syal, an ace lensman had inner instinct for dimensions, textures, light and expressions. Born and brought up in Ludhiana, he was among the most talented photographers of his country. An artist by instinct he picked up his camera in 1975. Deeply fascinated by the world of photography he never looked back and made a mark in the field of portraiture, still life, product, industrial, fashion, food, interiors and wedding photography. Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away …that’s what Rakesh Syal ji thought. His works are remarkable for their technical and formal mastery. Still life by Rakesh Syal is class apart. His compositions carry a signature style of his own and are from the genesis of an idea. He was seven only years old when he shifted to Bareilly with his parents. Around 40 years of his stay at Bareilly have passed. He has been doing photography for more than 20 years. He enjoys photographing the historical places of his region and he has done a lot of work in this field. The ancient buildings of his city have attracted him since his student life. Few old buildings located in the city are very important in terms of their beautiful architecture. This time he is with us with a few beautiful pictures of ancient churches of Bareilly. He admits, “the Churches located in my city always fascinated me. I could not photograph them in my student life as I did not possess a camera. But later the things changed. I, after completing my studies and then after making my career in medical line wished to spend some of my time for photography. I started clicking the beauty of my city. My childhood fascination for churches inspired me to photograph them thoroughly.” He further adds, “not only the churches but religious places of every religion attract me deeply. Visiting these places always gives a feeling of being close to the positivity and to a divine power as well.”

According to Dr. Kamran the light of early morning and late evening is always ideal for photographing churches, since during these hours the divinity at its peak can be felt and the same can be experienced in our pictures. Secondly, our presentation should be purely unbiased and original.

Born (February, 1977) and brought up in a small town of Punjab, Ashok Sikri shifted to Rishikesh later and did his higher studies in commerce from a college there. He is a businessman by profession. In 2018 he decided to buy a DSLR camera just to click quality family pictures and capture precious moments of life. He had no clue about any technical aspects of photography as they seemed very heavy for him. Gradually he got inclined towards photography seriously and decided to join a local photography club to get a knack for photography.

He started going on weekly photo walks with his club members. One of his photo walks was at Raja Ji Tiger Reserve with his fellow photographers. It was an amazing experience and after the walk he realised how vivid the wildlife is and It's just not visually epic but also teaches a lot of lessons to nature lovers. Since then, he started his journey of capturing the wildlife. Ashok Sikri is a nature lover and is on a path to capture it. His works have been published in multiple reputed magazines like Chillz and have also been featured by Nat Geo, BBC and Nikon.

Ashok is a hard working photographer who believes in perfection. His pictures are perfect examples of wildlife photography due to their subject material, composition and dramatic effect of light.

Dr. Kapil Agrawal is an ophthalmic surgeon by choice and a traveler and photographer by passion. He did his MBBS and MS in ophthalmology from KGMC Lucknow and has been practicing in Bareilly for the last 27 years.

His photography journey is like an adventure. He fell in love with this passion when he was 11 years old. In 1978, his aunt, who lived in the USA, gifted him a Yashica 35 camera along with a few colour rolls. It was a fully manual camera and at that time, he didn’t know the ABCD of photography. He had no idea about the technique, exposures, compositions and ISO. The first book he read on photography was ‘How to Take Good Pictures’ from Kodak. It provided him with the knowledge about the various camera settings, compositions and use of natural light for enhancements. He started to apply that knowledge to his shoots. With his first camera, he could not get very experimental, as processing colour films in those times was very difficult and highly expensive. He used to send his rolls to the USA for processing. He would get to see his photographs only after 3-4 months of clicking them and in the meanwhile, he would lose track of the various camera settings that he used while taking those photographs.

After a few years of using Yashica 35, he moved on to Olympus 50. He bought his first digital Sony camera in 2004 and then bought his Canon DSLR in 2013. His photographs have been recognized at different levels. He was the winner of ‘All India Medical College Photo Competition’ twice and several other of his photos were featured in various travel websites.

Travelling and exploring new places is Dr. Kapil’s other passion and photography complements it perfectly. He loves travel and landscape photography. Himalayas fascinate him to no end and provide him the opportunity to enjoy their serenity and photograph them in a hundred ways. Ladakh is his favorite, because of its extraordinary landscapes. He has travelled to more than 30 countries worldwide and explored their eternal beauty, history and culture. Italy, particularly, charmed him enormously due to its rich heritage buildings. It gave him an immense pleasure to shoot its historic sites.

Dr. Kapil states, “I am an amateur photographer and due to my professional responsibilities, I have never been able to take any class on photography or attend any workshops. Born in Delhi in 1961, Raj Kumar Jain has academic background in pharmaceuticals with vast experience of civil constructions. He is fortified with passionate persuasion of Astronomy/Astrology and Photography.

He is persuading his childhood passion for photography for a decade with a DSLR camera that was gifted to him on his birthday by his son in 2010. He is a frequent traveler with his camera gears to length and breadth India. He loves to see the life in its true color. He is fond to follow stories and create amazing images of the same.

Raj has clicked thousands of pictures of magical landscapes, cityscapes, seascapes, incredible people, festivals, celebrations, flora and fauna of India. He believes in India’s rich cultural heritage, colorful festivals and soulful living.

He loves to search” Melody” in the silence, colors of dark and meanings of unspoken words through his images. He believes in extracting out few out of thousand words embedded in an image. Photography is divine treat to his soul. Its Medication and Meditation to body and mind.

His works have been exhibited in more than 30 countries. He has been awarded with more than 150 prestigious awards at National and International levels. He has got recognitions from Federation of Indian Photography (FIP), The International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP), Photographic Society of America (PSA), Global Photographic Union (GPU)
