Your Cultural Correspondent (Film) immediately followed 'If Beale Street could talk' with 'Green Book' an altogether much better and more engrossing film. And one which we cannot praise enough, not least for it showing us what people who had to have recourse to the Green Book had to endure.
Your Cultural Correspondent (Film) thinks that 'If Beale Street could talk' it would surely ask, 'What on Earth have I done to deserve this film?' swiftly followed by 'Couldn't my story have been told in a more engrossing and less boring way?' To which, of course, the answers would be 'We don't know' and 'Yes and yes'.

Two of the Queens who have featured prominently in the life of Your Cultural Correspondent (Film) are Queen Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots. We have read many books about them and seen their joint story acted out on screen by Glenda Jackson and Vanessa Redgrave and on stage by Harriet Walter and Janet McTeer. The latter two were appearing in a production of Mr Friedrich Schiller's 'Mary Stuart'. Had we been writing reviews for The Moon at that time, we would have noted how affecting the play was and in particular these words uttered to the Scottish Queen by Mortimer:

As The Moon's Editor inserted in one of our first reviews of the year, Your Cultural Correspondent (Film) is 'blissfully unsophisticated'. Thus it was that the occasional, perhaps even too often, diversions into 'sophistication' rather spoilt 'Vice' for Your Cultural Correspondent (Film).
