Skype, Norton and TomTom Invite Consumers to Update Software for Free
During ‘International Technology Upgrade Week’

Palo Alto, CA - JULY 23, 2012 - Skype today announced the launch of International Technology Upgrade Week (ITUW), a global initiative joined by Norton by Symantec and TomTom to encourage consumers to regularly download free software updates to their computers, smartphones and tablets and other portable devices, like GPS units. The prime focus of International Technology Upgrade Week is to directly address consumers’ concerns and educate them on the value of keeping their software up to date, especially when many updates are free.

The need for this initiative is readily apparent, as a recent survey of American, British and German consumers revealed that 40 percent of adults don’t always update software on their computers when initially prompted to do so. In each country, approximately one quarter of those surveyed said they don’t clearly understand what software updates do and an equal percentage of consumers don’t understand the benefits of updating regularly.

In looking at the impact of automatic update notifications, the survey found that while three quarters of adults received notifications on their computers telling them to update their software, more than half said they needed to see a prompt between two and five times before downloading and installing an update. Even for those consumers who recognized the benefits of upgrading, one quarter didn’t know how to check if their installed software even needs updating.

“Here at Skype, we are constantly getting feedback from our users and making improvements to Skype every day,” said Linda Summers, Director of Product Marketing at Skype. “Only by regularly upgrading, are consumers able to enjoy the benefits of improved voice and video calling quality, longer mobile battery life and bug fixes, in addition to new features that we regularly add across our product portfolio, like Photo Sharing on mobile, or Group Video Calling and Group Screen Sharing on a computer.”

Symantec, the maker of Norton security software, recently reported blocking more than 5.5 billion malicious attacks in 2011, an increase of 81 percent over the previous year. Having the protection of a powerful security suite in this environment is essential - regardless of device or platform. With a current Norton subscription, users are entitled to update to the latest product version available on the market. Updating your Norton product is safe, easy, secure, and ensures customers benefit from the latest features and performance improvements. Users can learn more by visiting the Norton Update Center.

Consumers who use TomTom’s in-car location and navigation products may experience out of date maps or get stuck in traffic by not regularly updating the software. All TomTom portable navigation devices are enabled to receive free daily map changes. These updates enable drivers to keep the TomTom map on their device up-to-date with immediate changes in their area, such as changed speed limits, new street names, blocked roads and new traffic directions. In addition, more structural, long-term changes such as the addition of roads or roundabouts are validated and updated within TomTom’s maps and made available on a quarterly basis.

Consumer Insights
Across all regions surveyed, more men than women upgrade software when prompted to and said that they have updated software within the last week.

When asked for their top reasons for either downloading or not downloading updates, consumers across geographies offered the following responses:

Top Reasons for Updating
1. Keeping computers safe from viruses/hackers
2. Ensures software is free of bugs and crashes less often
3. Having the latest and greatest software features
4. Upgrades are often free

Top Reasons for Not Updating
1. Worried about computer security, so I don’t download everything I’m prompted to
2. There is no real benefit to me
3. Upgrades take too long
4. Lack of understanding about what the update(s) will do

Here are some step-by-step tips for getting your free updates from Skype, Symantec and TomTom.

Skype
Automatic updates are the easiest way to keep your Skype up to date. They are turned on by default for users with the most recently updated versions of Skype for Windows and Skype for Mac. If you’d like to confirm that you have the latest version of Skype, visit www.skype.com/download. For more information about why users should regularly update their Skype software, visit www.skype.com/go/upgrade.

Norton by Symantec
Norton users with a valid product subscription are eligible to receive the latest product updates via the subscription service model. These updates are critical for ensuring consumers have the latest protection. For more information, visit the Norton Update center at http://updatecenter.norton.com.

TomTom
1. Connect your device to your computer
2. Download the TomTom Application
3. Register your device
4. Download available updates

About the Survey Methodology
This survey was conducted using an online interview administered to members of the YouGov Plc GB panel of 350,000+ individuals who have agreed to take part in surveys. An email was sent to individual panelists (which were randomly selected from those panelists in the base sample which were identified as representing the sample definition), inviting them to take part in the survey and providing them with a link to the survey. The responding sample is weighted to the profile of the sample definition to provide a representative reporting sample. The profile is normally derived from census data or, if not available from the census, from industry accepted data.

Advanced, All-in-One, Android-based System Lets Consumers Connect Instantly To Those Who Matter Most - Right From Their TV, In Amazing HD Video Quality

Luxembourg and Menlo Park, CA — January 5, 2012 - Skype and Tely Labs today announce a partnership in which Tely Labs will offer Skype’s globally popular communications software in their powerful, yet compact, video calling device - telyHD, allowing everyday consumers to experience free Skype video calling with big-screen impact and high-definition clarity. Now, the entire household can use their TV to instantly and easily connect face-to-face with family and friends worldwide through Skype - whether on a computer, tablet, smartphone or TV. telyHD - which doesn’t require a computer and is compatible with most HD TVs - is well-priced, sets up in minutes, uses industry-leading Skype and Android technologies, and allows for video calls to take place in a comfortable, naturally social setting - your living room.

“telyHD fundamentally redefines the video calling experience and, in a larger sense, how we connect and communicate with people across the globe. We acknowledge the potential of video calling and the power of Skype as we evolve it beyond the computer screen and onto an HD TV that closely resembles immersive, real-world interaction. What’s truly exciting is that we make this next-gen video interaction possible with telyHD, an extremely simple-to-use device designed and priced for everyday consumers,” said Sreekanth Ravi, CEO of Tely Labs.

“We are proud of our work with Tely Labs, because it demonstrates how pioneering companies can integrate the Skype platform into our users’ daily lives in compelling new ways providing our community with the widest possible range of video calling options. We are excited that, with telyHD, our users will have an entirely new way to enjoy HD big-screen interaction with their friends and family,” said Manrique Brenes, Skype’s senior director of platform business.

Skype in HD Moves into the Living Room
telyHD gives consumers the freedom to share moments big and small with friends and family around the world. Unlike traditional computer-based web cameras, telyHD is designed for the living room with a wide-angle camera that zooms, pans and tilts to capture an entire room and all the participants in stunning HD video.1 By opening up the living room to Skype, consumers can interact in a more natural, social way. Anyone on Skype can receive a telyHD video call, whether using Skype on a computer, tablet or smartphone, and can enjoy the improved telyHD video regardless of whether or not they have their own telyHD system.

When both parties have telyHD systems, they can take advantage of even more capabilities including video mail − a messaging system feature that allows users to record a video message such as a birthday greeting for friends or family that are not available to chat. Additionally, participants can share photos together while interacting on a telyHD video call. Users can even download a favorite photo right to a USB memory stick or SD card that plugs into the telyHD system as they video chat.*

Simple, Affordable, and Complete System
An all-in-one system, telyHD includes everything necessary to initiate a video call in minutes. The single-box solution features a wide-angle HD camera, four microphones with noise cancellation, built-in Wi-Fi or wired Internet connectivity, an easy to use remote control, and all necessary cables. telyHD does not require a computer or any additional hardware; users simply link it to their home network and plug it into their HD TV via HDMI. The telyHD unit sits discreetly on top of the TV or can be placed on a nearby shelf or tripod. It has a fully adjustable clamp so that it will fit perfectly on any size TV.

Extensible Android-Based Entertainment Platform for the Future
When a consumer purchases telyHD today, they benefit from the immediate Skype video calling capabilities and also buy into a system that is designed for the future. The telyHD system is built on the powerful, extensible Android OS and uses the high-performance Tegra 2 Dual-Core ARM A9 processor from NVIDIA. With this solid foundation, telyHD users will be able to use the system for an array of compelling home entertainment activities in the future − from social networking and gaming to video streaming and more. Tely Labs is already working with the Android developer community to identify new apps that extend the ways consumers can use and enjoy telyHD in the home.

Pricing and Availability
telyHD will be available beginning January 5, 2012 through online retailers Amazon, Tely.com and Skype.com. The telyHD system is priced at $249 with no monthly fees and no PC required*.

Access to a broadband Internet connection is required. Skype is not a replacement for traditional telephone service and cannot be used for emergency calling.

Skype, associated trademarks and logos and the “S” symbol are trademarks of Skype Limited.

1 HD quality is achieved with HDMI enabled TVs
* telyHD to telyHD only
* broadband/Wi-Fi connection is required

Skype survey defines changing attitudes to staying in touch and announces launch of Skype from your home phone

To celebrate the launch of Skype from your home phone Skype has commissioned research into changing communication habits. Half of Brits would have no problem working overseas as they know it is easy to stay in touch with loved ones here in the UK, new research has revealed. However, spare a thought for those left behind, as only 48% could recall their parents' home phone number off the top of their head and even fewer (12%) are able to recall their parents' mobile phone number.

The UK survey of 2,000 people, which was commissioned by Skype and conducted by Opinion Matters to coincide with the launch of Skype from your home phone - a new line of products that enable the use of Skype from your home phone, has revealed that advances in technology have removed one of the main worries of many thinking about moving abroad.

When asked whether the fact that it is now so much easier to keep in contact with friends and family back home would mean they would be more willing to accept a job offer and move abroad, 50% of respondents either strongly agreed or slightly agreed. This is more likely in younger people, with 60% of 16-24 year olds and 61% of 25-34 year olds open to this lifestyle choice. Respondents from the North East were the biggest homebodies, with only 9% expressing a strong desire to move overseas for work, whilst those in London were the keenest (20%).

The research has also revealed that our connections abroad have increased over the past ten years - meaning that we have had to find new ways to stay in touch. According to our UK survey, 69% of us now have one or more friends or relatives living abroad, an increase of over 21% since 2001 (57%). Fortunately, an overwhelming 98% of people felt that technological advances have meant that it's easier to keep in contact with friends and family members abroad much more than ever before.

Enrico Noseda, Head of Market Development for Europe, Middle East and Africa said of the findings, "Attitudes towards keeping in touch internationally are changing. At Skype, our mission is to make Skype available everywhere so users can enjoy their conversations whenever and wherever they are. With the launch of Skype from your home phone, we are continuing to make it even easier for consumers to enjoy conversations in the home, whether on Skype-enabled TVs, Skype for Windows or Mac, and now via a Skype-ready cordless phone or the FREETALK Phone Adapter."

When asked how people are staying in touch with loved ones abroad there was an overwhelming lean towards online communication (87%). This reflects the rapid growth of this form of communication; ten years ago it only accounted for 27% of people's first choice, being beaten by the phone. The biggest age group using the internet for international communication is 16-24 year olds at 89%, but the older generations are catching up, with 87% of 55+ going online to stay in touch with overseas friends or relatives.

Skype user and queen of clean Kim Woodburn said of the launch of Skype from your home phone, "I can remember a time when the only way you could stay in touch with friends and family who were abroad was via a letter because international calling was so expensive. Skype has been extremely helpful in enabling me to stay in touch with my uncle in Australia and other members of my family around the world. The launch of Skype on the home phone makes it even easier, as I can now make Skype calls from my home phone to stay in touch with my friends and family abroad."

The home phone has also changed significantly in the last ten years in terms of usage. Back in 2001 the phone was the first choice of communication for 65% of the UK and has fallen to 56% in 2011. The phone was the first choice of Scotland for international communication in 2001 with 73% of people using it which has fallen to 62%. Northern Ireland use the phone the most with figures for 2011 showing 67% of the population would still choose this as their main means of communication.

It would seem that there is still a feeling that the cost of international calls is stopping people from ringing abroad more often via mobiles and landlines, with 71% of respondents in our survey either strongly agreeing or slightly agreeing with this. One way that people have been staying in touch more cost effectively is through Skype. In fact, according to estimates published by TeleGeography in January 2011, the number of Skype-to-Skype calling minutes was equivalent to approximately 20% of the total of all global international PSTN and Skype-to-Skype calling minutes*.

To enjoy Skype from their home phone, users can either select a Skype-ready cordless phone or the FREETALK® Home Phone Adapter - a hassle-free, plug-and-play solution that lets phone users enjoy free Skype-to-Skype calls and low cost calls to landlines and mobiles worldwide directly via a broadband connection from their existing handset. These products enable both Skype and landline calling, from the same handset.

Skype is now combining the convenience of calling from your home phone with great value Skype calling rates with the introduction of Skype from your Home Phone. Users can either select a Skype-ready cordless phone from GE or the FREETALK Home Phone Adaptor to make free Skype-to-Skype calls and low cost calls to landlines and mobiles worldwide directly from your existing handset.

The FREETALK Connect•Me Home Phone Adapter, which can store up to 100 speed dials and 200 Skype contacts, only requires a PC for the initial set up. Once the adapter is set up, users don't have to turn on their computers to connect with friends and family through Skype. If the consumer wants to make a call using their traditional landline, the FREETALK Connect•Me Home Phone Adapter allows them to choose that option as well.

The GE Digital Cordless Expandable Telephone with Skype (GE 31591) is the latest in a line of popular Skype ready handsets which will give consumers the ability to connect with Skype contacts for free, make low-cost calls to mobiles and landlines and manage their Skype contacts without the need of a PC.

Both products will be available for sale through the online Skype Shop. The FREETALK® Connect•Me product will also be available on FREETALK's website.

*For the year ended 31 December 2010.

Negotiations of the definitive agreement under which Microsoft would acquire Skype, an Internet communications company, for $8.5 billion were led by investor group Silver Lake and the transaction was originally announced on May 10, 2011. Boards of directors of both Microsoft and Skype previously approved the acquisition.

Microsoft and Skype will remain focused on their shared goal of connecting all people across all devices and accelerating both companies' efforts to transform real-time communications for consumers and enterprise customers. The completion of the acquisition also marks the official introduction of Skype as a new business division within Microsoft.

"Skype is a phenomenal product and brand that is loved by hundreds of millions of people around the world," said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. "We look forward to working with the Skype team to create new ways for people to stay connected to family, friends, clients and colleagues -- anytime, anywhere."

Skype CEO Tony Bates will assume the title of president of the Skype Division of Microsoft immediately, reporting directly to Ballmer. The Skype division will continue to offer its current products to millions of users globally. Skype employees will continue to be located around the world in offices including Estonia, the Czech Republic, Russia, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Luxembourg, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, and the United States.

"By bringing together the best of Microsoft and the best of Skype, we are committed to empowering consumers and businesses around the globe to connect in new ways," Bates said. "Together, we will be able to accelerate Skype's goal to reach 1 billion users daily," Bates said.

Founded in 2003, Skype was acquired by eBay in September 2005, and then acquired by an investment group led by Silver Lake in November 2009. Skype has made impressive progress, developing new products and revenue streams, strategic acquisitions, acquiring the intellectual property powering its peer-to-peer network, and recruiting an outstanding senior management team.

Other members of the selling investor group led by Silver Lake include eBay International AG, CPP Investment Board, Joltid Ltd. in partnership with Europlay Capital Advisors; and Andreessen Horowitz.

FREETALK Connect•Me Home Phone Adapter for Skype Gives Consumers Simple Plug-and-Play Way to Make Free Skype-to-Skype Calls and Low-Cost Calls to Phone Numbers Using Existing Handsets

LUXEMBOURG, August 31, 2011 - Skype today announced that now it will be even easier for U.S. and Canada-based consumers to enjoy the convenience of low-cost Skype calling from the home phone with the introduction of the FREETALK® Connect•Me Home Phone Adapter for Skype. This hassle-free solution will allow consumers to use their existing handsets to make free Skype-to-Skype calls and affordable calls to landlines and mobile phones worldwide.

The FREETALK Connect•Me Home Phone Adapter is the latest product in the FREETALK line-up that is designed to make it easier for consumers to enjoy Skype conversations to anyone else using Skype, regardless of their device, including: computers (PC, Mac or Linux), iPhone, iPad, Android smartphones and even to a Skype-enabled HDTV. Consumers can also receive Skype to Skype calls from other Skype users on their landline phone using the Connect•Me Home Phone Adapter.

The FREETALK Connect•Me Home Phone Adapter, which can store up to 100 speed dials/Skype contacts, only requires a PC for the initial set up. Cord and cables needed to connect to home phones and to the Internet are included in box. To use it, all a consumer needs is a broadband Internet connection and a home phone. This means that once the adapter is set up, they don't have to turn on their computers to connect with friends and family through Skype. If the consumer wants to make a call using their traditional landline, the FREETALK Connect•Me Home Phone Adapter allows them to choose that option as well.

"Our mission is to make Skype available everywhere so consumers can enjoy conversations whenever and wherever they are," said Neil Stevens, Skype's vice president and general manager for product and marketing. "We are delighted to have partners that help us deliver on this mission through the introduction of new products such as the Connect•Me Home Phone Adapter. Now, using Skype at home is as simple as picking up a handset and dialing."

In a global first, one Australian school will form a unique partnership with a Ugandan refugee school

The collaborative Here & There program will enable the school children in both countries to learn about each other's lives, as part of their geography lessons

SYDNEY and LUXEMBOURG, 17 June 2011 - Australia for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency's charity in Australia, has partnered with Skype to offer a world-first educational opportunity to an Australian school.

The Here & There program will team an Australian school with the Australian-funded school at Nakivale refugee settlement in Uganda, with the children involved given the chance to work together on a creative project to learn more about each other's lives.

Here & There is aimed at raising awareness around issues facing refugees among Australian schoolchildren, their parents and the wider population. It is purpose-designed to dovetail with the Australian geography curriculum, ensuring participating children attain maximum educational benefit while undertaking this life-changing opportunity to share their thoughts and experiences with children who have very different lives.

Commenting on the partnership, Naomi Steer, National Director for Australia for UNHCR, said: "Many of the children in Nakivale have spent nearly their whole lives in refugee situations, so the opportunity to meet kids on the other side of the world is very exciting.

"Our donors have also really embraced opportunities for deeper connection with refugees. On previous visits to Nakivale, we have carried written messages of support from our Australian donors to share with the children and their families. They have been very enthusiastic about this exchange, asking for other ways they could interact. The partnership with Skype gives us the tools to make this a reality," Ms Steer said.

"After four years of Australian support for Nakivale refugee settlement, we are delighted to be able to foster direct links between the children of Nakivale and their Australian counterparts. Our Australian donors have funded many areas of Nakivale such as shelter, water, health and education facilities, including building the first ever secondary school.

"We want to celebrate and recognise this special connection by developing closer links between Australia and the refugee settlement," she said.

The project builds on Skype's existing partnership with UNHCR and commitment to breaking down barriers to communication: "We are delighted to collaborate with UNHCR to promote the Here & There programme," said Jacqueline Botterill, Skype's CSR Manager. "As part of Skype's dedication to connecting everyone on the planet, the use of real-time video will offer the selected Australian school and students from Nakivale refugee settlement an immediate way to interact with new cultures, languages and ideas, all without leaving the classroom."

For more details, and information on how to apply, please refer to the background information.

About Australia for UNHCR
Australia for UNHCR was established in 2000 as part of UNHCR's global fundraising network. Its mission is to provide life changing humanitarian support to refugees and other displaced and stateless people who come under the care and protection of the UN Refugee Agency.

About UNHCR and Skype
UNHCR partnered with Skype in 2010 to provide its overseas aid workers with a way to communicate with their friends and families. Skype and UNHCR are subsequently exploring the development of a communications solution that will benefit refugees more directly. Using the knowledge and experience from the deployment of Skype to UNHCR staff, the solution will aim to allow refugees to reach family and friends across borders and will also be used to facilitate protection operations, including repatriation, resettlement and family reunification. By the end of 2011, the aim is for Skype to be in at least 80 percent of UNHCR hardship locations and available to more than 3,000 staff members.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

How Australians are helping Nakivale
Nakivale, in south-west Uganda, is one of Africa's oldest and largest refugee settlements, currently home to more than 56,000 people fleeing conflicts in nearby countries such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Australia for UNHCR has been supporting the Nakivale refugee settlement in Uganda for more than four years, improving the health and living conditions of its long-term residents through support for water, education, maternal health, general healthcare and skills training.

How to apply for Here & There
Secondary schools across Australia have been invited to apply to participate in Here & There, explaining why they would like to share stories about their lives with the children of Nakivale. The school selected will then work with the school in Nakivale on a multimedia project designed to help students understand differences and similarities in childhood as experienced in their respective countries. This will provide a unique global education experience, with participating children interviewing one another on a supervised Skype video call in September this year.

To be eligible for the Here & There programme, the Australian school must apply online via www.herethere.org.au before close of business August 20th, 2011. Schools are encouraged to exercise creativity in their application through innovative use of multimedia, using either video or images.

Australians are encouraged to support and share their favourite submissions. The panel, comprised of education and UNHCR representation, will be selecting the school based on the following criteria:

Passion for the project

Creativity in their application

A belief that the project will be beneficial to the school

Connection to the curriculum content in a specific subject

The panel will comprise:

Sue Field, Vice President, Geography Teacher's Association, NSW

Jane Turner, Actress, Writer and A4U Special Representive

Rick Towle, Regional Representative, UNHCR

Rick Millen, PWC *

Combined companies will benefit consumers, businesses and increase market opportunity

REDMOND, WA, and LUXEMBOURG, 10 May 2011 - Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) and Skype Global S.à.r.l. today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Microsoft will acquire Skype, the leading Internet communications company, for $8.5 billion in cash from the investor group led by Silver Lake. The agreement has been approved by the boards of directors of both Microsoft and Skype.

The acquisition will increase the accessibility of real-time video and voice communications, bringing benefits to both consumers and enterprise users and generating significant new business and revenue opportunities. The combination will extend Skype's world-class brand and the reach of its networked platform, while enhancing Microsoft's existing portfolio of real-time communications products and services.

With 170 million connected users and over 207 billion minutes of voice and video conversations in 2010, Skype has been a pioneer in creating rich, meaningful connections among friends, families and business colleagues globally. Microsoft has a long-standing focus and investment in real-time communications across its various platforms, including Lync (which saw 30 percent revenue growth in Q3), Outlook, Messenger, Hotmail and Xbox LIVE.

Skype will support Microsoft devices like Xbox and Kinect, Windows Phone and a wide array of Windows devices, and Microsoft will connect Skype users with Lync, Outlook, Xbox Live and other communities. Microsoft will continue to invest in and support Skype clients on non-Microsoft platforms.

"Skype is a phenomenal service that is loved by millions of people around the world," said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. "Together we will create the future of real-time communications so people can easily stay connected to family, friends, clients and colleagues anywhere in the world."

Skype will become a new business division within Microsoft, and Skype CEO Tony Bates will assume the title of president of the Microsoft Skype Division, reporting directly to Ballmer.

"Microsoft and Skype share the vision of bringing software innovation and products to our customers," said Tony Bates. "Together, we will be able to accelerate Skype's plans to extend our global community and introduce new ways for everyone to communicate and collaborate," Bates said.

"Tony Bates has a great track record as a leader and will strengthen the Microsoft management team. I'm looking forward to Skype's talented global workforce bringing its insights, ideas and experience to Microsoft," Ballmer said.

Speaking on behalf of the investor group that sold Skype to Microsoft, Egon Durban, managing director of Silver Lake, said: "We are thrilled with Skype's transformation during the period of our ownership and grateful for the extraordinary commitment of its management team and employees. We are excited about Skype's long-term future with Microsoft, as it is poised to become one of the world's most dynamic and comprehensive communications platforms."

Founded in 2003, Skype was acquired by eBay in September 2005, and then acquired by an investment group led by Silver Lake in November 2009. Skype has made impressive progress over the past 18 months under Silver Lake's leadership, increasing monthly calling minutes by 150 percent, developing new revenue streams and strategic partnerships, acquiring the intellectual property powering its peer-to-peer network, and recruiting an outstanding senior management team.

Other members of the selling investor group led by Silver Lake include eBay International AG, CPP Investment Board, Joltid Limited in partnership with Europlay Capital Advisors; and Andreessen Horowitz.

The acquisition is subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions. The parties hope to obtain all required regulatory clearances during the course of this calendar year.

LUXEMBOURG, March 30th, 2011 - School teachers and students everywhere now have an easy way to find each other for collaborative projects and shared learning through a new online platform provided by Skype. Skype in the classroom is a free global community created in response to, and in consultation with, the growing number of teachers using Skype to help their students learn. Teachers can use the tool to collaborate with other teachers, and find partner classes and guest speakers. Skype in the classroom is designed to help like-minded teachers find each other and relevant projects according to search criteria such as the age groups they teach, location and subjects of interest; and teaching resources can be easily shared and found.

In the past, many teachers have found that the biggest challenge to using Skype in their classrooms has been finding similar classes to pair with. Skype in the classroom presents a solution by bringing like-minded teachers together online and making it easy for them to share skills and ideas.

Today more and more teachers all over the world use Skype to make learning more exciting, interactive and memorable. From language studies and geography lessons to virtual field trips and expert speakers joining classes from afar, Skype video offers an immediate way to help students discover new cultures, languages and ideas, all without leaving the classroom. In addition, teachers are being encouraged to do more to share their expertise and experiences systematically in ways that go beyond the mere exchange of information. It is also reported that teachers who exchange ideas and information and co-ordinate their practices with other teachers report more positive teacher-student relations at their own schools.*

The platform, which has been in beta since the end of December, already has a community of more than 3900 teachers, across 99 countries. Kara Cornejo, who teaches a 5th grade class in Missouri, USA, and is an avid Skype user, found five schools around the world to collaborate with on an international weather project within just one day of joining. "Skype in the classroom is an amazing resource to find teachers to collaborate with and to bring people into your classroom that you would never have been able to."

The Global Learning Exchange, a program designed to create borderless classrooms and allow students to learn about other cultures seamlessly has been using Skype video for four years. Regular exchanges between Jurong West primary school children in Singapore and Bill Williams Elementary school students in California, USA "has helped all 260 students from both schools build relationships with one another and facilitated learning that is not limited by geographical borders," said co-founder Manuel Rose Delema. "Skype makes learning fun and engaging as children look forward to meeting their global friends and asking questions."

In a similar way, Skype is also used to connect 9-10 year old students at Lakanal school in Lille, France with their peers in Prince Edouard Island, Canada. "Before arranging the first video call, our students exchanged letters and emails but we decided to bring the two classes together face-to-face over Skype video to enrich their relationship," said Christophe Fetat, the teacher at Lakanal school. "The result was amazing. Students were really engaged to discuss different topics. It is really a simple and effective way to exchange ideas, learn and bring other cultures into the class."

"Skype is committed to removing the barriers to communications and enabling conversations around the world with technology that is easy to use and affordable," said Tony Bates, Skype Chief Executive Officer. "Skype in the classroom has been developed for a specific community of people who have a shared interest and are passionate about using technology in inventive ways in their classroom. We've received positive feedback from teachers and are keen to continue developing the site to meet their needs and help school children around the world work together in wonderful ways never thought possible."

To join Skype in the classroom, teachers should:

Sign up at education.skype.com using their Skype account details

Create a profile which includes their interests, location and the age groups they teach

Explore the directory to find projects, teachers and resources that match their skills, needs or interests

Skype in the classroom is a members-only community. Once teachers find someone they want to connect with they can add that person as a Skype contact or send them a message through the site.

To find projects, teachers, resources, and inspiration visit education.skype.com

<sm>* According to the last Background Report for the International Summit on the Teaching Profession - OCDE 2011</sm>

LUXEMBOURG, 23 March 2011 — Today Qik, mobile video software recently acquired by Skype, launched a new iPhone app called Qik Video Connect. The new app enables individuals to stay connected with friends and family through video calling, video messaging, and video sharing.
With Qik Video Connect, users can instantly share what is happening around them with friends and family through a live video call. If they aren’t able to connect live, then users can still share all the rich details of the moment by sending a video mail. They can even post a live video link to Facebook and Twitter so friends can watch the moment as it is being recorded. The new social video feed makes it easy to follow what friends are doing by receiving alerts when new videos are shared and watching those videos right from the phone.

Whether it’s capturing a greeting for your loved ones, recording a video of your child as they score the winning goal, or having a video chat while you’re away from your friends and family – Qik makes it simple to record, share and stay connected through video.

There are two versions of the application available to consumers – Qik Video Connect and Qik Video Connect Plus. The latter is available for $2.99 and offers additional features such as:

Real-time effects: Customize and enhance video chat and live video streaming with seven effects and filters.

Video editing: Use simple video editing tools directly from your device to share the best moments.

Both the Qik Video Connect and Connect Plus apps enable live video chat over 3G* or WiFi between iPhones, iPod Touches with built-in cameras. Qik is integrated with your phone’s contact list so you can easily see when your friends and family are available for a live video chat. In addition, you can also send a private video mail through email or SMS if your friends and family aren’t able to talk live, no matter what device or phone network they are on.

Both apps are available for download today through the Apple App store for iPhone and 4th generation iPod Touch models with iOS 4 or later. For additional information, visit qik.com.
