Scottish Government praises college merger

The merger that created City of Glasgow College has been hailed a success by the Scottish Government.

According to a Scottish Funding Council report, the merger of Glasgow Central, Metropolitan and Nautical colleges on September 1, 2010 has benefited students, staff and employers.

City of Glasgow College in partnership with Creative Clyde hosted the inaugural Creative Skills Summit on Tuesday 26th March at the Glasgow Science Centre.

The event was organised to give education and industry representatives from the Creative Industries a forum to discuss how collaboration could help drive skills development and help define how Glasgow’s Higher and Further Education Sectors can help media, technology and creatively minded businesses flourish in the city.

Green light for City of Glasgow College Campuses

The City of Glasgow Council has given the green light for the City of Glasgow College to move to the next stage of their ambitious, £228million development for two new world leading College campuses – on Cathedral Street in the city centre and at Thistle Street on the banks of the River Clyde.

By granting full planning consent, the Council have signalled that it’s all systems go for Glasgow to have 21st century, state of the art campuses which have been carefully designed to have student learning at their very core.

Bookings for Evening and Saturday Courses

TV duo shine at Gaelic Film Awards

Television students Dariusz Sipowski and David Allan have won a top prize at the the fifth National Gaelic Film Awards.

The duo scooped the People’s Choice Award at the the FilmG competition for their short film about children’s dreams.

Scottish director Michael Hines, who has worked on the likes of Chewin’ the Fat and Still Game, said: “The people are the real judges of our work.”

Darriusz said: “I’d like to thank lecturer David Burns for his help.”

City of Glasgow College Open Day 2013

Visitors got a taste of the college’s huge range of courses during last month’s Open Day.

Hundreds of potential and prospective students were treated to a host of demonstrations and activities in subjects across our 10 academic schools.

Choosing the right course can be a complex business so it was just as well that our staff and students were on hand to with plenty of information for visitors.

City chefs win UK ‘cook-off’ final

A team of aspiring chefs at the college have been named the Best in Britain after winning the final of the Brakes Student Chef Team Challenge.

Vanessa Daley (27, from Bridgeton), Neil Rowan (20, from Glasgow) and Michael Shedden (26, from Cumnock) saw off the challenge of six English colleges to clinch victory at Glasgow’s SECC yesterday (March 6).

The three Professional Cookery students, mentored by lecturer chef Gary MacLean, will now receive a five-day work experience week hosted by top chef Christopher Basten.

World-famous chef Michel Roux Jr mentors food & hospitality students

Top chef Michel Roux Jr has praised students and staff after dishing out Michelin-starred advice at a charity lunch in the college.

The 52-year-old – who runs the world-famous Le Gavroche restaurant and has starred on TV shows such as Hell’s Kitchen and Masterchef – gave advice to budding chefs at the event in aid of the Hospitality Industry Trust Scotland.

Our winning team took home gold in the NUS-sponsored category at this year's Scotland’s Colleges Marketing Awards.

SRUC Oatridge scooped silver and Cumbernauld College took bronze at the event in the Trades Hall of Glasgow on Thursday February 28.

Frazer sets gas apprentice awards alight

An apprentice has been hailed for his diligence and endeavour at the Domestic Gas Apprentice awards. Frazer Inglis, who works for City Technical Services and trains at the college, scooped the Ralph Wardle Cup in memory of a former head of the college’s Gas division. Frazer, from Newton Mearns, is in the third year of his apprenticeship at the college and admitted it was an honour to win the top prize. And he thanked staff at the college for their help.

College hosts national beauty competition

Staff in the School of Hair and Beauty are hoping to stage the UK regional heats of Worldskills after successfully hosting a competition featuring 19 Scottish colleges.

Lecturer Denyse Edmiston, who is also a Worldskills mentor, organised the competition as a way to showcase the facilities at City of Glasgow College ahead
of a visit by Worldskills organisers.

City of Glasgow College's Winter Graduations took place on Monday 26th November at the Royal Concert Hall under the theme of 'Moment to Shine' ..... and our graduates certainly shone at both ceremonies!

In some cases, the graduation glow was very much a family affair with the day seeing a mother and son graduate as well as twin brothers and twin sisters!

World Skills - The Skills Show

NEC Birmingham 15th -17th November

Great news for City of Glasgow College after 6 of our students were invited to compete at the Worldskills UK finals held over 3 days last week.

Around 500 competitors competed under one roof at the NEC in over 50 skills categories providing a platform for the best of the nations young talent to perform. Two of our students came home with a medal after impressing in their respective specialisms:

Inspectors Praise College

The college has been given a glowing report by Government inspectors.

Following an Education Scotland visit in May, City of Glasgow College was given four Confidence Statements covering areas such as high-quality learning and teaching, effective leadership, student engagement and quality services for students and stakeholders. The college was also recognised for three examples of ‘sector-leading/excellent practice’, while three areas for improvement were found.

Paralympic medal hopeful presents torch to City of Glasgow College

One of Britain’s best medal hopes at this year’s Paralympic Games has donated an Olympic torch to City of Glasgow College.

Michael Kerr, from Uddingston, is set to play wheelchair rugby for Great Britain when the games kick off in London later this year.

Before setting off for the capital, the 29 year old former City of Glasgow College student paid a visit to the college where he donated the Olympic torch he carried during the recent Scottish leg of the UK-wide relay.

A meticulously detailed Diamond Jubilee cake created by staff and students at
City of Glasgow College was delivered to Buckingham Palace as the country prepared to celebrate Her Royal Highness’s anniversary on the throne.

The traditional two-tiered cake topped with a crown was planned by Willie McCurrach, Head of School for Food, Hospitality and Tourism at City of Glasgow
College, and was designed and produced by Lecturers in Bakery and Cake Decorating, Selina McCrae and Salome Nyrako, alongside City of Glasgow
College bakery students.

Worldskills Day Germany 2013

Worldskills is the biggest framework of skills competition in the World!

Worldskills is held every 2 years and brings together young people from around 50 nations across the globe to compete to become the best of the best in their chosen skill. There are over 40 skills categories in the competition – ranging from beauty therapy and landscape gardening to stonemasonry.

Top Scots chef Andrew Fairlie has dished out Michelin-starred advice to students at the college.
Andrew was joined by his head chef Stephen McLaughlin as he led a team of budding cooks and front of house staff to serve up a special lunch in our training restaurant Scholars’.
HND Professional Cookery student Janet MaGregor revealed she had no idea she'd be cooking with Andrew until the last minute but agreed it was the highlight of her time at City.

Royal Duo See Prince’s Trust in Action

to see his charity’s work in action. Accompanied by Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Rothesay, the Royal couple visited City of Glasgow College to spend time with young people during their training before meeting with leading figures from Glasgow’s hospitality scene.

Celebrating Success

Successful completion of the Microsoft Office Specialist certification by our
students in National Certificate course level 6- Technical Support and Software Development.

The students and staff worked very hard to achieve the certification and in recognition of that, Prodigy have presented our College with the prestige’s award for the first centre of excellence in Scotland for Microsoft Office Specialist training.

Congratulations to our students and staff on their acheivement.
