Lessons from the JISC community engagement and virtual research environment projects

What do researchers want from ICT? The JISC-funded Community Engagement projects set out to answer this question. Aimed paticularly at research computing services, IT directors and others planning research computing provision, this event will present some of their findings and stimulate debate on what needs to happen next.

Examples will be presented where innovative ICT techniques have been successfully incorporated into research processes. Barriers to success will be highlighted followed by solutions developed under the ENGAGE and JISC Virtual Research Environment projects. The debate will then be opened up to arrive at the next steps in ensuring that researchers have access to the ICT provision they need.

This event follows the same format as the event in London on 18 June 2009.

Audience

Proposals may be submitted by Higher Education (HE) Institutions funded by HEFCE or HEFCW. HE and Further Education (FE) institutions in Northern Ireland and Scotland and FE institutions in England and Wales are not eligible to bid but may be involved as partners in proposals led by HE institutions funded by HEFCE or HEFCW.

Proposals may be from single institutions or consortia. Partnership arrangements may be developed outside the sector (for example with research council sites, publishers, commercial suppliers), but the lead partner must meet the criteria outlined above. Funds can only be allocated through the lead partner.

In the context of the completion of Phase 2 of the JISC Digitisation Programme the JISC Digital Content Conference aims to discuss and decide the next steps that need to be taken to ensure the sustained integration of digitised content into research and education and is one of the most important events of 2009. It will consider the issues facing the UK's universities as they deal with creating, delivering, sustaining and using a whole range of digital content as well as looking into future opportunities and challenges. The following thematic strands will run throughout the conference: Managing Content; Content Development Strategies; Content In Education; User Engagement; Looking Into The Future.

Venue

The conference is taking place at the Cotswold Water Park Four Pillars Hotel providing a peaceful and tranquil backdrop for this important event. The venue is located in South Cerney, Gloucestershire, 3 miles from Cirencester and 20 minutes from junction 15 of the M4 or junction 11a of the M5.

There will be a free dedicated conference shuttle service between 09.30am and 11.30am on Tuesday 30 June from Kemble Train Station (6 miles) to the hotel. A shuttle service will also be provided for delegates to Kemble Station at the end of the conference at approximately 15.40.

NB: There is no waiting taxi rank at Kemble Station, as it is a relatively small train station. Delegates who are unable to take advantage of the free shuttle provided by the conference organisers may wish to book a taxi in advance to meet them at the station. There is no charge to attend the conference and accommodation on Tuesday 30 June, refreshments, lunch and dinner are all included. If you require accommodation for the 29 June or the 1 July we can arrange this for you but the cost will have to be met by you, please contact the event organisers to arrange this. All cancellations must be received in writing at least 1 week before the event. JISC reserves the right to charge a cancellation fee to delegates who do not show on the day of the conference and have not provided adequate notification in writing. This includes any delegates that do not notify us that they do not require accommodation or dinner but do attend the conference.

Managing data and teams: advanced tools for new research

Advances in networks and new ways to access services and data are having a profound effect on the research that can be done and the way researchers work across all disciplines.

This JISC-sponsored roadshow for researchers and those providing IT support, will introduce some of the infrastructure available at the international, national, regional and local level to help researchers collaborate in multidisciplinary teams and manage ever increasing volumes of research data. We will also hear from researchers at York who have successfully applied some of these tools, techniques and services to enable research that would otherwise have been impractical, if not impossible.

Speakers include Dr David Fergusson, Deputy Director, Training, Outreach and Education, the National e-Science Centre and Professor Jim Austin, York University, who will introduce the work at York. Demonstrations and posters over lunch will showcase local research and services.

Supporting Progression and Pedagogy: the role of technology in enhancing student retention

The Higher Education Academy and JISC are delighted to be able to offer a workshop to highlight the use of technology to support students at key times in their HE experience to enhance both retention and progression.

The event will draw on the work of both Academy and JISC funded projects focusing on the use of data tracking systems and processes as well as pedagogical and motivational interventions during students’ transition and induction into HE and the critical first year. Short presentations with linked discussions will engage participants with issues relevant to their own contexts.

National Teaching Fellow, Kate Kirk will provide the context for the event drawing on the Shock Absorber project, a collaborative student-centred project between Manchester Metropolitan University the University of Liverpool and Stockport College. The project aims to support students from pre-entry through induction into the first year by increasing students’ “confidence, knowledge and scholarship skills to alleviate the 'shock' or anxiety often associated with early experiences in Higher Education (HE) and the impact of the first assessment.” The development of the Shock Absorber learning and teaching ‘toolkit’ is being informed by institutional national and international research into common causes of student drop out in the early stages of undergraduate programmes and will “include mechanisms to embed strategies for student retention and success into formal quality enhancement procedures”.

Aaron Porter, Vice President (Higher Education) National Union of Students will chair a student panel convened to consider the role of technology in enhancing student retention. Delegates will be invited to put questions to the panel with the outcomes from this session feeding into the day’s discussions.

Workshop aims:
• to consider how technology can be used within different stages of the student lifecycle to enhance retention;
• to provide an insight into the methods and technologies being used across the sector and different discipline communities to enhance student retention;
• to identify the challenges and affordances presented by different technologies;
• to increase understanding of the support needs of institutions and their staff to enable the effective use of technology to enhance student retention.

Who should attend?
The workshop will be of interest to all teaching and non-teaching staff concerned with enhancing the student learning experience, including admissions tutors, educational and staff developers, learning technologists and staff involved in widening participation, registry and admissions, information library services and student support.

Launch of 'The Edgeless University': a new Demos report

Demos will be releasing a new report exploring the impact of technological and social change on universities.

The Edgeless University argues that technology in higher education is not just about virtual learning environments, but is increasingly central to the way institutions provide learning and facilitateresearch. Technology is making research and learning possible in new places, often outside of institutions. Far from undermining them, this is creating exciting opportunities for universities to demonstrate and capitalise on their value so will take strategic leadership from inside institutions, new connections with a growing world of informal learning, and a commitment to openness and collaboration. This is the radical role of The Edgeless University.

David Lammy MP, Minister for Higher Education and Intellectual Property; Anne Mroz of the Times Higher Education; Ed Smith of HEFCE; Malcolm Read of JISC; and Demos' Peter Bradwell will debate the findings of The Edgeless University in a discussion chaired by Demos’ Director Richard Reeves.

The event will take place from 10.00-11.30am on Tuesday 23 June, at Demos,136 Tooley St, London SE1 2TU. Please arrive at least 15 minutes early to allow for a prompt start. Light refreshments will be served from 9.30am.

Sustainable ICT Procurement - Current Best Practice and Future Opportunities in Universities and Colleges

Purchasing ICT equipment and technologies which are very energy efficient, and which have a relative small environmental footprint, is one of the most important sustainability actions for FHE institutions. The recent JISC-financed SusteIT report identified a number of valuable initiatives in the field, but also concluded that more needed to be done to supplement these.

This event will provide key stakeholders from within and outside the sector, and from IT, procurement and other functions, with an opportunity to:

Share experience on current activities and best practice
Update on relevant new developments, such as forthcoming OGC guidance, Energy Star 5 and the proposed UK/EU Electronic Products Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) scheme
Explore opportunities for future initiatives in the field (whilst ensuring that they complement rather than duplicate existing ones)

There are no preconceptions about how such initiatives might be organised and financed, but they are likely to be of interest to the forthcoming JISC Green IT programme, which is currently being planned.

Jointly organised by the JISC-funded SusteIT project and the Association of University Procurement Officers (AUPO)

Current plans for the event include short presentations by several sector procurement bodies on current and planned actions; by Simon Redding, Environment Agency specialist in sustainable ICT and responsible for liaison between the Government’s Green ICT Delivery Unit and the US EPEAT programme; and by SusteIT on Energy Star 5.0 and other EU initiatives.

There is no charge but places are limited.
