Plans Submitted for New Scarborough Water Park

Scarborough Council have this week received detailed plans for the next stage of the multi-million pound ‘The Sands’ development in Scarborough from developers Benchmark Leisure.

The latest plan for The Sands project sees a new all-year-round water park – complete with giant ‘tornado slide’, family restaurant and holiday homes being built on the site of the former Atlantis waterpark, Mr Marvels and Kinderland children’s park.

This latest phase of The Sands development is expected to create over 100 jobs in Scarborough as well as providing a much needed top quality attraction for both visitors and locals. Figures printed in Scarborough’s Evening News suggest that around 60 jobs will be created at the water park, 35 jobs at the holiday accommodation and 10 jobs at the new Scarborough restaurant.

The submitted plans state that the long promised water park is integral to the redevelopment of The Sands project in order to meet the aspirations for both tourism and the economy in Scarborough.

The new water park will replace the old Atlantis water park, which was demolished several years ago, and will ensure that a major local attraction returns to the North Bay area, helping to regain the holiday resort characteristics which have been sadly lacking for many years.

The new water park is expected to be the first element of the development to be brought forward, with construction hopefully beginning in late 2013. It is then expected that the rest of the development will follow on over a staggered timescale throughout the next few years.

As well as a tornado water slide the water park is also to include an indoor wave pool, a children’s pool, an outdoor family pool, a lazy river and a spa.

The Mr Marvels site is will see the creation of The Bayview Holiday village, with the former Kinderland kid’s park becoming be the site of 29 Scarborough holiday lodges. Car parking for up to 492 will also be made available on a grass overspill parking area off Burniston Road.

Scarborough Accommodation Voted Best in Yorkshire

Congratulations to the Crown Spa Hotel Scarborough and the Sands Holiday Apartments who both won top honours at this week’s White Rose Awards, organised by Welcome to Yorkshire.

The industry awards, which the highlight of the Yorkshire’s tourism industry calendar, celebrated the best of the counties tourist industry, with accommodation owners, local attractions and Event organisers all vying for top spot.

The Crown Spa Hotel Scarborough, was awarded first place for the Sustainable Tourism Award, as well as being nominated in the Large Hotel of the Year category. The Sands self catering apartments in North Bay came out top of the pile in the Self Catering, Cruisers and Serviced Apartments category.

Both these Scarborough accommodation owners will now go forward for the finals of the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence to be held next year.

With many Britons choosing to holiday at home this year, Yorkshire recorded a 16% increase in holiday visitors in the first half of the year. Spending by overseas visitors was also up over the summer months from £33m to £59m in just two years.

Britons Choose to Holiday at Home in 2011

Staycations taken by Britons where up by 3% in the first six months of the year according to VisitEngland, the national tourist board for England.

It wasn’t just UK holidays that were up either, tourism chiefs also confirmed that holidaymaker spending was also up a whopping 10% on the same period last year.

The increased number of UK breaks is believed to have been helped by the extra bank holiday introduced this year for the royal wedding as well as good weather in the early part of summer.

It wasn’t all good news though with VisitEngland warning that the poorer weather in late summer and a lack of consumer confidence was expected to lead to “many businesses not performing as well as they had hoped over the key school holiday period”.

Whilst the report may be erring on the side of caution, following a disappointing Summer, Scarborough accommodation owners did get a welcome boast at the end of September with an week of glorious sunshine. The unexpected sunny spell saw day-trippers, holidaymakers and locals heading to the beach, paddling in the sea and lighting up their barbecues right up to the 1 October.

The interesting figures, released at travel organisation ABTA’s annual convention in Palma, Majorca, are sure to make interesting reading for Scarborough accommodation owners with the Summer season just coming to an end in the popular seaside resort.

VisitEngland chief executive James Berresford was reported as saying: “We know that the trend to holiday at home is still popular but we know we must work extra hard to sustain this and ensure that Britons continue to be inspired to choose England as their primary holiday destination next year as well.”

At the convention in Majorca, UK holiday company Butlins confirmed it would be investing a further £34 million in its three seaside resorts this year and self-catering holiday company Hoseasons said it would be opening six new luxury accommodation lodges next year.
