Sarah Caldwell has been selected as the High School Youth Volunteer in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. Sarah will receive a $1000 scholarship and an all-expense paid trip to Washington DC this spring for a series of national recognition events. Congratulations to Sarah!

FHS Ocean Bowl Team

The FHS Ocean Bowl Team coached by science teacher Kim Blenk placed first in regional competition at the Nor'Easter Bowl at UNH. They are now invited to complete at the National Ocean Bowl competition in Seattle, Washington. Congratulations to the team!

Habitat for Humanity

Ten FHS students spent January 19 - January 26, 2014 volunteering on a construction site with Habitat for Humanity in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, a community that was devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

This was the 6th year that Falmouth students have been involved in the rebuilding and restoration of Hancock County, MS.

Habitat for Humanity Bay/Waveland has built 200 homes since Katrina. Elena Cerjanec, Sarah Caldwell, Ethan Cantlin, Kiersten Dhyrberg, Matt Simmons, Louisa MacEwan, Scott Lambert, Madi Winkeler, Caroline Denoia, and Spencer Brown were the first volunteers that Habitat Bay/Waveland has entrusted to build a foundation for one of their houses. The students also were involved in fundraising efforts, prior to their trip, that resulted in them covering the cost of the foundation as well.

New England Reading Association Award Recipient

Jennifer Merrifield, fourth grade teacher at Falmouth Elementary School, was honored this fall by the New England Reading Association at their annual conference for her distinguished work in literacy with her students over many years. One recipient per state received this award; Jen was the only classroom teacher to be so honored.

Elementary Learning Garden

The Elementary Learning Garden is flourishing with our return to school. Students in all grade levels are harvesting vegetables from the raised beds for the Maine Harvest Lunch next week. Teachers are integrating the butterfly garden and sensory bed in their curriculum. We hope many families will attend our Garden Open House on Sat., Sep. 28 from 10 am to 12 noon. This is part of a statewide event celebrating school gardens, sponsored by the Maine School Garden Network. Come celebrate our new learning garden at FES.

Maine Publishers and Writers Alliance Awards

Falmouth students Harrison Pearl (class of 2016) and Emma Sapat (class of 2013) each won the Maine Publishers and Writers Alliance youth award this year, Harrison for fiction and Emma for poetry. Emma was also the winner of the Merriconeag poetry award this year.

Coastal Clean Up Day

FHS science teacher and advisor Gary Glick and the Environmental Club recently participated in coastal clean up day. They removed over 400 pounds of trash from the Falmouth coastline. The community is most appreciative of their efforts!

Middle School Math Meet

8th grader Jack Hepburn and 7th grader Alison Noyes placed 4th and 3rd respectively in the individual competition at the Middle School Math Meet held at the Portland Expo.

Doodle 4 Google Finalist

FMS 8th grader Joey Han is a Doodle 4 Google Finalist for the U.S. 2013 contest in which there were over 100,000 entries. He is one of 50 finalists - 1 from each state (K-12). This year, students were asked to exercise their creative imaginations around the theme, “My Best Day Ever…” Look closely to see the word G o o g l e in Joey's design!

Falmouth students recognized for outstanding achievement in mathematics!

The American Mathematics Competition (AMC-8) is an annual mathematics contest sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America. The contest is given to over 150,000 contestants from more than 2,400 schools. The students have 40 minutes to complete 25 challenging math problems. Falmouth has a long tradition of participating in this contest.

The distinguished honor roll recognizes students who score in (approximately) the top 1% of students taking the contest (this year 22 points). The honor roll recognizes students who score in (approximately) the top 5% (this year, 18 points). The state winner is from Cumberland and scored 23 points.

These students have received a certificate from the Mathematical Association of America. Additionally, as the school winners, Maddy and Alison will have their names engraved on the AMC plaque in the main lobby of the middle school and have each received a “school winner” lapel pin.

Debate Team 2013 State Champs

Competing with over 300 high school students from 19 schools across Maine, the Falmouth High School Speech & Debate Team captured its third straight Maine Forensic League/Maine Principals Association title on Saturday, January 26 at Brunswick High School. Fourteen Falmouth students received individual awards that contributed to the team’s championship performance. In addition, Falmouth was voted the Sportsmanship Award for the third straight year.
